Colormix Forecast 2022

LAURIE CLARK Sherwin-Williams®

On October 21, 2021, our Chapter meeting was held at and sponsored by Alyshaan Fine Rugs, with a presentation by Laurie Clark of Sherwin-Williams® on the Colormix™ forecast for 2022. The presentation was fun, informative, and the color trends gorgeous. J.C. Abbey from Bluestar expanded on the many ways you can customize their appliances, even using the Colormix forecasted colors. It will be exciting to see your rug designs using Inky Blue and Peace Yellow!

Jennifer Biffer, ASID, this year’s President, presented the new Arizona North Chapter Board of Directors: Kelly Dunlop, Allied ASIDPresident-Elect & Industry Partner; Leann Fernald, Industry Partner Representative-At Large Director & Industry Partner Liaison; Alisha Taylor, Allied ASID-Finance Director, Christine Rhodes, Industry Partner Representative-Membership Director; Teri Smithers, ASIDProfessional Development Director, and Brooke Browning, Student ASID-Student Representative.

Post presentation, Arizona Appliance and Home opened their showroom and hosted cocktails and hors d’oeurves. With 235 guests in attendance, it was a stunning success for all. Many thanks to Alyshaan Fine Rugs, Arizona Appliance and Home, Bluestar, and Laurie Clark. The

DEC

On December 4th, 2021, we celebrated the end of the year by dancing the night away at Schmooze, in Old Town Scottsdale. The food was fabulous, the libations even better, but the best part was the gathering of friends to celebrate in person. It was wonderful to see so many in attendance, with some new faces in the crowd. Mr. P Body, the DJ, kept the crowd moving with his great mix of dance tunes, and a few lucky winners took home some great raffle prizes. Kelly Dunlop, Allied ASID, President-Elect & Industry Partner, manned the check-in station so she could greet each guest. Tony Hamati, owner and chef of Schmooze and Jennifer Biffer, ASID, President worked closely together to make sure the dinner menu was perfect, and the drinks kept flowing. This annual event is the Board of Directors' way of saying thank you to our membership. Wishing you all a fabulous 2022 and look forward to celebrating again in person this year.

Holiday Designer Show House

Showing off design talent wasn’t the only thing on the agenda for the one-day Holiday Designer Show House, and, according to guests in attendance, the entire day made it to Santa’s nice list.

The experience began when guests were delivered to the front of the grand entrance of our very decked halls. Two towering nutcrackers and champagne greeted all as they entered a magical courtyard. We can’t tell you how delighted we were to see so many in attendance. It’s always a joy to see our members getting value out of their ASID membership and mixing with interior design lovers from all over the Valley.

And to their wondering eyes did reveal a holiday marvel draped, tucked, and stacked magically appeared. On!

To the top of the porch! And down the hall! They decorated it all! The well-dressed estate all made possible by many hands behind the scenes and the generosity of homeowners, Mr. and Mrs. Levin, who with a nod, generously opened their 20,000-sf private residence.

From out on the three-acre estate there arose such a clatter with an array of refreshments from coffee barista, sparkling wines, and signature cocktails from ROXX Vodka! To the fabulous Dickens Quartet of carolers and little old driver, so lively and quick, known as jolly St. Nick, guests were amazed!

And then in a twinkling, when you thought it done, the bus arrived for more fun! As a VIP party of fifty came with a bound. Dressed in their finery from head to foot, they clinked, noshed, and chatted to late in the night, on tables bedecked by Gretchen Palmer , Allied ASID and Past President, PHG Consulting & Design, Dana Reynolds Skogen , Interior Spaces, and Shawna Reed , Chapter Administrator, Your Event Florist. To their delight, Heidi Dwigun , Senior Manager, Marketing & Outreach, and Robin Pearson , Executive Director, Voices for CASA Children, with twinkling eyes gladly shared the mission of Voices along with auctioneer, Kelee Lee Walton !

You can only imagine the dimples how merry when we learned the tally raised approximately $13,000 for the

behind the scenes to make this event happen. In the end, the goodwill and recognition in the community stretched farther than we hoped and higher than imagined.

