Why do people insist not to extend lease deed Showkat Shah Srinagar, October 13: Spread over one lac kanals of land, with abundance of natural beauty and thousands of beautiful trees in its lap, the Toas Maidan once a forgotten meadow has suddenly hit the headlines of the vernacular press for quite some time now. Dating back to 1964, the meadow was taken over by the army on lease for its usage. The place has a lot of vitality and importance due to its geographical and historical situation. Once used as a shortest track to travel to Poonch, some years back, it was under active consideration of state govt. to construct a road between Poonch and Budgam passing through this gifted meadow but the proposal did not go through due to economic constraints. Toas Maidan is situated in Khag area of Budgam District some 52 kms from the district headquarters. The army since its takeover has used the place for training purposes in the shape of a firing range. As is the case in the entire world, the population has grown many fold and the earth mother is shrinking day by day so has happened in the case of Toas Maidan where the population in
the surroundings consisting of mostly nomads has grown from hundreds to thousands. It is because of this that habitations have expanded and new tiny hamlets have come into existence. The villages within the vicinity are Satharan, Drang, Khankah, Poonchiwala, Jamagali, Roya Kani, Shala Kanni, Shupnag. On one side, the population has increased and on the other side, the activities of the army have also gone up to an extent which has become intolerable for the local populace as well as to nature and its flora- fauna. Pentavalent vaccine not responsible for infant deaths: Taj Facts would be made public: Sharma
Srinagar, October 13: Minister for Medical Education Taj Mohi-u-Din Sunday said that Pentavalent vaccine is not fake and it may not be the sole reason for infant deaths. “Those who attribute deaths to this vaccine should know it is not fake but supplied by the Government of India and it is used all over country. There may be other reasons for infant deaths which need to be investigated,” Taj told Sinagar based news gathering agency CNS adding that no adverse reactions from Pantavalent was reported till now. He said that five-member
union Health Ministry team is assisting investigations into the death of infants and we are waiting for their report. Meanwhile, Director
Family Welfare, Dr Baldev Sharma told CNS that after collecting samples and details from Children Hospital Srinagar, the five-member team visited Shopian,
Govt unleashing terror on Kashmiri Muslim in Ladakh: Malik Srinagar, October 13: Chairman JKLF Mohammad Yasin Malik has strongly condemned ‘the brutal assault on the lives, properties and shops of Kashmiri Muslims in Leh Ladakh by the government’. In a statement issued to KNS, Malik has termed the incident as ‘brutal use of state power against poor traders who are earning their bread and butter in Ladakh’. Malik has said that first rulers locked their business and now their shops have been demolished and as such these people have been turned to poverty by rulers. According to Front statement received by KNS, Malik has said that even forces unleashed a reign of terror on the Muslims of Kargil and Ladakh who day before took out a protest march in
favor of their Kashmiri brethren in Leh. “Police cane charged and arrested many people and has terrorized the whole Muslim community in Ladakh region,” Malik said adding that Kashmiri Muslims being part and parcel of these ‘terrorized’ brethren stand with them in this hour of need and protest on this state terrorism in strong words. Meanwhile a joint meeting of JKLF Islamabad and JKLF Kulgam was held today led by senior JKLF leader Mushtaq Ajmal, the meeting was attended by Mohammad Ishaq Ganai( District President Islamabad), Abdul Sattar( District president Kulgam) along with other office bearers Ghulam Qadir Haider, Assadullah, Nazir Ahmad and Showkat Ahmad Bhat and others. Baramulla and Budgam on Sunday. “So far we have not found Pentavalent the cause of infant deaths. After thorough investigations we would made the facts public,” Sharma said. He said if somebody is terming Pantavalent vaccine responsible for the deaths in his hospital, that would be his assessment and till it is not scientifically proved, we can’t describe the said vaccine as fake and lethal for children. Pertinently, Pentavalent vaccine, also known as Easy-Five, is given to protect infants from hepatitis-B, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis and Hib (haemophilus influenzae type-b).
