The Power of Purpose WHY ARE WE IN BUSINESS?

his is the question that we must all ask ourselves at some point. Every manager, every executive, every worker. We are all seeking purpose and meaning in our work—especially since we spend nearly 60% of our awake time on the job. But, purpose can be elusive in the business realm, where less than 15% of people feel engaged in their jobs. Patagonia, the outdoor clothing and climbing gear company, found itself at a crossroads in the early 90s. Started by Yvon Chouinard, a mountain climber and self-proclaimed “juvenile delinquent,” Patagonia had grown into a business with eight autonomous product divisions and a level of complexity that vexed their management team for years. Finally, Chouinard took his team offsite to seek the advice of Dr. Michael Kami, who had run strategic planning for IBM, Xerox and Harley Davidson. Instead of providing answers, Dr. Kami asked them a simple question: Why are you in business?

Tom Mendoza helped establish the culture that allowed NetApp, a leader in storage technology, to be ranked #1 on Fortune Magazine’s 100 Best Companies to Work For. A frequent speaker on corporate culture, the Vice Chairman of NetApp shared his story during his keynote address at Zumapalooza 2008. He talked about what drove him to achieve and build NetApp into a company with $10B market capitalization. His answer was simple: he worked to honor his immigrant father. Tom built a career on exalting others. Read his compelling story on page 20. Bert Jacobs, the co-founder and Chief Executive Optimist of the Life is Good Company, discovered his purpose while traveling the East Coast in the “Starship Enterprise,” the dilapidated minivan that he and his brother sold t-shirts from in their early 20s. One day, lightning struck. The Jacobs brothers were discussing the endless negativity they saw in newspapers—the pessimism was unrelenting. To combat this, they had a party and created Jake, the iconic stick figure hero with the contagious smile. Jake popped up on apparel, they trademarked the phrase "Life is Good" and their mission became to spread the power of optimism. When I first heard Jacobs speak, I had been on a mission to better understand Zumasys’ purpose. What was our “true north” as a business? We had great growth, a decent culture and we were all enjoying ourselves—yet it felt like something was missing. I thought we could do more to connect people to a greater mission. 2

Patagonia’s mission is to use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis.

Happyness is a Choice was the answer. This program allocates a percentage of your purchases with Zumasys and directs them to people and organizations in need. As we close in our $1M giving goal, we are thrilled and honored to welcome Bert Jacobs as our keynote speaker at Zumapalooza 2017. Life is Good became the $100M lifestyle brand that we all know today by donating 10% of its net profits to help kids. Their story is inspiring and Jacobs was a big part of the motivation behind Happyness is a Choice.

So, why are we in business? Is it because we really love building infrastructure and moving people to the Cloud? Well, yes, actually. IT isn’t easy. You don’t do it unless you absolutely love it. And Zumasys engineers are passionate about technology! But it is so much more than that. We’ve learned that we are in the business of changing lives—impacting and influencing our customers, our employees, and our community. And to do that, I’m not ashamed to say--we need to be successful, we need to grow and we need to make money. But we do it while remaining squarely focused on your IT needs and keeping you out in front of technology.

Tom Mendoza’s mission is to honor others through his work.

We are committed to growing Zumasys in a responsible way. They call it conscious capitalism and if you've ever walked into Whole Foods or The Container Store you’re experiencing the benefits. These companies choose to believe in the innate potential of business to make a positive impact on human beings, the world and the causes that are important to them. And they grow faster as a result. Putting purpose and people before profits ultimately benefits us all. And that is why we are in business.

Paul Giobbi, President of Zumasys

Life is Good’s mission is to spread the power of optimism and to help kids in need.

Storyteller’s Ethos Giving Program by Ananya and Brett Ridenour It has always been a dream for Zumasys employee, Ananya Ridenour and her husband Brett to publish a novel. This year, the husband and wife team will achieve that dream with the publication of their first novel, Skipping Stones. Ananya and Brett’s passion for writing is a collaboration of mutual support for their ideas and dreams. After completing their novel, the couple both agreed that they wanted to do something to give back to the community. As a result, Ananya and Brett have created a giving program named Storyteller’s Ethos. Modeled after Zumasys’ Happyness is a Choice program, Storyteller’s Ethos will donate a portion of proceeds from the couple’s novels to selected organizations, especially programs that encourage literacy and education. Happyness is a Choice is excited to support Ananya and Brett in their passion for writing and their enthusiasm to share that gift with others.

