ROSCOE VILLAGE HOUSE

Duplex to Single family home conversion We converted this brownstone duplex into a luxury single family, 6 bed, 5 bath, 5,000 SF home. The open floor plan is responsive to modern lifestyles and, in order to integrate the updated plan with the original aesthetic of the house, transitional millwork moldings, wainscotting, and coffered ceilings were used. A skylight above the grand staircase leads to an attic playroom and roof deck.

LIGHT CLAY HOUSE

DESIGN: The family envisioned a home that is integrated with the land that it is built of. Adjacent to the White Salmon River, the house is open to the woodland setting to welcome the public nature of the family’s whitewater rafting business while maintaining discrete family spaces. The first floor is divided into business and family halves by the main entry with sliding art panels as unifiers or dividors of space. Designed as either a two bedroom with a playroom or a three bedroom, the second floor changes with the family’s needs.

CONSTRUCTION: Rich in raw materials, the land provided the clay for the “leichtlehmbau” envelope system that originated in Germany and was adapted for American building techniques. Slightly modified 2x6 framing accomodates a 12” thick mix of clay and straw tha is refined using tumblers that fit in standard builder’s pickups. Construction was conceived of as community event, with neighbors helping tamp the clay+straw mixture that is poured into temporary forms to create the Light Clay Wall system.

HABITAT

Using interated design, we created a viable sustainability strategy for the 5 block historic site in downtown Portland. We aimed high by reaching to meet the 2030 Challenge of net zero energy and water consumption within 15 years. I was responsible for authoring the sustainbility chapter of the master plan, setting the project target, and coordinating the integrated design approach among stakeholders. I identified and researching technologies to support the ambitious goal, conscious of what the market would bear.

Sitting across downtown on a hill, the Rose Quarter offers breathtaking views of Portland and the mountains beyond. At a pinch point between two sides of the city and home to three mass gathering venues, the site is ideal for a landmark urban gateway. Multiple transit types and lines cross the site, as do cyclists entering downtown from the east half of Portland. The Rose Qurater is in solid need of clear circulation patterns, pedestrian scale design, and small businesses to eliven the site 24/7.

Imagine a global greenway that allows people to travel the world without stepping on concrete. This urban planning competition entry explores that possibility by envisioning an international, unpaved greenway in tandem with a high speed rail line. People can travel in a natural setting and, when they need to connect with civilization, jump on the train at the next station. The focal point of the design is the multi modal transit station alongside the Willamette River at the Rose Quarter.

In the city, the greenway becomes a regional water park and cycling route, culminating in a piazza, waterfront park, marina, and multi-modal transit station at the Wilamette River. Small scale buildings are interspersed into the district to attract local businesses and circulation paths for the cyclists, autos, and mass transit that currently traverse the site are well defined and easy to navigate.

Valley between towers

Surrounded by a lush landscape, the mixed use development in the South Waterfront area of Portland integrates nature with the envelope system wherever possible. As seen from residential balconies above, the garage entry forms a “valley between the two towers with a continuous swath of green unifying the semi-private courtyard with the streetscape beyond. Feasibility studies of living surfaces were conducted for various building planes.

Historic Art Deco Stone Facade Restoration Designed 1928, completed 1941, the General Jones Armory was the first to be named after an African American. Our task of restoring this Historic Landmark art deco facade was all the more enchanting because Steven Speilberg rented the facility during the month of my site analysis, built a movie set inside of the armory and was filming “The Road To Purdition there.

GJ

To develop construction documents, I inspected the facade of this building alongside an experienced mason to discern structural failures to the steel frame and document distress conditions without removing the stone. Construction details were drawn based on an in-depth analysis of this and similar buildings.
