notes of interest Hello All – I hope you have enjoyed your summer and had some time to relax with your families. Summer is a busy time for everyone on the Bishop Gorman campus - between summer enrichment classes, youth camps and construction - the time flew by. In July, we had a group of over 20 alumni football players on the field to take on the varsity team in the second Annual Alumni Football Game. Players and spectators were treated to a sneak peek of the new Fertitta Athletic Training Center (ATC) after the game. As the newest addition to our campus, the ATC gives us the much needed space for our athletes to train, as well as an upstairs event space that will help us build community and host events such as the return of post-game socials for our alumni and families! Visit our website www.bishopgorman.org to find out about all the events and activities at the ATC. On Friday, August 17th, I’d like to invite you and your family to watch the 2012 Varsity Football team in an intrasquad scrimmage on campus, followed by a BBQ and the official open house of the ATC. It’s a fun way for us to kick off our 59th school year and I encourage all of our alumni and friends to come out and visit. If you have never been on campus, it’s a great chance for you to see first-hand all the exciting things happening at Bishop Gorman High School. When alumni and friends of the community have the opportunity to come on campus their reactions are often similar. There is a sense of pride to be associated with Bishop Gorman and a desire to continue to be a part of the legacy that is Bishop Gorman. Our tradition and strive for excellence is evident in our students and our facilities. I hope you will come and experience it for yourself. Each fall we begin the school year with excitement and anticipation, and each year our community continues to exceed our expectations. Thank you for your continued support and commitment to Catholic education….it makes me proud to be a Gael!

SERVING THE COMMUNITY
The St. Therese Retreat Center It was real hot that day and quite the travel from home for most our attendees, but it was a huge success, and we are glad we did it! Over 100 students and their family members joined the St. Therese Retreat Center to beautify the outdoors of this newly adopted retreat house on April 28th for the Spring 2012 Alumni Service Day. Palm trees, shrubs, dirt and rock transformed this once vacant lot to a serene place for the clients of the retreat center. Fr. Joseph, Director of the St. Therese Center was amazed by the amount of hard work and time

Gorman Goes Global
“We spent two weeks in Botswana, Africa on safari in April. We were out in the bush and stayed in camps in the Okavango Delta. We walked with elephants, watched hippos sunbathe and held our breath following lions stalk their prey. It was really special because my dad, Mike Morrissey ‘65 actually lived in Botswana for a year after he graduated college. When we were kids he used to tell us bedtime stories about his adventures in Africa. Although I question the truth to some of his brave encounters with the wildlife, it was amazing to see the places he told us so much about. It was more spectacular than any of us could have imagined” - Erin Morrissey '07 & Megan Morrissey '02 Wear Gorman Gear on your next BIG trip and we'll feature you!

This year’s Annual Wine Tasting event, Passport, was all about Southern Hospitality. And let us tell y’all, the party started off right with a live performance from two of our students, Davey Martinez ’13 and Ralph Mendez '14. Our beautiful emcee, Monique Hafen ’06, whose roots hail back to Louisiana and Cajun cookin’, charmed the nearly 500 guests with her southern flare. Among our group of performers was the Shapiro Project, who played Jazz while attendees sipped on all the best that Wirtz Beverage provided. Over twenty wines and ten beers were served alongside some specialty cocktails, like the Hospitali-tea and Hello Satchmo. The M Resort provided an undeniably perfect venue by the pool for this event and lip-smacking food that made a big impression! New this year was the "text-in" silent auction. Guests texted in their bids for nearly 70 amazing auction items! The best part? Anyone could bid on auction items, whether you were enjoying wine across the venue, or unable to attend the event! We could not have done it without our gracious performers, sponsors, volunteers and you! Special thanks to Monique Hafen ‘06, M Resort, Wirtz Beverage, Chartwells, Kelly Technologies, Crestron, Ellis Island and the Review Journal! Thanks y’all, stay tuned to see where Passport 2013 takes us next!