It takes more than the Dickens village to create something fabulous and that village extends to all our membership. We invite you to join incoming President Kelly Dunlop , Allied ASID in expanding on this event in 2022. And with that, to all a good night.

Donuts and Dialogue

Live on Instagram! Donuts & Dialogue in November 2021 was our very first ASID event to be live on Instagram. Pella Window & Door hosted 25 attendees in their beautifully appointed Scottsdale showroom. This highly informative and equally enjoyable social media presentation by Miranda Gwilliam and her team, revealed the social media tools used most successfully by Rug Worx in their daily business. With an impressive 680 thousand followers across the social media channels and 49 million views of their most viewed video, Miranda discussed the importance of understanding the various platforms and defining your goals for your brand. Miranda’s most ardent advice: “having a strategy and knowing your end goals are key to social media success.”

Start with the 5 Ws:

• Who? Define and understand your target audience

• What? Identify your product/service

• When? Post regularly and consistently (Stories, Reels, Lives)

• Where? Decide on your platform (eg: Instagram)

• Why? Know your motivation and targeted results

Know your end goal(s). There are many reasons to use social media, for example:

• Show your expertise

• Education

• Increase number of followers

• Create referral sources

• Find new customers

Use tools available:

• Edit with InShot app

• Use music from TikTok & IG

• Hashtags from Flick.tech

• Micro influencers

• Facebook Private Groups

• IG Reels

• Pinterest

• Going live

While the presentation was fast paced with a lot of information to digest, Miranda and her team made it fun and exciting. They had all of us liking, following, sharing and considering our next content rich post before we said our goodbyes.

Take advantage of social media tools & make them your own:

• Change up what you are posting

• Be relatable so your audience can connect with you and not just your brand

• Make content interesting and fun (e.g.: include what happens between Before & After photos)

• Use hashtags that work with your brand

• Use your phone to film videos

• Recycle old content (change hashtags & repost)

For your projects that deserve nothing less than extraordinary, choose the contemporary style of Pella Reserve. Our simple and sophisticated designs embody the tenets of pure, contemporary style and feature expansive glass, sleek, minimal profiles and through-stile construction.

Silver Linings

Happy 2022. For me, it feels like 2021 came and went very quickly and was a year where we all thought life would be getting back to normal, which was unfortunately not the case. I am very excited to be moving on to a fresh new year and a fresh start. It’s so easy to get caught up in the stresses of work and life that we forget to simply pause and appreciate the new beginnings.

I always like to look for silver linings, and while we can look back at 2021 and feel the weight that it put on our collective shoulders, it’s also important to look back at how it might have transformed us for the better. The past couple years have shown us just how quickly we’re able to adapt and grow. Whether it’s new business strategy, new priorities, or an entirely new enterprise, the pandemic has shined light on many positives that many of us were not anticipating and created opportunity for those of us willing to embrace those changes.

At Modern Luxury, we looked at the exploding real estate market and saw that there was an opportunity to serve the people of the East Valley the way we had been with Scottsdale, so we launched Modern Luxury East Valley. This new publication, born from the pandemic, has been embraced by the readers and I can confidently say that we probably wouldn’t have jumped on the opportunity as quickly if it wasn’t for the pandemic.

We wrapped up 2021 on a high note. The Holiday Show House in Paradise Valley, which took decking the halls to new heights, was gorgeous and a huge success. Modern Luxury and ASID partnered together and raised $20K for CASA, a non-profit that supports specially trained community volunteers appointed by Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Judges to speak in the best interest of children who are brought before the court for reasons of abuse or neglect. A huge thank you to the homeowners for giving us full access to their incredible property.

I hope that 2022 brings you much happiness and success and that when the year comes to a close, you find your silver linings among whatever hardships you might encounter. Who knows, it might become your best year yet!