ing to Zabarwan Times allege that over 200 persons have been eaten by the shelling and firing so far and dozens have become handicapped due to the stray bullets, artillery and mortar shells falling at different directions. It is because of this that people call it now ‘Mout Ka Maidan’ (Meadow of Death) instead of Toas Maidan. It is an apathy that earlier the army used to pay compensation to the kith and kin of those who got killed but now according to villagers this too has been stopped. In addition to this, hundreds of tree in the surrounding
forests have either dried up totally as the firing has played havoc with the nature or have suffered extensive damage. Now the question arises as to what should be done because army will insist for extension of lease which is expiring in July 2014 and the locals who claim wide spread devastation to life and property may become more vociferous to demand the closure of firing range and also insist not to extend the lease further. If one goes by their claims, several houses have developed cracks, several have been rendered useless for residential
Why are killers of my son being protected? Asks late Moulana Showkat’s mother
Accuses Geelani of double-speaking; criticizes JeAH leadership’s inaction Srinagar, October 13: The mother of Moulana Showkat Ahmad Shah former president of Jamiat-e-Ahlihadees (JeAH) who was killed two years ago in an explosion has expressed anguish and astonishment over the statements of some separatist leaders including Syed Ali Shah Geelani allegedly supporting the culprits. In a statement issued to KNS, the mother of late Moulana while referring to few statements published in many daily newspapers of Kashmir today has said that Geelani has mixed the name
of two ‘killers Javed Munshi Billa Papa and Nisar khan’ among the names of some political prisoners calling for their early release. It may be recalled that Moulana Showkat was killed in an explosion outside Jamia Masjid Maisuma on April 8, 2011 just when he was entering the mosque. The ailing mother of the deceased Moulana has said: “When her son got killed all the separatist parties including that of Geelani jointly investigated the matter and with the help of militants came out with the names of those who conspired and killed her son.”
115 killed, over 100 injured in Madhya Pradesh temple stampede Bhopal, October 13: At least 115 pilgrims, including women and children were killed and more than 100 injured in a stampede on narrow bridge to the historic Ratangarh temple in Datia district of Madhya Pradesh on Sunday. This is shocking rerun of the 2006 tragedy at the same site when 50 pilgrims were washed away. The bridge over the swollen Sindh river, which leads to the temple was chock-a-block with over
purposes and many people have either shifted to safer zones or are considering to do it to save their life and property. Now the govt. should sit with the top brass of army to find out an alternative if really Tosha-Maidan has become a health hazard besides dangerous for this one lac kanals of meadow where otherwise thousands of tourists would venture if developed as a Tourist resort. The army had already some other firing range where the activities of Tosha Maidan can be shifted. It will help the image See Toas Maidan on Pg. 7
The statement issued to KNS, added that this was like a history created as first time unknown killers got exposed and arrested. “After this these leaders including Geelani sahib came to console me and I still remember the words of Geelani sahib who drawing similarities between the killings of our great Khulfa I Rashideen (RAH) said that Showkat sahib was killed like those Khulafa.” She has added that today after reading Geelani’s statement she wants to ask him about his double speaks. “They said tainted people are among those who killed Showkat

sahib, how and why Geelani sahib is dubbing them as Mujahid now. In the same press statement Geelani sahib has also mentioned the name of one who killed Shaheed Millat Moulana Mohammad Farooq also. If this is what they believe in then I may ask these leaders why they visit the families of those killed and shed tears,” she has said in a statement received by KNS. United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) has shown its inability to persuade Government of India as well as Jammu and Kashmir to allow the screening of ‘Ocean of Tears’ a documentary depicting violence on Kashmiri women from Government Forces. “UNHRC Geneva has registered your complaint under reference number COM-13-0973. We have
studied your complaint and have assessed it as appropriate, but we helpless.” This response was given by the Commission to film maker Bilal Jan who had asked UNHRC to intervene and persuade Government of Jammu and Kashmir and India to allow the screening of his 27 minute documentary. Cyclone Phailin kills 14, leaves trail of destruction Odisha, October 13: Fourteen people were killed in cyclone Phailin which lashed India's east coast over the weekend and caused widespread destruction, a top disaster official said on Sunday. "There are 13 deaths in Orissa and one death reported in Andhra Pradesh and so we have been able to... (keep) the death toll to a bare minimum," vice-chairman of the
National Disaster Management Authority Marri Shashidhar Reddy told reporters. Reddy said relief and rescue operations were in full swing after the cyclone made landfall on Saturday night, leaving a trail of destruction in the states of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. of the army to be bettered as people friendly and also to save this beautiful meadow which is one of the most beautiful gifts of nature to the people of J&K. the confrontations will lead nowhere, these will create further wide between the govt. and the people and also will provide fodder for those who are always in search to take advantage of the such issues. The lease which was given in 1964 was enacted in particular conditions and now the conditions have changed, the circumstances are different and the political atmosphere is volatile. When we talk of aspirations of the people in a democratic set up, then whether it is army or any other organ of the govt., they should respect the sentiments of the people and should not make such issues as point of prestige. No action or situation which harms or damages the interests of the people is allowed by the constitution of India, so no one should go against the spirit of law of the land and nobody’s actions even if vital for the country should cause any inconvenience to the people in general. The state govt. should also come out with a clean policy and should stop hide and seek. If a senior leader of NC Dr. Mustafa Kamal demands that the lease should not be extended, then it should be taken as policy statement of the govt. which is lead by his nephew Omar Abdullah. The govt. should approach the central govt. and the Defence Ministry and take a decision acceptable to all stake holders before Toas Maidan becomes another political bomb-shell.
