ALUMNI ASSOCIATION DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD DEBRA “DEBBIE” BRAY MITCHELL ʼ79 The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes a graduate who has made a distinctive and unique contribution to his or her profession and to society.

Debbie and Bill, who have long supported athletic programs, also provided leadership support to the turf field project to help ensure that Colby-Sawyer student-athletes would have the best possible experience at college.

Debra “Debbie” Bray Mitchell was a member of the Key Association as a student and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration. She has always appreciated her Colby-Sawyer education and the professors who made a difference in her life, and she is dedicated to supporting the places that are important to her and to her family. She shares her alma mater with her mother, Susan Wiesner Bray ’53, and her aunt, Nancy Wiesner Conkling ’58.

A dedicated and energetic volunteer for school and civic endeavors, Debbie is passionate about the work that the Vermont-based nonprofit Human Capital Foundation does through its Selamta Family Project, which creates an alternative care giving model to provide stable homes for orphaned children and marginalized women. Her frequent trips to Ethiopia have advanced the Project’s mission, and her extraordinary fundraising efforts have improved the project’s financial vitality. In 2009, she partnered with an optometrist friend to provide free eye screenings and exams for all the children in a school.

A resident of Heber City, UT, Debbie has been the correspondent for her class for the past seven years and is a loyal supporter of her college and the Colby-Sawyer Fund. She gave a named chair in the Ivey Science Center in 2005, and in 2008, she joined the President’s Alumni Advisory Council. Debbie and her husband, Bill, have been gracious hosts of many alumni receptions at their home in Hanover, supported the Windy Hill School project, and joined the Heritage Society by deciding to include the college in their estate plan.

For her far-reaching impact that changes how students on multiple continents see and experience their world, Colby-Sawyer is proud to call Debbie Mitchell an alumna, and to recognize her with the Distinguished Alumni Award.

SUSAN COLGATE CLEVELAND MEDAL FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE SONJA CARLSON DAVIDOW ʼ56 and WILLIAM H. “BILL” DAVIDOW The Susan Colgate Cleveland Medal for Distinguished Service is the college’s highest honor. It is presented to individuals who exemplify Susan Colgate Cleveland’s attributes, ensuring that her work, dedication and influence will be remembered by future generations.

of the Radiation Therapy Department at Stanford. The couple raised two daughters, and Sonja was very involved with their school activities and equestrian competitions. An avid reader, she served as president of the Friends of the Atherton Library for five years as well as on the Town of Woodsideʼs History Committee for 13 years. A highlight of her philanthropic work was the award-winning renovation of the Folger Stable in Woodside. Her latest endeavor is sharing her leadership, experience and wisdom with the Arts and Culture Committee, whose mission is to coordinate local events for all generations of Woodside residents.

Sonja Carlson Davidow ʼ56 and William H. “Bill” Davidow live in Woodside, Calif., but even from across the country, the mark they have made on Colby-Sawyer is indelible. Passionate about the arts and dedicated to philanthropy, the couple has made a gift to Colby-Sawyer that will support the collegeʼs highest academic priority of building a new fine and performing arts center and will fund the Sonja C. Davidow ʼ56 Endowed Chairs in the Fine and Performing Arts. The Davidows are members of the collegeʼs Heritage Society, which recognizes those who provide for Colby-Sawyerʼs future through a bequest or deferred gift, and Colby-Sawyerʼs Legends Society, which recognizes extraordinary philanthropy exceeding $1 million.

Bill worked in a variety of managerial positions before serving as senior vice president of marketing and sales at Intel. He is the author of Overconnected: The Promise and Threat of the Internet, Marketing High Technology and co-author of Total Customer Service with Bro Uttal and The Virtual Corporation with Michael Malone. He serves on the boards of Cal Tech, the California Nature Conservancy and the University of California San Francisco. Currently, he is an adviser to Mohr Davidow Ventures, a venture capital firm.

The Davidows met in California after Sonja earned her medical secretary degree at Colby Junior College and Bill attended Dartmouth College, where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He later earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the California Institute of Technology and a doctorate in electrical engineering from Stanford University.

For their dedication to ensuring that students have the opportunity to study and practice art in a beautiful space, and for supporting a project that will impact every member of the Colby-Sawyer community, as well as hundreds of community members who look to the college for cultural enrichment, Colby-Sawyer is honored to recognize Sonja and Bill with its highest award.

Sonja is a Colby-Sawyer trustee emerita and has hosted every college president since she graduated. She worked for Harvard Medical School in the Childrenʼs Hospital in Boston before moving to California, where she was the assistant to the head

INVESTITURE OF THE SONJA C. DAVIDOW ’56 ENDOWED CHAIRS IN THE FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS Sonja Carlson Davidow ’56 and William “Bill” Davidow of Woodside, Calif., have made a commitment to establish the Sonja C. Davidow ’56 Endowed Chairs in the Fine and Performing Arts. They intend this endowed fund to be used to support the chairs and its holders in perpetuity. The holder of the chairs shall be outstanding teachers with records of distinction in the arts who also fulfill the other criteria for endowed chairs at Colby-Sawyer College.