RUG WORX

KOHLER RUG WORX

ast year’s Industry Partner of the Year, Rug Worx, is owned and operated by the dynamic duo of Scott and Miranda Gwilliam. Scott’s passion for area rugs, fine fibers and cleaning has made their rug cleaning business a unique partner for our local design community. He prides himself on being the last line of defense and says “I’m often the one they call when no one else can solve the issue. I’m usually referred by their flooring sales rep, designer or even another carpet/rug cleaner. I work on rugs regularly that have already been professionally cleaned and perhaps something went wrong. I set realistic expectations and educate them on their rug throughout the process.” Scott prides himself on rug and fiber education for himself, his staff, designers, customers, and even other cleaners in his Textile Pro or Master Rug Cleaner networks. Rug Worx now carries a full line of Fiber Protector products which they recommend having applied on most rugs, furniture, and fabrics prior to use so they can prevent potential damage and gain the best cleaning results in the future. They have four products which include a Green Seal approved protector and a brand-new product specifically designed for use on rayon/viscose or plant fibers. Miranda says “we’ve seen the trends with furniture specifically move to lighter colors and more delicate fibers such as linen and chenille. We’ve also seen a lot of sofas made of poly blended with rayon which can be tricky to clean. Scott and I feel a strong pull to try to get to these pieces to apply protector before they are installed or right after. Especially if they were custom designed.” To see their viral rug washing videos, you can connect with them on Instagram or TikTok.

The Agility of DESIGN

Resilience and Innovation As We Adapt to the “New Normal”

As the Covid-19 pandemic reaches the two-year mark and threatens to continue indefinitely, the talk of returning to normal and nostalgia for the before times seems to be just as monotonous as the reporting on the pandemic itself. As it becomes more apparent that Covid will be a virus that we learn to live with and not one that will disappear one day, we can take this opportunity as designers to look at how this moment in time has changed and elevated interior design rather than biding our time until we can return to the status quo.

Many of us have heard the stories of how Florence Nightingale advocated for improved sanitation and ventilation in military field hospitals in the 1850s which led to decreased mortality due to exposure to secondary infections. Her statistical analyses of causes of death and the changes made based on this data can be traced to the modern field of Evidence-Based Design that informs current trends in healthcare design and modernized the field of nursing. Nightingale saw the tragedy before her and used it as an opportunity for innovation just as the current pandemic can provide us with a source of inspiration.

Some of the change stemming from our current situation is based on necessity and forcing us to revise long-held business practices. Just in time manufacturing has been the go-to model for American companies since Toyota adopted the system in the 1970s. This approach has allowed companies to work efficiently and economically while meeting the needs of their customers for many years. But as the supply chain disruptions caused by the pandemic and its associated effects have upended the ability to receive supplies in a timely fashion, they have had to reevaluate the benefits of just in time and adjust their business models. For designers this has led to the need for creative thinking in how and when they order items for their customers and where they order these items from. Some have turned to local manufacturers who once could

continued on page 20

19 l DESERT DESIGN winter 2022
Many interior design specialties are leading the way into the future

continued from page 19

not compete with larger companies but have now become lifelines as a way to acquire goods quickly. Others have begun to look at resale and consignment shops not just as an affordable and green alternative but as a guaranteed way to meet client needs in a timely manner.

Global supply chain disruptions have also resulted in increased material costs which has caused designers and contractors to adjust and seek out alternative and reclaimed materials. This has not only been a source of innovation but also a move to more sustainable and local materials. The long-term benefits of these changes exist beyond the pandemic environment leading to smaller ecological footprints and revived local economies.

As designers we have the option to fight to maintain the status quo or to use this moment in history as a catalyst for positive change and revolution. Many interior design specialties are leading the way into the future including design education and healthcare designers. These two perspectives are just the beginning and hopefully inspire and remind us why continuing education has always been important to interior design and how it will become increasingly important moving forward in a rapidly changing global economy.

Educating for a pandemic generation and beyond

If the pandemic has taught students and educators anything, it is that we can pivot on a dime. There were some hiccups during that first semester of quarantine when two weeks morphed into the remainder of the semester, no one knew what to expect next, but come fall of 2020, we were up to speed on our new technology resources and poised to teach and learn completely remotely. Thanks to the bevy of resources and training provided by the Center of Teaching and Learning at Scottsdale Community College, even the least tech-savvy instructor was now an online teaching savant.

