Editorial Dearreaders, AsaresultoflockdownsduetotheCoronapandemic,ourpartnersoftenhadtointerrupttheirwork andfindnewwaysofworkinglastyear.Childrenandyoungpeoplealsosufferedincreasedpoverty andoftenhungerastheirparentsbecameincreasinglyunemployed.Itisbecomingapparentthatthe Russiandictator'sassaultwillnowfurtherincreasethehardshipofthepeopleinthepartners'countries bymakingbasicfoodstuffsmoreexpensiveoreveneliminatingthem.

Theyear2021wasalsoaspecialyearforus:TheAssociation"ZukunftfürKinderinSlumse.V." (FutureforChildreninSlums),foundedbyallmembersoftheFoundation‘sCouncilinDecember 2020,wasrecognisedasanon-profitorganisationinJanuary2021.ThenewAssociationwasthenable tocontinueandevenexpandtheworkoftheFoundationofthesamenameinFebruary.Wenow jointlysupportnotonlytheAyieraInitiative(Ai)intheKorogochoslumofNairobi/Kerniaandthe BasketballArtistsSchool(BAS)inthetownshipofKatuturainWindhoek/Namibia.Newpartnersare theNepalYouthProgramme(NYP)inKathmandu/Nepalandabasketballwheelchairprojectofthe ParalympicCommitteeofRwanda.ThismeansweareactiveinAsiaagainandalsoinsSportsfor disabledpeople. Thesearenothugeprojects.ButwecontinuetotaketoheartthesentenceoftheChinesephilosopher Confucius"Itisbettertolightalittlelightthantocursethedarkness."With"SportsforDevelopment andPeace"weexclusivelysupportpartnerswhohelpchildrenandyoungpeopletoovercometheir povertybytheirowneffortsthrougheducationandhealthpromotion.
Oursupportwasmainlyfocusedon -themajoreducationandhygieneprogrammeKSHP,whichcontinueduntiltheendoftheyear, -andthesocio-psychologicalsupportthattookplacenotonlyinAi'seducationcentrebutalsointhe shacksoftheslumdwellers.
TheHandwashingandHygieneProgrammeKSHP
OurPartnerintheKorogochoSlumofNairobi/Kenya TogetherwithourAssociation"ZukunftfürKinderinSlumse.V."(FutureforChildreninSlums),our FoundationquicklyandunbureaucraticallysupportedtheaidmeasuresdevelopedbytheAyiera Initiative(Ai)tomitigatecoronadamage.Wewerealsoabletowinothersupportersforthis, especiallytheGermanDoctorsandtheGrammarSchoolAlleestraßeinSiegburg.Asanongovernmentalorganisation(NGO),wewereonceagainabletorespondmorequicklywiththeprivate donationswereceivedthanotherswiththeirstate-fundedprojects.
THEAYIERAINITIATIVE
Commentingontheprogramme,whichstartedinmid-May2020andranuntilDecember2021,Ayiera writes: "Dailystatisticscollectedbytheindividualyouthgroupsinchargeofthestationsindicatethat KSHPservedanaverageof20,000Korogochoslumresidentsdaily.Ouranalysisshowsthatthis programmereachedover120,000slumdwellerswhowerethemaintargetgroup." 4
Aftertheendofthestrictlockdown,Aiadditionallyresumedthenormalprojectprogrammewith -themonthlymedicalcheck-upsbytheGermanDoctorsattheYouthandEducationCentre, -school-basedtrainingattheAicentre, -thepromotionofschoolvisitsthroughscholarshipsand -lifeskillseducationthroughculturalandsportsprogrammes,financedbyaCARE/BMZproject. -Newlyaddedsince2021isapilotprojectwithuniversityscholarshipsinitiatedandfinancedbyus, aswellasa"communityclean-upprogramme".