Looking for Inspiration? Small Steps Can Create Big Impact With Special Guests: Sarah Vienna and Andreea Mondoc from FFR Tuesday, May 16th | 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM

Get to Know:

What inspired you to join Zumasys? What is your technology background?

Where do you see the market going for Zumasys and its customers?

I started in this industry at an early age. I was in my teens when I first started working at Lechters Housewares company. Throughout my career, I’ve been focused on infrastructure and delivering solutions that help customers solve important challenges.

The technology industry is very competitive because it changes so rapidly. By the time you think you understand any one technology, the industry has moved on to something else. It’s like buying a TV—by the time you walk out the door with one, there’s already something bigger and better on the market.

When I first sat down with Zumasys, I instantly felt a connection. The culture is very inspiring, but I was also really intrigued by Zumasys’ IP—particularly around jBASE. The acquisition of jBASE got me excited because it was so bold and forward-thinking. It’s a niche. It’s unique. I thought: I want to be working with people who have such a strong vision for where they want to lead an industry.

What do you like most about your job?

So it’s the perfect storm: you’ve got incredible people and a strong technology vision. When they come together, we can do amazing things for our customers. That was intriguing to me.

So the question is, what is the next evolution? I think we’re seeing a major influence from personal, consumer products like smart phones and tablets. People are now able to work from anywhere, at any time. Zumasys is already enabling this level of connectivity with some of the strategic acquisitions we’ve made in the software space. We’re working very hard to ensure that we’re aligning ourselves to what the future holds and what the next generation of consumers are going to want to buy.

What have your first six months at Zumasys been like?

What are the biggest challenges facing your customers?

I would describe it as your standard “drinking from a fire hose” experience, but it’s been a lot of fun. I’ve spent a lot of my time getting to know our team and our customers and learning how Zumasys does business. I am really excited about what Zumasys is doing in the software space. We have our own, unique product. We’re not only responsible for selling it to customers, but also for developing it and enhancing it to fit their needs.

Organizations today are looking for technology partners that they can trust to stay focused on the best interests of their business. They need someone who will listen to them and understand not just their current problems, but where they want to be in two years, five years, or even ten years from now.

One of the highlights has been participating at Zumasys' Hosted User Group event. I’m based in Atlanta, so it was great to spend more time with the Zumasys team and some of our customers in person. After Paul’s keynote on Happyness is a Choice and our work with Firm Foundations Romania, I stood outside and was blown away by just how excited and inspired everyone was coming out of the event. I’ve never had that experience before with any other company. I could tell that the customers came away with a real sense of connection to Zumasys and what we stand for. I did too. 8

S U M MER 2017

Establishing that relationship is critical. Organizations want to partner with people who are just as concerned about their success as they are. That’s where Zumasys stands out from others in our space. Of course, the value of our technology and the quality of our support are important, but we are really about responding to real-time challenges and helping customers develop strategies for the future.

I’m a big fan of innovation. Our customers are always looking for ways to merge business with IT. The only way to achieve this convergence is with innovation. Each customer has unique needs, business requirements, and success goals. Innovation is about challenging ourselves to improve. At Zumasys, we must always be ready to bring innovation to our clients. I love that Zumasys lets me be idealistic and creative. I’m free to be innovative with our customers. This flexibility allows me to think outside the box and develop solutions for their businesses leveraging our technology. I get a lot out of sitting with our customers, listening to their challenges and goals, and proposing ideas that can directly improve the overall state of their organization. This freedom of creativity is what makes my job exciting. Getting in front of customers and providing solutions is a true passion for me. I love helping them bridge the gap between business and IT. I think it is a major success when we can improve the perception of IT at an organization. What do you do when you’re not at work? When I’m not at work, the first thing I want to do is spend time with my family. I love being involved with my kids and all their different activities. I also enjoy hiking. The peace and tranquility you get when you’re out in nature is really important to me, particularly in this crazy world we live in. My current passion is reading biographies and understanding how people overcome personal challenges. I believe we should all be constantly challenging ourselves. If you want to succeed, you should surround yourself with people who challenge you to improve. Never take the easy road.