not hurt their hearts and souls. She has added that it is very important to draw distinction between killers and Mujahideen and “if we fail in this, no leader or commoner will remain safe in Jammu Kashmir.” She has also criticized the ex-leadership and present leadership of Jamiat Ahlihadees for showing negligence in case of Showkat sahib and keeping criminal silence over the matter and said that they will have to face Allah in hereafter and answer for their ‘sins’. Late Moulana’s mother also criticized the rulers and their forces for not being able to provide justice to the family of Moulana Showkat Ahmad Shah and said ‘that this shows their reluctance and negligence’.
stopped the screening of ‘Ocean of Tears’. “I have written a letter to Secretary General UN and waiting for their response,” Jan said. Jan alleged that Home Ministry is proving the biggest obstacle in screening the documentary. “Government of Jammu and Kashmir did not allow us to screen it at Kashmir University and even the documentary was banned in Aligarh Muslim University,” he said. He said that AMU was ready to screen it but at the eleventh hour the organizer head changed his mind. “I was stunned to listen from organizer head that Home Ministry directed him to stop the screening,” Jan told CNS. Produced under the banner of the Public Service Broadcasting Trust of India (PSBT) in September 2012 and supported by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting,’Ocean of Tears’ contains sensitive content as the victims are being shown narrating their woeful tales. The documentary is based on real events and was viewed around 1,49,000 times before its trailer on Youtube was taken down. Besides screening in Kolkatta in March this year, the Ocean of Tears was screened by the Indian Documentary Producers’ Association in conjunction with Dada Saheb Phalke Film City and P.L. Deshpande Maharashtra Kala Academy in Mumbai. Flim was also screened at Aljazeera international documentary film festival-2013 and 3rd Nepal international human rights film festival-2013. It was specially screened at Oklahoma University USA few months ago. Film-maker Bilal Jan told CNS that he fails to understand why the government is not allow its screening when already a lot has been shown and written on the sufferings of Kashmiri women. Pertinently, the documentary graphically depicts the sufferings of Kashmiri women in the course of the turbulence of the past two decades. It features the plight of the women of Kunan Poshporavictims of the alleged 1991 mass rape by the army, and those of the families of the hundreds of missing people, besides other excesses.
Madhya Pradesh and neighbouring UP on auspicious Navami day. Swirling rumours about an imminent collapse of the bridge after a police lathicharge on devotees triggered panic. While scores of pilgrims were trampled, others were drowned after jumping into the swollen river. Bodies lay sprawled on the bridge even as rescue teams from Gwalior were delayed due to battered roads and a 10km traffic jam. There were only nine constables and a subinspector manning the over-lakh crowd on the 500-metre long bridge when the tragedy took place. Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has ordered a judicial inquiry into the tragedy and Congress president Sonia Gandhi has expressed anguish. The Ratangarh temple is located 55 km from the Datia district headquarters and 405 km north of Bhopal. "We have counted 100 bodies so far. Several pilgrims died on way to hospital. The toll may rise manifold," a senior police officer told TOI. The tragedy was sparked off by rumours that the bridge on Sindh River through which pilgrims were heading towards temple - was collapsing. In a huge lapse on part of the administration, heavy vehicles carrying pilgrims were allowed to ply on the bridge. Eye-witnesses claim a clash between two groups of villagers on the bridge forced a minor lathicharge by police which triggered the stampede. Eyewitness Manoj Sharma, 28, said, "police lathicharge worsened the crisis, forcing many to jump off the bridge." Sharma, a resident of Bhander village in Datia, was on his way to the temple along with his friends. A massive traffic jam on way to the temple hampered relief work and mobs began pelting stones at the police. Two cops, including a sub-divisional officer of police (SDOP) B N Basave was assaulted by the mob. "The toll could touch 120. We are yet to recover bodies from the river," Chambal range DIG D K Arya told TOI. Chief secretary, DGP and ADG intelligence have air dashed to the spot on a chopper. Senior BSP leader and
