Johnny & the Dead upils at Ryecroft Middle School have just performed ‘Johnny & the Dead’ a play based on the book by Terry Pratchett. The play tells the story of Johnny Maxwell, a boy who sees dead people. The dead are a harmless bunch but become incensed when they find a huge corporation have bought the graveyard and intend to demolish it. Johnny and his friends decide they will try to save the graveyard.

Gateway Club ouncillor Pauline Morrison presented a cheque for ÂŁ175 to Uttoxeter Gateway Club at their regular Tuesday night meeting recently, held at the Guildhall Balance Street. The funds were the remainder of the charity funds she raised during her year as mayor of Uttoxeter in 2008/2009. The Gateway club provides support and activities for adults with learning difficulties. They raise funds by a variety of means including charity stalls at Lark in the Park and Cracker night. Councillor Pauline Morrison said, "This organisation is important because it provides opportunities to a group of people to get together and develop social skills. There is a great atmosphere at the meetings and everyone really enjoys themselves. Fund raising is a vital part of their activities"

By Gary Hudson ttoxeter’s fifth Lark in the Park had a new attraction which revived memories of the town’s carnival in years gone by. A parade from the High Street to the site of the free family fun day in Bramshall Road park included classic cars, vintage fire engines and walkers in fancy dress. It was led by a float carrying the town’s brass band, followed by the borough mayor in his ceremonial car and Uttoxeter’s town mayor and new MP on foot. Thousands of people visited the event during the afternoon, and the organisers believe the larger-than-ever crowds were partly a result of people seeing and hearing the parade through the town. Apart from a brief shower early in the afternoon, the sun shone for most of the day.

Uttoxeter Lions Club, who run the event with support from East Staffordshire Borough Council, say it was the best Lark in the Park so far, and they want to hear from local people with suggestions of ways to improve it further. The Lions Club president Steve Shields said: ‘The Town Band did us proud leading the parade and I would like to thank all who took part and the police team for their help and support. The involvement of ESBC Mayor, David Leese, Town Mayor David Brookes and Andrew Griffiths MP gives us encouragement to keep the event going – providing of course that the Borough Council can provide the funding in future. ‘We would like the public’s opinion as to whether they would like a parade to continue. It was put together quite quickly this year and to improve on it many months of preparation are needed.’
The arena entertainment included father and daughter Tony Brutus and Amanda performing feats of strength – many of them involving members of the audience. The emergency vehicle preservation group run by Dave Chown put on a fire-fighting display which included the chance for dozens of children to help operate the hoses. There were sideshows, a climbing wall and fairground rides for children, and a charity duck race along the brook at the end of the afternoon. Uttoxeter Lions say they were delighted at the success of the event and pleased that local charitable organisations who took stalls at the event were able to raise hundreds of pounds for themselves. AHS librarian Eleanor Shakespeare alongside teachers and librarians from all schools in the Alleyne’s pyramid celebrated a tidal wave of reading related fun recently. The slogan 'No-one left behind' was never more successfully demonstrated as students of all ages read, listened and wrote - together. In all there were 6000 opportunities for students to meet, listen to or work with an author. These ranged from the multi cultural teen appeal of the amiable and amusing Bali Rai to the effervescent charm of Michael Rosen who, at one stage, was simultaneously discussing ‘A’ level texts with sixth formers while chatting about word play with students from year nine. These students will never forget hearing their poems read aloud by the Children’s Laureate of 2007-9! Not only that but he signed their work and added a personal message! Anne Evans, author of The Beast Trilogy ran a writing workshop with students from each of the middle schools and students from Thomas Alleyne’s 4500 students in total were involved in similar author experiences with seventeen authors covering all ages, abilities and interests. The reading wave was not limited to schools and splashed out to include Uttoxeter recently when Michael Rosen joined an audience of over 200 including students from all the schools in Uttoxeter. Brought together to read in the Market Square more and more passersby joined to make it a truly memorable experience with all ages represented from tiny toddlers to the more mature members of Uttoxeter! The mayor and many head teachers were also present with their books and being part of the event literally brought us all together! Michael Rosen showed what a true showman he is as he taught a poem – written on the train on his way up – to the assembled audience and even managed to make a positive out of the traffic thundering past! Even this was not the full tsunami of the reading wave. It grew to include an audience of over 1,200 at the race course where,over the course of the afternoon, Michael Rosen discussed writing and topics ranging from Yiddish and the Holocaust to the way an argument sounds. He struck a chord in all who listened and sent us off to ‘have a go ourselves’ as one student put it. The afternoon was especially moving watching many of the very youngest children joining in with words and actions. The Cinebowl then played host to the 'Reading Champions' Quiz with all schools represented in competitions for Y3 and Y4, Y5 and Y6, and Y7,8 and 9. Winners in each group were St Mary’s, Oldfields Hall Middle school and Thomas Alleyne’s . Again the hard work and efforts of students, teachers and librarians shone through, alongside their very evident enjoyment. Finally Uttoxeter Library played host to representatives from Ryecroft, Windsor Park, Oldfields and Thomas Alleynes for a ‘Strawberries and Shortlist’ event. Here the difficult decision as to which book to put forward as our choice for the winner of the Young Teen Fiction award for 2010 was made more difficult by the excellent presentations devised and performed by the student readers! Drama, music, rap and reportage combined to make this a memorable occasion and, again, showed schools working together. We were also lucky to have our German exchange students present and their teacher was really impressed by the way we were encouraging reading! Truly in this case the sum of the parts was greater than the whole and we’d all like to thank Mrs Shakespeare for all her hard work, good humour, and amazing organisational skills!

