WHAT HAPPENS NEXT FOR KYLE LARSON? In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp tackles the subject on seemingly everyone’s mind this week, that being Kyle Larson and the fallout from his saying a racial slur during a live iRacing broadcast. Life moves fast, and within 48 hours, Larson lost all of his sponsors (including marquee brands McDonalds and Credit One 0 0 4

Bank), and his job at Chip Ganassi Racing. This is on top of an indefinite suspension from NASCAR itself. So what will happen to Larson now? Will he land at another team, perhaps in a sister motorsport like World of Outlaws? Once a promising contender, he appears to have lost everything for now. But what’s next? Check out the episode to find out Eric’s predictions.

BIGGEST CHANGES TO NASCAR’S PREMIER SERIES IN THE LAST 20 YEARS Change — regardless of what it is — always makes some people nervous and uneasy. Other people, meanwhile, tend to embrace change and hope that it will ultimately lead to a better outcome for those affected by it. Over the past two decades, NASCAR has rolled out a number of key changes — some that have been almost universally embraced, and others that have taken fans and competitors alike some time to fully accept. Following is a list of the five biggest changes NASCAR has implemented for its premier series since the turn of the century. BY JA RED TURNER

THE MOVE AWAY FROM AND BACK TO SINGLE-CAR QUALIFYING

S

tealing a page from the Formula One playbook, NASCAR went way outside the box several years ago when it decided to scrap its traditional single-car qualifying procedures in favor of a group or “knockout”-style qualifying format featuring multiple qualifying rounds and numerous cars on the track at the same time. The change, introduced prior to the 2014 season, was designed to add a layer of suspense to qualifying after fans complained that single-car qualifying procedures had become tedious and boring. While the switch to group qualifying accomplished its purpose of making time trials a lot more entertaining to watch, it also created the unintended consequence of considerable turmoil and confusion, as teams would often try to game the system by waiting until the final moments of a round to send their cars out onto the track. Finally, in May 2019, NASCAR said that enough was enough and went back to single-car qualifying runs at all oval tracks for the foreseeable future.

THE LUCKY DOG

P

rior to the 2003 season, NASCAR required that any driver a lap down pass the leader under green in order to get back on the lead lap. While many purists and old-school fans still believe that drivers should have to pass to leader to regain a lost lap, this rule was inherently flawed because lapped cars would scramble to try to pass the leader coming to a caution flag, which sometimes resulted in a dangerous situation if drivers were accelerating to get a lap back while other cars were stopped on the track. So in 2003, NASCAR instituted what it calls the “Lucky Dog” rule, which allows the highest running driver one lap down at the time of every caution to get back on the lead lap. No longer required is that a driver pass leader under green to regain lead-lap status. Instead, drivers jockey to be the “Lucky Dog,” or the first driver one lap down.

DOUBLE-FILE RESTARTS

O

ne of the most popular changes made by NASCAR in relatively recent times was the decision to institute double-file restarts of lead-lap cars. Prior to the summer of 2009, cars one or more lap down lined up to the inside of lead-lap cars on every restart except restarts with 20 or fewer laps to go, which were single file. But beginning with the June NASCAR Cup Series event at Pocono, NASCAR changed the restart procedures for its premier series by opting to go with doublefile restarts of lead-lap cars regardless of when a caution might fall during a race. This new policy mirrored NASCAR’s restart procedures in the previous weekend’s All-Star Race, a non-points affair where double-file restarts of lead-lap cars had long been used to help spice up the show. Finally, a week after the 2009 running of the All-Star Race, NASCAR decided it was time to make double-file restarts of lead laps cars its standard procedure for every race.

THE CHAMPIONSHIP 4 AND PLAYOFF ELIMINATIONS

A

fter 10 years with a playoff in which the driver with the most points after the final 10 races was crowned champion, NASCAR added two new dimensions to the playoff format for its premier series beginning with the 2014 season. Instead of the champion being the driver with most points after the final 10 races, NASCAR instituted a one-race, “winner-take-all” championship finale where four drivers would race straight up for NASCAR’s top prize. Those four drivers — known as the Championship 4 — don’t earn any bonus points in the final race, ensuring that the highest finishing driver among the four finalists is the champion. Along with the creation of the Championship 4 for its top series, NASCAR expanded the playoff field from 12 to 16 drivers and implemented three elimination rounds each consisting of three races leading up to the final race. In each round, four drivers are eliminated from title contention while the others advance to the next round.