Behindthisheadingistheextensivehygiene andeducationprogrammeKSHP(Korogocho SlumHygieneProgramme).Atitsheartwere AI'seducationteamsandthe1000-litrewater tanksthatwereplacedat17strategiclocationsoftennearschools.Thelaunchwasmade possiblebyourdonors,whospontaneously donated€15,000inMay2020inresponseto ourappealforhelp.Bytheendof2021,wehad raisedanother€13,000forthisprogramme. Soapandfreshwaterweredelivereddailyby tankertrucks.Everyslumdweller,youngor old,couldwashtheirhandshere,butatthe sametimeanAyierateaminformedthemabouttheimportanceofhygieneasaprotectionagainst diseasesandespeciallyagainstCoronainfection.Postersandflyersprovidedlastingeducation.Since mostinformalschoolsintheKorogochoslumdonothaveanadequatewatersupply,hand-washing stationsnearsuchschoolswereparticularlywelcome.
Atotalof420familieswereidentifiedforcounselling,110requiredongoingcounsellingsessionsand frequentfollow-ups.About8wereonthevergeofcommittingsuicidewhentheywereapproachedby us.GiventheurgentneedforcounsellingfortheresidentsofKorogochoslum,thetwohelperswere busyvisitingthehomesoftheidentifiedfamiliestoofferguidance,counsellingandemotionalsupport. AfterAIreceivedpermissionfromtheauthoritiestoresumeitsactivitiesatthecentre,56group counsellingsessionswereconductedforchildrenand18adolescentswereofferedindividual counselling,takingintoaccounttheirsituation.Thegroupsessionswereheldonweekends." WeoweaspecialhelptotheGermanDoctors:TheymadeitpossiblefortheAyieraInitiativetohand outfoodpackagesto900householdsintheyouthandeducationcentreduringtheCoronapandemic. Insomecases,AIalsotookthefoodparcelstothehutsofparticularlyfrailpeople.
Monthlymedicalcheck-ups
OnthelastSaturdayofeverymonth, doctorsandotherstafffromthe GermanDoctorsNairobi(GDN) healthcentrearrivedfromthe neighbouringMatareslumand transformedthehallofAI'seducation centreintoalargemedical examinationroom.Allslumdwellers werethusofferedtheopportunityto haveregularmedicalcheck-upsand toreceivefree,reliablemedicalhelp onaregularbasisinordertoprevent chronicdiseasesasearlyaspossible.
Formanyyears,thefoundationhasfinancedtwosocialworkerswithbasicpsychologicaltrainingto helpchildrentraumatisedbythemiseryintheslum.Theirprovenhelphasnowencounteredadditional challengesintheCoronapandemic.TheAyieraInitiativewritestousaboutthisinitsannualreport: "GiventhedesperateandharshlivingconditionsintheKorogochoslum,therehasalwaysbeena greatneedforcounsellingservicesfortheslumdwellersofKorogocho.TheCovid19pandemichas furtherintensifiedthisneed.Inthiseraofcoronavirus,manyfamilies,childrenandadultshavebeen traumatisedbythenegativeeffectsofthedisease.Duetotheclosures,lossofjobsandrestricted movement,lifehasbecomeextremelydifficultformanyslumfamilies.Againstthisbackdrop,AI initiatedhome-basedcounsellingsupportthroughitscounsellorsforparents/guardiansand participantswhohavebeenplacedinadifficultsituationduetotheCoronaviruspandemic.These individualswereidentifiedduringhomevisitsbyAIstafftoassesstheimpactofCovid-19onour participantsandtheirfamilies.
ThiswasmadepossibleaboveallbythepartnershipoftheAlleestraßesecondaryschoolinSiegburg withitsdonationof10,000€fromthe"DayforAfrica"andbytheheadquartersoftheGerman DoctorsinBonn.Thecostsoftheexaminations,themedicationadministeredand,inurgentcases,the follow-uptreatmentintheGDNhealthcentreinMatare,the"BarakaHealthCentre",wereshared.We coveredthelogisticcostsandespeciallytheemploymentofaCommunityHealthWorker(CHW).His 5
TheCounsellingprogramme
