Baie lief vir jou my sus.”

Soutpansberg has “lost” its once lush grasslands By Anton van Zyl

The Soutpansberg used to have vast stretches of grassland, with the springbok grazing alongside antelope such as the extinct Lichtenstein’s hartebeest. In less than 100 years, the landscape has changed from open stretches of land to trees and bush. The reason for the change can be found in man’s intervention. A researcher from the University of Venda, Dr Norbert Hahn, recently published a study de scribing the change in landscape in the Soutpans berg over the past 150 years. Much of his research is based on historical photos and descriptions of the area. Dr Hahn has been collecting old photographs Louis Trichardt as seen from the mountain. The photo must date after 1926, as the Church of the for more than 25 years. The oldest photos from Vow can be seen in the centre. Photo from MuseuMAfricA, ref. no. PH2005-56243. the Soutpansberg are those of the Swiss photog rapher, H. Ferdinand Gros. In 1888, Gros took, among others, a photo of “Pisang Kop”, which shows its southern slopes as almost devoid of any tree or shrub growth. These photos, as well as later ones taken by Hugh Exton (1898) and Alfred Duggan-Cronin show (1923), show the rapid trans formation from high-rainfall grassland to secondary bush encroachment, alien infestation, silviculture and sub-tropical fruit orchards. “Through history, no era can account for such an extreme transformation of habitat as that which occurred in the last 180 years when people of European descent arrived in the Soutpansberg region,” writes Dr Hahn. He draws from the 1837 diary of Louis Trigardt, in which the pioneer makes reference to the 15 game species hunted. The three most common species hunted were blue wildebeest, zebra and the Cape eland, but on two occasions springbok were shot in close proximity to the Soutpansberg. In June 1871, the German explorer, Carl Mauch, passed through the area and he described the foot of the Soutpansberg as almost bare, with tree growth only found towards the slope of the mountain. His observations were echoed by the Swiss missionary, The saltpan to the northwest of the Soutpansberg from which the mountain got its name. Photo Rev E Creux, when he describes a meeting with Vhavenda king Makhado in 1883. He had to travel taken by H.F. Gros 1888, MuseuMAfricA, ref. no. PH2005-6244A. up the mountain to Songozwi, and described the grassy area below, noting that the air was filled with the perfume from all sorts of flowers. Not just the southern slopes of the Soutpansberg have changed over the decades. In August 1917, when T.G. Trevor visited Lake Fundudzi, he re corded the habitat to the east of Sibasa as “…an open down-like plateau, with scattered Protea trees and close-growing grass, which might be taken for a portion of the Transvaal high veld.” Dr Hahn’s research has indicated that approxi mately 10% of the Soutpansberg was covered in now-extinct grasslands. “The contributing factors to the demise of these grasslands are complex and usually entail an interaction of various influences,” he states in his research summary. In the study, he discusses some of the factors that may have caused the rapid demise of these grasslands. One of the reasons the trees and bushes started to encroach, was probably the large-scale culling of Hoërskool Louis Trichardt het Maandag hul nuwe Leerling Uitvoerende Komitee (LUK) vir the large mammalian herbivores, and more specif 2017/18 bekendgemaak. When Schoemansdal Jamadar, Thendo Muloiwa en TG Fourie. In die middel is DJ du Preez, Anwyll Buys, Lukie town was in its prime (around 1860), João Albasini Enslin, Khodani Ramabulana en Dohan Smit. Agter is Richard Lambert, Tiaan Futcher, Philip estimated that between 70 and 80 tons of ivory was Apea-Adu en Turner de Swardt. hunted annually. When Pater Joaquim de Santa Rita Montanha travelled through Schoemansdal (18551856), he remarked that the number of elephants hunted was impossible to estimate. The hunting was also not limited to elephants. Rhinoceroses (both square-lipped and hooked-lipped) were shot for their horns, Transvaal lions were shot for their skins and even Southern ostriches were shot for their feathers. In 1923, the Venda phala-phala horn was still

