Unnatural deaths for two pupils Young Suprise stabbed to death By Kaizer Nengovhela A cloud of sadness still hangs over the Nhlavulani vilage after a 17-year-old girl, Suprise Nkuna, was allegedly stabbed and killed last Friday. The deceased was a Grade 11 pupil at Mukula Secondary School. Her mother, Ms Elizabeth Mabasa, said that the family were battling to cope with the loss. “It is really painful. She was still young

and did not deserve to die like that,” she said. “I want to see justice done. Nkuna was very focused on education, and I expected her to complete her studies, so that she could help the family.” The girl was stabbed several times when a suspect broke a window and entered the house where she was staying with her younger sister and brother. The principal of Mukula High, Mr Edward Kharidzha, said she was a bright pupil who always worked hard at school. “This came as a shock to us. Nkuna never quarrelled with anyone and she easily associated herself with people.” The spokesperson for the police, Lt Col Ngotshe Ngoepe, said that the incident occurred at about midnight. “We were alerted by members of the community about the incident, and when we arrived at the scene, Nkuna was lying dead on the ground,” he said. He added that the police had subsequently opened a case of murder. “Our investigations are still continuing. We also managed to arrest a suspect the next day.” The suspect, Tshedza Tshikovhi (22), appeared briefly in the Giyani Magistrate’s Court on Monday and the case was postponed to 9 December for further investigations. Nkuna will be laid to rest at Nhlavulani cemetery tomorrow (Saturday).

Police divers retrieved the body from the stream.

16-year-old boy drowns in stream By Kaizer Nengovhela Laughter turned to screams of terror as a young boy, Mbali Hlungwani (16), drowned in a stream near Shirley Village last Tuesday (22nd). Mbali, a Grade 10 pupil at the HS Philip School, joined his friend to cool off in the stream. From what could be established the stream pulled him in and he started to struggle. His friend tried to save his life, but the water was too deep and dirty. The friend then decided to run to

the settlement to attract the attention of fellow community members. Community and family members gathered at the water, looking for him until police divers arrived last Wednesday. When they arrived at the scene, they could do little more than retrieve the body. His untimely death has left his family devastated. A successful gospel artist, Bongani Rakhivhani (39), is a musician who will not trade music for anything else. He told Limpopo Mirror that he fell in love with music at an early age. However, it was in 1995 when his late brother, Oupa Rakhivhani, taught him to play the guitar skills that he started to see music from a different perspective. “I carried on playing the instrument and my love for strumming a guitar developed,” he said. “On my musical journey I also learned to play other instruments in church, such drums and bass guitar.” He was a member of the school choir at Ladzani Primary School and Robert Mmbulungeni Secondary School, where he honed his vocal skills. “With music, I found a way of serving my God,” he said. “I choose to sing gospel because it defines who I am much better.” A resident of Thengwe village, Rakhivhani has just released his debut album, entitled Your name is Jesus. He said that the album was doing well in the market. “I am really happy with the way it is selling for now,” he said. “People are buying my CD.” The album comprises ten songs which all speak about the love of God for humankind. Winners know when to shine. Here they are seen showing off the fruits of their labour during the awards ceremony. Sharing their moment of glory are guests and officials from the department.

Recognition for disabled farmers By Elmon Tshikhudo

A Phalaphala FM presenter, Thikholelwi “Tico” Liphadzi, will present Koze Kuse live on SABC 1 on 8 December. Liphadzi will share his favourite music with Phalaphala FM listeners and SABC 1 viewers at 00:00. The Koze Kuse Radio Meets TV slot is a show that kicks off each night’s programming. In the slot, a Phalaphala FM presenter will present his/her Top Ten playlist and will introduce and/or back-announce each music video from 10 down to 1. It is an opportunity for radio fans to see their favourite SABC Radio DJs on SABC1 and get excited about local music. Liphadzi matriculated at Thohoyandou High and received his training in radio broadcasting in Johannesburg. Having started his radio career at Univen Community Radio, Tico joined the then Radio Univen as a presenter in 2002. He joined Phalaphala FM in 2005. Liphadzi is affectionately called Tico Skhokho by his supporters, and presents Mulakhulu, a talk show that is on air midweek from 03:00 to 6:00. “I used to mime radio programmes on my own at home and could not resist the opportunity to join Phalaphala FM.” Liphadzi says he is not yet satisfied by his recent success as he plans to achieve more in life. He adds that he was still young and still has more to offer to the community. He urges the youth to be serious with their education, so that they can make a significant contribution to the community in which they live. “Youths must stay away from drugs and criminal activities and prepare themselves for careers that will benefit them in life.” He also mentions that he was hungry for success and works hard to succeed. He has been shunting between roles and he ascribes his success to hard work, perseverance and effective time management. According to a spokesperson for Phalaphala FM, the station feels that this is a perfect opportunity “to strengthen the transversal partnership with SABC 1, following the sound relationship it has with SABC TV. Tico says that his ambition is to present at one of the SABC stations like his colleagues, who are working for different electronic media.