AllofAI'sactivitiesaimtoempowerindividualsandthecommunityinwaysthatimprovetheirlives. Thepromotionofeducationandofhealtharethemaingoalsoftheir"SportforSocialDevelopment" programme.Thisisinlinewiththeguidingprincipleofourfoundationandourassociation: "Educationandhealtharethemostimportantprerequisitesforpeopletoovercometheirpoverty themselves.Sportfordevelopmentandpeacecreatesmotivationandenthusiasmforthis."
Aprovenpartnership
Thecommunityclean-upprogramme
AftertheendofthestrictlockdownimposedbytheKenyangovernmentandthereopeningofschools, wehavenotresumedourscholarshipprogrammeforprimaryandsecondaryschoolstudents,which wehavebeenfundingsince2013.Thisisbecause"AktionDeutschlandHilft"andCAREGermany wereabletowinovertheHerbertNaschFoundationtofundsuchaprogrammewithover300 scholarships.Weusedpartofourfundsthusfreeduptofinance4universityscholarships.AIwas happytostartthispilotprojectwithustoenablepreviouslyfundedsecondaryschoolstudentswith goodschoolresultstopursueanacademiccareer. Afterthefirstyearofthepilotproject,AIstates, "Sincethelaunchofthisprogramme,manyneedy youngpeoplehavecomeforwardtoapplyforuniversityscholarships.Thismayindicatethatinthe Korogochoslum,manyyoungpeoplearequalifiedandwillingtopursuetheirstudies,butcannot affordthemeanstostartorcontinueauniversityeducation,sotheyeventuallyabandontheir educationaltogetherordropout.AIisveryoptimisticthatwiththesescholarships,theseyoungpeople willbeleadingcatalystsforpromotingsocialchangeanddevelopmentintheslums."
AIconductedfiveclean-upcampaignsindifferent partsoftheslum.360youngpeopleparticipatedin theseclean-upcampaigns.Manyyoungpeoplethus showedgreatinterestintheseactions,whichtook placeeverymonthsincethebeginningoftheproject. Theeducationalgoalwastoencourageyoungpeople fromKorogochoslumtocontinuouslyservetheir communitybyimprovingthehygienicconditionsin theslum.Themaintargetgroupisyoungpeople whohadbenefitedfromAIprogrammesand activitiesovertheyears.WeenabledAItoprovide workingmaterialssuchaswheelbarrows,shovels andbroomsforthisactivity.
6 taskistocarryouthomevisits,identifybedriddenorextremelyillpeopleintheKorogochoslum, educate,trainpeopletotakeadvantageofthepreventivehealthcheck-upaswellastopayattentionto theimplementationoftheexaminationresultsandthecorrectintakeoftheprescribedmedication. Ayieratellsus: "Inthetwelvemedicalcamps,AIreachedatotalof3901people,includingchildren andadultsfromtheKorogochoslumandsurroundingareas.Manypeoplehavebeendiagnosedwith respiratorydiseasesandrecurringeyeproblemscausedbythedangerouschemicalsburntatthe dumpsite,whichdoctorssaycanleadtopermanentblindnessifnottreatedintime."
Educationfunding
"Thepandemichadposedgreatchallengestotheimpoverishedslumdwellers:Theylosttheirmeagre livelihoods.TheabruptclosureofschoolslettodepressionamongchildrenandtheSTAY-AT-HOME instructionincreaseddomesticviolence,especiallyamongwomenandchildren.Wehadtointerveneas thepandemicthreatenedtoundothepositiveimpactofourprojecttoempowerdestitutechildrenand improvethelivesofunderprivilegedslumdwellersintheslum.Withthehelpofpartnersandsupporters, wewereabletomakeanimportantcontributiontothefightagainsttheCoronaviruspandemicinthe slumbydevelopingeffectivestrategiestoraiseawarenessandpreventthetransmissionofthevirus amongtheslumdwellers.Weareproudtohavesupportedthesluminavertingapotentialcrisisby developinginterventionsthatplayedacriticalroleinreducingtherateofinfections.Wealsohave alleviatedtheburdenonslumdwellersduringthemostdifficulttimes“