SOFTWARE AS A SERVICE The fastest growing segment of Zumasys' cloud business is with Independent Software Vendors (ISVs). ISVs have robust applications that have dominated their vertical markets for years but they need to compete with the growing popularity of Software as a Service (SaaS) vendors such as NetSuite, Xero, and Salesforce. The SaaS delivery will significantly outpace traditional software product delivery, growing nearly five times faster than the traditional software markets per IDC. In fact, by 2019, this cloud software model will account for $1 of every $4.59 spent on software. In this section, we explore how Zumasys helped two veteran software vendors embrace the Cloud and Software as a Service as a delivery model for their applications.

In 2016, Ontario Systems, a leading revenue cycle management (RCM) and accounts receivable management (ARM) software and services provider, acquired Columbia Ultimate Business Systems (CUBS™). These two market experts came together, strengthened their product presence and have incredible momentum with The Zumasys Cloud.

Here’s what a Columbia Ultimate customer is saying about his experience: Interview with Dave Ketzenberger I run a small office, not big enough to hire a separate IT person. I was the IT person. Our server was about 10 years old and it was custom built and I inherited it and its headaches. During the last two years, the system started acting up with freezing or disconnecting sessions that a collector had been utilizing. I was faced with either buying and installing a new server or pursue this new-fangled "hosted server" stuff. Over the years, I've had to learn WAY too much about servers. I'm in the collections business—not the computer industry. I could never feel comfortable leaving for vacations as no one else knew what I knew about any computer or server-related issues that may have come up in my absence.

– Dave Ketzenberger President, Pono Ventures/ AR Recovery

Zumasys was the perfect solution. Because of their partnership with Columbia Ultimate, I felt confident that they would work with each other and keep me out of the finger pointing loop. Not so with other third-party hosted server companies. I've gone on vacation, worry-free, two times now. Just in case, I left Zumasys' tech support phone number with the person in charge. It felt great knowing that the problems are theirs to handle, not mine. I haven't even logged onto my Zumasys server in months. It just goes. It's like I don't even have a server anymore. I've stopped doing backups as Zumasys' mirroring and redundancy has made that practice obsolete. My server is mirrored on one site and there is a completely different site that has my server running where that is mirrored as well. That would be four live copies at the ready. Zumasys has always been accessible and ready to handle any questions I had throughout the transition. It was a scary move, but I have absolutely no regrets. Zumasys will do right by you. 11

OPENQM: A Seamless Transition Interview with Vic Watson, CEO of DSI Solutions Who is DSI and what do you do? DSI is a software supplier to the commercial vehicle industry. Our customers are primarily retailers and repair companies for trucks, trailers, tractors, and other heavy equipment. Customers use our DSI business management software to manage nearly every aspect of their operations, including accounting, parts and inventory management, point of sale, and repair order management, as well as leasing and rentals.

What were some of the challenges with your previous MultiValue system? Our DSI software had been running on Pick for years. Our main problem was that Pick wasn’t able to keep up with the needs of our customers. Prices were rising but we weren’t seeing a lot of product development. Customers often had issues with the old license manager and the general stability of the product. Multi-day outages were common, and our customers were fed up with having to pay high annual maintenance fees on unreliable systems. It was a frustrating situation with no real end in sight.

What attracted you to OpenQM and Zumasys? Our history with Zumasys goes way back— my business partner and Paul Giobbi have known each other for years. We’re also long-time AccuTerm users, and have been Zumasys customers since AccuTerm was acquired by Zumasys a few years ago. We started to think about moving to OpenQM, but we didn’t quite have the

bandwidth to take on the task by ourselves. We wanted to be confident that we could provide a smooth transition for our 6,000+ users. When Zumasys became an OpenQM distributor, we knew we had a partner we could trust to deliver a stable, supported solution. They provide a lot of resources that we wouldn’t have if we implemented OpenQM on our own. And Zumasys is continuing to invest in OpenQM, so we are seeing regular improvements that we can use to build a better product for our customers. The cost savings and performance improvements of OpenQM enable us to be much more competitive with companies using less-expensive databases. With OpenQM, it costs 50% less to add users, so our customers can scale more affordably. When we buy licenses, we don’t have to pass that cost on to our customers since it’s part of the regular maintenance fee. Because OpenQM runs the database without using a Virtual Machine Environment (VME), operations also run much faster.