Disabled farmers in the Vhembe district have have been complaining for ages about being marginalized when it comes to farming competitions. The farmers finally got their day when a competition was held to recognize their work. They were awarded certificates and cash prizes during the People Living with Disability in Agriculture and Rural Development Awards 2016/17. The ceremony, the first of its kind in the country, took place at the Thohoyandou Indoor Sports Centre last Thursday. Awards were made in the categories of backyard, schools, formal and informal farming. The three winners in each category took home prizes from R3 000 to R5 000. The coordinator of the awards, Mr Hollick Netshirungulu, an agricultural advisor in Vhembe, said that they had received complaints from disabled people since 2009.

“Our department did not leave the complaints lying down, but through our transformation directorate’s special programmes we started with the planning of guidelines, which were completed this year, hence the competition,” he said. Netshirungulu further said the competition would identify and encourage disabled farmers to participate fully in the economic mainstream of the country. “We are happy as a department that at our first try, we received lots of entries, and though the standard was not that high, it is mainly because of the drought.” Ms Eunice Mabasa, acting director of the department in Vhembe, urged the farmers to regard their work as businesses and pledged further support for the farmers. One of the winners, businessman Chillboy Rathando (38) of Rathando Farming and Pest Control, said it had been an uphill struggle for them as disabled farmers to be recognized. “We have been margin-

“Telkom holds church to ransom” By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho

The mayor of the Makhado local municipality, Cllr Mildred Sinyosi, and members of her executive committee embarked on courtesy visits to both the Kutama Royal Council under the leadership of Thovhele Vho-Kutama and the Sinthumule Royal Council under the leadership of Thovhele Vho-Sinthumule. The visits were undertaken as a way of showing respect to traditional leaders. Mayor Sinyosi used the opportunity to officially introduce members of her executive committee. She said that she was looking forward to a good working relationship with all traditional leaders. Both Chiefs Vho-Kutama and Vho-Sinthumule expressed their excitement about what they said was the beginning of a good working relationship. In our photographs are (top) Thovhele Vho-Kutama and Cllr Sinyosi and in the photograph underneath are Thovhele Vho-Sinthumule and Cllr Sinyosi.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa’s Tshitandani congregation in Louis Trichardt accuses Telkom of holding the church to ransom. This follows Telkom’s delay in removing a telephone pole that is stopping the further construction of the church building at this stage. According to the church members, they had requested Telkom to remove the pole and cables to allow them to resume with the building project. The congregation’s chairperson, Mr Jonas Ramahala, said that Telkom agreed to their request, but they had still not removed the pole. “It was then that we decided to continue with our building project, because we had already secured contractors,” he said. “So part of the church building runs around the pole.” He said that the building could not be completed now, because the pole is still stuck inside the church. “It has become impossible for us to erect the roof.” Ramahala said that the church had since sent more letters to Telkom’s Makhado office, who kept on giving them empty promises. The church’s first request was submitted to Telkom in October 2015 in Louis Trichardt, where a Telkom official got a team together to do an inspection of the site. “The team that visited the site in November 2015 told us we should give them three months to get the pole relocated,” he said. “Three months meant that by end of February 2016 the pole would have been relocated. But that did not happen.” So far, it is the church’s feeling that Telkom is not being considerate “and in actual fact, standing between us and the completion of our project.” “Their action is also resulting in the church and its contractor (Makhado Roof Trusses) suffering tremendous losses,” he said. “The trusses that were erected have been exposed to bad

weather and are going to have to be replaced in order to ensure a quality roof structure. Our contractor has suffered losses in that they had to uproot their team before completion and this means that when the pole is removed they have to bring back their team at additional costs.” The media relations senior specialist at Telkom, Mr Pynee Chetty, said that line pole removal was not as small a thing as the church might think. “The removal of the pole and line should have been effected before the construction could take place,” he said. “However, as Telkom, we do not just remove the poles and lines because the church had asked us. We need the permission of the local

Council, who must also direct us about any possible new line routes,” he said. He said that the church, after seeking permission from the Council to build the church, should have then properly informed all other parties about the new project. Chetty stated that such a line relocation would also affect other businesses who were using Telkom’s communication services. “Just imagine if we were to just remove the pole and line without the Council’s consent, and all other clients of ours were affected and the Council had not made provision for another possible route for us, wouldn’t our clients in that area suffer more?” he said.