COVID-19 forced us to quickly confront some inevitable changes coming to higher education, and we have learned a lot about the benefits and challenges of distance learning. Faced with temporarily moving all of our courses online, we had to be strategic about how this would work best for interior design studios. Faculty delivered supplies and material samples to students (thanks in large part to Facings of America). Studio courses employed an entirely new class modality - live online learning - where we hoped to bridge the gap between in-person and asynchronous online experiences. We identified the classes (or even parts of classes) that worked well virtually, as well as those that do not, and have responded by creating many new hybrid (a combination of in-person and online) classes. We created new technology-focused workshops to improve software skills, and the SCC Interior Design program now offers a number of faculty attended in-person open lab hours. Soon, we will provide a brand new type of course offering referred to as a “high-flex” course. High-flex courses provide students the opportunity to take a class in-person or live online, while advanced cameras and microphones record the instructor’s presentation in the classroom.

The SCC Interior Design program has been offering courses online for more than a decade. I created our first online courses (design histories) because we believed these lecture-based courses work well in this modality and can serve more students; busy learners love being able to take these courses on their own time. I enjoy teaching online, but I have to admit that I really miss sharing my love of design history with students in person. In fact, most educators prefer teaching in person. It seems counter-intuitive, but if an online class is taught well, it’s actually much more difficult to manage. There is more presentation material to prepare, and providing feedback is time-consuming. When in-person, student engagement is heightened, student-teacher relationships are cemented, and class discussions are more lively, so it’s easier for teachers to be engaged as well. Courses are offered virtually for only one reason - increased student access. Prior to the spring of 2020, there was this looming question facing educators and students of higher education. When will there be a demand that we do this all online, and how will that devalue education?

20

Our experiences during this pandemic have answered this question. We learned that we can do much more online than we ever hoped, but there are some things that need to continue in person; the best interior design program should be a blend of modalities. We offered a student poll at the end of 2020 asking students their preferred methods of taking our courses. Many answers were not surprising -they like taking history online but prefer to take fabrics in-person. Some responses prompted us to re-think how we were offering certain courses - such as our introduction course. The class was being offered as an asynchronous eight-week online course, but half of our respondents expressed the desire to have a live instructor - either in person or live online. This spring we will be teaching our second semester of a live online introductory course, where students can join me for an hour over their lunch break each week to chat about the current lesson. We also learned that handson courses like interior materials and fabrics must be mostly held in person. Students need to touch materials and visit showrooms, but we can decrease in-person class meetings by requiring some independent online work. Software courses need to be offered in dual formats; some students do well learning AutoCAD independently online, while others like to learn technology with peers in a studio environment. Most importantly we learned that learning modalities should not be all or nothing - but a blend of formats. Live classes can reduce class meetings by also requiring asynchronous online work and even some live online class meetings. With these reduced class meetings, now each studio instructor offers an open lab so online students can work in person with their instructor on campus if needed. The future of design education is not entirely online, but enjoying the technologies we grew comfortable with during this pandemic while also remembering that humans need human interaction to thrive.

In addition to modifications in course modality, the SCC Interior Design program has also made some improvements to our curriculum. Hand drafting and sketching are valuable tools, but in the growing virtual environment, electronic tools must take precedent. We have a short amount of time with our students, so we have to be strategic in what we teach. Faculty CJ Robb and Maryse Jospitre, who both have advanced technical backgrounds, have developed courses and workshops that increase student exposure to software programs such as AutoCAD, Sketchup, and the Adobe Creative Suite. They’ve also added basic computer functions like file management and workflow to our curriculum and worked with the Architectural Technology program’s leader Mike Kuzmik to rethink the curriculum of the introductory CAD courses.

