A Technology Newsletter Published Jointly by NexusTek & Zumasys

eflecting on our last 18 years in business, I am reminded of Bushnell’s Law. Coined by the founding father of the video game industry and creator of such trailblazing brands as Atari and Chuck E. Cheese, it simply says that games are “easy to learn but difficult to master.” In the early days of selling Citrix technology at Zumasys, we bent this phrase to our own needs. We’d tell customers that Citrix presentation software is easy to install but hard to configure correctly and that’s why you needed Zumasys. Running a business is the same thing. Anybody can form an LLC or a corporation. But learning how to master business (which is just a big game) – that is truly elusive! So, after just experiencing a very eventful summer during which Zumasys ultimately sold its cloud and infrastructure business to NexusTek, retaining its software assets, it’s altogether fitting that we continue to be humbled by the game of business. Any entrepreneur who tells you they have it all figured out is lying.

and the impact has been nothing short of transformative. And we are excited to have found a partner in NexusTek who shares our commitment to philanthropy and volunteerism. It’s called Conscious Capitalism. It’s not a trend or a fad – it’s a better recipe for running a business. We are evidence that it works! I encourage you to learn more about this exciting movement at www.conciouscaptalism.org. By the way, in June 2008 it was announced that Leonardo DiCaprio would portray Nolan Bushnell in the film Atari, an adaptation of Bushnell's life story. Despite its announcement, however, no such progress is made on that project. Yet.

Paul Giobbi, President of Zumasys paulg@zumasys.com

That being said, there is one place where we know we have it right. We put our stakeholders first at Zumasys—our people, our community and our clients and the more we do so, the more we are encouraged. In fact, we recently realized a monumental goal that we set for ourselves at Zumapalooza in 2012. Initially, we wanted to give away $1M through our Happyness is a Choice program by 2016. We came out of the gates strong but there were some twists and turns and delays. The game of business got in the way. It ended up taking us 5 ½ years but with two technology donations this summer to educational institutions in Providence, Rhode Island and Zambia, Africa, I am thrilled to announce that we have successfully given away $1,018,815! We could not have achieved this incredible goal without you, our valued stakeholders, and we’re sincerely grateful that you joined us on this journey. And please know that we’re not stopping here. By sharing the power of purpose, we inspire people to pursue “happyness” and redefine how business contributes to society. We may not have mastered business but Zumasys systematically sets aside 2% of its revenues every month using open book financial methods. We split those funds up between Employee Goodwill (our people) and Happyness is a Choice (our community)

. . . JUST GOT BETTER Mike Jenner

hese are exciting times for NexusTek.

For us, customers always come first. Over the past several months, we doubled down on this commitment by investing in new technology and adding to the number of highlyskilled, tenured professionals whose expertise in cyber security, cloud services, disaster recovery and collaboration will set a new standard in how businesses view and consume managed IT services. With an all-encompassing services portfolio, national infrastructure and workforce, NexusTek is addressing demand for truly endto-end IT management from a single service provider with a national footprint. NexusTek customers operate in markets that are fluid, volatile and increasingly competitive, and in which the only constant is change. Our job is to ensure we have the means and resources to protect customers from losing marketshare, and to improve business outcomes by harnessing the transformative power of technology. We take the burden of optimizing and managing complex IT environments off customers, which frees them to reallocate their time and energy towards growth.

I intentionally use the term “better” to describe our services for one important reason: best practices can always be better. There is always room for improvement, and this mantra reflects our singular focus on customers. Iconic leaders who have reached the top of their profession, share this thirst to constantly improve their craft. Even Abraham Lincoln, the man whose words shaped a nation stated, “I do not think much of a man who is not wiser today than he was yesterday.” As I look forward to attending my first Zumapalooza, I am excited to connect with, and learn from our customers, partners, employees and friends that are now part of a much larger community.

