HONORARY DOCTOR OF HUMANE LETTERS (L.H.D.) Colby-Sawyer’s Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree recognizes an individual of humanitarian character and superior intellect whose life and work have brought about positive, far-reaching consequences for individuals and organizations. THOMAS R. HORGAN President and CEO, New Hampshire College & University Council Thomas R. Horgan has been the president and CEO of the New Hampshire College & University Council since 1993. Previously, he served as president of the Nebraska Independent College Foundation (NICF) and as a state senator in Nebraska.

Hampshire and in the establishment of the Unique College Savings Plan. He is a delegate to the New England Board of Higher Education and a Commissioner to the Education Commission of the States. A resident of Manchester, N.H., Dr. Horgan holds an undergraduate degree from Morningside College, an M.P.A. from the University of Nebraska and an Ed.D. from New England College.

Dr. Horgan is the immediate past chair of the National Association for Collaborative Leaders, and he was instrumental in the founding of Campus Compact for New

JACK JENSEN AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING The Jack Jensen Award for Excellence in Teaching is the college’s highest teaching award. It honors a teacher who communicates high expectations and encourages intellectual curiosity within and across disciplines; respects diverse talents and ways of learning and uses variety in instruction; and engages students and inspires them to do their best work. The award is named for the late Professor Jack Jensen who, through his dedication to teaching, inspired faculty and students alike. JOAN M. HUBER Assistant Professor of Nursing and Public Health Assistant Professor of Nursing and Public Health Joan M. Huber served in the U.S. Navy for 30 years as a critical care clinical nurse specialist, nurse administrator, chief operating officer and chief executive officer of a naval hospital before retiring with the rank of captain. She was also Senior White House Nurse during the Reagan and Bush administrations.

crystal-clear teaching style and high expectations. Professor Huber goes above and beyond to prepare her students for their careers; one graduating nursing major calls her “the gold standard” when it comes to encouraging confidence and growth. A resident of Grantham, N.H., Professor Huber holds a B.S.N. from Villanova University and an M.S. as a critical care clinical nurse specialist from the University of California San Francisco.

She has taught at Colby-Sawyer since 2001; students call her the heart of the nursing program and admire her organization,

DAVID H. WINTON BACCALAUREATE AWARD The David H. Winton Baccalaureate Award is presented to the baccalaureate degree graduate who ranks highest in scholarship among those in the graduating class. KHANG XUAN “KYLE” VU Khang Xuan “Kyle” Vu earned the History and Political Studies Capstone Award for his research project “A Shrimp Among Whales: South Korea’s Strategy for a Rising China and a Dominant America.” A member of the Wesson Honors Program, he also completed an Honors Capstone project, “Japan-South Korea Relations: Same Bed, Different Dreams.”

and as a first-year student had an article published on thediplomat.com. A member of the national honor society Alpha Chi and the Dean’s List, Kyle shared his knowledge and passion for history with others as a tutor at the Student Learning Collaborative. He worked in the Wesson Honors Suite as an event host and was an advocate of the program he credits with increasing his confidence in conducting independent research projects.

From Hanoi, Vietnam, Kyle is a graduate of Thornton Academy in Saco, Maine. He arrived at Colby-Sawyer eager to dive into intellectual pursuits and established himself as an engaged leader in the classroom, where he often started and sustained lively discussions. A self-styled international relations analyst, Kyle found his voice early

Kyle completed an internship with the Institute for Foreign Policy and Strategic Studies Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam in Hanoi. In the fall, he will enter graduate studies at Dartmouth College.

COLBY-SAWYER AWARD The Colby-Sawyer Award is given to the senior who, in the opinion of the faculty, best exemplifies the ideals of the college in personal dignity, intellectual growth, contributions to campus life and constructive influence on other students. DEEPESH DUWADI Recognized as a scholar and leader on campus, Deepesh Duwadi of Dhading, Nepal, earned the Biology Capstone Award along with Anishma Shrestha ’17 for their project “Investigation of Antimicrobial Peptides (AMPs) from Insects.”

A Dean’s List student, much of Deepesh’s time is devoted to pursuing groundbreaking research. Last summer, he completed a research assistantship with New Hampshire IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence testing the efficacy of a specific peptide sequence on lab mice infected with E. coli.

An active member of the Colby-Sawyer community, Deepesh has served as a resident assistant, as a member of the Presidential Blue Key Society and as president of the Biology Club. He has also volunteered in New London Hospital’s Emergency Department.

As a member of the Wesson Honors Program, Deepesh organized a relief trip following the 2015 Nepali earthquake. He also received Wesson Honors IDEA grants to fund independent projects.

