ALUMNI ASSOCIATION DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes a graduate who has made a distinctive and unique contribution to his or her profession and to society.

NANCY HOYT LANGBEIN ’56 In the Colby-Sawyer universe, there are few alumni who have done more than Nancy Hoyt Langbein to unite her class or to ensure that students have the opportunity to experience all that Colby-Sawyer has to offer.

30 years, earning her the unofficial title of Colby-Sawyer’s Maine Ambassador. Nancy and her husband, Ed, have hosted countless events in Mid-Coast Maine, including at their home. Ed, a graduate of Bowdoin College, and Nancy both recognize the importance of supporting the academic institutions that played such instrumental roles in their lives.

Since graduating with her associate degree in liberal arts from Colby Junior College in 1956, Nancy has been one of the college’s most devoted alumni and loyal supporters. She is her class’s correspondent and has served as class agent since 1986, making her one of the college’s longest serving class volunteers. She has served on several of her class’s reunion committees. For the Class of 1956’s 50th reunion, Nancy spearheaded a gift campaign that exceeded its goal and established the first endowment for the Fine and Performing Arts Department. In 2006, her efforts on behalf of her class and college were recognized with the Colby-Sawyer Alumni Service Award.

In 2004, to reflect Nancy’s appreciation for the wonderful college experience that she and her late sister Barbara Hoyt Baker ’49 MT enjoyed in New London, the couple joined Colby-Sawyer’s Heritage Society and established the Langbein Family Endowed Scholarship, which provides support for Maine students. They have also contributed to every capital project and campaign since 1956 and have made annual leadership gifts to the Colby-Sawyer Fund. For her extraordinary contributions of support, financial and otherwise, to the college and to students’ futures over the last six decades, Colby-Sawyer is thankful to count Nancy Hoyt Langbein among its alumni and proud to recognize her with the Distinguished Alumni Award.

Nancy received her bachelor’s degree in child study from Tufts University in 1958. She is now a resident of Brunswick, Maine, and has attended every alumni event held along the state’s I-95 corridor for the past

HONORARY DOCTOR OF HUMANE LETTERS (L.H.D.) Colby-Sawyer’s Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree recognizes an individual of humanitarian character and superior intellect whose life and work have brought about positive, far-reaching consequences for individuals and organizations.

REBECCA BREWSTER IRVING ’42 professor emerita

Starting in 1954, Professor Emerita Rebecca Brewster Irving taught for 28 years in the Medical Technology Program from which she graduated.

also maintains relationships with scores of her former students, some of whom endowed a scholarship in her name that supports a student in a health care-related major whose values reflect and exemplify Professor Irving’s strength and integrity as well as her desire to learn, educate and help others by “passing it on.”

In 1978, she was recognized with the Alumnae Service Award. She retired in 1982, respected by her colleagues and beloved by students and alumni.

This is Rebecca Brewster Irving’s legacy: to give all that she has to future generations and to hear the echoes of her care, expertise and guidance come back to her time and again.

The influence of an excellent and inspiring teacher does not simply end with retirement, however, and Professor Irving continues to stay in touch with her alma mater, regularly attending the Annual Faculty Emeriti Luncheon. She

DEBORAH A. “DEB” TAYLOR, PH.D. ACADEMIC VICE PRESIDENT AND DEAN OF FACULTY

Academic Vice President and Dean of Faculty Deborah A. Taylor’s commitment to Colby-Sawyer extends beyond the administrative roles in which she has served so well since coming to the college in 1976.

preparing students for the workforce and graduate school. In 1997, Vice President Taylor was awarded the college’s highest teaching award, the Jack Jensen Award for Excellence in Teaching, and she was recognized the following year by the New Hampshire Department of Education with the New Hampshire Excellence in Education Award for Higher Education.

As one of the longest serving faculty members in the college’s history, she has shaped the lives of hundreds of students at Colby-Sawyer and spanned generations, as the children of some of her former students later took classes with her. Graduates continue to drop by to say hello years after studying with her. Colleagues admire her ability to communicate clearly, her warmth for students, her passion for psychology and the academy, and her dedication to

Vice President Taylor, a resident of New London, holds an A.B. from Cornell University and an M.S. and Ph.D. from Rutgers University.

