Welcome to CGS

This manual seeks to summarise information and procedures relating to the operation of the school. It is presented in a brief and simple format to assist you in a smooth and productive time at the school.

Placement Students are encouraged to speak to their Supervisor about any concerns, queries or anxieties they may have.

CGS Overview Values & School Structure

CGS aims to develop and maintain a culture which values academic achievement, knowledge and skill, whilst nurturing and encouraging positive interpersonal relationships, diversity, integrity and a commitment to the service of others.

The School has three distinct, yet intertwined areas:

- Junior School - Pre-Prep to Year 5

- Middle School - Year 6-8

- Senior School - Year 9-12

House System

Each Middle and Senior School student represents one of eight House groups:

Middle School School students are apart of Form Groups, building connection with the same student group through core subjects and pastoral care. Senior School Students group Tutor Groups where their consistent Tutor provides ongoing pastoral care throughout their final four years of schooling.

CGS Sport

CGS Sport aims to foster a passion for sport within all students; a passion that is alive not only during their schooling but for the duration of their lives. To this end, CGS Sport continues to offer a large variety of sports for students to enjoy that cater for athletes of all abilities.

CGS Sport further aims to provide a safe, interactive and friendly environment in which students can enjoy the sportsmanship, comradery and thrill of competitive sport.

CGS Students are required to participate in a Summer Season (Term 1 & 4) and Winter Season (Term 2 & 3) sport, with Spring Season (Term 3) remaining optional.

Sports Academy

CGS Students can support their educational journey with a sport portfolio beyond the existing sport program. There are currently two options the students can select from within their favoured sport.

The first option is the Emerging Athlete Pathway (EAP), which is a program specifically designed for students performing at a State or National level within their chosen sport.

The second option is the Personalised Coaching Programme (PCP) which entails private coaching for students, or groups of up to four, before, during or after the educational day.

Camberwell Grammar Aquatic (CGA) incorporates both a Learn to Swim and Squad Program model, catering for all levels of skill and development.

Squads are broken into four distinct levels:

- Advancement

- Intermediate

- Fitness

- Senior/Performance

Established in 2018, CGS S&C aims to provides a participation-first strength and conditioning program, where students foster a love of training, building competency and healthy habits which students can further expand once they graduate.

CGS S&C strives to make students better through all performance, whether that be athletic, mental, social, academic or co-curricular. We take a holistic approach to training and ensure a student's mental and physical wellbeing remains the focus at all times.

HSE302 at CGS

Overview & Outcomes

The HSE302 practicum experience aims to provide students with the opportunity to work (under appropriate supervision) with clients who are undertaking an exercise intervention to improve their health and fitness, wellbeing or performance, or for the prevention of chronic conditions.

CGS S&C aims to provide HSE302 students:

- A balanced student experience, allowing students to observe, learn and apply practical knowledge in a range of settings

- An opportunity to learn and be exposed to a variety of S&C and Sport coaches

- A chance to develop leadership and interpersonal skills suitable for one-on-one and group coaching

- An opportunity to learn and develop in areas of passion

HSE302 Desired Outcome

CGS S&C Implementation

Competently and safely conduct a health and exercise evaluation, assess physical activity status, interpret the results and communicate the findings Shadow coach-student conversations and actively assess athletes during Weights Room access times

Design, and modify as necessary, safe, appropriate and effective exercise programs, based on best practice, for the apparently healthy population, in a variety of environments that are aligned with the health, fitness and performance needs and goals of clients

Deliver, in-person or remotely, an exercise program that includes the instruction and leadership of individual and group exercise sessions and is based on best practice to meet the specific health, fitness and performance goals of apparently health clients

Deliver an exercise program for clients with pathology or injury that has been prescribed by an appropriately qualified health professional

After an initial period of shadowing an individual athlete or group (Sports Academy, PE, First Sport teams), design an individual training plan and training block through TeamBuildr, in consultation with a CGS S&C Coach

Following a predetermined structure, provide best coaching instruction to athletes both individually and in a group setting (as per above), meeting the outcomes of the athlete(s)

Work within the Injury Management team to understand assessment and programming protocol

Week 1-2

Overview

General

- Campus Tour

- Introduction to key staff with CGS Sport

- Organise swipe card, IT support and TeamBuildr (TB) account

- Review CGS S&C Code of Conduct and Values

- Review CGS S&C programs and delve into specific programming requirements

- Conversation with Josh Holding - Strength and Conditioning Coordinator:

- Aims of TB

- Discussion of level based TB programming and competency aims of each level

- Current season (Summer/Winter/Spring) overview

Involvement

- Observe as many Weights Room sessions as possible, building an understanding of the space, flow of sessions and coach expectations with athletes.