Fromghettotouniversity
PaulOmbimawasbornandraisedintheKorogochoslum.Thefamilylivesinasingleroom.His motherworksveryhard.HeattendedprimaryschoolattheJiraniEducationCentre,locatedrightnext toanopenrubbishdump.TheAyieraInitiativealreadyhelpedhimhereby cushioningthecostsofprimaryschool.Thiswasfollowedbysecondary school:hecompletedbothlevelswithverygoodgrades-adecisive prerequisiteforadmissiontouniversity.Itwouldn'thaveworkedwithout theAyierainitiative

"Now,thankstothissupport,IamatthemaincampusofEgerton UniversityinNjoro,"saysPaul."I'mhappythattheAyieraInitiativepays formydailyuniversityexpenses,aswellasfoodandrent."Withoutthis help,hesays,"itjustwouldn'thavebeenpossible".Inthemeantime,hehas arrivedatthefinalyearofhisstudies.Paulisnotonlygrateful.Heisalso justifiablyproudofhimself.Afterall,hisacceptancetotheuniversity workedoutbecausehewasabletopresentaverygoodoverallscoreand goodperformanceintheexams.Thechallenges,however,don'tstopthere.
"SometimesIstrugglewithmymothertoraisemylittlebrothersandsisters." ThisishowPauldescribeshisdutiesastheeldestsonwithoutafather.
PaulOmbimaisoneofthefourrecipientsofouruniversityscholarships.Hewasonthevergeof droppingoutofhisstudies.Thetuitionfeesweretoohighforhimandhisfamily,andhismother desperatelyneededhelptosupportthefamily.Thishadbecomehispriority.Heistheeldestoffour siblingslivingwithoutafather.TheAyieraInitiativefinallyselectedhimasoneoffourforthe universityscholarshipprogramme.

Postersandflyersprovidedlastingeducation. SincemostinformalschoolsintheKorogocho slumdonothaveanadequatewatersupply, hand-washingstationsnearsuchschoolswere particularlywelcome.

COVID-19intheslum,theGermanDoctorsandfourscholarships

Butitisobviousthattheyhaveenoughtodo tokeeptheirhutfromfallingdownandto fightagainstalltheotherdifficultiesthat determinetheirlivesonadailybasis.
AyieraFoodDistribution Nooneisforgottenhere
Since2019,wehavebeensupportingtheNamibiannon-governmentalorganisation(NGO) "BasketballArtistsSchoolFoundation(BAS)"inthetownshipKatuturaofWindhoek.Itsprimary goalisthedevelopmentofthepersonality("lifeskillseducation")ofchildrenandyoungpeople.The foundationforthisislaidaboveallintheafternoonpromotionofschoolandvocationaltraining.A veryqualifiedbasketballtrainingaftertheremediallessonsmotivatestoparticipateandpromotesthe senseofcommunity.
ThegoalsoftheBASFoundationare:
BASisasafehaveninthetownshipfor50childrenandadolescentsaged10to20.Halfofthemare maleandhalffemale,andtheyareselectedaccordingtocertaincriteriainalong-termprocess.Allgo toschool,fromprimarytosecondary.Inaddition,thereareabout10alumniaged20-24whosupport theprogramme.

Insteadofregressingduringthelockdown,thechildrenflourishedandmadegreatstridesforward. Thiswaspossiblebecauseofatightscheduleforeachparticipatingchildthatincludedtutoring,life skills,self-reflectionandmuchmore."
DirectorRamahMumbawritesinhis2021annualreporttous:„Westillmanagetoprovideforthose whowerearoundandthenlaterforeveryonewhentheycameback.Apositivethingwasthatno matterwhathappenedin2021,wemanagedtostilldowhatweweresupposedtoeventhoughitwas doneabitdifferent,soweendedupachievingallourgoalsfortheyear,thefundsweresohelpfuland necessaryforourcontinuationoftheprogram.“

BAShasanutritionprogrammethatprovidesmealseveryday.Thisprogrammehasbeeninplace since2010andisoneofthemostimportantbuildingblocksinBAS'concept.Indeed,theimportance ofthenutritionprogrammecannotbeunderestimated.Tobeadequatelyandaboveallhealthily nourishedremainsadreamformanychildreninthetownship.However,itisnoteasyforBASto financethepurchaseoffoodforthechildrenandyoungpeople.Thisisbecausemanydonor organisationsprovidefundsquicklyinthecaseoffamine,butotherwiseprefertousethemfor "hardware"thatlastslongerandthatcanalsobevisited.Thatistheirunderstandingofsustainabilty.In ouropinion,however,healthynutritionandaboveallthepreventionofhunger,especiallyforchildren, isalso"verysustainable".Itiswellknownwhatneurologicaldamagemalnutritioncausesinchildren.
"Thereisnoonetojudgeme"

ForTheresiaVaino,BASmeansfamily.There,the15-year-old "feelssofree,lovedandaccepted.I canexpressmyselfandIamalwaysmyself," shesays.Inthisfamily, "thereisnoonetojudgeme." Thisexperience,shesays,isthebestgiftshehasreceivedfromGod.Forher, "BASisalifesaver."