COVID-19 has inspired many people to re-career, and we have seen a surge of experienced and mature students enrolling in classes. Our increased virtual class offerings have made it possible for many working professionals to join our program. These students want to become professional designers and earn their NCIDQ certification, but do not necessarily need another four-year degree. Also, the continuing demand for remodeling professionals has increased the need for designers who have knowledge of building codes, building systems, lighting, and even commercial design. To serve these students we have reintroduced a “third-year” to our program, with an additional twenty-one credit hours. We call this the Interior Design Professional certificate. We assume students taking these classes are already working in the industry, so these classes are all available either online or in the evening. In addition to current students, we invite any currently practicing Interior Designer who would like to improve their technical skills to join us for our new courses. Most of these classes are offered just once per year, so please reach out to Rachel.Simmons@ ScottsdaleCC with any questions.

Lessons in Adaptivity

As much as the COVID-19 Pandemic has upended nearly every industry none has seen the effects more acutely than healthcare. The news is a constant reminder of overflowing Emergency Rooms and ICU beds and burnt-out nursing staff. Healthcare designers are at the forefront of how to adapt medical spaces to the increased demands of the pandemic and are tasked with looking into the crystal ball and trying to determine what the future of medical spaces will hold. What lessons can residential designers take from the outcome of the crucible that COVID-19 has created for healthcare designers?

In a survey conducted by Healthcare Design the number one major goal of healthcare organizations moving forward will be to design spaces that are flexible and adaptable in the future. Through the course of the pandemic medical centers have seen spaces from hallways to waiting rooms become treatment areas and these needs have sometimes changed on a weekly or even daily basis. This same situation has been true in residential spaces. Families that were once used to being home together only for a few hours in the evening have found their living spaces turned into offices, schools, playgrounds and restaurants sometimes all at the same time. While the short-term has seen closets turned into home offices and kitchen islands used for school rooms, the future of design will need to examine how open concepts can be sub-divided into multi-purpose spaces and additional square footage considered to add utility beyond typical family functions.

As the line between residential and commercial spaces begins to blur, residential designers can take another lesson from healthcare design in sound attenuation. Healthcare designers are constantly aware of sound transmission as they are tasked with meeting the regulations of the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). This regulation requires stringent protections to avoid the purposeful or accidental transmission of personal information between clients. In residential design it is common to physically separate social and private areas of the home, but this geographic grouping may not be sufficient when guest bedrooms in the private wing of the home become offices and great rooms become schools. Future home design will require increased technical acoustic solutions to allow for peaceful cohabitation between family members using the home for multiple uses.

As the pandemic began in the winter of 2020 and it was unclear exactly how the virus spread, many individuals undertook elaborate rituals of decontamination for their mail and groceries in an attempt to keep the virus out of their house should it be carried by surfaces. As we have learned more about the transmission of the virus, surfaces have become less of a focus but the concept of maintaining a home as germ-free as possible remains. Healthcare furniture has long been designed in a way that allows for durable surfaces that can be sanitized repeatedly without damage. While fabrics such as Crypton are familiar to most designers, medical grade furniture design goes beyond just fabric type and includes design features such as fully accessibly clean outs between the chair seat and back and completely replaceable elements. These features allow not just for cleanability but also for longevity and sustainability as small updates can allow for pieces to serve their purpose for many years without needing to be completely replaced. Applying these attributes to residential furniture allows homeowners the ability to clean and maintain their furniture as well as adapt to changing tastes and lifestyles.

While we don’t have the crystal ball to see exactly what the future will bring and how that will affect our industry, we have access to the expertise and innovation from the frontline to guide and inform our processes. We can move forward with both the knowledge necessary to prepare responsibly for whatever the next challenge may be along with the hope that we may once again freely design and share spaces with friends and strangers.

Students/Emerging Professionals Kickoff Event

On October 7, 2021, 19 members came together for our Students and Emerging Professionals Kick-off event at Greenwood Brewing in downtown Phoenix. After many months of remote learning, working and socializing, this was a fun evening for our new and potential student members to mingle with our emerging professionals, seasoned designers and industry professionals in a relaxed and safe atmosphere. Monterrey Tile provided a brief presentation of their new products and had a product table set up for members to look at and ask questions. There were even a couple of raffle prizes given away. This was a fun event to kick off our 2021/2022 year and it allowed our members a much needed opportunity to network with each other, catch up with conversations and connect with friends old and new. Many thanks to those that attended, Monterrey Tile and Greenwood Brewing for providing such a great space for us to gather.