Police seize elephant tusks in Giyani Crime A man was arrested near Giyani earlier this week on a charge of the illegal selling of elephant tusks in the area. It follows after the police followed up on information about illegal activities and members of the tracking team arrested a man who was allegedly selling elephant tusks at Phalaubeni village, east of Giyani. According to the police spokesperson, Lt-Col Montashe Ngoepe, the members reacted swiftly and a 54-year-old man was arrested and two elephant tusks were seized. “The police responded to a tip-off from the community members in connection with a man in possession of the elephant tusks,” he said.

Thovhele Wilson is a changed man Governance Barely two weeks after Limpopo Mirror published a story about senior traditional leader Thovhele Wilson Mutele of Ha-Mutele, who was burning with desire to be baptized, Mutele has lived up to his words and he is now a changed man. “My subjects know me as a

heavy drinker and smoker who lights cigarette after cigarette. I knew from within that I was not setting a good example for them, especially the youth, and that is why I decided to quit everything and follow Jesus Christ. It was an easy thing for me to repent and travel to Moria for baptism, because I had that burning desire to live a clean life.” Mutele said quitting booze and smoking would give him enough time to concentrate on community development. “The largest part of my life will now be spent in church and on social activities that will empower my people. I used to have time for that earlier before I was baptized, but it was not enough. I know what alcohol and tobacco do to a person if consumed in an irresponsible manner and I advise my people to use those substances with care. Otherwise, if I have the powers, I would advise my people not to drink and smoke at all.”

He said he had tried to guide his people by using common knowledge, but it was now time to seek wisdom from God. “Traditional leadership was created by God and it is important for us as traditional leaders to seek guidance from Him. It also helps us to take decisions wisely because before conclusion, you first ask God for the right direction. Although it is weeks after my baptism, I feel a changed man and I now enjoy my position because God is guiding me wisely.” Mutele advises other traditional leaders: “I appeal to my fellow traditional leaders to turn to God for wisdom, protection and guidance. A saved traditional leader conducts himself in a dignified manner and leads an exemplary life. I will continue to spread the word of God to other traditional leaders and everyone I come across, so that we can all live a better life under the wings of Jesus Christ.”

Clemour’s last “big achievement” was when he was invited to sing the national anthem when the Springbok rugby team took on the Wallabies on 1 October. He mesmerized the almost 50 000 spectators who attended the match at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. On Christmas Eve (24 December) Clemour Music will be hosting a Red Carpet

Music Concert called The Night Before Christmas with Clemour. The event will be held at the Fountains of Life church at Ha-Chabani. The venue can accommodate 1100 people. A number of guest artists from Johannesburg, Pretoria, Limpopo and Cape Town will also join Clemour on stage. “We are bringing the beauty of a super, explosive music concert to the village, to inspire, motivate, encourage, and entertain and to influence the new generation that anything is possible, regardless of your background,” Clemour said in a statement last week.

He further promised to maintain the standard of the road. The taxi and bus operators in the area applauded the new tarred road. The project created 46 temporary jobs during its construction.

Minister to look into abuse claims By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho The case of an elderly taxi owner, Mrs Mushathama Sarah Makaukau, may soon receive the necessary attention and consideration from the Department of Transport. This comes after the national office of the Department of Transport had confirmed receipt of a complaint from Mrs Makaukau. The elderly lady had requested both the district and provincial offices of the Department of Transport to intervene in the dispute between her and the Zoutpansberg Taxi Association (ZTA). The problem started when the ZTA allegedly converted Makaukau’s permit from the Hlanganani Taxi Association to their taxi association without her understanding and explicit instructions. The 87-year-old Makaukau also insists that the ZTA must refund her, which amounts to around R20 000. She alleges that she continued to pay “unnecessary monthly fees” to the association. Makaukau feels that the ZTA had been abusing her, since they had converted her permit to their association. “When I speak with them, they harass me,” she said. “I just wanted to sit down

with them and solve the problem, but they won’t give me that chance. This is the reason why I decided to contact the minister of transport, Ms Dipuo Peters. I hope her office will assist.” However, the ZTA’s chairperson, Mr Thiathu Maimela, has since denied Makaukau’s claims of abuse and said that the money she was referring to was

for affiliation purposes. The official within the minister’s office, Ms Lavhelesani Mulangaphuma, confirmed receipt of Makaukau’s letter of grievance and said that they were busy processing the complaint. “Her complain will receive immediate attention once we have processed it,” she said. Mrs Mushathama Sarah Makaukau may soon get help.

