AJFF WELCOME TO THE 5TH ANNUAL AJFF! Dear film lovers: Welcome to the 5th anniversary of the Atlantic Jewish Film Festival (AJFF). This is going to be the best year yet! Produced in a wide range of countries (Israel, France, Hungary, Ukraine, the USA), the films on offer will engage and challenge you...and make you laugh, sometimes all in the same film! We are even partnering with Autism Nova Scotia to show Keep the Change starring two young adults with autism. This screening will be sensory-friendly to accommodate those who need a certain environment to be comfortable. However, everyone is welcome to attend and will undoubtedly enjoy this charming film. And to celebrate this anniversary year we have a special evening planned for the Saturday night screening of Budapest Noir, a murder mystery that will leave you guessing until its surprising climax. The party following the film, both at a new venue, the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, will celebrate our exciting milestone so expect some mouth-watering delicacies. Our opening film Sammy Davis Jr.: I’ve Gotta Be Me will delight and entertain you with its portrait of this multi-faceted and thoughtful man. We on the committee are looking forward to spending this exciting weekend with all of you.

AJFF AJFF MANDATE The Atlantic Jewish Film Festival (AJFF) is presented by the Atlantic Jewish Council, a not-for-profit society in Nova Scotia. The mission of the AJFF is to provide an opportunity for the public to experience the Jewish world through film. Our intentions are to celebrate diversity; to promote cultural awareness; to educate and support curiosity and learning; to spark conversation and questioning; and most importantly to inspire a greater understanding of Jewish life. We invite you to join us.

JEWISH FILM FESTIVALS In 1980 a group of people took a chance on starting a Jewish film festival in the Bay Area of San Francisco. Thirty-six years later, 35,000 people attend over 120 screenings annually over three weeks. Currently, there are more than one hundred Jewish film festivals around the world including in Africa and Hong Kong. The Halifax-based AJFF opened its festival doors five years ago.

Featuring new interviews with such luminaries as Billy Crystal, Norman Lear, Jerry Lewis, Whoopi Goldberg and Kim Novak, with never-before-seen photographs from Davis’ vast personal collection and excerpts from his electric performances in television, film and concert, Sammy Davis, Jr.: I’ve Gotta Be Me explores the life and art of a uniquely gifted entertainer whose trajectory blazed across the major flash-points of American society from the Depression through the 1980s. YEAR 2017 RUNNING TIME 120 minutes

At the beginning of the 20th century, in the Jewish shtetl of Anatovka, Jews and Christians are trying to live in peace and in accordance with their religious beliefs. Tevye, the milkman, struggles to support his wife and five daughters. He knows that their only way out of poverty is to make successful marital matches. Filmed on the actual locations which inspired Sholem Aleichem’s famous folk tale, this uproariously funny and buoyant cinematic sendup centres on a downtrodden milkman. Seeking to stave off poverty, Tevye cooks up a plan to marry off his lovely daughters. He commissions the aid of a matchmaker, but his daughters have no interest, choosing instead to cavort with an increasingly unsavoury lineup of suitors (to his mind, at least). All the while, Tevye’s way of life is also threatened by the Czarist government’s increasing anti-Semitic campaigns. Fiddler on the Roof is based on Sholem Aleichem’s Tevye’s Daughters 11

She tries to get close to him, hoping he’ll fall for her, but Eli is too preoccupied with the Palmach* and with smuggling Holocaust survivors into Palestine. Finally, the barriers come down and a compelling relationship develops between the two. But when he’s assigned to visit the Brooklyn Bridge with the vivacious Sarah, sparks fly and his convictions are tested. Their budding relationship must weather Sarah’s romantic past, David’s judgmental mother, and their own pre-conceptions of what love is supposed to look like. Under the guise of an off-kilter New York romantic comedy, Keep the Change does something quite radical in casting actors with autism to play characters with autism, offering a refreshingly honest portrait of a community seldom depicted on the big screen. Rarely has a romcom felt so deep and poignant. Thoroughly charming and quite funny, the film’s warmth and candor brings growth and transformation to the characters, and ultimately, to us. AJFF ABOUT THE AJC The Atlantic Jewish Council (AJC) has been the cornerstone of Jewish life in the Atlantic provinces since 1975, acting as the organized Jewish community’s representative and program/service provider for non-religious matters. With only a small staff complement and a modest budget, the AJC relies on the support of over 100 volunteers across Atlantic Canada to move the needle on our seven strategic priorities: • Building a sense of Jewish community across Atlantic Canada; • Strengthening Jewish identity amongst the Jews of Atlantic Canada; • Reinforcing the regional identity of the Atlantic Canadian Jewish community; • Supporting Israel; • Educating about the Holocaust and human rights; • Fostering relationships with and representing the Atlantic Jewish population to all levels of government, academic institutions, and Jewish and general organizations at both the national and local level; and • Educating the community of Atlantic Canada at large about Judaism. The AJC is happy to once again present the Atlantic Jewish Film Festival, this year celebrating its fifth anniversary! Please know that our door is always open should you want to learn more about, get involved with, or partner on any of our year-round activities. We hope you enjoy the show!