alumni spotlight
seven questions with
Jillian Bell '02 writer . actress . gorman gael
Jillian graduated from Bishop Gorman in 2002. As a student she was active all over campus, but especially shined in the theater world.Today she has written for many films and TV series, including Saturday Night Live, as well as acted in a variety of productions, like Curb Your Enthusiasm and Franklin & Bash. She has many talents, and plenty of humor to go around, check out what Jillian had to say when we asked her for an interview...
Q: So your ten year reunion is coming up, looking back, what were you like in high school? Just as funny as you are now? I feel like I was someone who socialized with a lot of different groups. Our class was pretty special, I never felt like there were cliques. I was definitely into the theater program. Also, I'm not sure if anyone would remember this but I was always weirdly attractive. Like really, really pretty. Q: What was your favorite part/teacher at Gorman? Why? I loved Improv Fridays. Every Friday in theater class we would play improvisation games for the entire period. I just remember trying to convince Ms.Talley that everyday was Friday.
Q:You were voted “most likely to become famous” your senior year… Did you know you were destined for fame? Always thought it would be in comedy? I've always wanted to make people laugh and I feel very lucky that I get to do that for a living. But to be honest, I'm still pretty upset about not getting "Coolest Hair". Q: What significant events led to your career in writing/television? As soon as I moved to L.A. I started taking classes at The Groundlings. They taught so much about sketch comedy and improv.Without that theater I probably wouldn't be where I am now. It was there where SNL came to scout and offered me a job as a writer. Q: What advice would you give to an aspiring writer/comedian/actor? Work at it everyday. Know that it's not an easy road but in the end it's worth it to be doing something you love.
• • • • • • • • • •
Q: What has been the best project you’ve worked on so far? I got to be in a Paul Thomas Anderson movie (The Master) and he's my favorite director. Everyday I got to watch actors like Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix do what they do best. I just studied their every move.
Word Play
Movie? Clue Comedian? Will Ferrell If I wasn’t a writer/actress now I'd be: A jazz singer. But a really bad one 10 year reunion? I can't believe it's been 10 years!!!! Life motto? "Make em laugh." It's cheesy, but I love this song in Singin' in the Rain and it's my daily mantra. Food? Mexican Prom? James Wicks-Stephens'02. Best Prom date ever. Oh and I prank called our limo driver that night. Cocktail? Jameson and Ginger Embarrassing habit? I kiss my dog too much. Something you don’t know about me: I taught Mr. Goode how to do cartwheels. ....Ok, that's not true.
Q: What would you consider the moment that you realized you’ve made a name for yourself in the comedy world? I don't know that I've made a name for myself yet, but I have enjoyed every step of this weird journey. I love comedy. There's nothing like it. And each job I've been lucky enough to get, I really take it in and am extremely thankful. Although, I will NEVER be thankful for not getting "Coolest Hair."
Jillian, as Jillian Belk the office manager and boss' assistant on Comedy Central's Workaholics.
Taking on 11 Acres There is a lot happening on this campus when it comes to the expansion, but builder Chi Chi Bengochea '80, Gorman alum and owner of Bentar Development, has an update on the future of this construction site. On June 4th, we broke ground on 11 acres of land that makes up part of the north phase of the expansion. The dirt was graded and prepped for foundation prior to any other work on the construction site. The first priority was to relocate the employee parking lot. Nearly 140 spaces were ripped up to make room for new buildings. Storm drains, sewer and utility lines were then relocated to fit within the systems of the new building. The employee parking spaces were then moved near the site of the future lit practice field. Also added are 165 student parking spaces. Next came the prep work for the expansion of the Tiberti Commons. Dust walls have been added near the opening so that normal school operation can take place in August. This 14,000 square foot addition to the Commons will accommodate 750 students during lunch. Scheduled completion of the Commons expansion is spring 2013. In addition to the Commons, over 7,700 square feet of lecture hall space will be added. Much like the current lecture hall, these rooms will provide a college type atmosphere for students in the classroom. The classroom building will consist of ten traditional classrooms,
campus update
expansion
two science labs, and two computer labs. A quadrangle, or central space on campus will be constructed with the classrooms. Concrete for the retaining wall around the practice field has been poured. Resurfacing and staining will take place soon after. Overall, with this north expansion, we are adding over 50,000 square feet of building space. The goal of this project is to keep the construction process as smooth of a transition for the students and staff as possible. These additions will provide us with the necessary space we need to accommodate 1,500 students while providing more gathering areas for the entire student body to use. The practice field will give the student athletes more space to perfect their game and the academic buildings will provide more opportunities for the students in the classrooms. July marked the completion of the Fertitta Athletic Training Center. We hope everyone will come out Friday, August 17th for the ATC Open House, which will kick-off with a varsity football scrimmage, followed by a BBQ and tours of the facility. Hope to see you there!

A gorman cheer legacy
The Marano Girls
For nearly 16 years, Karen Marano, mother of Marisa, Stacie, Lisa, and Geena, has attended every football game, basketball game, cheer camp and competition to watch her girls perform, support, and cheer on the Gorman community. With Geena's graduation this June, the Marano legacy of Gorman Cheer has come to a close. There have been many families with 2 or even 3 girls who cheered throughout their time at BG, but never 4 sisters! In a heartfelt letter of memories to the Gazette, about her time as a Gorman Cheer Mom, Karen said "We all had history together, stories to laugh about , memories of lots of good times watching our children grow into adults. That’s the true family and community spirit of Gorman". While a legacy might have paused for the Marano family,, and the girls have grown up, gone to college and are continuing into their adult lives, as we always say "Once a Gael - Always a Gael", and we'll always have great memories to share! Pictured: Lisa '04, Geena '12, Stacie '02, Marisa'00, & the four girls at Geena's graduation this June 2012.