Whentheycome homefromschool,thefoodisready.Regularmealsareanimportantconstantfortheyoungpeople. That'swhyTheresiaemphasisesthis: "I'veneverexperiencedadaywhenwedidn'teat." Materialsfor readingandwritingarealsoprovided.BASprovidestheyoungpeoplewithpaper,pens,glue,scissors, erasers,etc.Andeventablets,thepurchaseofwhichwasmadepossiblebythe"FoundationFuturefor ChildreninSlums"inthelasttwoyears.Theresiagoesintoraptures: "ThereisnothingthatBASdoesnotprovideuswith.Andthebestpartisthatwegetitforfree. Aswithourotherpartners,NYP'sworkwasinterruptedlastyearbyanationallockdownduetothe Coronapandemic.Inhisannualreport,DirectorRajivNepalidescribeshowNYPfinallytriedtocope withtheeffectsofthepandemicafteralonginterruptionwiththehelpof"SportsforSocial Development"asfollows: “Inmostoftheunderdevelopedcountries,sportsaretakenjustasanentertainmentfortheliving. Manyofusarestillunawareabouttheinfluenceofsportthatcanbringpositivechangesinindividuals andinthesociety.Sportitselfisaneducationandthroughthismanyofsocialdevelopmentactscanbe realized.NYP,asarecognizedorganization,todedicateforthedevelopmentofthesociety/ community,devotingthetimeandeffortonchildrenandyouthtoenhancetheirskillandeducatein liferelatedpatternsotomakethemabletobethepartofsocialdevelopmentandtosupportfor thecreationofbetterandmeaningfulsocialliving.Theproject,sportsforsocialdevelopment,is designedtoempowertheyouthandchildrenthroughsports(speciallyfootball)andeducational activitiesinalong-termvision.“

NYPseesitselfprimarilyasafootball academyforchildrenandyoung people.Fromtheverybeginning, NYPhasplacedemphasisonteaching socialskillssuchasdiscipline,fair play,teamwork,responsibilityfor societyandschooleducationin additiontothefootballtrainingfor childrenandyoungpeople.Our AssociationsupportsNYP'sworkin theschooleducationsector,especially inthedevelopmentandproductionof teachingandlearningmaterialsthat servetoincorporatesportsinto primaryschoollessons.The foundationofparentdiscussion groupsisalsopartoftheprogramme.Inaddition,costsfortheprogrammecoordinator,trainersand instructorsarecovered.
SinceMarch2021,weareagainactiveinAsiabysupportingthe"NepalYouthProgramme"(NYP)in Kathmandu.Thisorganisationwasfoundedin2015byRajivNepali(whoisstilltheheadofNYP today)andbyHolgerObermann,aGermanfootballlegend.DuringhisyearsinNepal,MrObermann –astheDFB's"sportsdevelopmentexpert"–encouragedthefoundingofNYPandaccompaniedits developmentuntilhisdeathinOctoberlastyear.In2017,NYPwasrecognisedbythestateasanongovernmentalorganisation.In2018,Obermannwasabletoinspireyoungfootballcoachesfrom MerzhausennearFreiburg(Germany)tofoundthepartnershipassociation"JAYNepalYouth Programmee.V.".TheytravelledtoNepalandhelpedtofurtherdeveloptheworkingstructureofNYP withnewcurriculas (see:www.jaynyp.de)