The Bride spent the night before the wedding at my mum’s house in Oakamoor with my parents and my two best friends, Becky Carr and Rebecca Brassington (who were to be two of my bridesmaids). We all woke up at about 6.30 am feeling very excited but I was also feeling extremely nervous. Whilst we were getting ready to go the hairdresser’s Martin’s best man, Steve Wilson turned up un-expectantly with a gift for me from Martin, which was a beautiful watch to wear on the day. Myself, Becky and Rebecca went to ‘Panache’ together to have our hair put up and I had my make-up done. They did an excellent job and are hair looked lovely. We then went back to my parents house where my Dad was anxiously waiting for us to return (I think he was feeling very nervous too). My flowers had arrived which were perfect! And then my other 2 bridesmaids arrived to get ready- Lucy Richardson (my cousin) and my goddaughter Ellie Rowcliffe. We all had a few glasses of champagne to try and settle the nerves and I gave gifts to the bridesmaids to say thank you for all their help and being part of our special day, I also gave my Dad a set of ‘Father of the Bride’ cufflinks. It was now time for the bridesmaids and my Mum to get ready; they all looked so beautiful when they come down the stairs. The 3 older bridesmaids wore full-length, deep, purple dresses and they looked perfect whilst my goddaughter wore an ivory dress

with a tulle skirt with butterflies on it to match my theme, I think she liked it as she kept twirling round the garden; she looked like a little princess. My Mum then helped me to get into my dress, I had some photo’s whilst getting ready and then it was time to go downstairs. At this point I was feeling very emotional, my Dad hadn’t seen me in my dress before and he met me at the bottom of the stairs. There were a few tears but I managed to stop the mascara running. I then had some photo’s with my bridesmaids and my Mum and Dad whilst the Bentley Arnage waited patiently for my Mum, Becky, Rebecca and Lucy to get in and be taken to the church so he could come back and get me and my Dad, Ellie travelled to church with her Mum, Dad and baby brother Harry. Denise took a few more pictures of myself and then left for church leaving me and my Dad waiting anxiously. When the Bentley picked us up we had another glass of champagne whilst travelling to church and I felt a little more relaxed until I could see the church and lots of people outside waiting for me to arrive, including friends, family and parents and children from work. I got out of the car to be greeted by my bridesmaids and Father Paul Whieldon who was conducting the service. My Dad walked me down the aisle with my bridesmaids following, I looked down most of the time so I didn’t cry but I remember looking up and seeing Martin at the end with a big smile on his face which made me feel a lot better, although he did look nervous.

The Groom was woken up at 7.30a.m. with an abundance of phone calls from my groomsmen- Steven Wilson (best man) Mark Carr, Alex Pentecost, Stef Lilikar and Mark Durose, shortly after that they all arrived at mine and Hannah’s house, Mark Carr came with oatcakes which were gratefully received by us all. We then got the cars ready with ivory wedding ribbon and bows for the day, but I had to be careful as Hannah was only 2 doors down having her hair done so I had to keep out of the way. When the cars were ready Steve went to pick up my Mum and Dad and we then all went in convoy to Caverswall Castle to get ready. When I got to the Castle I met my sister there and her partner and children and some of our fiends were there too getting ready. We all went to our rooms to get ready and then met downstairs for photos with my

groomsmen and family. Hannah’s Dad had arranged for a friend of his to take myself and Steve (the bestman) in a silver Porsche, so when that arrived I was slightly amazed as I hadn’t seen it before. After a few more photos we were ready to set off for church. Mark Durose drove my car and the others followed in their own cars. I was very nervous when we got to church, but my Dad was there with a little tipple in his hip flask to calm my nerves a little. My groomsmen did a fantastic job and gave out the order of services and seated the guests. Mark Carr walked Hannah’s Mum down the aisle and then I knew it was nearly time. I knew Hannah had arrived when the lads kept saying “don’t turn round yet as she is having her photo taken in the doorway.” When I turned around and saw Hannah walking down the aisle I was overwhelmed by how beautiful she looked.

Just the
perfect day...
Both he wedding service was perfect and we both felt much more relaxed as it went on (although Martin was still feeling a little nervous about his speech). Martin’s Sister Gail Brown and Hannah’s cousin (Ellie’s Mum) Claire Rowcliffe both did a reading in church and they did an excellent job. We walked down the aisle after signing the register feeling very happy and excited about what the day ahead and we were now Mr & Mrs Brown. A few quick hello’s and pictures when we got outside the church and then off we went to Caverswall Castle in the Bentley. It was lovely to have that time together on our own to talk about our day so far and share a few glasses of champagne together. When we arrived at the castle we were the 1st ones there (apart from Denise) and were greeted by the staff with 2 Mojitos to enjoy. We had some photo’s with the car before our guests arrived and then some photos in front of the castle. Our guests enjoyed Mojitos outside the castle whilst the rain held off and then we had photos with our friends and family. We then had some time in the reception rooms to chat to our guests and relax before it was time to go upstairs and eat in the Ceremonial room. We had a sneaky look upstairs before our guests, and the room looked beautiful we were so pleased. At 3.30p.m myself and Martin greeted our guests on the stairs leading up to the Ceremonial room where are wedding breakfast would be served. Our tables were named after our Grandparents as sadly they have all past away so that was our way of making them part of our day. We all enjoyed a wonderful 3 course meal and the speeches that followed were emotional at times, but also filled the room with laughter too. We were having such an amazing day. We then had an hour or so to relax, and freshen up before the evening guests arrived at 7.30p.m. We met our guests at the front entrance of the castle and they were then asked to sign the guest book by Rebecca Brassington who was doing a very good job, before they were shown downstairs to the dungeons where the evening part of our wedding would be held. Dennis from D & G disco’s was doing an excellent job entertaining our guests before we were able to go downstairs and join in with the fun. We had our first dance around 8.30p.m. to ‘Yellow’ by Coldplay, this has always been a song that has reminded us of each other and our time together over the last 10 years. We then carried on dancing whilst the guests enjoyed the Hog Roast and salads which were being served in the conservatory on the courtyard. Everyone was having a good time and the night ended around midnight. The castle was ours until 11 a.m the next day and had 11 rooms including the bridal suite, so our bridesmaids, groomsmen and immediate family and a few close friends were also able to stay in the gorgeous castle. It was really nice to get up the next morning and go and have breakfast with everyone and reminisce about our wonderful day, it was all we ever wished for and more!