SUSAN COLGATE CLEVELAND MEDAL FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE The Colgate Cleveland Medal for Distinguished Service is the college’s highest honor. It is presented to individuals who exemplify Susan Colgate Cleveland’s attributes, ensuring that her work, dedication and influence will be remembered by future generations.

THOMAS C. “TOM” CSATARI, J.D. chair of the board of trustees

Thomas C. “Tom” Csatari of Hanover, N.H., joined the Colby-Sawyer Board of Trustees in 2005, chaired the Academic Affairs Committee for three years, and has served as chair of the board since 2011.

A committed friend and supporter of the college, Tom and his wife, Judy, have been generous benefactors, as demonstrated by the creation of the Gladys A. Burrows Distinguished Professorship in Nursing in 2009. The college’s first professorship in nursing is named in memory of Judy’s mother, who served as a hospital trustee for many years. Support for the nursing program was also influenced by Tom’s work as a health care attorney and the fact that Judy’s grandmother spent her career as a nurse.

Respected for his intelligence, compassion and dedication, Tom has played an important role in the development of the Power of Infinity Campaign while spearheading the college’s increased focus on marketing and branding. When his term as board chair ends on June 30, he will continue to serve as a member of the Power of Infinity Campaign Steering Committee.

Tom holds a bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College and a Doctor of Juris prudence from the Vanderbilt University School of Law.

DEBORAH A. “DEB” TAYLOR, PH.D. academic vice president and dean of faculty

For 40 years, Academic Vice President and Dean of Faculty Deborah A. “Deb” Taylor has been dedicated to Colby-Sawyer.

Vice President Taylor oversaw the transformation of the college’s curriculum, regular reaccreditations, multiple improvements of the college’s Liberal Arts Program, and a tremendous expansion of the faculty: 63 percent of the current faculty was hired during her tenure.

After pursuing her undergraduate degree at Cornell University and earning an M.S. and Ph.D. from Rutgers University, Vice President Taylor joined the faculty as an instructor in social and behavioral studies. Recognized as a leader, mentor and role model, Vice President Taylor moved into a series of administrative roles including dean of students, vice president of Student Development, chair of the Department of Social Sciences and Education, academic dean, and, finally, academic vice president and dean of faculty.

Vice President Taylor has been an instrumental part of Colby-Sawyer’s growth from a women’s college primarily granting associate degrees to a baccalaureate women’s college, and from an undergraduate college to an institution poised to offer its first graduate program, a Master of Science in Nursing, in the fall.

Originally from New Jersey, Brad completed his undergraduate degree at the University of New Hampshire and earned his J.D. from Cornell University Law School. standards challenge students and bring out the best in them so that they meet his expectations and exceed their own. Often, a course with him results in a newfound love for film and literature.

An esteemed faculty member at the college since 1977, Professor Patrick D. “Pat” Anderson has worked tirelessly to share his intense interest in, and knowledge of, film, American literature and Native American studies with students at Colby-Sawyer and beyond.

Professor Anderson has traveled the state for more than 25 years giving presentations as part of the New Hampshire Humanities Council’s Humanities to Go series. He has also done extensive local programming, including at schools and libraries. In doing so, Professor Anderson has represented Colby-Sawyer in the most effective way imaginable by sharing the joy of learning.

In the classroom, students note the effort and thought Professor Anderson puts into teaching the subjects for which he has so much passion. JUDITH POND CONDICT ’62 AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN SERVICE § MARY MCLAUGHLIN, M.ED. director of residential education

The Judith Condict ’62 Award for Excellence in Service is presented to a full-time staff member who, through exemplary work accomplishments, has made an outstanding contribution to the college and its mission of educating students.

In addition to Mary’s contributions at Colby-Sawyer, she is also a source of inspiration, solace and strength for families around the world. She shares the joys and challenges of life with an autistic family member in her blog “Mom–Not Otherwise Specified.” Her writing has been featured by The Huffington Post, and one of her essays has been published in Gravity Pulls You In: Perspectives on Parenting Children on the Autism Spectrum. In 2010, Mary was recognized at Commencement with the Gown Award for her efforts in autism awareness.

For 20 years, Mary McLaughlin has served as the director of Residential Education at Colby-Sawyer, overseeing all aspects of residence hall management including programming, crisis management, room assignments and changes, and facilities management. Her interactions with students in the face of challenging situations create opportunities for student learning outside of the classroom and identify her as a staff member who uses her role to educate.