What was the migration to OpenQM like? Transitioning IT systems is like changing your foundation. You’ve got to lift the entire house up, pour new concrete, and put it back down. If the bolts aren’t all in the right place, you’re going to have problems. We had regular meetings with the Zumasys Project Management Team and our programmers to make sure all those bolts were lined up.

Zumasys really did everything possible to make sure our concerns were addressed so that the transition was seamless to our users. We were all on the same team, doing the same work to accomplish the same goal. Even though it seemed like a monumental task, it really wasn’t that big of a deal on the technical side.

What are some of the benefits of OpenQM to your business and your customers? Everything we were hoping for with OpenQM has come to pass. We’ve been able to deliver all the benefits of the cloud in a cost-effective way for our customers. The quality of the product from Zumasys is phenomenally stable. It’s practically bulletproof. And we didn’t have to wait for our investment to start paying off—we started seeing ROI within 12 months of implementing the product. The best part is, our customers get a faster, more stable product, and it didn’t cost them a penny more. That makes them happy. Zumasys has been a great partner for us. We were really impressed with Zumasys’ website and marketing, and they offered to help us improve in those areas. They relaunched our website and helped us create some fantastic branded content. We’ve sold new systems just because of our new website, and we’re getting regular contacts through the website all the time. I’ve even had compliments from my competition. I appreciate that Zumasys is so focused on our success.

Veeam Backup for Office 365

Nimble Cloud Volumes

The “software-defined wide area network” is one of the more recent additions to the virtual data center. The Internet is a powerful tool—but in the hands of a subpar ISP, it can also be extremely frustrating and too often the cause of lost productivity. In other words, your remote branches and cloud applications are only as good as the connectivity between them. Redundant connectivity is a great way to combat the failure of an ISP, especially if the circuits are from different providers or have dissimilar connection types. However, handling complicated routing failover or having very expensive private connections such as MPLS or VPLS can add management overhead.

Organizations everywhere are rapidly adopting Office 365. But here’s something to keep in mind: With any migration to Software as a Service, like Office 365, you must give some amount of control to the application provider themselves. And while they may provide backups, they may not have a plan in place for restores. This is especially true for email. What happens when you need a copy of all that data back in your control?

Nimble is placing a big bet on cloud-ready storage. Still in beta but due later this year, Nimble Cloud Volumes will provide independent storage for both Azure and AWS. These are not software layers sitting on top of S3 or Azure block storage, but fully privatized Nimble storage devices effectively adjacent to the compute power of those two hyperscalers.

Citrix’s NetScaler SD-WAN is designed to reduce the complexity of multiple connections by providing fully automated bandwidth aggregation and failover handling. The key to this ability is establishing a single virtualized path between sites that consists of all your internet and private circuit providers. In some cases, the more expensive MPLS circuits can be removed entirely in favor of standard internet connections, which can provide a real cost savings to the business. SD-WAN is a new but fast-growing segment of infrastructure. If your company is very distributed with many branch offices, this is something to watch.

If you’re an existing customer of Veeam Backup and Recovery, you may also be used to the absolute simplicity of per-item recovery for Exchange mailboxes, and the thought of “going backward” may be too great a loss. Veeam Backup for Office 365 solves that problem, allowing you to retain all the rapid recovery capabilities, e-Discovery, and even hybrid Exchange capability for simple per-user subscription licensing. As of today, existing Veeam customers may be eligible for a free one-year trial.

Here’s why that’s exciting: It will allow you to empower your cloud VMs with Nimble’s massive Infosight Predictive Analytics engine to provide unprecedented storage reporting and awareness in cloud. It will also allow for seamless migration between AWS and Azure without having to migrate storage. Eventually, it will provide on-prem and cloud migration as well. Existing Nimble users will benefit from a familiar storage management interface and actions. All this for cloud-friendly, per-GB subscription pricing.

everal years ago, tom mendoza, the Chairman of NetApp, shared his powerful personal testimony at Zumapalooza. He talked at length about why he worked so hard to build NetApp into the $5B storage technology leader that it is today and what drove him to achieve such success.