A SEASON-ENDING PLAYOFF

I

n all of the years leading up to 2004, the driver who totaled the most points over the course of a NASCAR Cup Series season was declared series champion. But after Matt Kenseth turned the championship battle into an all-out snoozefest in 2003, NASCAR executives decided the time for change had come and instituted a 10-driver, 10-race playoff from which the champion would be crowned. By resetting the point totals of the top 10 drivers after the season’s 26th race, it would erase the points lead of a driver who had perhaps dominated the “regular season” and had put a considerable points gap between himself and the rest of the field, which is what Kenseth did the previous year. While not immediately embraced by everyone, the move to a playoff format came to be widely accepted and accomplished its intended goal beginning in its very first season, which saw Kurt Busch win the championship by the narrow margin of just eight points.

RECAPPING JIMMIE JOHNSON’S NASCAR CAREER

■■ Jimmie Johnson edged Jeff Gordon by 0.065 seconds at Martinsville in 2007.

A CLASH OF TEAMMATES AT MARTINSVILLE JOHNSON, GORDON RACE TO A PHOTO FINISH BY JA RED TURNER

T

ogether, Hendrick Motorsports teammates Jimmie Johnson (nine wins) and Jeff Gordon (nine wins) have combined for an incredible 18 victories at Martinsville Speedway. Based on both drivers’ Martinsville success rate and overlapping careers, it was virtually inevitable that the two would have their share of battles with each other on the rugged .526-mile hardtop. Undoubtedly the fiercest of those battles came in the spring of 2007 when Johnson edged Gordon — his friend and mentor — to win the Goody’s Cool Orange 500 at Martinsville after the two drivers traded paint multiple times during the final laps in their boxy “car-oftomorrow”-style vehicles. Johnson ultimately held on to take the checkered flag ahead of Gordon by a narrow .065 seconds, surviving a last-lap, last-corner bump from his older teammate that could have easily derailed him. “I’m speechless for that,” Johnson said after leading 113 of 500 laps despite starting 20th on the grid. “I’ve looked up to Jeff my whole career, before I was even actually racing. “That was amazing there at the end. That was the hardest driving

I have ever done. Then to have my bumper beat off by my teammate in a way that didn’t jeopardize either one of us, a really class act by Jeff.” That fall, Johnson completed the season sweep at Martinsville. He later went on to capture his second NASCAR Cup Series championship in a row, which made him the first driver to win back-to-back titles since Gordon accomplished the feat during the 1997 and 1998 seasons. Johnson’s love — and mastery — of Martinsville only grew from that day forward, as he has since scored six more wins at the historic facility. But none were more memorable or hard-fought than his victory on April Fool’s Day 2007 over Gordon, the four-time champion who along with being his closest challenger at Martinsville that spring also became his closest challenger for the 2007 season championship.

OFFICIAL NASCAR MEMBER’S CLUB Q&A

MURPHY’S ONMC PERKS SPARK LOVE CONNECTION BY DA N GUT TENPL A N

Mike Murphy is one of the founding members of the Original NASCAR Members Club. While living in Lakeville, Ill., Murphy helped promote the sport in various capacities, including as a chapter president and longtime ONMC regional director. Murphy recently joined ROAR to discuss his experience. ▶  HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN A DIE-HARD NASCAR FAN? “I’ve been a big NASCAR fan since about 1985. I’m a car guy, and I started watching bits nad pieces and became extremely interested in it. I’m not only a NASCAR fan, I’m into classic or vintage cars. I’m the original owner of a 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am. My enthusiasm for NASCAR was that they were basically racing stock cars. That stirred my interest in it.” ▶  HOW DID YOU BECOME AFFILIATED WITH THE ONMC? “I’m usually not a club joiner. It was intriguing when I saw what the club was doing. I liked that people could go in the garage area and meet-and-greets with drivers, opportunities ordinary fans don’t have access to without an association with media, a race team or sponsor. They were enabling race fans to have access to see it all in person live.” ▶  WHAT ARE SOME OF THE PERKS OF YOUR AFFILIATION WITH THE ONMC? “There’s many. One example is last year, I was near Chicagoland Speedway. One of the most memorable memories I’ve had was through a weekend racing package. I invited a lady friend of mine because I was able to bring one guest. We had a hot pass, which permitted access to the garage area, the drivers meeting, a pace car ride on Sunday with a member of NASCAR for some hot laps. “Lastly, not only were we allowed in the pits if we didn’t want 0 2 2