Swing Easy! hat do you do in Uttoxeter on a Friday night that is different? If you are stuck for an answer then take a lead from the guests of Indulgence, who pulled out their best dresses, dusted down their dinner jackets and polished their shoes in preparation for a spectacular evening at the coffee lounge. Apparently Swing is the Thing. No swapping of keys or chancing your luck, Indulgence provided these guests an exceptional night of food and swing musical entertainment. Swing has it roots back in the 1930s and is a form of jazz music that became popular in the United States. Swing bands or big bands usually featured soloists and vocalists who would improvise on the melody. The danceable swing style of bandleaders such as Benny Goodman and Count Basie was the dominant form of American popular music from 1935 to 1945. Later popularised by artists like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Junior (The Rat Pack) and more recently with phenomenal success by Michael BublĂŠ. On arriving at 7:00pm the guests were welcomed by David Hunter, a partner in the coffee lounge and treated to a champagne reception in advance of service. Once seated the guests were invited to introduce themselves to their neighbour if they did not already know each other. Having fun and making new friends set the party mood for the evening. Melanie Simpson from Bramshall commented “It’s so much better sitting together than on our own. We feel so much more involved.â€? At 7:30pm David formally welcomed the guests and introduced Andy Allen who is studying music at the London School of Music and has a passion for Swing, he had been entertaining the guests as they arrived. The diners got to enjoy a four course meal some of which delights were, Layers of smoked salmon, cream cheese, crème fraiche, onion and soda bread. Served on a bed of cucumber with a lemon & dill sour cream drizzle; Roast lamb cooked with rosemary, onions and garlic. Served with a blackberry and honey gravy or Goats cheese, garlic and caramelised chopped shallots, cooked in a light herb pastry with a basil & garlic oil dressing. Rounding off the meal with a choice of deserts and cheese and biscuits followed by tea or coffee. Sue Hunter also a partner in the lounge explained that she really enjoyed producing this menu as it was so different to the day time menu. After service and singing from the Great American Songbook the young and talented Andy Allen took to the microphone. His performance seemed casual and effortless but was commanding and very entertaining. So much so, that by the end of the evening, guests were spontaneously dancing between the tables. Andy finished his set and was encouraged to sing on for a further 15 minutes with cheering and clapping from everybody. Jonathan Nason who had brought friends up from Alrewas said ‘This was a most enjoyable social evening, the food was excellent and the entertainment fantastic. We shall definitely be back. I can’t believe I was dancingâ€? Opened at the end of August 2008 and renowned in Uttoxeter as a place to meet friends and eat, Indulgence Coffee Lounge has become, in a short time, one of Uttoxeter’s most popular attractions during the day. Hidden away in a quite courtyard off Market Place Indulgence is offering a variety of themed evenings on a Friday Night and private party bookings. Ginny’s Gardening Guide By Uttoxeter’s Ginny Gibson an anyone tell me how the weathermen get away with predicting torrential rain when in fact the day turns out to be glorious sunshine, does their job description say ‘ you can get away with 50% correct forecasts, after that your fired?’ Last night the weather man predicted doom and gloom on the weather front for today, so I thought my visit to the Rocester Allotments would be a wash out, but I have just left Mr Beardmore and we talked in glorious sunshine... Mr Beardmore has been allotmenting for many years, he wouldn’t divulge the exact number, but we did have a guessing game about his age and I can tell you I got it wrong – gardening keeps you young and is better for you than plastic surgery. Anyway I am off the point, this is the time of year when all the produce is nearly harvested and you begin tidying up and also to dig over the ground (spade in and turn soil over). You leave it rough like that until spring – you want the frost to get right into the soil to ensure the cold kills the bugs. Mr Beardmore is adding cow manure this year, (just sprinkle it over the dug ground, well sprinkle is

maybe not the best word) he advised that he adds cow manure every other year so that it will be drawn into the ground by the worms, this ensures next spring the soil will be rich and light. There is some planting going on and he has set spring cabbage and purple sprouting while his colleague, who didn’t want to be named, will be planting out his onion sets. Then most of the month is about using the hoe to get rid of weeds, the rain, (when it comes, Mr Weatherman), ensures the weeds grow like mad and trust me you want them gone. Some people put old carpet down over an area to stop the light getting to the ground, which stops weed growth. This time of year for me is about sun flowers, I was lucky enough to be given some seeds in February by a lovely man who I chat to while walking the dogs, he grows huge sunflowers, he advised me to start them off in pots and then put them into the ground with a cane so they can be tied to it once they grow. I started mine off late in March, but they have not disappointed me, I sowed 12 seeds, but only 6 came up, (think the mice got some of them), and planted them in the ground in May, again a bit late, but they are standing tall and although not a
large as I thought they would be, they are stunning and make me smile every time I see them. A couple of tips though, they love the sun, so my neighbour advised me that I really should have put them at the end of the garden where the sun would have been on them all day and that would have increased their height, next year I will do this, and also if you do have a day to watch them, you will notice that the flower turns and follows the sun, nature is amazing…….. At this time of year, once the flowers have started to turn brown, just cut the heads off and put it in your shed or a dry place in your home and the head will dry naturally and next year you can used the seeds within the flowers to grow some more. Finally, another gardeners myth that I didn’t know the answer too, ‘what is the difference between a garden centre and a nursery?’ apparently garden centres mostly buy in their plants to then sell on, whereas nurseries grow all of their own plants on site, which seems to mean they are cheaper plants, I paid £2.90 at a nursery for a wonderful Chinese Rhubarb (Rheum) which I put by my pond to give some shade and yet at a garden centre I saw them for £8.99, this is my credit crunch tip to you all.

Uttoxeter’s largest fire? These pictures were taken in c.1970 by my friend Mr. Roger Frost and have previously been un-published. They show the massive fire at Elkes Biscuit Factory, Cheadle Road, Uttoxeter (now Fox’s Biscuits). The building on fire is their paper and board store which was believed to have been caused from a discarded cigarette end. The fire was fought by brigades from all over the county and beyond. It blazed from mid afternoon well into the night and was eventually taken under control to save further destruction to the main factory. I witnessed this fire from Elkes Football Pitch where the local police were in crowd control to keep people away from the exploding building and the sections of asbestos roof which was raining down in the surrounding area. The extent of the damage can be seen today if you walk along the Cockstables path from Heathfield Road end and view the new buildings at the start, bordering the path, which replaced the ones destroyed.

