MAGAZINE Extended Learning Class Schedule

Extended Learning

Letter from the President Dear Community, I want to highlight LBCC’s Extended Learning Community Education programs offering a wide variety of options for our whole community. LBCC’s Extended Learning offers classes both face-to-face and remotely. What makes Extended Learning so unique is the wide range of classes open to our community. Subjects include business development, fitness, art, and cooking. Though I am not quite ready, my youngest daughter will soon be taking advantage of our Driver’s Education courses. Thanks to our partnership with Knife River, LB offers Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training at their state-of-the-art new training facility in Linn County. Our youngest participants are infants, toddlers and pre-school kids enjoying Parenting Education’s Live & Learn series allowing parents to attend classes socializing with other parents while learning about their children’s milestones. This series of classes offer partial scholarships to ensure all families who are interested can attend. Our Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is a part of the Extended Learning programming where we now are able to offer classes in Spanish and English on creating and establishing a new business. The team at SBDC works with our small business community to help with marketing, finances and promotion to set a solid foundation for business success. I highly encourage reaching out to learn more about how they can help your business! Professional development and corporate training are also offered; investing in your organization’s staff benefits both the individual and employer. I hope you will take the opportunity to look into taking an Extending Learning class this winter. Whether it’s to brush up your Spanish or flex your muscles in an exercise class, I am certain we have a class for everyone to enjoy. These classes are a great example of my goal and promise to our community to offer anyone who wants to be at LBCC an open door to join our Roadrunner family through Education for All.

Thanks, Lisa Avery Linn-Benton Community College President Linn-Benton Community College Schedule of Classes is published quarterly by Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany, OR 97321-3755. OSU Thrift Shop opens doors to an LBCC education New Scholarship benefits local students seeking a quality education at Linn-Benton Community College. together for a common purpose. “The board recognizes that this financial support could be the determining factor in a student’s ability to attend college,” said Doug Severs, Thrift Shop Board President. “And the ripple effect that education has will impact families, neighborhoods, and our region as a whole.” EXPANDING ITS IMPACT The OSU Thrift Shop’s scholarship program exemplifies the shop’s evolution from its origins as a faculty spouses’ club to a thriving nonprofit enterprise. With an ability to adapt and expand, the shop’s board and volunteers have expanded the shop’s impact over time, while staying true to core values of education, sustainability, and community support.

Two OSU Folk Club Thift Shop 2023 scholarship recipients Xander Greenwood (left) and Coleen McMahon (right) The LBCC Foundation welcomes a new donor this year: the Oregon State University Folk Club Thrift Shop. The Folk Club Thrift Shop has a legacy of education and community support. In 2023 it will build on its history of scholarship support for OSU students to provide scholarships for eight local students returning or starting their academic journey later in life at Linn-Benton Community College. With each scholarship valued at $3,000, this initiative addresses a pressing need and promises to change lives. CLUB TO COMMUNITY COMMITMENT: NEARLY A CENTURY OF GIVING Since its inception in 1908, the OSU Folk Club has been a steadfast champion of education and community empowerment. In 1931, club members reached into their own pockets to establish the first $50 student scholarship, a tradition that continued until the birth of the Thrift Shop in 1949. What began as a consignment shop in a rented space has blossomed into a thriving enterprise now situated in a building owned by the Folk Club Thrift Shop. The shop exclusively sells donated items, ranging from clothing and housewares to hardware, books, artwork, and more. The Folk Club’s community grantmaking and its scholarship programs serve as a testament

to its transformation into a thriving nonprofit enterprise. EDUCATION FOR EMPOWERMENT Recognizing that cost often stands as a formidable barrier for local students, the thrift shop’s scholarship program seeks to bridge the gap and bring higher education within reach for local learners. The thrift shop’s scholarship selection process has evolved over time, with a shift towards prioritizing financial need over merit alone. This change ensures that the scholarships are accessible to a broader range of students and aligns with the LBCC Foundation’s commitment to inclusivity and opportunity. The Foundation will administer the new scholarships, ensuring a streamlined and efficient process and maximizing the impact of donor dollars. Since many local students begin their academic journey at LBCC before transferring to Oregon State, this scholarship program serves to strengthen the very fabric of the community. DEDICATED HEARTS, TRANSFORMATIVE IMPACT Behind this impactful endeavor are a dedicated Board of Directors and volunteers. Their shared commitment and dedication have not only enriched their own lives but also inspired others to come

Anticipation for the new LBCC scholarship initiative grows. The Foundation awarded 8 scholarships over the summer to students who will receive funds spread over the 2023-24 academic year to assist with tuition and living expenses. UNITE FOR IMPACT: A CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS The Thrift Shop’s philanthropy in our community is a testament to the power of collective action. That positive impact and community support is calling for a new chapter. With around 45 dedicated volunteers currently on board, there’s a call to action to bring more hands and hearts into the fold. Before the challenges of COVID-19, the thrift shop thrived with nearly twice as many volunteers, allowing the shop to operate five days a week and generating greater revenue to fuel their mission. Today, the shop is open two days a week. Why does this matter? The thrift shop’s profits are directly tied to its ability to support students through scholarships. The more the shop thrives, the more it can give back. If you’re passionate about creating change, support-ing students, and giving bacwk to the community, you can become a volunteer. Complete an application at https://osufolk.oregonstate.edu/thriftshop/volunteer. By volunteering, you’ll be supporting education, empowerment, and a brighter future for LBCC students and our community.