hile watching eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series races may feel like Bill Murray’s movie, Groundhog Day, one driver who is enjoying the seemingly repetitive results as of late is Williams eSport’s Ryan Luza and his No. 53 Williams Ford Mustang team. However, Luza’s path to victory was not quite set in stone at the virtual Richmond Raceway. Qualifying deep in the field in 37th, it was clear that Luza and his team had their work cut out for them for Tuesday evening’s race. Moreover, Round 5 was truly a struggle for the field of 40 racers at “The Action Track.” While Luza methodically worked his way to the front, there were 16 caution periods totaling 77 laps. Although Luza made his march up the leaderboard look rather easy, for the 23-year-old Cypress, Texas native, it was a hard day’s night’s effort. Taking the lead for the first-time following pit stops on Lap 100, the 2017 eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series champion seemed destined for the victory before a caution for Keegan Leahy came out with 54 to go. As most of the leaders pitted with 52 to go, Jarl Teinen and his No. 66 G2 Esports Chevrolet Camaro team elected to stay out. Suddenly,

ESPORTS the Norwegian found himself in the lead with a determined Luza, pole sitter Jimmy Mullis, and consistent Bobby Zalenski ready to leap for the top spot. Suddenly, Teinen, staving off Luza and his competitors in the ensuing restart, appeared set on scoring his inaugural victory in this competitive division. Ultimately, as Teinen led the pack on a restart with 16 to go, Luza was not going to be denied at Richmond. With 14 to go, Luza snatched the lead from Teinen and this time, holding the top spot for good. Despite the race going into a pair of eNASCAR Overtime sessions, Luza rocketed his way to his third straight win of the 2020 season. “It wasn’t easy at all, I can’t believe this one,” Luza said. “I was gonna be happy with a top-20 and just not getting wrecked and made the right call. (We) took two tires early, got up to like around 20th, and then we had four tires for the really, really long run.” Naturally, Luza gave props to his virtual pit crew for his third consecutive win of the year. “The car was obviously 0 2 6

good, but without me getting as fortunate as I did, getting through lapped traffic, there’s no way I’d have made it up to third,” Luza observed. “I don’t know what the pit crew did on the stop to go from third to first but that’s what won the race for us.” Funnily, not even accidentally choosing the incorrect car derailed Luza’s efforts at Richmond. Instead of piloting his familiar No. 53 Ford Mustang, viewers and competitors saw the Texan driving in a black No. 53 Toyota Camry. Suffice to say, second-place finisher Michael Conti did not have a case of mistaken identity while Nathan Lyon, Zalenski, defending series champion Zack Novak, Teinen, Blake Reynolds, Malik Ray, Corey Vincent, and Graham A. Bowlin rounded out the top-10 finishing order. Interestingly, while Zalenski is winless in 2020, his consistent finishes, including four top-fives and five top-10 finishes, have rewarded him with the points lead while Luza, Leahy, Garrett Lowe, and Nick Ottinger round out the top-five driver’s points standings. Luza and his peers will take on the virtual Dover International Speedway for Round 6 of the season on Tuesday, April 28th, 2020, at 9:00 PM ET/8:00 PM CT. NASCAR.com will live stream the race along with iRacing’s Twitch channel.

HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE CORRIHER LOVES MULTI-TASKING FOR TEAM PENSKE BY BEN WHITE

S

cott Corriher, assigned to special projects/facilities with Team Penske, saw his first NASCAR race at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1970 at 6 years old. “I don’t recall if it was the May race or October race, but I do remember they were running the (Plymouth) Superbirds back then,” Corriher said. “I still have that memory of seeing them go around the race track and down the backstretch.” Corriher grew up on the farm where he worked on a variety of equipment and also with his grandfather’s sawmill that offered even more hands-on knowledge. As a teenager, he and his friends enjoyed tuning their high performance Chevelles, Camaros and Mustangs in their garages. While serving in the U.S. Marines from 1983 through 1987, famed NASCAR engine-builder Keith Dorton at Automotive Specialists worked on a set of cylinder heads on one of Corriher’s cars. That led to Dorton offering him a job where he remained for four years. In 1992, Corriher began building engines for Kranefuss Racing and driver Jeremy Mayfield alongside Larry Wallace at Power Tech Engines. Michael Kranefuss and Roger Penske merged their teams in 1997, giving Corriher the opportunity to build Dodge engines for Mayfield and Rusty Wallace when Penske purchased Power Tech in 2000. Dodge left NASCAR in 2012, prompting Corriher to transition to Penske’s Facilities department, helping to take care of the many buildings that make up Penske’s racing operations.

