Affordable Fun The 2010 Mower County Fair opens Aug. 10 By Josh Moniz Summer fun will kick off this Tuesday at noon with opening ceremonies of the 126th Mower County Free Fair. This year’s fair will emphasize making the fair more accessible and fun for teenagers. “Usually you go to most fairs and you see the teens just strolling around, looking for something to do. We’re trying to offer more events geared towards them, like the Guitar Hero contest on Friday,” said John Mueller, president of the fair board and Austin police lieutenant. The Guitar Hero contest goes from 9 to 11:30 p.m. at Fair Square. Additionally, teen dances are available on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9 to 11:30 p.m. at the Fair Square. The fair is also emphasizing free or low cost entertainment in theme with this year’s slogan “Affordable Fun for Everyone.” The majority of the events are free, except for the Grandstand events and the rides at the carnival. However, both the Grandstand and the carnival have discount offers available throughout the week. Grandstand events cost $10 a seat, with children under 5 able to get in for free. This year, the Grand Pass is being offered, which is $36 for six Grandstand event tickets that can be used at any Grandstand events. The Grand Pass is available for purchase at Godfather’s Pizza.

Similarly, the carnival is offering Bracelets Days throughout the length of the fair. The bracelets cost $15 and can be used like unlimited carnival tickets during the specified time of the Bracelet Days. Tuesday will be Teen Night with the bracelets available to teenagers to be used from 8 p.m. to midnight. Wednesday is Kid’s Day and the bracelets can be used from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday the bracelets are available to everyone. The Saturday hours of use of 1 to 5 p.m. and the Sunday hours are 2 to 8 p.m. This year there are several new events available for fair goers to attend, as well as additions to returning events. The first new event is the cowboy mounted Shoot-out, which takes place Friday at 7 p.m. at the Horse Arena. The event involves cowboys racing past balloon targets and target shooting them with percussion rounds. Precession rounds are not live ammunition. The second event is the steer wrestling Jackpot on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Horse Arena. Participants ride alongside steers on their horses before jumping to the steer and wrestling it to the ground. Another new addition to the fair is the showing of a Blackhawk helicopter during the vehicle fair, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Fair Square.

The Mower County Fair is putting a fun spin on the Great Frontier Bull Riding competition by hosting two events that are open to the community. In addition to the sanctioned bull riding competition, the event will feature the return of the mutton busting and the wild cow milking competitions. Mutton Busting is an opportunity for children to be part of the bull riding fun. The children mount sheep and struggle to hang on while they race to the finish line. “I rode it all the way and then I fell down,” said Gracie Hilton, 6, who took second place last year. “I like doing the mutton bust and I’d do it again.” To participate in the event, kids must be pre-registered only 25 spots will be available. The wild cow milking is the adult community competition. It consists of three-person teams charged with subduing one of the wild cows let loose in the arena. The team must milk one glass of milk from the cow and transport the glass to the judges’ table without dropping it. “It’s just a fun event that adds excitement and flair to the bull riding,” said Neil Anderson, whose team took first place last year. The competition will be open up to people in the stands at the event. Besides the community options, the big event is the bull ridding competition. The bull riding is a sanctioned event for the National Federation of Bull Riding. According to Alan Cattevold, owner of Great Frontier and producer for the bull riding show, since the event is sanctioned, riders from all over the country may come to compete. The event will begin with an introduction of the cowboys, clowns and bull fighters, followed by a prayer and the singing of the National Anthem.

The show will start with bull riding, followed by mutton busting and the wild cow milking. Then, the remaining bull rides will be held, followed by the concluding ceremonies which involves announcing the winners, awarding the prize money and an autograph session afterwards. The prize

amount is dependent on the number of riders who enter, but it is estimated that $5,000 will be paid out over the top six positions. The bull riding takes place at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Grandstand arena. The cost is $10 per seat with children five and under getting in for free.

Sippin’ the fair’s finest By Rachel Drewelow Sasparilla. Orange Cream. Black Cherry. Those are just a few of the old fashioned sodas that will be peddled for the first time at the Mower County Fair this year at Doc’s Smooth Sippin’ Saloon. The brand new booth is owned and operated by Mitch Holderbach, of Stillwater, who serves up the 100-year-old recipes with an entrepreneurial spirit. “It’s been really successful so far, and I’m developing a following,” Holderbach said while working at the Freeborn County Fair earlier this week. Holderbach said he’s always wanted to start his own business, and he got the opportunity about a year ago when the economy took a toll on his sales and marketing career. Holderbach doesn’t make the sodas himself, but purchases the syrups from a vintage soda company. In addition to the flavors mentioned above, Doc’s Smooth Sippin’ Saloon serves root beer, diet root beer, and cream soda — all in 32-ounce stainless steel collector’s mugs.