Mike Jenner, CEO of NexusTek mike.jenner@nexustek.com

Working with NexusTek brings peace of mind. Our customers know they’ve partnered with an elite managed IT services provider that has the team and breadth of technology to support every operational touchpoint. NexusTek’s success can be attributed to a company-wide team effort. People like Kristen Noftsger, who leads NexusTek’s Integrations Office team, deserve special recognition for creating a corporate culture that emphasizes customer experience. When I reflect on Kristen’s performance, the term “heroic” comes to mind. In fact, The Denver Business Journal agreed with this assessment and named her one of Denver’s top C-level executives! Community and employee engagement are essential elements for any successful business. Our philanthropic program, WOWSA, is an important part of who we are as a company; it’s about supporting our employees with more intimate and personal volunteer opportunities at home and around the world. In addition to charitable contributions, WOWSA also funds activities and events to promote “wellness” among our corporate community. Zumasys and NexusTek exemplify what it means to provide better service. Both companies are dogged in their pursuit of empowering customers with the flexibility and freedom to run their businesses efficiently and profitably, without interruption.

Encompass Eliminates Downtime with jBASE from Zumasys

In September 2018, Encompass Supply Chain Solutions announced the successful migration of Encompass’ custom ERP system to jBASE. The company also migrated its infrastructure from a co-location facility to the Zumasys cloud, now owned and operated by NexusTek. The move has helped Encompass eliminate costly downtime and streamline development for the company’s primary business applications. With its ERP application running on jBASE, Encompass can now take advantage of dramatically improved reliability and performance for batch processing and web apps. “We don’t have to worry about equipment failures like we had to before because everything is virtual now,” says Brent Blair, Vice President of IT at Encompass. “The jBASE application and the interface to our website is much more reliable than our previous solution. We haven’t had any downtime as far as our website is concerned since we cut over.” Encompass’ business success depends on the company’s customdeveloped ERP application, which feeds off its PICK MultiValue database platform. As the company’s legacy PICK database approached its end of life, it was no longer being actively supported or updated. Over time, the database became slow and unreliable, resulting in downtime for the company’s ERP system and eCommerce applications. Encompass quickly ruled out moving to SAP or Oracle. According to Blair, switching database platforms would have been too costly, risky and time consuming. Worse, the company would have had to sacrifice the ability to custom tailor its ERP application. “One of the things that makes us competitive in our market is the ability

to develop our business application around the specialized needs of our customers,” says Blair. “Moving to out-of-the-box software would have been a big loss for us.” The company considered several PICK MultiValue database solutions before deciding on jBASE from Zumasys. With jBASE, Encompass could retain its custom features with a clear path for the future. Zumasys was also the only company that could offer a truly cloud-ready database solution. “By moving to the cloud, we can now focus our resources on development instead of running hardware,” adds Blair. Today, the difference between the systems is clear. With jBASE, processing large transactions takes a fraction of the time that it once did. Processing time for end-of-day and end-of-month transactions has dropped from 3 1/2 hours to less than 1 hour, and performance for the company’s website has doubled. In addition, the system is now more reliable than ever. Adding memory or storage is as simple as an online click or a short 5-minute phone call. Software updates are automatic, so the company never has to worry about downtime for maintenance. Because all data is stored in the Switch Data Center, one of the largest and most secure data centers in the world, compliance and security audits are painless. Customers are thrilled to know their data is protected from security breaches and unwanted intrusion. “Our customers rely on us to get them the parts they need to be successful,” explains Blair. “We are actively investing in solutions to increase reliability and speed for our customers. jBASE gives us a solid foundation for innovation.”

NexusTek Cloud Services Despite the barrage of positive spin and marketing, organizations worldwide still struggle with migrating and managing enterprise workloads in the cloud. In highly-regulated markets, such as banking and healthcare, reluctance to embrace cloud environments is manifested by concerns about service providers’ ability to meet industry-mandated requirements to ensure compliance. Much of this fear is unfounded. Managed private cloud environments are attractive for businesses that are governed by strict regulations, such as HIPAA, FINRA, or PCI. There are also numerous instances when customers have other reasons for heightened data security. This is not to say that private clouds are more secure than public clouds because both deployment models are inherently safe for businesses. NexusTek Cloud Services, hosted in geographically redundant SSAE 16-certified data centers that leverage a software-defined architecture, feature a managed private cloud services portfolio that brings together storage, and compute into a single solution optimized for managing enterprise workloads in the cloud. Unfettered visibility, 24 x 7 x 365 monitoring, management and helpdesk, coupled with the hands-on support of NexusTek’s team of tenured professionals, deliver optimal performance. A managed private cloud environment offers an architecture that is purpose-built for agility and privacy. This model’s inherent redundancy, flexibility and performance, coupled with privacy of dedicated, segregated infrastructure for single tenancy in a private cloud, meet specific compliance requirements for businesses in regulated industries.