Magisterial Memories By John Glandfield Uttoxeter’s Most Charismatic Solicitor like the tale, reverting to a time when many of our Judges were often far from being “men of the world” and quite often and generally unlike those on the Bench today, of the Judge who was deaf and so, to avoid embarrassment in Court, was discreetly “wired for sound”. At the end of singularly vitriolic attack on the Defendant in conjunction with an earnest plea that the full vigour of the Law should be visited upon him when it came to the Sentence the Prosecutor was totally non-plussed to learn that the Judge had heard not one word of what had been said. It later transpired that the Defence had, prior to and anticipating the tirade, surreptitiously, “cut the wires”. Staying in the same era there was a notoriously short-tempered and forthright (some might say “verbally offensive”) High Court Judge who was about as far removed from being “user friendly” as you could get and who was once hearing a driving case involving a client of mine. Granted our Barrister at the time had a less than precise knowledge of which vehicle was where and going in what direction which quickly brought him into conflict with His Lordship who patently and most forcefully had formed a totally contrary view of

matters in hand. Whether out of pure frustration and what he saw as persistent and unwarranted interference from the Bench or pure loss of temper I shall never know, but said Barrister suddenly threw down his papers, thumped the desk in front of him and exclaimed to the Judge, “Now look here, Mate|”. Not the best way to progress in the Legal Profession! Many years ago I was acting in a case concerning, had it come off, an attempt at a very large and complicated fraud on a Bookmaker. When explaining how, allegedly, my Client had sought to effect the crime the Judge who was a well known devotee of “The Sport of Kings” persistently interrupted the Prosecutor with, “Now just run that past me again”. At the time many in Court were left wondering as to the true motive behind this apparent unaccustomed attention to detail given that said Judge was normally regarded as making mental note of, “Guilty”, before giving the illusion of proceeding to hear a Case. Not long after he had been appointed I appeared before what we used to call a Stipendiary Magistrate (a full time paid Professional Lawyer) who wan noted for being very “down to earth”. My
case involved my Client, estranged from his Wife, being accused of Harrassment. Whilst I would not seek to minimise the distress that such actions can often cause folk, the wife in this particular case was of a most robust disposition and would probably have feared no one. As she began to give her evidence it soon became apparent that to ensure a “a knock out” via frequent references to a diary of events that she claimed to have kept, the Wife was embellishing the facts if not actually making things up. The Magistrate soon twigged and asked to see the diary. As he carefully thumbed through it he asked of the Wife, ”It says here that there was to be a partial eclipse of the moon. Surely, Madam, you are not blaming him for that?”. Being accustomed to the Court procedures it was not infrequently the case for Court Clerks and the like to operate during some of the routine portions of the proceedings on a sort of “Auto Pilot”. How often as two Defendants, Male and Female, appeared in the Dock and without looking up from his/her papers the Clerk would ask, “Now which one of you is Rachael Smith?” See you in Court, John E. Food on a Budget by Fiona Atkinson from Osmaston Preparing your winter freezer lready we seem to have had the odd day of coldness amongst days of sunshine. Is the summer nearly over? There’s no time like the present to start filling up your freezer with winter healthy goodies. Now I know we’re all for saving money but I can recommend one investment that you won’t regret which you will find so useful in the kitchen, and that’s a blender or even if the budget doesn’t stretch that far purchase a hand-held blender which starts from as little as £22:00. There are plenty on the market to suit all budgets and I can assure you you will use it continuously. Why do I need a blender I hear you ask, well have you thought about all those vegetables that you need to use up instead of going to waste? Invest some time cooking up a selection of flavour-packed individual bags of soup and pop them in the freezer for the winter? Ideal when you need a quick, warming meal. By freezing the soup in portions you can simply and quickly thaw a bag at a time overnight in the fridge for lunch the next day. You can reheat soups in the microwave – defrost, cover with cling film and cook for 3-4 minutes. For ease of storage in the freezer, ideally, put the freezer bags of soup inside plastic boxes to freeze as blocks – this makes for easy stacking. Label each soup with a name and date. Freeze up to three months – any longer and they will lose their wonderful flavor. Be a little adventurous and try some new tastes

together using fresh herbs and spices. Try leek and potato, an old favourite of buttery and savoury flavours but make sure you give the leeks a good wash as they can sometimes be a tad gritty, or how about something to boost the immune system – a chicken soup, adding finely chopped parsley, tarragon, sage or rosemary herbs together with a chopped onion and a couple of sticks of celery. You could even make it more wholesome and add chopped bacon and a handful of pasta for an all round meal. Have you got endless carrots you want to use up? Then try making a few batches of carrot soup with different variations. Try giving it a kick by adding a few spices; ground ginger, coriander seeds, white mustard seeds, curry powder, cinnamon together with some crushed garlic cloves, onions, lime juice and chicken stock and hey presto you have a really delicious and tasty soup to serve up with a big chunk of homemade wholemeal bread (try adding walnuts, poppy seeds or chopped black olives to the bread mix for an extra taste). Another favourite of mine for an earthy taste is watercress soup with lashings of milled black pepper on top – an ideal treat on a cold day after a lengthy Sunday walk and again very good for you. If you’re feeling daring, and this is one that you will either love or hate, try the sweet and sharp taste of beetroot soup, a beautifully coloured soup which can be eaten hot or cold. I use a recipe including using bramley apples, adding sour cream and a sprinkle of crumbled feta cheese for a creamy taste. Don’t forget that beetroot will stain your hands so wear rubber gloves or just slip your hands in to sandwich bags to
peel and dice the beetroot. If you are short on beetroot you can always add other root vegetables such as parsnip (which tastes devine with some fresh ginger added). Alternatively, and if you don’t have much time, have you thought of using the blender to quickly make you a healthy shake using up the abundance of fruit you have to give you a quick boost for the day. You could even make a vegetable shake adding a bit of cinnamon, ginger or nutmeg – exceptionally healthy and can you used as part of a calorie-controlled diet. So what’s left in the greenhouse that you need to use up before it goes off before picked and used? Tomatoes are ideal for making up a batch of ragu sauces for your pasta meals, or for those impromptu visitors who turn up and it makes sense to just make a quick lasagna or as part of a chilli con carne. Make the ragu in to frozen cubes and you’ll never have to again ditch a half-used jar of sauce! No need to defrost the cubes when ready to use just pop them in the pan. I guarantee that when the winter finally arrives and you start the hibernation process you will be thankful to know that you have some winter warming food ready to indulge and give you that energizing kick. Now where’s my jumper…….