made from Sable antelope horn. With the demise of the Sable antelope within the area, the Vhavenda had to start using Greater kudu horns to make the phala-phala trumpet. Keystone herbivores, such as the African el ephant, are extremely important in maintaining biodiversity. “The demise of keystone herbivore from the Soutpansberg can in part explain the dras tic transformation of the high rainfall grasslands into secondary bush and woodland,” writes Hahn. His research has shown that at least 14 mammalian herbivore species became extinct in the region. “Excessive hunting was most probably the main contributing factor that drove these species to their minimum viable populations, together with rapid change that forced them to extinction,” says Hahn. Another reason for the bush encroachment was the change in hydrology. Hahn describes how the eucalyptus and pine tree plantations have succeeded in “drying up” the marshy conditions south of the mountains. He explains by mentioning the example of the Louis Trichardt railway station. The railway line was constructed in 1914, but stopped just south of the town at the Ledig siding to avoid the marshy lower town. “In the 1920s it was decided to shift the station to the lower town as the planting of Eucalyp tus and Pine trees below Hanglip had dried up the marshes. The new station was opened in October 1928, only eight years after the establishment of plantations,” he writes. Hahn explains in his thesis that the shallow water table favoured the high-rainfall grassland, but once these were dried up, the secondary woodland tree and shrub species started to take control. Two other factors that contributed to the change are climate change and the manner in which veld fires were being controlled. Hahn refers to the glob al rise in CO2 levels, mentioning that this promotes the expansion of woody vegetation into grasslands due to the fertilizing effect of CO2 on tree growth. The South African climate is also following the international trend and is steadily rising. The effect of veld fires on the environment is often underestimated. “Fire is an important driver towards the maintenance of grasslands in southern Africa, stimulating grass growth and helping with the exclusion of woody species,” writes Hahn. He refers to rainfall models that predict that all areas receiving above 650 mm rain would be covered by forest if fire was suppressed. The summary of Dr Hahn’s study can be downloaded at: http://www.tandfon line.com/doi/full/10.1080/0035919X .2017.1346528?scroll=top&needAccess=true

“My boetie was ‘n spontane mense gewees, en het ‘n goeie hart gehad.

“Dan het hy altyd sy skouers so opgetrek en vir my gesê: ‘But I’ve got it!’,” het Dawn vertel.

Tannie Johanna blaas nuwe lewe in ou klavier Deur Isabel Venter

Haar groot passie, vertel tannie Johanna, was altyd naaldwerk.

Regarding the construction of the new southbound overpass at the R37 interchange (to Tzaneen), traffic will be diverted from the existing N1 onto the newly constructed eastern ramps of the future interchange. Schematic supplied.

Take note of traffic deviations on N1 Traffic News

The South African National Roads Agency Ltd (SANRAL) has warned road users of road closures on the N1 eastern ring around Polokwane, due to the construction of a new over- and underpass bridge that will commence shortly. “Temporary deviations of the N1 have been built to allow construction of the bridges to proceed,” said SANRAL in a press release last week. The deviations will be implemented between 1 to 11 August and are expected to be in place for 10 to 12 months. A short deviation of the N1

has been built near the Shell Ultra City (N1 south) to al low construction of the hotel bridge to proceed. Traffic will be reduced from two lanes per direction to one lane per direc tion. “The north-south bi-direc tional flow will be separated by traffic delineators and motorists should proceed with care,” said SANRAL. Regarding the construction of the new southbound over pass at the R37 interchange (to Tzaneen), traffic will be diverted from the existing N1 onto the newly constructed eastern ramps of the future interchange. Once the traffic has been diverted, this will

allow construction of the new N1 southbound bridge over the R37 to proceed. Traffic will continue north and south as normal through the deviation. SANRAL apologises for any inconvenience caused and thanks motorists for their pa tience and cooperation during the construction period. “The agency takes seriously its mandate from government to manage and maintain the national road network. In so doing, the safety and wellbeing of road users and the commu nities in which it operates are paramount,” said SANRAL.

Makhado mayor Cllr Shonisani Sinyosi (second from right) cuts the ribbon to open the show officially.

Please don’t oppose show, asks Makhado mayor By Kaizer Nengovhela

The mayor of the Makhado local municipality, Shonisani Sinyosi, has appealed to all residents in the region to support the annual show. During the opening of the Makhado show last Thursday, she again called on organisations to not organise events during the last weekend in July. “We believe that Makhado belongs to all citizens who stay in Makhado, whether it be black, white or coloured. We are all residents of Makhado, so we must do one thing,” she said. Mayor Sinyosi said that she would engage in more talks with those people who organised their own shows and competed with the Makhado Show. The mayor said that the show had improved a lot this year and ascribed it to the fact that the mu nicipality had once again taken the responsibility for organising it, like they did the year before. “We did not outsource the show to an external service

provider. We had to make sure that we restore the pride of our people by organizing a vibrant show like we did last year. We are satisfied that we have achieved our goal of taking back the Makhado annual show to its former glory days,” she said. Sinyosi said up-and-coming entrepreneurs also had the opportunity to market their small businesses to the public during the annual show. “The show also provided an ideal platform for small businesses to network with government institutions, companies and other organizations that may consider appointing them as service providers,” she said. Some of the hawkers at the show complained about the high stall fees they had to pay. Some also felt that it could have been marketed better, but the consensus was that business was down, compared to previous years. “By coming to the show, we are generating an income, so I’m happy, but it is not as busy as previous years,” one hawker remarked.

