Animal layering system The Animal Layering System consists of a Baselayer, Midlayer and an Outer Shell. All garments are developed to provide suitable protection from the elements when in pursuit of the freesport lifestyle. Designed to perform on the street and the slopes, the garments can work individually or cohesively to protect you from the wind, rain and cold.

High profile fabric types, together with Animal’s own technically enhanced fabrics, have been used to provide comfort, style and protection. Wearing the three Animal layers as a complete unit will maximise their performance and keep you warm and dry in the most extreme conditions.

Midlayer

Outershell

Made up of synthetic fibres, this insulating layer is worn over the baselayer. The midlayer is an extremely effective insulating barrier with the prime function to trap air and retain its insulating abilities even when wet.

Made up of synthetic fibres, this insulating layer is worn over the baselayer. The midlayer is an extremely effective insulating barrier with the prime function to trap air and retain its insulating abilities even when wet.

Baselayer Fully breathable and non-absorbent, the baselayer is worn closest to the skin. It effectively wicks moisture away from the body, minimizing wet conductive heat loss.

Waterproofing Information

DWR outer coating

In simple terms the waterproof rating of a garment (measured in millimetres) refers to the amount of water held in a tubular measuring device the fabric will resist without leaking. The higher the number the greater the waterproof rating i.e. the Andri jacket is rated WP10,000mm & Chilam is WP5,000mm. The higher rating - the greater performance but at an increased price.

A special coating applied to the outer surface of a fabric which repels snow & rain. The coating makes water ‘bead up’ & run off the fabric. DWR (Durable Water Repellency) degrades over time & when washed.

Breathability Information

Tightly woven to form a barrier to the wind and treated with DWR coating (see DWR section). Thicknesses vary allowing either greater flexibility or increased abrasion resistance and durability. Some areas may have a ‘scrim’ or ‘rip stop’ woven pattern to prevent and limit tearing.

In simple terms the breathability rating of a garment (measured in millimetres) refers to the amount of water that can pass through the membrane fabric from a tubular measuring device over a 24 hour period i.e. the Andri jacket is rated at MP-10,000G/M 2/24HRS. The higher the number - the greater the breathability at an increased cost.

Benefits of a breathable garment When riding your body creates moisture in the form of sweat. If left unchecked this can cause discomfort & dramatic loss of heat away from the body. Breathable fabrics allow internal water vapour to pass through the fabric via a membrane (millions of tiny holes) whilst not allowing water (in the form of rain & snow) to penetrate inside. Even temperature regulation & greater comfort under all conditions are the real benefit of a breathable fabric.

04

Outer face fabric layer

Membrane layer An inner coating made up from millions of tiny holes big enough to allow water vapour out but too small to allow water droplets in creating a breathable yet waterproof barrier.

Inner layer Adds comfort and wicking properties to the garment. Draws moisture away from the body to the membrane layer from where it can diffuse to the outside. Can hang freely (two ply) or be laminated to the other two layers to increase durability and decrease bulk (three ply) although this is a more expensive option found on White Ops garments.

Material Technology Comfort warmth & insulation Shell outers

Critical Insulation

Simply a water & windproof outer shell. Less bulky and designed to be ‘layered up’ with a thermal base layer and fleece mid layer for warmth and insulation. Increased mobility and reduced weight for greater rider comfort. No thermal properties so must stress the need for layers.

Wadding of different weights and densities strategically placed around the garment creating warm yet highly mobile garment. Typically increased wadding in body area where warmth is required and lighter wadding in arms for increased flexibility. Normally 100 grams in the body and 60 grams in the arms

Tricot liners & anti chafe areas Soft feel Tricot fleece has been designed into specific areas where comfort is premium. All neck areas and zip guards are Tricot lined to prevent chaffing. Seat & knee areas in pants have Tricot panels for increased comfort when sitting or kneeling on cold snow and ice. Strategic inner Tricot panel usage for increased comfort and warmth. Taffeta is used in certain areas for ease of movement and when putting on and taking off jackets or pants – this stops arms & legs ‘sticking’ to garment inner.