year-old told AFP in the morning when the winds had died down and heavy overnight rainfall had ceased. "Everyone was awake the whole night to see what the size of (the) storm would be and to be on guard." Pradipta Kumar Mohapatra, Orissa's special relief commissioner, said that seven people were known to have died. "Our rescue workers and state officials are working tirelessly to sort things out. "Electricity and water will be restored everywhere by this evening, except for the district of Ganjam, which has been very badly-affected. We are coming up with a separate plan to address the situation in Ganjam." More than 8,000 people were killed in 1999 when a cyclone hit the same region, devastating crops and livestock from which the area took years to recover. This time round, a massive evacuation operation, which officials said was the biggest in Indian history, appeared to have succeeded in minimising casualties. "I think we have been successful in minimising the loss of precious lives," Orissa's chief minister Naveen Patnaik told reporters in Bhubaneswar. A journalists in the cyclone zone said electricity was down in large parts of Orissa and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh while queues formed outside petrol stations with fuel rationed to five litres per vehicle. High-sided trucks lying on their sides were witness to the strength of the winds on the main highway south of Gopalpur which was littered with uprooted trees and other debris. But despite the damage, there was a general sense of relief that things could have been a lot worse.
with KNS, said that addressing the meeting, Ajmal stressed upon the need of enhancing efforts for the freedom struggle. Ajmal said that JKLF being the pioneer of present struggle has many responsibilities and all leaders and workers are trying hard to fulfill their duties in this regard. Jklf has also paid rich tributes to its Rafiaabad martyrs Shaheed Sajad Ahmad,Shaheed Nisar Ahmad, Shaheed Farooq Ahmad and Shaheed Mohammad Yousuf. JKLF prays for these martyrs and pays tributes to them. The statement also quoted Malik expressing heartfelt condolences on the demise of paternal aunt of JKLF leader Mohammad Yasin Bhat. JKLF delegation led by Yasin Malik went to her family and expressed condolences to the bereaved family.
cleared of trees and other debris. "After the exaggerated manner international agencies tried to portray it (the cyclone and disaster), the NDMA has done an excellent job," he said. Reddy made the comments after foreign meteorologists had warned before the storm hit of higher wind speeds and greater damage than Indian weather forecasters were predicting. The cyclone is the biggest to hit India in 14 years, and around one million people were evacuated and forced to take refuge in shelters and public buildings as the cyclone flattened flimsy homes and uprooted trees. Killer Indian cyclone wreaks havoc Cyclone Phailin left a trail of destruction along east coast on Sunday and at least seven people dead after the biggest evacuation in the country's history helped minimize casualties. Most of the local population spent the night huddled in shelters and public buildings as deafening winds flattened flimsy homes, uprooted trees and sent glass and asbestos strips flying through the air. The worst affected area around the town of Gopalpur in Orissa, where the eye of Phailin packing winds of 200 kilometres an hour (125 miles per hour) came ashore, remained cut off with emergency services rushing to reach there. Raj Kishor Muduli, a delivery driver who lives just outside Orissa's state capital Bhubaneswar, said the whole of his village had spent the night hunkering down in a communal shelter. "We were all afraid, the whole village was afraid, we didn't know how strong the winds would be," the 43-

Avoid Extravaganza and Show-off Celebrate Eid with Simplicity
id-ul-Azha is a sacred day in the Muslim calendar which teaches and inculcates the spirit of sacrificing the dearest things for God. This day dates back to the Prophet Abraham (A.S) who even did not hesitate to present the sacrifice of his dearest son Yousuf. However, the sprit behind this Eid is far greater far big and far extensive. It is a symbol of services to the mankind, charity, social duties particularly towards the poor, downtrodden and of course restraint from the extravaganism, show and pomp but what is happening particularly is different and is not in tune with the spirit and teachings of this day. The festivals in our society have become a symbol of blind race of shopping competitions, extravagant spree of unnecessary purchases, which results in the disappointment in those classes of the society who have less purchasing power as also in scarcity of essential commodities, hoardings, black marketing and sky-rocketing of prices. It also gives birth to ill customs, immorality and social and ethical crimes because those, whose children cannot afford to get significant money from their parents, fall prey to indecent practices. Eid does not teach also what we are seeing in the society in the name of charity and hundreds of organisations jump in the field to collect as much money they can which lands in some pockets of fake persons with fake organisations. These days everywhere vehicles are seen roaming fitted with loud speakers playing religious songs to loot the innocent people. These organisations spend thousands of rupees on transport public address system and publicity campaign they launch in the local papers. One does not understand if these organisations are collecting money for orphans and destitute why should they spend huge amount for their publicity in the local papers. This is a big scandal and people need to be aware of these so called charity organisations. These organisations are working without any checks and balances and there is no monitoring system and transparency as most of these are run by individuals