KYLE LARSON FACES CONSEQUENCES FOLLOWING USE OF RACIAL SLUR BY ROB TIONGSON

I

n a matter of 36 hours, Kyle Larson’s once virtually secure position as one of the leading young NASCAR Cup Series essentially vanished. Simply put, Larson jeopardized his career with a truly deplorable act when he dropped a racial slur over a communications channel heard by his competitors and fans during an iRacing event that streamed on various livestreams on Twitch last Sunday evening. Consequently, Larson was initially suspended by Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR) and NASCAR in the first half of Monday. Not long after, Credit One Bank, McDonald’s, Clover, and Chevrolet terminated their relationship with Larson, essentially sealing his immediate fate on Tuesday morning when he was released by CGR. When considering Larson’s fallout and the ramifications surrounding the 27-year-old racer and the world of NASCAR, all that can be said is that it is a sad, stark reminder that actions have consequences. Immediately, one must wonder why Larson

OP-ED said a word that is hurtful, offensive, and racist. Regardless of the reasons behind Larson’s use of a racial slur, ultimately, it is inexcusable and extremely disappointing. As a graduate of the Drive for Diversity program, he represented Asian Americans, a demographic that had not been a part of NASCAR’s 72-year history. Although a racer who, at times, was reluctant about his background, he was a once proud representative of NASCAR’s diversity efforts. As the first Japanese American to win a NASCAR Cup Series race in 2016 at Michigan, he earned the

0 3 2

praise and admiration of race fans in the world of stock cars and dirt tracks. Along the way, he scored five more victories, most recently at Dover International Speedway last October. Certainly, Larson seemed destined for a NASCAR career with a bright future, particularly this year as one of the coveted free agent racers for the 2021 season. Instead, he faces the immediate consequences of his actions. The aftermath of his action is one that he must face with deep thought, not only for himself, but for others. In a time when NASCAR was carrying the torch for the world of sports with virtual races, Larson’s use of a racial slur possibly damages the progress made for the series and its digital counterpart. Up until now, fans were able to tune into various racers’ live streams in an unfiltered, essentially all-access format. Despite how fans perceive Larson’s fallout and whether he is deserving of a second chance, the fact that he used the slur in the first place is intolerable and uncalled for at any place at any time. There will not be an easy path to forgiveness and redemption, should it be around at all. Even with his apology video posted on his social media outlets, it will take more than his clip to be in position for another opportunity in NASCAR or any premier motorsports division. For as quickly as it all fell apart for Larson, and to an extent, NASCAR, the path towards that second chance will be a long, contemplative road where Larson must be more conscientious.

our years after his death in 2016, Virginia native Lennie Pond is still remembered as one of NASCAR’s most popular driver-team owners in the sport’s 72-year history. The native of Ettick, Va., was raised on his family farm where he was no stranger to hard work. With Virginia being a hotbed for short track racing, Pond found himself visiting several race tracks as a teenager in the mid-1950s to see local stars battle for wins and championships. tracks. He found a job working as a mechanic during the week and raced in Virginia as well as Maryland and the Carolinas on weekends. A visit to Petty Enterprises in Level Cross, N.C., in 1972 to buy racecar parts set the stage for his future Cup Series career. On the return trip home, he and close friend Ronnie Elder discussed an unthinkable plan of fielding a car on NASCAR’s elite Winston Cup circuit. With volunteer help and an extremely limited budget, they built a Chevrolet in Pond’s single-car clapboard garage and entered the full 28-race Cup schedule in 1973. Against all odds,

he won Rookie of the Year honors over eventual three-time Cup Series champion Darrell Waltrip. Pond entered 234 races, scored one win, 39 top-fives and 88 top-10s with five pole positions. His best championship finish of fifth came in 1976 with his lone win coming at Talladega Superspeedway on Aug. 6. 1978. “It was a good year,” Pond said. “(Harry) Ranier came down and helped us because we had run all we could do and couldn’t do any more. and won it with Donnie Allison finishing second.” Pond drove his last race on September 10, 1989 at Richmond International Raceway for team owner Junie Donlavey and finished 11th. He worked as a car salesman for a Chevrolet dealership in Chester, Va., for decades after he retired from driving. “I loved being out there and it’s what I wanted to do all my life,” Pond said. “It was tough because we didn’t have anything to do it with. It was a lot of fun and a lot of work but I never thought of it as work.”

r. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious diseases expert and one of the faces of the United States’ fight against the coronavirus, says the only way professional sports will happen this summer is by holding events without fans in attendance and by keeping players in hotels. “There’s a way of doing that,” Fauci told Snapchat’s Peter Hamby as part of a weeklong interview series. “Nobody comes to the stadium. Put [the players] in big hotels, wherever you want to play, keep them very well surveilled. ... Have them tested every single week and make sure they don’t wind up infecting each other or their

NASCAR RELEASE family, and just let them play the season out.” Fauci, who specifically addressed a question about an abbreviated baseball season and the start of football, said he thought there would be enough interest from fans to watch games, even if they could not attend. Major League Baseball and its players have been considering plans that could allow them to start the season in a single location, likely Arizona, with no fans attending, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan last week. On Tuesday, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey said his state would be willing to host all 30 major league teams if conditions allow for it. Fauci’s comments come a week after 72% of Americans polled by Seton Hall University’s Stillman School of Business said they would not attend if sporting events resumed without a vaccine for the coronavirus. Just 13% of Americans said they would feel comfortable attending games the way they had in the past. A second poll 0 4 4

this week had a slight plurality, 46% to 36%, saying the NFL season should not open as scheduled in early September. President Donald Trump, who has regularly received input from Fauci, said Tuesday that he is including figures from the sports world -- including NBA commissioner Adam Silver, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban -- to help shape his plans to reopen the coronavirus-battered economy. Fauci noted to Hamby his interest in being able to watch the World Series champion Washington Nationals. “I want to see them play again,” he said. Two more parts of the Snapchat interview with Fauci are scheduled to be released Thursday and Friday. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

ASCAR Hall of Fame driver Bill Elliott recorded 38 of his 44 NASCAR Cup Series victories and claimed the 1988 series title while driving car No. 9. It’s a number that became synonymous with Elliott and his family-owned team that raced out of Dawsonville, Georgia., during the 1980s. Seventeen years after Elliott last drove car No. 9, it’s only fitting that his son, Chase Elliott, is carrying on the family tradition. The younger Elliott is in his ■■ 1985–Bill Elliott (ISC Archives photo via Getty Images)

third season of driving the No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. Overall statistics show that cars carrying No. 9 in the NASCAR Cup Series have recorded 59 victories with 510 top-10 finishes in 1,627 starts. Bill (38) and Chase (6) Elliott have combined for 44 of those victories while Kasey Kahne, who replaced Bill Elliott at Evernham Motorsports in 2014, won 11 times in car No. 9. Pee Wee Martin used No. 9 on his Oldsmobile during the inaugural Cup Series race on June 19, 1949, at the Charlotte Speedway dirt track. He finished 29th in the 33-car field. Herb Thomas was the first driver to win a NASCAR Cup Series race using No. 9 when he topped the Oct. 26, 1952, event at North Wilkesboro Speedway. His younger brother, Donald Thomas, then won the next series race in the same car at Lakewood Speedway near Atlanta.

▶  WHAT’S THE SUPPORT BEEN LIKE FROM YOUR PARTNERS SINCE YOUR WIN? “Ororo Heated Apparel came on for Martinsville and the sponsors for the first three races this year have all come from conversations right after Talladega. It shows that our team is capable of winning. My teammates and I all had different moments of running in the top five.”

▶ WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR? “For me, growing up late model racing at short tracks, I love Richmond and I’m excited we’re going there. I love Martinsville, Gateway and Iowa.” ▶ WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO THROUGHOUT THIS BREAK? “I went to school for marketing and I do a lot of my own marketing. I pride myself in that, and I’ve been busy with that. I’ve been on iRacing, too. I picked up some wins.”