Sitting supping a fine glass of Merlot in the pub following a choir practice, Mickey, one of my mates in the Churnet Valley Male Voice Choir reminded me of that slogan Export or die. That was before Maggie Thatcher and her cronies de-industrialised the nation by selling everything off, and leaving us with no industry to speak of, apart from JCB of course who are still an all British Company, and who do still export. "We are not planning to close the coal mines" Thatcher said. Arthur Scargill, the mineworkers leader, thought otherwise, and took the miners out on strike. But sadly for him he broke procedure, and the strike, having been deemed illegal by Thatcher ended in failure, Scargill was discredited and ruined, but guess what ? The mines WERE then closed and he had been right all along. Tories don't change - Cameron, or the boy David as I prefer to call him, said pre election when Labour claimed he would remove the bus passes and fuel alllowance from the pensioners if he got in "I don't know where this came from, we have absolutely no intention of removing the bus passes and fuel allowance from the pensioners" but now they are in power - it looks like we're going to lose them folks. These Con-dem policies so far will do nothing to enhance the lives of the poor or the elderly but then Tory policies never do. But then you can guarantee that when a politician says he, or she is not going to do something they definitely ARE going to do it! Still flogging everything, now they are trying to

sell Dover, it's unthinkable, selling the bastion of our Island. Why don't we just sell the Houses of Parliament and all the buffoons contained therein ? Mind you I don't think we would be able to give them away! I mentioned in the last issue of the Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice that the Churnet Valley Male Voice Choir & the Uttoxeter Town Band would be joining forces for a concert in support of the Help for Hero's charity in the next few weeks. Unfortunately due to other commitments on both sides, we have been unable to to tie up a date, so we have mutually decided to postpone it until the spring. But it will definitely take place, so watch this space. In the meantime tickets are on sale for the Churnet Valley MVC's Annual Concert, which is to be held as always in the Cheadle Mehodist Church on the 9th of October. By popular request the choir thanks to our pianist John Clarke, have been fortunate to once again obtain the services of the wonderful soprano Denise Leigh who was such a sensation last year. Tickets are priced at £6, proceeds will go to the Douglas MacMillan Home and Donna Louise Trust. On a sad note, I recently attended the funeral of an old friend, Jim Harrison. Approaching his 80th birthday, widower and proud Yorkshireman Jim, had resided in Clifton for many years but had been in poor health over recent times. A former director at JCB Jim was the first, and indeed only, President of JCB Rugby Football Club. When we formed Uttoxeter Rugby Football Club
Jim came with us , and continued as President for several years. He was also the first Life Member of the club, and I am proud to say I was the second. Jim used to pick me up from my then council house in Rocester in his Jag JCB 17 on a Saturday, and we would travel to matches arguing light heartedly about politics. Jim was a whole hearted Tory, and at that time I was a Shop Steward at the company, so we were on other sides of the fence as it were. After the game he would drop me off at home with a hearty "Same time next week!" As often as not Jim would have missed the end of the game anyway, as any injuries from either side that needed a doctor or hospital treatment, would be carted off in JCB17 to the nearest apothicary to be patched up. Jim was always a gentleman, as one would expect from a former Naval Officer, and will be sadly missed by his family of whom he was always so proud. His passing is the end of an era as far as the rugby club is concerned. Uttoxeter Rugby Football Club continue to flourish and by the time this article goes to press will be well into their new season having defeated Trentham 22 - 3 in a cup match to kick off their season having been newly promoted to Midlands 3 West North with a new look side following a number of retirements. New players have come in to replace the old guard, notably two signings from Stone at half back. Good Luck lads... TTFN Les

he magnificent Consall Hall Landscape Gardens were the backdrop to the wonderful wedding of Justin Ball and Claire Birch. The bride, daughter of Peter and Jennifer Birch of Leek, wore a strapless ivory satin dress with a sequined bodice. She chose Michelle Swann, the groom’s sister as chief bridesmaid and her sisters, Karen Vigrass and Hayley Adlam of Leek, as bridesmaids. The bridesmaids wore dresses of burnt orange. The groom, son of Clive Ball of Buxton and Mavis Davis of Leek, chose Warren Critchley and Leyland Marson, both of Leek, as best men. Claire stayed the night before her wedding day in the Coach Lodge at Consall Hall and was driven to the ceremony in a white golf buggy! Justin decided to stay at one of the best men’s homes and on the morning of the special day he and his the 2 best men were driven to Burton on Trent where they boarded a helicopter to fly to the wedding ceremony, landing in the grounds of the wedding venue. The groom is a member of Tyre-Fit Racing and his race team members had built hima custom car to race the following day at Buxton raceway. The car was covered in goodluck messages and Justin was driven to the

main building at Consall Hall. 110 guests enjoyed an emotional ceremony in the Halcyon Rooms and a live jazz band played outside as guests made their way down to the poolside terrace for photos and canapés. Superb food was ongoing throughout the day including tapas, hog roasts and handmade desserts. The catering was provided by Vanilla In All Seasons who are the contract caterers for Consall Hall Gardens. After the photographs guests were treated to guided tours of the marvellous 70acre gardens and lakes in golf buggies. The evening reception was attended by over 200 guests with entertainment in the main room provided by a disco and acoustic musicians in the marquee area. Claire commented ‘It was just a perfect day, I could not have asked for any more. The food was fantastic and we got some amazing photos taken in the gardens –I just can’t believe how fast the day went by.’ Justin said ‘We had a fantastic day right from the moment we arrived. I was amazed when the helicopter was landing in the grounds and I saw the car that my team mates had built for me to race the next day – and the gardens were absolutely breathtaking from the air.’

