Welcome to the 34th Bienal The starting point for the curatorial project of the 34th Bienal de São Paulo – Though it’s dark, still I sing was the desire to unfold the show in both space and time, extending its duration along several months and expanding the presence of the participant artists through a partnership with more than twenty cultural institutions in the city. Officially inaugurated on February, 2020, the Bienal spread over one more year due to the scenario imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, became public in many ways along the latest months and now reaches its moment of highest intensity.
On the three floors of the Bienal Pavilion you will find works by more than 90 artists, many of them commissioned especially for this exhibition, which is complemented by several activities of public program, a series of editorial and audiovisual products, as well as a mediation program conceived for the most diverse audiences. ACTIVATION OF THE WORK DEPOSIÇÃO [DEPOSITION]
Thu, 7:00 pm; Sat, 4:00 pm
Visitors are free to interact with deposição, by Daniel de Paula, Marissa Lee Benedict and David Rueter, located at the center of the Bienal Pavilion: an old Chicago stock exchange “trading pit” that is re-signified by the artists and by its use at the Bienal.
The activation of the work also includes three weekly activities: discussions proposed by artists Vânia Medeiros and Beatriz Cruz; experimental music presentations co-produced by Bienal and Teatro Cultura Artística and curated by Festival Novas Frequências; and open discussions from the series “As Vozes dos Artistas” [The Artists’ Voices].
PERFORMANCES The participation of Eleonora Fabião, Mette Edvardsen, Nina Beier, Paulo Nazareth, Roger Bernat and Trajal Harrell includes performances and activations throughout the exhibition period. Follow the event schedule at 34.bienal.org.br/en/agenda and participate.
These activities take place on Thursdays at 7 pm and Saturdays at 4 pm, as well as at other times, updated on the complete event program available at 34.bienal.org.br/en/agenda.
ART CIRCLES
Thu. & Sat. at 4:00 pm Inspired by the principles of autonomy, horizontality and dialogicality proposed by Paulo Freire, the Art Circles are conversations with the public that aim at the shared construction of meanings about the exhibited works and the possible relationships between them. Thirteen art circles will be held around statements that organize the exhibition. The activity takes place on Thursdays and Saturdays, at 4:00 pm, with a capacity for 10 participants. The meeting point is in the Mediation Room on the ground floor. We hope to see you there!
The Bienal in Audio Inclusive audio guide of the 34th Bienal (Portuguese only) Narrated by Marília Gabriela, Adriana Couto, Sara Bentes and André Trigueiro, the inclusive audio guide for the 34th Bienal covers 20 artworks and objects that make up the exhibition. By following the suggested route – starting on the ground floor with the objects from the National Museum, all the way to the end of the third floor with Two Choirs, by Ana Adamović – you will be guided through every floor of the pavilion. Each of the tracks shares stories related to the works, comments on the artists’ processes and describes the pieces. Since it is an inclusive audio guide, it is also available in Brazilian Sign Language (Libras).

Podcast Bienal, 70 anos (Portuguese only) In 2021, Bienal de São Paulo celebrates 70 years since its first edition (1951). To commemorate the occasion, the Bienal has created a podcast in partnership with UOL that interweaves the stories of the Bienals and the cultural and social context of each decade. Narrated by Marina Person, the podcast features interviews with artists, curators and researchers from different areas to help bring together, through the different Bienal editions, a little of the history of the last seven decades. The podcast Bienal, 70 anos was awarded by ProAC LAB and is presented by the Ministry of Tourism, the Special Secretariat for Culture and the Government of the State of São Paulo, through the Secretariat for Culture and Creative Economy.
The project is a joint venture between Fundação Bienal São Paulo and Goethe-Institut, with accessibility consultancy by Mais Diferenças; sound design and soundtrack by Fernando Cespedes; and distribution by Musea.
Guided Visits In our guided visits, a Bienal professional walks visitors through the exhibition in an exchange of knowledge and impressions based on the exhibited works. Guided visits can be scheduled ahead of time for groups but are also available on a walk-in basis at specific times during the day; in addition, visitors are free to talk directly to mediators in the Mediation Rooms. Unscheduled Visits We offer guided visits on a walk-in basis at specific times throughout the day for those who come to the 34th Bienal. Anyone can participate, as long as there is availability, as groups have a maximum number of participants. Look for the Mediation Room on the ground floor, near the exhibition entrance, to find out more. Thematic Visits The mediation team is made up of dozens of professionals with diverse backgrounds and repertoires.