POTJIEKOS FES5 MOTHS TIVAL

The MOTHS in Louis Trichardt have invited one and all to their Turbi Hills Potjiekos Festival on Saturday, 5 August, from 09:00. As part of the festival, residents are invited to enter for the potjiekos com petition, but it is going to be a competition with a difference. NOTE: A big screen television will be on site to watch the final between the Lions and Crusaders! Entrance will cost R250 per potjie and entrants can start cooking at 09:00. Each potjie will be judged according to taste (80%) and presentation (20%). The trick lies therein that the public will be the judge – the potjie which tastes the best according to the “judges” will win the prize. Speaking of prizes, a first, second and third prize to the value of R5 000, R3 000 and R2 000 re spectively are at stake, sponsored by Caterpack. Entrance will cost a mere R15 per person (free for U/12s) not wishing to judge the potjiekos competition. Those wishing to be a judge will have to pay R50 (rules to be explained on the day). Enough stalls will be available and persons wishing to book a stall to exhibit on the day can do so at the price of only R50. The only condi tion is that no other cooked food be served. “There will be entertainment for old and young, live music by Gypsy Music and lots to eat and drink,” says Old Bill Alan Odendaal. Fires will be provided for all contestants. SAB will have draftontap while a cash bar will be available. People wishing to book a stall at the festival can do so by phoning Alan at 083 660 2472.

5 .303-SKIETKOMPETISIE

Volgens mededelings van Oom W.A.S. S.M.N. Brönn die bioskoop by Coenie gekoop.

According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), there is an indication for above-normal rainfall during early spring (August, September and October) for the south-western parts of the country. This is according to their long-term forecast for August to December this year. This prediction is strengthened by the fact that strong develop ment of the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) is taking place towards a negative phase during the early stages of the season. A negative phase of SAM is usually associated with colder and wetter conditions for the south-western

half of the country during winter and early spring. The SAWS has warned, how ever, that despite wetter con ditions expected during early spring over the south-western parts, the negative impact of drier conditions that could still occur in various parts of the south-western half of the country remain a concern. “Therefore, it is recommended that the current drought measures (which are already in place) continue for the foreseeable future,” the SAWS has said. In terms of the northern parts of the country, the SAWS states that most forecasting systems indicate warmer-than-normal temperatures, while an indication

exists for cooler conditions over the south and south-western parts, moving towards late spring (October, November and Decem ber). “Furthermore, we have been monitoring the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon for some months, specifically the potential development on an El Niño event. We can now confi dently predict that the ENSO is expected to remain in a neutral phase during South Africa’s summer period. This means that neither a La Niña nor an El Niño event is predicted. Subsequently, at this early stage, the prediction is therefore that that ENSO is unlikely to directly influence southern Africa’s summer rain fall,” says the SAWS.

ZOUTPANSBERGER, 4 AUGUST 2017

I am ... the Way, the Truth and the Life

W

hy is sanctification so important? Because without holiness, no one will see God (Heb.12:14). 1. Our nature and character are to be renewed after the image of God in Christ. Sanctification is a call to share God’s moral perfection (1 Pet. 1:16). The goal of sanctification is always presented as likeness to Christ. God has chosen Chris tians to bear the family likeness of his Son (Rom. 8:29; Phil. 1:9- 11). God’s purpose is that we should copy Christ and be like Him (Phil. 2:5). 2. Obedience to God is to grow and increase. Nothing we do outwardly has value to God without the willing obedience of the heart (1 Sam. 15:22). He requires that his commandments shall be upon our heart (Deut.6:5-6). Practical righteousness is observing all of the Lord’s commandments and regulations blamelessly (Luke 1:6). We please God as we keep his commandments (1 John 3:22). 3. All these things take place with the power and help of the Holy Spirit. Our confidence as we seek to work out the salvation God has given us is that He Himself is at work in us, giving us the will and power to achieve his purpose (Phil.2:13). The Holy Spirit is the agent of our sanctification, even as our regeneration (1 Cor. 6:11; 1 Thess. 4:7-8). Strength for the Christian life comes by the personal indwelling of the Holy Spirit (Eph. 3:16; 2 Cor. 4:16). The Holy Spirit assists us in putting to death the misdeeds of the body (Rom. 8:13). Always remember that the Holy Spirit uses the Word of God in our lives (John 17:17). Love the Lord, love holiness and love the Word of God. People who are fond of say ing, “the Holy Spirit told me” rarely ever quote scriptures. Go figure. - 079 516 8303

Jamin Schuch, member of the Limpopo Crusaders (Louis Trichardt) polocrosse team, is set to compete in the South-Africa-vs-Zambia U14 junior international polocrosse tournament this weekend.