They proceed to wreak havoc on the meticulously planned evening but the brilliantly orchestrated mayhem is tempered by subtle insights into family relationships and class distinctions. It may be difficult to buy books for the young teenager but two titles which caught my eye recently would fit in any school bookshelf and might even be enjoyed at home. The first is a gloriously illustrated book on Greek Mythology - Greek gods and their battles and their complicated relationships. Each page contains pockets in which cards give further information on Greek life and even the alphabet – and the English equivalents – are shown. Mick’s Magical Memories By Mick Harper
Recollections of a Legend Bartley Gorman Part 4 will conclude my tales about the great Bartley Gorman with the time I witnessed at first hand how he helped to really launch the career of one of Uttoxeter’s most famous sons. It was back in the summer of 1995 and Bartley informed me that a short documentary about himself was being made for Channel 4. He added that it was going to be filmed up at his Fort Woodfield home in Wood Lane, Uttoxeter over the course of a week. He told me that only family and a few close friends would be allowed to be there while the ‘shoot’ was taking place. Bartley asked me if I would like the job of ensuring that the ‘film set’ was secure from interruptions by anyone outside of the select group that he had invited. Bartley said I would be well paid and would get free meals too! As I had a job working evenings at the time, I decided that I could fit in the extra work especially as it was only for a week. When the small film crew arrived I was immediately impressed by their young Director who seemed very efficient and had the total respect of his colleagues. Apparently the guy had already started to make his mark in the film industry but this was his biggest break to date. Little did I realise it at the time but I was witnessing a young man in action who was destined to reach the heights of his profession, namely Shane Meadows. It was fascinating watching Shane oversee operations and Bartley as the ‘star of the show’ yet again amazed me. He shadow boxed non-stop for around an hour on a hot summer day which for someone of 22 would be no mean feat let alone a 52 year old! Other long sessions with a punch bag as a target were also highly impressive and I am sure Shane realised his cameras were recording something very special. I was kept busy ‘on guard’ at the main gate

having to turn away a stream of people, some of whom were not too happy as it was usually ‘open house’ to visitors eager to snatch a new moments of Bartley’s time. At one point as I was ‘on duty’ at the gate, Bartley and everyone involved came towards me as the cameras rolled. “We are having a group photo” said Bartley “and want to make sure you are on it!” Before I really realised what I was doing Bartley handed me an axe and asked me to hold it over my shoulder. At the time I didn’t give it a thought and ‘posed’ as requested. I didn’t actually see the documentary when it was televised a few months later, as I was working but I knew I would catch up with it as friends had recorded it for me. The next day I was walking down Uttoxeter High Street and someone came up to me and called me the ‘mad axe man’. “What are you on about” I said. “I saw you on the telly last night in that programme about Bartley Gorman” he replied. “You were walking about with an axe.” “I only held it while they took a group picture” I said little realising that the cameras must have been rolling after the photo was taken and before I put the axe down. I was teased unmercifully by scores of people for months and to this day I wonder how I could have been so gullible as to allow Bartley to ‘set me up’. Only recently I went on the internet and cringed when I saw that 15 years later it is still there for the whole world to see. Over the years I have played numerous practical jokes on unsuspecting victims so I suppose I deserved my comeuppance one day. At least I can say that I ‘starred’ in a Shane Meadows’ film. There is no doubt that Shane always had the talent to make a big impact on the film industry but I am sure that he will acknowledge the fact that
making the feature about Bartley gave him a ‘leg up’ on the way. Of course as many readers will know Shane intends to make a blockbuster for the big screen about Bartley’s life. Hopefully this will start coming to fruition next year. Actor Paddy Considine is going to play the part of Bartley and although he will need to ‘beef himself up’ a bit he should be an excellent choice. He met Bartley on a number of occasions, initially when he was a photographer before his acting career took off. Paddy in fact once accompanied a reporter from a well known magazine who came to Uttoxeter to question Bartley for an article he was writing. Paddy took the photos to accompany the feature. Afterwards, along with Bartley, I took Paddy back to his home on the other side of Burton before carrying on to Derby railway station to drop the writer off. From what I have been told Considine has got Bartley’s voice and mannerisms off to a tee, which should enhance his portrayal of the ‘Legend’. I predict here and now that when the film comes out it will be a huge success, not only in the British Isles but elsewhere and especially in the United States. Bartley was often in the public eye during his eventful life but even he could never have dreamed of how famous he is likely to become after his death. How fitting that a Uttoxeter man will be directing the film about a man who made Uttoxeter his adopted home. I look forward to featuring the ‘epic’ in a future article and I am sure that I will be giving it a good ‘review’ as Shane is certain to give it everything! Large crowd expected for Barry Buxton Memorial Match By Mick Harper rganisers of the football match to celebrate the life of Lance Corporal Barry Buxton are hopeful of attracting a crowd of at least 1,500 to Oldfield Sports Ground, Uttoxeter on Sunday 3rd October. The game, which kicks off at 3 pm will be between a Uttoxeter Town Select side and Wolves All Stars. Barry’s brother, Gareth, will captain the Town side in the first half and his other brother Ashley will be the second half skipper. Also featuring for the Town will be former Uttoxeter man and ex-Blackburn Rovers defender Gary Croft. Another local ex player, Mark Sale who once played for Birmingham City, will be on show in the Select attack. Town stalwart and Assistant Manager Rob Arnold will be dusting down his boots for the side his brother Dean will manage. Jeremy Wilson the sides goalkeeping coach, hopes to display his skills if given the go ahead by player physio Stephen ‘Destiny’ Caswell who has been working hard to sort out a recent injury to the veteran former Town favourite. The rest of the squad will comprise current Town players, local friends of Barry and his family as well as Warrant Officer Scott Barratt from the Army who gas given support to Sharon and Steve Hudson since Barry’s death in Afghanistan. Wolves All Stars will be skippered by their Player Manager Mel Eves who will lead their attack. Some other notable names who may turn out are defenders Andy Thompson and Jamie Smith. Hull City Assistant Manager, Stuart Watkiss has promised to play and the resolute Darren Simkin is a regular in the All Stars line up. Midfield men such as Keith Downing, Paul Jones and Tony Dinning are in their squad as is skilful winger and now radio pundit Robbie Dennison. Ex Spurs midfielder Andy Turner and 80’s veterans Dale Rudge, Mick Matthews and Joe Jackson have also been named.