BERT YARBOROUGH

JON KEENAN

professor of fine and performing arts

professor of fine and performing arts

Professor of Fine and Performing Arts Bert Yarborough joined the Colby-Sawyer faculty in 1997. He is the director of our Marian Graves Mugar Gallery, and his own work has been sought after for many public collections, including for the Boston Public Library. Professor Yarborough’s art has been included in exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad, and we are fortunate that this skilled and multitalented artist, whose media include photography, painting, drawing, printmaking and design, has chosen to devote nearly two decades to teaching and inspiring our students.

Professor of Fine and Performing Arts Jon Keenan joined the faculty in 1990 and has dedicated his career to Colby-Sawyer and its students. He is a potter whose work is inspired by the traditions of Japanese ceramics, and he believes whole-heartedly that art brings people together. A Fulbright Scholar, Professor Keenan was named the Joyce J. Kolligian Distinguished Professor of Fine and Performing Arts in 2009. He has been recognized with awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, New England Foundation for the Arts, and the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, and he has exhibited his work in the U.S. and abroad.

His work is alive with human and avian figures, and it is infused with seaside environments, especially Provincetown, Mass. Water, sun, birds and other familiar elements of the landscape take on new life and meaning in Professor Yarborough’s hands.

When there is an opportunity to spread the word about the college, its art program and its wonderful students, Professor Keenan can be counted on to volunteer, whether the task is to speak with prospective donors in support of the new arts center or to travel to Nepal with students, as he did this past January, to share techniques for making ceramic water filters.

As he reshapes nature to inhabit interior walls, so, too, has he reshaped the lives of hundreds of students with his artistic expertise and guidance.

♦ ♦ ♦ For their outstanding teaching inside and outside of the classroom and for their artistic legacy, Colby-Sawyer is honored to invest Professor Bert Yarborough and Professor Jon Keenan as the first holders of the Sonja C. Davidow ’56 Endowed Chairs in the Fine and Performing Arts.

ACADEMIC REGALIA The Gown worn by a bachelor is distinguished by long, pointed sleeves. The gown worn by a master has oblong sleeves. The gown of a doctor has rounded sleeves, velvet panels around the neck and down the front, and three velvet bars on the sleeves. Hoods are lined in silk in the official colors of the institution granting the degree. For Colby-Sawyer College those colors are royal blue and white. The color of the hood trim indicates the degree earned. The hoods are trimmed in white for bachelor of arts, brown for bachelor of fine arts and gold for bachelor of science. Honor Cords of blue and green are worn by graduates who are members of the college’s chapter of the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society. Honor cords of blue and white are worn by graduates who have earned the college’s Wesson Honors Program Scholars Certificate. Honor cords of platinum and blue are worn by graduates who are members of the college’s chapter of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology. Honor cords of purple and white are worn by graduates who are members of the Colby-Sawyer College Honor Society for Nursing. Honor cords of green and gold are worn by graduates who are members of the college’s chapter of Sigma Beta Delta International Honor Society in Business, Management and Administration. Honor cords of red and white are worn by graduates who are members of the college’s chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, the Honor Society of the National Communication Association. Honor Cords of red, yellow and blue are worn by graduates who are members of the college’s chapter of Iota Tau Alpha, the National Honor Society for Athletic Training Education. Sashes of gold are worn by graduates who are senior class or Student Government Association officers. Sashes of blue are worn by the graduate marshals who are chosen from the faculty and staff by vote of the senior class. The graduate marshals escort the graduates and maintain the proper marching order as the graduates receive their diplomas. Tassels of gold are worn by students who will graduate with honors of summa cum laude, magna cum laude or cum laude. Cords of navy blue and orange are worn by graduates who participated in a Colby-Sawyer international or off-campus study program. The Ceremonial Collar, worn by President Thomas C. Galligan Jr., is emblematic of the presidential office. Its central portion is a silver pendant that displays the Colby-Sawyer College seal. On the obverse, in tiny, cut diamonds, the initials S.F.C. signify Susan Farnum Colby, who married James B. Colgate. She served as the first teacher and principal of Colby Academy, the institution that formed the foundation upon which the present college is built. The college seal is enriched by a laurel wreath and surmounted by the star from the state seal, signifying the authority granted to the college by the State of New Hampshire. Symbolic of the bond that joins Colby Academy to Colby-Sawyer College is the Colgate family coat of arms in the central portion of the insignia. Both Susan Farnum Colby Colgate and her daughter, Mary Colgate, offered material assistance during the crucial early days of the institution. It is fitting that one of the medallions bound to the coat of arms by silver links is emblazoned with an engraving of Colby Academy and the other with an engraving of Colgate Hall. Susan Colby taught in the Academy Building, which was erected in 1837. Colby-Sawyer students study to this day in Colgate Hall, one of the gifts of Mary Colgate.