Great Connections

Over the past few months, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting students and educators within the Interior Design programs at Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, Scottsdale Community College and Phoenix College. It was great to see various projects these students had worked on during the fall semester and it makes me very excited to see what they have in store for the spring semester. I’ve had the opportunity to make many great connections and have learned what our ASID students are looking to get out of their membership. I hope to help effectively implement their wishes and act as a personal resource for every student member. It is my goal to help them be as successful as possible in their educational careers and I look forward to supporting our student members during the upcoming semester. I’m excited for the upcoming events we have planned this year and everything that is to come.

2022 Student Design Challenge

After being on hiatus for a couple of years, the Student Affairs committee has decided to bring back the Student Design Charette, but with a bit of a twist.

This year we have put together a Student Design Challenge that will run concurrent with Real World Design Week. The purpose of this design challenge is to tap into the student’s newfound abilities to take a real-life project and find a design solution based on provided parameters and program. Rather than try to do this in just a day as we have done in the past, the students will work individually and have a threeweek time frame to come up with a solution. At the end of the three weeks, they will present their design solution to a panel of judges who will then select our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.

Each student that participates in the challenge will also be able to sign up for an opportunity to shadow a designer during Real World Design Week. During that time, they can talk to that mentor about their thoughts and ideas for the design challenge and ask for feedback. This challenge is meant to mimic a real-life working situation and how you might solve a design problem. It is our hope that this design challenge will begin to give the student a taste of what they may encounter in the real world.

The Student Design Challenge will run from February 21st through March 11th with presentation and awards on the evening of March 11th. The Design Challenge is open to all student ASID members. Registration and additional information for this event is available online at azn.asid.org.

ou have finished that wonderful master bath project you’ve been working on for months and it looks great! The client is thrilled, you are proud of your design, and you want to share it.You need some photos for your project portfolio, but you don’t know the first thing about how to make that happen. Do I do it myself? Should I hire a professional photographer? How do I know they understand what I need? Can I afford it? These, and many others are the questions we ask ourselves when it comes time to do professional photos of our work.To help demystify these photography questions, join us on April 14th for a presentation by photographer, Chris Loomis, when he presents “The Power of Professional Photography”. Learn the role of storytelling in design photography, what to expect during a professional photoshoot, why styling in real life is different from styling for a photo, the importance of lighting, and tips and tricks to give an image more polish.

This event will be hosted by Costello Childs Gallery at the Scottsdale Design District. Please look for additional information on the chapter website and registration will be available in March.

Real World Design Week

Helping tomorrow’s designers learn from today’s pros

Strengthen the future of interior design by participating with ASID members as a student or a mentor. During Real World Design Week, student members shadow ASID designers and industry partners to experience a day in the life of real-world practice.

Real World Design Week is a mentoring program offering both hands-on and online learning experiences to introduce students to the real world of interior design. The goal of the program is to educate the next generation of designers and offer them exposure to professional practices and access to career development training.

Real World Design Week exists exclusively for ASID members. Throughout the event, which will be held from February 27th – March 5th ASID student members will visit ASID designers, industry partner representatives and educators to shadow them for a day.

What happens during Real World Design Week? ASID designer members and industry partner representatives host one-day or half-day shadow experiences for student members at their work location. This program provides a platform for rising student designers to connect with those working in the design industry and to potentially create a lasting relationship for both parties ASID challenges all practitioner members to become a mentor and contribute in the following ways:

• Educate students to act ethically and professionally

• Contribute to the elevation of the interior design profession

• Identify ideal candidates for internships or job placements within your company or private practice.

• Educate future industry leaders on professional practices

• Provide networking opportunities and foster mentoring relationships

• Sustain the interior design profession