The latter played at Oldfields 8 years ago in the match to honour the long career of Tom Lomas and if he can overcome a niggling injury will definitely play and if not he will still come along as a spectator. Ex Port Vale man Shane Tudor has promised to be there and Andy de Bont could play in goal. Striking options include Don Goodman, now big in the media, as well as Jon Purdie and Neil Edwards. Former Coventry man John Williams is a regular and could be a handful for the Town with his strong front running qualities. Pete Douglas has, with his family, sponsored the game and he is the match Referee. He will be assisted by Allan Parker and Gary Capewell. Bramshall Llama man Barry Brosnan is the 4th official, match mascot is Barry Buxton’s nephew Joshua Hudson an avid 8 year old supporter of Stoke City. There will be numerous stalls on the day with plenty to keep the kids amused. There will be on site photography during the event and photos will be displayed and available for purchase within minutes. There is sure to be a huge demand as the quality is guaranteed to be superb. There will be hot dogs and burgers as well as ice cream available and Oldfields’ supremo Bernard Holly has made sure there will be plenty of liquid refreshment! One of the highlights of the day will come later in the afternoon after the game has finished when there will be a huge auction with Dave Riley doing his level best to boost funds. If you haven’t seen him in action before you are in for a treat as he is a specialist in this field. On and off the field By Alan Smith Alan Smith has enjoyed a lifetime of sport in the Cheadle and Uttoxeter areas. Here Alan delves into his memory bank to write his unique brand of humour on colourful sports and life comments with memories of past and present which we hope readers will enjoy... have recently been approached to get involved in local politics and I must say it does interest me, where I trade we have a phone company awaiting legal permission to build a 14.3 metre high mast 25 metres opposite my little butty van, Not the most healthy of working conditions you must agree! And as a result I intend to fight for more justice as regards these monstrosities being erected around private dwellings and work places. And also lots of other issues that no doubt I will be made aware of. But let’s change tack and there was something I stated in last month’s issue that perhaps Cheadle Cricket Club may have to replay their semi final against Wood Lane in the Talbot Cup. Well you wont be surprised when I say that, low and behold, a replay was ordered although Cheadle, I believe, were given permission to play the team which was deemed to have ineligible players – by the main men on the League Committee! And those men admitted I understand they did but also said they had made a mistake conveying their approval of the said team. But also added anyone can make a mistake. And what a mistake because sadly Cheadle lost the replay and Wood Lane went through to the final. The powers that be that gave Cheadle permission should not be asked to resign - they should be dismissed from their positions. How much longer do the 'little' - that word being only in their eyes –clubs continue to be beset by harsh penalties imposed. In Checkley’s case a guilty by accusation and this episode at Cheadle. Could you see the hierarchy of the league issuing the same penalties to the likes of Stone, Longton, Leek etc? I doubt it! But I can say that I am no longer involved and I’m glad I’m not because I wouldn’t allow myself to be walked over. But I suppose to take these

people on would take legal steps and that costs money. But dare I say that someone’s going to do that and then perhaps a little more fair play overall may well prevail. But on a lighter side with the cricket I was in the company of probably one of the most popular local cricketers the other day, Vince Lindo. What a player, what a man, sadly he informed me he is ill but he still maintained that he would eventually leave us of old age, and I believe him! We talked about when he first came to England and played in a West Indian Celebrity XI captained by Sir Garfield Sobers against an England team captained by Ted Dexter. And Vince tells me he was chuffed when Sobers threw him the ball to open the bowling and in strode Mervyn Kitchen and Brian Roe and a smile came on Vince’s face when he informs me he sent then back to the dressing room pretty sharply. He then said ‘And then Alan in walks Ted Dexter and I thought I had taken 2 wickets already and if I get Dexter I must have a great chance of the Man of the Match award and in those days a few quid came in handy. ‘I sent down the first ball, good length but a little wide, bang 4, second the same, same result, third ball a little over-pitched 6, Gary came over to me and said ‘That’s it Vince, let him have a few to get the crowd going!’ ‘But Alan I was bowling my heart out! At the end of the over Gary said ‘Thanks Vince’ and brought himself on and first over bowled Dexter and the next man in Jim Parks, what a truly world class player Sobers was and a friend of Vince’s. Vince recently went out to the Caribbean and visited Sir Gary and says that he still plays a round of golf every day and is still revered as a god over there. Another story I remember Vince telling me was that he was asked to go in as night watchman for
Nottinghamshire and on struggling to defend, he decided to play his own game and came off 60-odd not out and got the biggest rollicking off the committee! Another memory I have was of Vince’s pal in his first season John Steele as pro at Cheadle, came up against ourselves Blythe Colours at Cheadle and Vince had John back in the dressing room for a duck! Yes he gave us great service at Blythe, a real crowd pleaser, he loved the game and still does albeit under an umpire smock nowadays. A startling fact Vince did come up with was that he had been arrested! The story goes that he was attached by smack heads and badly beaten, he got home badly concussed and the following morning was awoken by the Police banging on his door to arrest him for a supposed knife attack! It was in fact a safety pin on a key ring which Vince always carried! A complete load of rubbish but if that did anything it really soured Vince against the Police and he has suffered as I myself have of racism. But we all in cricket know that this man is an example of good and our thoughts of him will remain the same. I have recently got together with Vince and that other fabulous character of our Blythe side those days Johnny Lockett and my old village mate Alvor Griffin at Blythe for a bit of a knees up. That other sport football has started again domestically and The Potters have had a terrible start, pointless at the time of writing this article and with injuries to Sidebe out for the season. But I believe this season will be Stoke’s most difficult, and as I write this, are beset with internal problems with the goalkeeper refusing to play. I know where he’d be if I was in charge, but with agents in their ears it’s all about money –a sad state of affairs. What with £10,000 watches for lads of 18 and gold necklaces and rings, what a load of posers. No more do they involve themselves with the people who pay their wages, the spectators, you can see that at all top pro clubs. Times have really changed. Smithy
Uttoxeter Cricket Club – Club Day
ttoxeter Cricket clubs annual ‘club day’ took place on Sunday to a roaring success. A 6-aside tournament was held during the day which involved senior players, juniors, parents and other friends of the club. 6 teams took part in the action packed event with many spectators enjoying the games and tucking into copious amounts of food and drink during the day. Despite some disappointing early morning weather the day brightened up nicely and the cricket produced