His answer was simple: he worked to honor his father. He worked to make the most of the opportunities that he had been given—and he never stopped. Hearing Tom’s testimony was a powerful moment for me. I spend a lot of time thinking about what drives people and how to motivate them to achieve as much as they can in their careers.

So, here’s my question: Whom do you honor in your work? Who motivates you to get up in the morning and try harder than you did the day before? One of my motivations is the freckle-faced boy you see below. This boy is now 10 years old. He has never met me (that he can remember) and, because he now lives in Texas, I only get to see him through an occasional photo posted online by his mother. This special kid is Jay Otto, Jr., the son of Zumasys’ very first employee. His father, Jay Otto, was a humble, selfless, capable engineer whom many of our customers still remember to this day. Jay loved ski patrol, everything Disneyland and was always willing to help a customer or coworker. He passed away 10 years ago at the age of 37. Losing Jay was a devastating event for our young company. Jay met his wife Barbie while working together in tech services at Zumasys. After being eternally single, Jay fell deeply in love. They got married, Jay became a wonderful father to Barbie’s three children, and Barbie was pregnant before Jay was re-diagnosed with Melanoma, which took his life less than a year later. Whether they are conscious of it or not, everyone at Zumasys honors Jay each and every day they come to work. We honor him with more than just a placard in The Nerdery West, the memorial and meeting room just off our lobby in Irvine. We honor him through the customers that we choose to serve and

how we serve them—many of which are the same ones that Jay supported a decade ago. I know that Jay would be proud of the nearly 100 employees who call Zumasys home. He would appreciate their work ethic, their selflessness and their dedication to others. Jay always had a passion for education. So, when we realized that Jay Jr. was going to grow up without his father, the Zumasys network of like-minded people sprang into action. With the help of our employees, our customers, our vendors and our families, we raised more than $30,000 in just a few weeks. We started the Jay Jr. College Fund and brought honor to the individual who had done so much to get Zumasys off the ground. You could call this college fund our first Happyness is a Choice fundraiser. It would take us five more years before we actually formalized it as a program, but it all goes back to Jay Jr. and his Dad’s desire to see him go to college one day. As you go about your day today, consider taking a moment to think about whom you are honoring and how. Having a strong vision or purpose in your career can be a powerful driver. Choosing to create positive memories is something we all have the power to do.

Vice Chairman of NetApp

Tom was responsible for the worldwide sales for NetApp from 1994-2000 as NetApp grew from 0-$1B in revenue. Tom was President of NetApp from 2000-2008 during which NetApp survived the dot com bust and grew from $1B to $3.3B in revenue. Tom was named Vice Chairman in 2008. Since the beginning of his tenure with NetApp, Tom has been instrumental in developing and nurturing NetApp's globally recognized culture.

Few people go into tech with inherited wealth. Most people are trying to make an opportunity for themselves. In my particular case, both of my parents were children of immigrants. I grew up in a one-bedroom apartment in New York until I was six. Three kids, one room, no hot water. Eventually, my dad saved enough money to buy a house more than 52 miles outside of the City—the very last stop on the train line. He spent two hours each day on the train commuting to the city just so we could have a house. And despite a two-hour commute, my father never missed one of my Little League games. There was never any doubt what was most important in his life. I believe there are two big motivators in life: One is to prove someone who supported you right, the other is to prove someone who didn’t support you wrong. The guiding principle in my life was to make my dad proud. That’s how I found myself where I am today.

Like I said, you very rarely find people in technology who came from wealth. If you’re like most people that I’ve met in tech, you have someone like my dad in your background. Someone who scrapped and fought to give you the best opportunities. What if they could see where you are right now—where you work and how you live? How proud would they be? Forget about anything other than to make sure that you don’t let them down. That you live your life and give it everything you have with the opportunities you’ve been given so that five, ten years from now they would still be proud. I have faith that if you do that, things will work out well. I have often been asked, "Did you ever think that NetApp would be so successful?" I always say, "No, but I thought it would be something that we would be proud of the rest of our lives."

The best protection for your network is multiple layers of security. AppRiver’s layered defense solutions make your company a much harder target for hackers and data thieves.