FALL 2018

The transparency and control that comes from managed private cloud service environments help organizations mitigate risk. Highprofile breaches continue to make headlines, and the need for GDPR compliance is a universal concern. With regulatory bodies like FINRA increasing scrutiny of business continuity plans, firms must protect their data no matter where it resides and vigilantly manage their IT environments. Leveraging the cloud means you have the ability to dynamically scale and contract compute, storage, and CPU as needed. Unfortunately, the reality with a lot of multitenant cloud offerings is that once you’ve committed to a specific platform, infrastructure, or application, making changes can be daunting – and expensive. Too many offerings are built with a one-size-fits-all mentality, which does not align with the needs of today’s market. We know every business has specific challenges and sudden changes in the market often necessitate adapting IT in a very short time. Our cloud services portfolio is comprehensive and offers numerous deployment models to address unique security, business, and auditing requirements. Most importantly, NexusTek Cloud Services offer the choice, flexibility and control businesses need to be agile, a pre-requisite for success.

Tom McTeer Many know Tom McTeer as simply the best AIX guru around. We know him as one of the most sought-after engineers, tasked with PICK conversions, AIX builds, wireless designs, and anything that requires a MultiValue focus, even old tape conversions. For our clients, Tom is the person who saves the day when the unthinkable happens to their PICK server. Just ask one customer in North Carolina, whose D3 server was damaged following a thunder storm and lightning strike. Tom flew across the country with a few hours’ notice to perform a company-saving D3 evacuation and converted them to The Zumasys Cloud within two days. Wilkinson Supply is still a happy jBASE and now NexusTek Cloud customer to this day.

But, how well do you actually know Tom?

Growing up in the Bakersfield, California area, Tom graduated from South High in 1970. While in high school, where he

admits that academics were not his strength, Tom found great fulfillment while working behind the scenes in the school’s drama department. Tom created the many theatre sets, and managed the lighting and audio systems for the schools many productions. After Tom graduated, he moved onto community theatre where he continued his behind-the-scenes roles, producing many of the most popular plays. After leaving the theatre, Tom took a position as a mechanic’s helper in a potato and onion Farm in Bakersfield. As the son of a gas distributor and garage owner, Tom was surrounded by mechanical expertise his whole life and the work was very natural to him. After working one season at the farm, Tom got a job in town as an appliance repairman (think Maytag Man) where he would make house calls to fix broken washing machines, refrigerators, and the state-of-the-art Amana “radar ranges” (aka microwaves) that were built into many of the kitchens at that time. It was right about this time (around 1975) that Tom first became interested in the newly available mini-computers. The bay area computer clubs were extremely excited about the newly available “Altair 8800” minicomputer kit. Tom began learning about these computers and electronics, and it instantly became a lifelong passion and hobby. Two years later, Tom joined a computer club and built an 8080 base computer which was paired with an SOL terminal. Tom, who was enrolled at Cal State Bakersfield at the time, was probably one of the first to submit his homework to his professor electronically. He did so by electronically connecting his 8080 to the Bakersfield computer lab (a Fortran machine) via an acoustically coupled modem, so he did not have to wait in line on order to sit in front of the key punch machines to type his programs. Tom got a job at the Bakersfield School district, thanks to his connections at his former high school. While there, the district partnered with Pacific Telephone to create a telephone operator ROP program. The instructor for this program was Glynette Osburn (the future Mrs. McTeer) who was a phone operator at the time. After the program was closed, Glynette went back to the phone company and she and Tom were married in 1979.