- Become familiar with expectations of placement period

Outcomes

- Understand process of entire placement period

- Understand CGS S&C training philosophies and programming standards

Week 3-4

Overview General

- Scheduled check in with Paul Sartori

- Overview of CGS S&C programming methods and practices

- Conversation with Jeff Dalman: - Strength and Rehabilitation Coach

- Overview of Injury Management system

- Overview of CGA

Involvement

- Exposure to Sports Academy sessions, joining in and assessing coaching styles across multiple sports

- Utilising VALD ForceDecks and Dynamo, be involved with fitness/performance testing and data analytics

- In conjunction with use of TB, develop components of an S&C program (warm-up, strength, core, recovery) for a PE or Sport Squad

- If confident, coach components of an S&C program (under supervision)

- Student to gain confidence and understanding of best-practice coaching methods.

Outcomes

- Establish and refine coaching techniques and ability

- Continue to build rapport with S&C users (CGS Students/Staff and community-facing athletes)

Week 5-6

Overview

General

- Scheduled check in with Paul Sartori

- CGS S&C Exercise Progression/Regression discussion

- Utilise TB to build an individualised and group training program

Involvement

- If confident, coach larger components of an S&C program (under supervision)

- Other tasks as required

- Gain experience in leading larger components of a individual and group training sessions

Outcomes

- Build understanding of exercise progression and regression used at CGS and training variable manipulation.

Week 7-10

Overview

General

- Scheduled check in with Paul Sartori

- Final check-in conversation

- CGS Staff to provide feedback on student’s placement period

- Review CGS S&C programs and practices

- Student provided the opportunity to share any feedback on placement period

- Utilise TB to build a training block for an individualised athlete and sport group, incorporating strength training and conditioning programming

Involvement

Outcomes

- Lead athletes through full individualised and group training sessions (under supervision)

- Student-led additional program involvement

- Refine coaching skills and enhance ability to lead athletes through an entire program

- Explore coaching methods and application to promote best practices

Staff Toilets and Change Rooms:

Staff and Placement Students are required to access Staff Only Toilet and Change Rooms. The closest Staff Change Rooms can be accessed via the eastern exit of the Weights Room. Additional Staff Change Rooms can be found on Level 1 and 3 of the Sports Building.

Food Storage and Kitchen Access:

The Weights Room Office has a fridge and microwave for Placement Student use. Additional kitchen access can be found on Level 1 and 3 of the Sports Building, including a coffee machine on Level 3.

Car Parking:

The Underground Carpark is accessible through Gate 3, off Mont Albert Rd.

Professional Dress:

Please wear your Deakin polo and comfortable sport shorts/leggings and runners

On-Site First Aid:

On-site First Aid can be found at Roysted, next to the school’s Main Reception. Jacinta Sonego (Health Centre Manager) will be able to assist as required.

Emergency Evacuation Procedure:

The Sports Building main evacuation point is the KAO. Please follow the guidance of Area Wardens and evacuate as required.

CGS General Housekeeping

Swipe Cards:

S&C Placement Students will be issued with swipe cards on a lanyard from the Facilities Team. These swipe cards need to be returned upon completion of your placement and departure from Camberwell Grammar.

Canteen:

The Canteen is located in the Performing Arts Building next to the JTO. Food and coffee is available for purchase from 7am to 1:30pm each school day.

CGS IT Systems

DEEDS

DEEDS is a learning management system that the school uses to communicate with students and staff.

The CGS S&C utilise DEEDS to:

Disseminating scheduling and access information

Remind students of upcoming events and sessions

Distribute surveys and reports online reporting and assessment for various classes

TeamBuildr

All S&C related content is managed via TeamBuildr. All MS and SS Student have access to an account and can view their training plan via their own device or iPads within the Weights Room.