Those who purchase a mug for $6 can bring it back to the saloon at any fair and have it refilled for $3. “We’ve already seen some repeat customers going from fair to fair,” Holderbach said. “It’s really gaining momentum.” Customers, Holderbach said, often voice their appreciation for the style of the saloon — complete with oldfashioned swinging saloon doors and an oak whiskey barrel tap. Holderbach said he’s enjoyed working the southern Minnesotan county fair circuit. “I enoy the people and being out and about, and it sure helps that the reception’s been great.”

Longtime 4-H’er taking on leadership role By Trisha Marczak For as long as Tyler Amick can remember, he’s been a 4-H kid. His experience began in the Cloverbud scene as a kindergarten student, when he’d spend his time tagging along with his mother, a 4-H leader. As a third grade student, he transitioned into the 4-H program, taking on projects ranging from engineering and science to horse training. Now a 14-year-old entering ninth grade, Amick has established himself as a standout in the Austin 4-H scene. “This past year, Tyler has really stepped up in his leadership,” said regional 4-H program coordinator Melissa Koch. “He’s not afraid to take on challenges, come up with good ideas and give them a try.” Amick currently serves as the vicepresident of his 4-H club, Enterprise. He’s also a member of 4-H Ambassadors, a leadership and service program. “Being a part of the advisory board and ambassador team, he has really contributed to making 4-H successful in

4

SUNDAY, AUGUST 8, 2010

Mower County,” Koch said. For the past two years, Amick’s success has taken him to state fair competitions — the ultimate goal for many 4-H’ers. Amick admits that his involvement in 4-H takes up a great deal of his time, but he wouldn’t have it any other way. “First of all, my mom is the leader. Second of all, I have a bunch of fun — 4H is just fun in general,” Amick said. Amick’s regular projects include geology, photography, woodworking and animal-related categories, including the

showing of chickens and rabbits. With a multitude of projects on his mind, Amick said his involvement has become a year-round affair. “I’m pretty much busy all the time,” he said. Through his experiences, he’s seen hard work transfer into success and he’s learned what it means to dedicate himself to the task at hand. He’s also been encouraged by the opportunities to serve the community. “In 4-H, you learn a bunch about working for the community, through

community service and stuff like that,” Amick said. As a leader in the county, Amick also has the chance to introduce young people to the world of 4-H — and inspire them along the way. In a recent visit with a group of Cloverbuds, Amick was pleased to witness their excitement. “They were really into 4-H,” Amick said of the young group. “One kid was into geology. He said he took me as his role model for it. It’s good to see little kids like that doing what they do in 4-H.”

Derbies offer a smashing good time By Mike Rose Bang! Smash! Pow! No, you’re not reading an old comic book. Those are in fact some of the sounds of one of the Mower County Fair’s most popular series of events — demolition derbies. At the 2010 Mower County Fair — which runs Aug. 10 to Aug. 15 — there will be three separate demolition derbies, each guaranteed to provide

6

SUNDAY, AUGUST 8, 2010

plenty of chaos and destruction. The first derby, set for Wednesday night at the Grandstand, will involve mid-size and compact cars. Later in the week, the bigger bruisers come out to play, as Saturday will feature the combine demolition derby and Sunday will bring trucks together for a smashing good time. John Mueller, the fair board’s president, said all of the events tend to draw big crowds.

“We have found, year after year, that demo derbies are probably the most popular events,” he said. And why do so many people turn out on derby night? Simple, Mueller said: “A lot of it is just the hitting and smashing and the roar of the engine.” He added: “They give fans a pretty good show.” And just because this year’s fair will only have the three derbies, don’t think that Mueller and crew haven’t thought of — and done — events with a host of other vehicles. A few years ago, this meant a school bus derby that attracted roughly 1,800 fans. Looking forward, Mueller said there a few new possibilities. “We’ve talked about everything from skid loaders to semis,” he said. For now, fans will have to enjoy compact cars, sedans, combines and trucks, all of which should put on quite the shows. And as an added incentive to go watch vehicles smash each other to bits, there will be bike giveaways — and a toy tractor giveaway during the combine derby — every night.

THREE DEMOLITION DERBIES PROMISE TO BE A SMASH •Wednesday night: Stock mid-size, compact and pro-mod cars. 7 p.m. •Saturday night: Combines. 7 p.m. •Sunday afternoon: Full-size and pro-mod trucks. 2 p.m. (All events at Grandstand and all cost $10 for ages 6 and up) Each derby will cost $10 to attend, with those 5 and under admitted for free. However, Mueller said fair — and derby — fanatics may want to invest in the Grand Pass. New this year, Grand Passes are good for six Grandstand events, but only cost $36.