Tricot lined pocket bags Pockets have a Tricot fleece lining for extra warmth and comfort.

Fabrics & Glossary Fully taped seams

Every seam on the garment is taped for maximum waterproofing as the tape prevents water ingress through stitching holes along seams. It is a far more labour intensive process & therefore adds considerable cost to a garment although it does deliver superior performance. For example Delta Force jacket is fully taped.

Critically taped seams

Critically taped garments have key seams taped to maximise waterproofing. The taped seams are in key areas where water ingress is likely. These include the hood, neck and shoulders. Critical seam taping offers good waterproofing performance at a more affordable price point.

Heat venting

Zips under the armpits (pit zips) and around the thigh area allow you to ‘dump’ heat and stay cool. On warm days or under excessive heat loading (when hiking etc) venting heat out and letting cool air in increases rider comfort levels. Most venting zips are strategically placed in key body heat generating areas.

Snow skirts

A snow skirt creates an internal seal around the waist preventing snow entering your jacket when you stack it in the powder. It seals you in against the snow and wind for greater comfort.

Ankle gaitors

Seals pant to boot and prevents snow ingress when hiking through deep snow and powder keeping you warm and dry.

Bar tacking

Re-enforced stitching at all key stress points to avoid rips and tears.

Pack friendly pocket & panel layout

All jackets have been designed to take into consideration riding with a pack – so pockets and zips etc still function and are placed for ease of access etc. There are plenty of external pockets for stowing all your kit.

Chamois wipe

We have included an attached chamois wipe to buff up your lenses and clean away the muck in our high end product. The Chamois is placed externally so you can clean as you go.

Music pocket & cable management

Sound system compatible – Our high end product have internal audio pockets with jack points and cable routing systems for your headphones for uninterrupted tunes on the go.

Money bags

Internal money/wallet pocket to keep your loot safe when you’re out on the hill.

Phone pocket

Stow the cell when you’re out – really useful for calling in the chopper or hooking up with the rest of your crew.

Linking system

CUFF ADJUSTMENT: Seals your wrist against the wind and snow and must be ‘glove’ compatible’ ie can be open, closed and adjusted without taking your gloves off.

Snap system allows you to link your jacket and pant together – asked for by our team riders for more protection.

Hem adjusters

Ingenious cuff, hem, or retractable lift pass – easy access and well placed for smart card access lifts – no more pulling your gloves off at the lift queue.

A shock cord adjuster running around the hem of a jacket. One handed operation (adjusters found in front pockets of most of our jackets) to close down a jacket for even more protection.

Hoods

Designed to fit well to ward against wind driven snow in stormy conditions. Can be adjusted to fit snugly around face but maintain good visibility especially when wearing gogs. Removable hoods offer greater flexibility to the rider.

Waterproof zips

Waterproof zips do not need any protection in the form of storm flaps or jetting. They seal against the snow and rain. Waterproof zips mean less bulk in a garment for increased rider performance but at a higher price point.

Storm flaps & jetted zips

Protect zip openings from the wind & snow for increased rider protection & comfort.

Lace hooks and ankle zips

Hooks that latch into your laces to stop your pants riding up when walking in deep snow. Ankle zips for easy access and boot removal – can also be worn open for a phatter look.

06

Lift pass pockets

Zip pulls

Sounds daft but zip pulls make accessing pockets with gloves on a doddle.

Belt loops

Wide loops for slinging your big leather studded belt through – more of a style thing bruva.

Zip fly

Faster access when caught short on the hill!

Seam preshaping

We cut our garments for riding hence our pants are cut with a slight crouch. Arm lift has also been cut into the underarms so when you lift your arms above your waist and shoulders the jacket will not ride up.

Anitex Technical Fabric is outstandingly water-resistant, windproof and has high levels of breathability with a specially designed hydrophillic membrane. It is extremely durable, lightweight and soft, with the hydrophillic layers transporting perspiration effectively away from the body. 1. Wind blocked

4. Perspiration vapour

2. Water repellent