or group of individuals who are responsible or accountable to none. It would really mean a good usage of the donated money, if it is given directly to mental hospital, leprosy hospital where many deserving unfortunate ones are really needy and deserve to be helped. Otherwise, there are no two opinions that most of the money donated by people for orphans goes waste as it is not utilised mostly for them. Government has no mechanism in place to monitor or audit these organisations so these untrustworthy organisations are misusing the donated money. Eid is the festival of happiness and joy. Let us celebrate and share it with the real spirit. Let us refrain from extravaganza pomp and show and let us donate in the proper way for the welfare of poor and deserving but at the same time let us be aware of exploiters, emotional blackmailers and those who misuse our money in the name of charity and religion.

Agriculture at Fast Track to Achieve the Desired Food Basket
rogressive fragmentation of land holdings, degrading natural resource base and emerging challenges of climate change are resulting in increased pressure on land and water. Required agricultural production and a diversified food basket to meet the requirement of the increasing population with higher per capita income, has to emanate from the same limited net sown area by increasing productivity with an optimal use of available technologies, water and land resources. The Department of Agriculture & Cooperation (DAC), Ministry of Agriculture, has been actively working towards strengthening agriculture sector in the country by devising new and innovative programmes for the benefit of farming community. In order to meet the growing food requirement, Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY), launched in August 2007, incentivizes the states to increase public investment in agriculture and allied sectors taking agro climatic conditions, natural resource issues and technology into account and integrating livestock, poultry and fisheries fully while providing more flexibility and autonomy to the states in planning and execution of schemes. It has become the principal instrument for increasing the States’ investment in the agriculture sector which now includes several commodity specific measures namely Bringing Green Revolution to the Eastern Region of India (BGREI), Special Initiative for Pulses and Oilseeds, Accelerating Fodder Production, Creating Vegetable Clusters, NutriCereals, Oil Palm Development, Protein Supplements, Rainfed Area Development Programme and the Saffron Mission. Besides, RKVY, National Food Security Mission (NFSM) aims to produce additional 10, 8 and 2 million tonnes of rice, wheat and pulses respectively, thereby achieving an additional production of 20 million
tonnes of food grains by 2011-12. National Horticulture Mission (NHM) targeting at the holistic development of horticulture sector by ensuring forward and backward linkages through a cluster approach, with active participation of all stake holders has transformed horticulture sector tremendously. Horticulture Mission for North East and Himalayan
States and UTs across the country. ICT (including mobile governance) is also being used extensively to reach out to the farmers and other Stakeholders. In addition, AgriManagement Agencies (ATMAs) have Clinic and Agri-Business Centers and been set up in 604 rural districts of 28 Kisan Call Centers are other important
programmes that are helping in the agriculture development in the country by providing extension services to farmers on payment basis through setting up of economically viable selfemployment ventures and providing agriculture related information to the farming community through toll free country wide common eleven digit number 1800-180-1551. These Kisan Call Centres have been revamped, strengthened and upgraded recently with State-of–the art technologies. Number of farmers deriving benefit from KCCs has doubled since then. Support to Central Institutes is a scheme to support Directorate of Extension (DOE) for implementing all activities/components namely, National Institute for Agriculture Extension Management (MANAGE), 4 Extension Education Institutes (EEIs) and Exhibitions and Fairs organized by State Agriculture Universities/ICAR Institutes with the support of DAC in the five zones of the country including North East to disseminate information to farming communities on development of agriculture. These programmes of the Government have also emerged as the path breaking interventions which have helped in achieving record production of cereals, pulses, oilseeds, fruits, vegetables and spices during 2010-11 and 2011-12. Due to constant efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture, a record production of foodgrains at 257.44 million tonnes, of which 129.94 million tonnes during Kharif season and 127.50 million tonnes during the Rabi season has been achieved. Of the total foodgrains production, production of cereals was 240.23 million tonnes and pulses of 17.21 million tonnes. State and UT governments have been advised to take advantage of the good soil moisture and target for significantly higher Rabi production so as to make good for the loss of production in the Kharif season.