-From1stofNovember,weeklyprogramEarlyChildhoodDevelopmentresumedbutwiththevery smallernumberofattendances(around10)
-On10thSeptemberwehaveconductedatwo-hourorientationsessionconcernedtotheprevention andawarenessofCOVID19andfrom12thofSeptember,startedregularFootballtrainingforseniors 2021,withaverageparticipationof15youth.AndfromDecember,weresumedfootballtrainingfor thejuniors,buttheparticipationwasnotasexpected.InAverage10juniorsparticipatedthetraining.
Itwasdefinitelydifficultforallofustocopewiththedifficultsituation.Allofusprioritized thehealth-relatedlivingcircumstancesastheCOVID19infectionrisingagainandagainin phases.Thishasblockedallofustogowiththeregularplanningandschedules.Withthe patientandwellcareofeachotherwearemaintainingourhealthsotobeabletoeffortfor theplannedprograms.Forus,duringthisdifficulttimetoobeingabletobetogetherand developkindcooperationwasthemainsuccess.Themajorlessonduringthisperiodthatwelearntis workingtogetherforeachothersecuresthefuturesuccess.“
Theproject"Sportsfor SocialDevelopment"was supposedtobeimplemented withfinancialsupportfrom "ZukunftfürKinderin Slumse.V."(ZKV)from March2021,butcouldnot startasplannedduetothe secondwaveofthe COVID-19pandemic.Rajiv Nepaliwrotetous: „Followingtherulesand regulationthatNepal governmentannouncedfor thepreventionfromCOVID 19,theprogramactivities couldstartonlyfromSeptember2021.ItwasforNYPnoteasytoreorganizethegroupsofyouth, childrenandtheparentsfortheirinvolvementinNYPprograms.Besides,thebadweatherduringthis timetoohadanegativeinfluenceonconductingrescheduledprogramsasmostoftheNYPyouth, childrenandparentswereunavailableduetotheflueandcommoncold.Itwasverychallengingforus tocontinuetheNYPactivitiesduringthedifficulttimeofthisCOVIDpandemic.Wehadtotakebreaks, reorganizeagainandagainandtakingriskfortheentiregroupwasaverydifficultmoment.Butwe learntthatthroughtakingcareofeachother,thereisalwaysapositivesolution.

In2022,wewillagainsupportour partnertoofferadditionalactivities inthetwoschoolcentres.
WHEELCHAIRBASKETBALL
TheschoolcentresinthetownsofNyanzaandHuye,wheremorethan1,000childrenuptotheageof 17aretaught,havemanyyoungpeoplewithdisabilities,someofwhomalsoliveinthecentres.Unlike childrenandyoungpeoplewithoutdisabilities,thereareverylimitedopportunitiesforthisgroupto participateinsports. Childrenandyoungpeoplecouldlearnandplaythissport,supportedbysportsteacherswhohave experiencewiththesportofwheelchairbasketballascoaches.Inaddition,teachersintheschool centresweretrainedtobeabletocontinuethesportingactivitiesevenaftertheexternalfundingcame toanend.Ourfinancialsupportwasalsousedtopurchasesportswheelchairstosupplementthestock ofourpartner,theRwandaParalympicCommittee,sothatseveralteamscanplay.
FromApriltotheendof2021,youngpeopleintwoschoolcentresintheneighbourhoodofthecapital KigalioftheEastAfricanstateofRwandaweregiventheopportunitytolearnandplaythesportof wheelchairbasketballaspartoftheprojectwearesupporting.

Whenselectingtheyoungpeople,carewastakento ensurethatparticipantswithdifferentphysical disabilitiesandalsotwoyoungpeoplewithan intellectualdisabilitycouldtakepartinthe activities.Similartowheelchairbasketballin clubsandleagues,peoplewithdifferent degreesofdisabilitiesshouldplaytogetherin theactivitieswepromoteinRwanda.
Theideaistogiveeveryonethechanceto participateaccordingtotheirabilitiesandnot toexcludeanyone.TheEnglishtermsability anddisabilitycanbeusedtoexplainthe conceptverysimply. Fromthefeedbackofsomeparticipantsitis clearthattheyhavereceivedalotofpositive impulsesfortheirlifesituationwithdisabilities throughtheexperiencewithwheelchairbasketball. Theprogrammewasaccompaniedlastyearbytwo journalistswhoreportedontheactivitiesinthemedia. Thiswasdonewiththeaimofcontributingtothe reductionofthe"stigmaofdisability".Theaimofour projectwiththe"ParalmypicCommitteeofRwanda" istopromotethisinthepublic.