Tom and his beloved Golden Retrievers

Where does PICK/ MultiValue enter the equation? Right about 1980, when Tom’s brother-in-law, who worked for an Irvine-based fastener company, purchased a PICK system running on an Evolution computer. Ahead of his time, his brother began selling time on his PICK system to other businesses. They would rent this time and use the system for everything from printing reports to processing payroll. The company grew, and eventually they needed someone to change the reel-to-reel backups each evening. The person they hired was a school teacher from Newport Christian, named Joe Cupp, who later became the co-founder of Zumasys. Tom was so enamored with computers, he found himself working for PICK Systems (now Rocket Software) where he was a computer assembler and a QA engineer, troubleshooting the wire-wrapped circuit boards. After working with PICK Systems for a couple of years, the company decided to get out of the hardware business and began licensing their software to many hardware manufacturers. Their hardware rights were sold to Evolution, and Tom began working for them in 1982. Soon, IBM came into the mainstream and Evolution dissolved. Tom immediately realized the hardware maintenance and support void this left for the many companies running on PICK and The Computer Clinic was born. Tom, along with several former PICK Systems and Evolution Computer colleagues, began purchasing hardware from companies that had transitioned off of PICK and soon became the go-to company for replacement hardware and parts.

Fast forward a few years and the Zumasys roots began... Joe Cupp went on to found a computer hardware distributor called Orion Pacific. Joe would use Tom and The Computer Clinic to consult on tape conversion and hardware migration projects. Joe would sell the hardware and Tom would sell the tape drives. In fact, one of his first clients was Acorn Paper, where current HaaS IT manager Jerry Morales worked on a SCO system. Today HaaS remains a steadfast NexusTek Client. Paul Giobbi was working for JBS (Jones Business Systems) in Houston, Texas (which acquired Orion Pacific in 1997), selling PICK licenses. Eventually, when PICK Systems pulled their distributor license arrangements back in-house, Paul and Joe negotiated a buy-out of the end-user portion of the business from JBS, turning it into Zumasys, Inc. After relocating Zumasys to California, the company acquired The Computer Clinic, and Tom joined the firm in 2001, becoming the 5th employee – behind Paul, Joe, Tiffaney, and our first engineer, Jay Otto. Since joining forces, Tom has travelled the globe installing, upgrading, and saving MultiValue systems and creating life-long relationships and partnerships along the way. Tom’s pursuits have taken him to China and Germany in support of the MeadWestvaco companies and most recently to England in support of a D3 client. This tradition didn’t skip a beat as Tom became part of the NexusTek team in June, 2018. Collectively, as one of our most tenured employees, Tom was the first to travel internationally as part of the International Travel Incentive. He and his wife Glynette and son Quentin traveled to Australia in 2010, which has now become his favorite destination. Zumasys and NexusTek would not be where they are today without the contributions of people like Tom McTeer. We collectively send Tom a HUGE thank you from the entire team and we congratulate him on his 17th anniversary!

What is PICK now? Pick databases may not be the most well known but our customers are devout about the data model and the applications that they have built on this proven technology.

According to Forbes Magazine, MultiValue databases fit into the NoSQL category and have unique features. MultiValue databases handle certain data structures that are just a little too complex for conventional relational databases. Unlike relational databases, MultiValue databases can assign more than one value to a single attribute. A cell (attribute) in a MultiValue database may contain an array of values.

Zumasys’ flagship product is jBASE, a proven NoSQL database and application platform used by the largest international banks in the world. jBASE has broader appeal to modern application developers because programs run directly on the underlying operating system (Windows, Linux or AIX). Zumasys also distributes OpenQM, the most cost effective Pick database in the market. by jBASE

Created by Martin Phillips, OpenQM wins continual praises for its scalability and its ever-expanding feature list, which is driven directly by customer feedback.

In plain English, the applications running on Pick databases are highly customizable and are continually modified and tuned to the exact needs of an industry and the customers who run them. Pick systems are business-critical and extremely difficult to replace, but they’re often dated in their look and feel. Pick developers are in short supply and many are approaching retirement age. Soon companies with Pick systems will have a hard time finding people willing or able to program for them, which is where our developers, our database platform and our training partnership with Ivy Tech Community College come into play. Our closest competition has simply stopped innovating and does not provide programming services, which creates growing demand for Zumasys.