SENIOR COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER The Class of 2017 Commencement Speaker Medal is presented to a student who represents the character of the graduating class and will give an inspirational and engaging speech that represents the college’s values and learning outcomes. MATTHEW NOSAL Matthew Nosal, an English and creative writing double major from Manchester, N.H., is passionate about all forms of human expression and has shared his talents in almost every area of student life. He completed a Capstone project for each major and was awarded the Creative Writing Capstone Award for his work “Reading Words and Pictures: A Contextualization of Image Macro Poetry,” which explores the intersection of visual art and poetry in the digital age. He also earned the Creative Writing Baccalaureate Award.

Matthew possesses a strong command of language and is skilled at writing in a variety of contexts. “He excels in the art of synthesizing his thinking in essays, poetry and prose, and he speaks with confidence and highly entertaining and engaging ways,” said a faculty member who nominated him to be the Senior Commencement Speaker. Matthew has shared his voice as an intern and student employee in the Office of College Communications where he contributed content to the Colby-Sawyer website and magazine. As an intern in the Fine and Performing Arts Department, he worked on the catalog for the upcoming exhibition Inner Visions: Selections from the Collection of Beverly Stearns Bernson ’55. He has also published poetry and other creative work in literary magazines such as Spy Kids Review, MICRO//MACRO and The Collagist.

Matthew was vice president of Vocally Charged A Capella, president of Word Order and secretary of Philosophy Club. He was a member of Improv Anonymous and participated in several SNAFU theater festivals as a writer, director and actor. Matthew competed with the men’s cross country team all four years and with the men’s track and field team for two. He was twice named to the NAC AllAcademic Team, and he helped lead the Chargers to the 2016 NAC Cross Country Championship where they took home the program’s first conference title.

“Matthew has emerged at Colby-Sawyer as an outgoing, bright student dedicated to this college’s daily life in and out of the classroom, and completely convinced of this college’s effect on his life,” said one of his professors.

ACADEMIC REGALIA The gown worn by a bachelor is distinguished by long, pointed sleeves. The gown worn by a master has oblong sleeves. The gown of a doctor has rounded sleeves, velvet panels around the neck and down the front, and three velvet bars on the sleeves. Hoods are lined in silk in the official colors of the institution granting the degree. For Colby-Sawyer College those colors are royal blue and white. The color of the hood trim indicates the degree earned. The hoods are trimmed in white for bachelor of arts, brown for bachelor of fine arts and gold for bachelor of science. Honor cords of blue and green are worn by graduates who are members of the college’s chapter of the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society. Honor cords of blue and white are worn by graduates who have earned the college’s Wesson Honors Program Scholars Certificate. Honor cords of platinum and blue are worn by graduates who are members of the college’s chapter of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology. Honor cords of lavender and white are worn by members of the college’s chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, the Honor Society of Nursing. Honor cords of green and gold are worn by graduates who are members of the college’s chapter of Sigma Beta Delta International Honor Society in Business, Management and Administration. Honor cords of red and white are worn by graduates who are members of the college’s chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, the Honor Society of the National Communication Association. Honor cords of red, yellow and blue are worn by graduates who are members of the college’s chapter of Iota Tau Alpha, the National Honor Society for Athletic Training Education. Sashes of gold are worn by graduates who are senior class or Student Government Association officers. Sashes of blue are worn by the graduate marshals who are chosen from the faculty and staff by vote of the senior class. The graduate marshals escort the graduates and maintain the proper marching order as the graduates receive their diplomas. Tassels of gold are worn by students who will graduate with honors of summa cum laude, magna cum laude or cum laude. Cords of navy blue and orange are worn by graduates who participated in a Colby-Sawyer international or off-campus study program. The ceremonial collar, worn by President Susan D. Stuebner, is emblematic of the presidential office. Its central portion is a silver pendant that displays the Colby-Sawyer College seal. On the obverse, in tiny, cut diamonds, the initials S.F.C. signify Susan Farnum Colby, who married James B. Colgate. She served as the first teacher and principal of Colby Academy, the institution that formed the foundation upon which the present college is built. The college seal is enriched by a laurel wreath and surmounted by the star from the state seal, signifying the authority granted to the college by the State of New Hampshire. Symbolic of the bond that joins Colby Academy to Colby-Sawyer College is the Colgate family coat of arms in the central portion of the insignia. Both Susan Farnum Colby Colgate and her daughter, Mary Colgate, offered material assistance during the crucial early days of the institution. It is fitting that one of the medallions bound to the coat of arms by silver links is emblazoned with an engraving of Colby Academy and the other with an engraving of Colgate Hall. Susan Colby taught in the Academy Building, which was erected in 1837. Colby-Sawyer students study to this day in Colgate Hall, one of the gifts of Mary Colgate.