Mary, who lives in New London, holds a B.A. in communication from the University of New Hampshire and an M.Ed. in higher education and student affairs administration from the University of Vermont.

NANCY BEYER OPLER ’56 AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN ADVISING § KATHLEEN P. FARRELL, PH.D. associate professor of social sciences and education

This award recognizes a faculty member who is accessible to advisees; makes a meaningful connection with advisees that continues over time; supports advisees in academic and professional planning; and facilitates their adjustment to the community.

A scholar in sociology, gender and sexuality studies, and popular culture, Professor Farrell is committed to studying and alleviating social inequalities, leading students in initiatives that support LGBTQ members of the Colby-Sawyer community. She is the faculty adviser for PRIDE, a member of the Sexual Assault Task Force, and she received the college’s Gown Award in 2012 for her role on the steering committee that organized The New Hampshire Women’s Caucus.

Professor Kathleen Farrell embodies what makes the adviser-advisee relationship so special at Colby-Sawyer: She is willing to lend an ear and share her wisdom, but she does so without eroding her advisees’ autonomy. Her emphasis that each advisee must make his or her own decisions, thus becoming the author of his or her own academic success, is a trait her students appreciate and respect.

Professor Farrell joined the Colby-Sawyer faculty in 2009. She holds a B.A. from Trinity College and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Syracuse University, where she also earned a Certificate of Advanced Study in Women’s Studies. She lives in Webster, N.H.

ACADEMIC REGALIA The gown worn by a bachelor is distinguished by long, pointed sleeves. The gown worn by a master has oblong sleeves. The gown of a doctor has rounded sleeves, velvet panels around the neck and down the front, and three velvet bars on the sleeves. Hoods are lined in silk in the official colors of the institution granting the degree. For Colby-Sawyer College those colors are royal blue and white. The color of the hood trim indicates the degree earned. The hoods are trimmed in white for bachelor of arts, brown for bachelor of fine arts and gold for bachelor of science. Honor cords of blue and green are worn by graduates who are members of the college’s chapter of the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society. Honor cords of blue and white are worn by graduates who have earned the college’s Wesson Honors Program Scholars Certificate. Honor cords of platinum and blue are worn by graduates who are members of the college’s chapter of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology. Honor cords of purple and white are worn by graduates who are members of the Colby-Sawyer College Honor Society for Nursing. Honor cords of green and gold are worn by graduates who are members of the college’s chapter of Sigma Beta Delta International Honor Society in Business, Management and Administration. Honor cords of red and white are worn by graduates who are members of the college’s chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, the Honor Society of the National Communication Association. Honor Cords of red, yellow and blue are worn by graduates who are members of the college’s chapter of Iota Tau Alpha, the National Honor Society for Athletic Training Education. Sashes of gold are worn by graduates who are senior class or Student Government Association officers. Sashes of blue are worn by the graduate marshals who are chosen from the faculty and staff by vote of the senior class. The graduate marshals escort the graduates and maintain the proper marching order as the graduates receive their diplomas. Tassels of gold are worn by students who will graduate with honors of summa cum laude, magna cum laude or cum laude. Cords of navy blue and orange are worn by graduates who participated in a Colby-Sawyer international or off-campus study program. The ceremonial collar, worn by President Thomas C. Galligan Jr., is emblematic of the presidential office. Its central portion is a silver pendant that displays the Colby-Sawyer College seal. On the obverse, in tiny, cut diamonds, the initials S.F.C. signify Susan Farnum Colby, who married James B. Colgate. She served as the first teacher and principal of Colby Academy, the institution that formed the foundation upon which the present college is built. The college seal is enriched by a laurel wreath and surmounted by the star from the state seal, signifying the authority granted to the college by the State of New Hampshire. Symbolic of the bond that joins Colby Academy to Colby-Sawyer College is the Colgate family coat of arms in the central portion of the insignia. Both Susan Farnum Colby Colgate and her daughter, Mary Colgate, offered material assistance during the crucial early days of the institution. It is fitting that one of the medallions bound to the coat of arms by silver links is emblazoned with an engraving of Colby Academy and the other with an engraving of Colgate Hall. Susan Colby taught in the Academy Building, which was erected in 1837. Colby-Sawyer students study to this day in Colgate Hall, one of the gifts of Mary Colgate.