One Child One Light: A Project to Brighten up Schooling Days Changed Rural Scenario Over the last two decades, the rural areas of India have witnessed many changes. There are better road connections, there is a significant improvement in health care, literacy levels have gone up and mobile phones have become ubiquitous. But one thing that hasn’t changed much is the sorry state of electricity supply. 12-14 hours load shedding is a common phenomenon across most states of the country. When there is no electricity for such a long time span, one of the most affected lot are the school going children. In absence of electricity, students either do not study at all or they study under kerosene lamp. Either situation is not good. In India over 120 million children depend upon crude kerosene lamp for studying due to lack of grid electricity supply. Kerosene lamps do not emit sufficient light to enable children to read in comfort. They also emit carbon monoxide, which is harmful to the health of a child. There is also a chance of kerosene spilling resulting in a fire hazard. The end result -students fail to keep pace with school teaching and when they pass, they are less confident and less skillful to find employment opportunities. Therefore the availability of light during the study hours of children is very important. So how to address this challenge? LED Study Lights - The Best Solution Among all possible solutions, solar energy based solar lanterns appear to provide the cheapest and quickest solution. Emerging LED lighting technology which is semiconductor based presents a wonderful solution to this simple lighting issue. With the white LED revolution it is now possible to provide a simple light suitable for reading purpose that consumes less than a quarter watt but provides 10 to 50 times more useable light than a wick lamp. Hyderabad based Voluntary Organization Thrive Energy Technologies has
indigenously developed a Solar Study light which provides enough light intensity for study purpose. It gives 7-8 hours of light per day on full charge. Features of Solar LED · Provides close to 150 lux of evenly distributed light output as compared to 23 lux of light output provided by a flickering wick lamp · Uses a NiMH (Nickel-metal Hydride) battery, which can be charged either by using the 0.5 watt solar panel provided or by an AC mobile charger or by a solar powered bulk charging system · Uses the world's best LED and an advanced IC that ensures consistent and quality lighting even after many years of use.
located in South West Madhya Pradesh. It is proposed to target 100 schools from Zhirnya and Bhagwanpura Tehsil, which are among the most backward during the pilot stage. The main plan is to distribute as many as 100,000 lights in the district. Khargone district of MP has been chosen as pilot as more than 84% population lives in rural area of which 40% belongs to SC/ST category. Over 40% people use kerosene for lighting purpose. Per capita electricity consumption in MP is only about 330 units per year, while the same is 750 units for India and on an average 2000 units for the world. The project is being executed by Education Park located in Khargone district in collaboration with Thrive Energy Technologies, Hyderabad.

hours of light during the night for 2 -3 days” says Tejwani. Student, who owns solar lamp, takes it home for study during night. The student brings the light back to the school for recharging whenever it is due. Benefits of the Project The project, once implemented successfully, will bring lot of benefits directly and indirectly in the society. · 10,000 students getting solar lights will result in 30 lakh extra study hours per year. · It will bring awareness among parents, teachers and administrators and encourage people to get their own solar lights. Another domestic light model is also available for home use. · It will help reduce demand for kerosene, which is already in short supply, which in turn will save precious foreign exchange for the country. · It will reduce the health hazard to children caused by the use of kerosene lamps. · The implementation of this project will result in saving of 1.5 million tons of Carbon Dioxide emission per year. The purpose of this project is to demonstrate the effect and impact of the project on the social life of Madhya Pradesh and encourage governments to adopt solar lamps for lighting purpose as the most cost effective solution in rural areas. India’s Focus on Solar Energy The Government has recognized the importance of solar energy and has launched the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission. The immediate aim of the Mission is to focus on setting up an enabling environment for solar technology penetration in the country both at a centralized and decentralized level. To promote research the National Centre for Photovoltaic Research and Education (NCPRE) has been set up at IIT Bombay, to carry out basic and applied research activities. Eventually, NCPRE aims to make solar PV a cost-effective and relevant technology option.