some excellent performances. The semi-finals saw Dave Whitehead’s team pitted against Tony Haye’s charges and Hayes’s side came out on top thanks to Jim Malkin who blazed Ian Bailey to all parts taking 23 of his over to win. The second semi-final saw Richard Stewart’s team take on the star studded line up of Adam Cottier’s but it was Stewart’s team who reached the final chasing down 61 thanks to Michael Skelham’s demolition of a Jon Walmsley over where he took 22 runs. The final was a keenly contested affair that saw Hayes’s team score 40 of their 5 overs despite some horrendous umpiring from Rich Griffths. Only to be knocked off in just 4 overs as Skelham finished the game with two huge sixes of Dixon giving Stewart the opportunity to lift the trophy. The games were played in great atmosphere, with plenty of gentle banter and everyone thoroughly
enjoyed themselves long onto the night. Club Chairman Dave Hunt Snr gave a closing speech where he was quick to praise the organisers and particularly the ladies who did a tremendous job with the food. The ‘Utcheter’ and beyond Football Diaries from 1979 onwards... By Tim Leech, our Uttoxeter man exiled in the Potteries Congratulations to the Utcheter Egg Chucker's ell, Uttoxeter Rugby Club did brilliant last season and hopefully will carry their success on in to the forthcoming campaign. A great achievement and well done to everyone concerned, a pity the footballers of the Town, young and old alike don’t follow the Rugby clubs example in their excellent structure of developing young talent. Now we all know that Egg Chucker's are frustrated footballers but don’t have the foot and eye co-ordination and Football is a far superior game in skill. Only kidding ‘cause they have some big ‘uns amongst the team. I do admire the discipline that all rugby players show to the referee and the officials, footballers are wimps and whingers in comparison but the Egg Chucker's have done some despicable things on the pitch; Bloodgate, Eye Gauging, Head butting, spear tackles , Gareth Thomas and his handbag etc. Even so I think football at all levels has a great deal to learn from the ‘gentlemen's sport’. The only Rugby related story I have is as a young lad, like most Utcheter and Cheadle folk I worked at Alton Towers. What a site in my yellow trousers and green blazer and tie. I made many friends

there and one particular night myself John Hicton, from Denstone, a big strong guy, whose family had been part of the Sheen Tug of War Team that had won everything and Pete Newton Taylor, also from Denstone had been to the Highwayman at Threapwood on a Saturday night. Pete was the elder brother of Jamie Newton Taylor with whom I had gone to school with and played in the same school team, ‘Jim’(Jamie) was also big powerful centre forward for Uttoxeter Town until old age caught up with him. Anyway back to myself, Hiccup and Pete leaving the ‘Wayman, Pete was driving and had just had a brand new car. From memory I think it was either a Rover or MG and was proud of his new set of wheels, even if me and Hiccup had become fed up with hearing Pete tell every person in the ‘Wayman that he had just “‘purchased a new car, furry dice and all, a real passion wagon”. Well on the way home somewhere between Alton and Denstone, this being a very twisty and turning stretch of road, Pete came swiftly behind an estate car with 4 occupants and as Pete went to overtake the estate car swerved into the centre of the road and prevented Pete from overtaking. Well this happened several times with Pete becoming more and more irate, a - because there was a danger his new prize and joy becoming
Cheadle Running Club Veterans’ Cross Country headle Running Club, sponsored by D.Fower Transport Ltd. and Weaver Fencing Ltd., held their annual Veterans’ Invitation Cross Country at the Davies/Worthington Sports Ground, Oakamoor last week. The event was run over a new course and for the first time held on a Wednesday evening and proved to be the most successful in the nineteen years that it has been staged, attracting more runners and more teams than before. It further proved to be a successful night for the host club with the ladies team regaining the team trophy. First lady runner home for the second year running was Kerry Marchant of Staffordshire Moorlands A.C., who won in a time of 27.13. After a strong run over the second half of the race last year’s runner-up Sharleen Gibson of Cheadle, again finished in second place in 27.25. Ruth Watchorn-Rice, also of Cheadle, who won the individual competition in 2006, came home third in 27.41. With Sally Kenny 6th in a time of 30.09 it meant that Cheadle had their 3 counters in the first 6 runners and so regained the team trophy. The club has now won the trophy for 4 of the last 5 years. Derek Fower presented the Elsie Fower Memorial Trophy to the winning Cheadle team. The men’s race was won by Eddie Whittaker of Uttoxeter R.R., who completed the course in a time of 36.50. Second was Mark Neeld of Stone M.M. in 37.08, with Staffordshire Moorlands runners Dave Allen third in 37.16 and Andy Wilton fourth in 37.52. With 4 counters in the first 8 runners Staffordshire Moorlands A.C. won the team competition.

damaged and b - he could not overtake due to the damn right daftness of the driver in front. Pete eventually forced his way past the estate car and turned his car sideways, completely blocking the road. Quick as a flash he was out of the car and had opened up the drivers door of the offending estate car. Pete was now resembling the Incredible Hulk with every vein, muscle and sinew straining and then he did something quite unbelievable. He went to the centre of the estate car with all 4 occupants still firmly in their seats and lifted the car onto its side. Pete came back to his new pride and joy and drove off leaving the car on its side by the side of the road. Like I say don't mess with the Egg Chucker's. Any way I will finish with my usual bad joke. Did you hear about the guy from Cheadle who used to work on the Corkscrew at Alton Towers and arrived for work late one day and was promptly sacked on the spot. Well the offended guy was rightly not happy about this because it was the first occasion this had happened. He sought legal advice from his brief who advised him he had a very good case for Fun Fair dismissal. Happy Days Regards Roachy