Speedsters, reckless and negligent drivers who will be driving on the N1 road will have to think twice after the launch of the new high-tech vehicles that will be used to clamp down on moving violations on the N1. The MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Ms Nandi Ndalane, issued a stern warning to motorists travelling along the N1 road in Limpopo last week during the launch of the new vehicles. “The Department of Transport said that they cannot de-

ploy the Traffic Police at every kilometer on the N1 for speed and traffic violations. Some motorists are taking advantage of this unfortunate situation. They should beware now,” she said. She added that the Department had moved with speed in procuring vehicles with the help of the Road Traffic Management Corporation, which will be fitted with new technology to monitor for moving violations, including and not limited to, excessive speeding, unsafe overtaking and reckless and negligent driving, among others.

She also said that the unmarked vehicles would patrol the entire stretch of the N1 in the Limpopo Province. She warned that the department would adopt zero tolerance for traffic offenders on the N1. “Many accidents which are caused by speed are unacceptably high,” she said. She further said that as the Department they could not fold their arms when innocent lives were being taken on their roads by irresponsible motorists. “Harsh actions will be taken against those found to be violating the rules of the road,” she said.

Team improve after kit donation By Silas Nduvheni The Agapé City Church at Vuwani-Hamagilasi donated a new soccer kit to Maelula New Mates on Sunday. “Our players used to wear ragged soccer kit and were without a good ball to practice due to the poverty hindering rural communities. We understand, we have a role to encourage young people in our village to actively participate in different sporting codes, but our players were not having better kit,” said the managing director of the club, Mr Jerome Matibe

According to Matibe, they knocked on the doors of different organisations but nobody wanted to help them, until Prophetess Mashudu Mauna and her husband, Apostle Elijah Mauna, came to their rescue. “We are very thankful for the donation of soccer kit, which we hope will go a long the way in promoting soccer skills for our players,” added Matibe. Barely two hours after they had been given the new soccer kit, which includes jerseys, boots and a ball, they played a soccer match against Ramokgopa Young brothers and finally beat them 3-1. Prophetess Mashudu Mauna said

she and her husband had been born and bred in Maelula village and were worried to hear that young soccer players did not have the necessary kit. “We understand that if young people are kept busy, less crime will be reported in the communities. We want these young soccer players to develop a love of different sporting codes because soccer can be a job for those who can play well,” said Mauna. According to Mauna, her church has social responsibilities to the communities, hence they are committed to seeing members of communities improve their lives.

Maweja and Gawula in ABC clash By Frank Mavhungu It will be another busy weekend for the teams affiliated to the Limpopo Stream of the ABC Motsepe League. After donating important points to their opponents in their last four matches, Joe Maweja are expected to make a comeback this weekend. They will host Gawula Classic at the Tshifulanani Stadium tomorrow. Maweja are fast becoming one of the relegation candidates, following their poor performance in the past weeks. Maweja are still to win a league match under the guidance of their newly appointed head coach, Mr Mzwakhe

Nyathi. Neither Maweja nor Classic are on the safe side when it comes to relegation. Maweja are currently lying in the 10th spot with 11 points, while Classic are a step below them with 10 points. It will not be easy for the Classic strikers, David Hlungwane and Solly Ngoveni, to find their way through the defence of Maweja, which is marshalled by Dakalo Ratshitanga, Khongotela Mahlaule and Aubrey Ndou. Maweja’s midfielders, Khumbudzo Muvhango, Xinavona Chauke and Takalani Ramagalela, will cause havoc in the middle of the park if they are not well contained. Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila will

Disaster committee for Thulamela By Silas Nduvheni The disaster manager of the Thulamela Local Municipality, Mr Ntevheleni Nepfumbada, has called on different stakeholders to work with the municipality during the occurrence of disasters, so that the affected communities should get help in time He was speaking to representatives from different stakeholders who gathered at the Thohoyandou Indoor Sports Centre on Thursday to re-launch a disaster advisory committee that will take office

for the next five years. The Thulamela municipal spokesperson, Mr Nndwamato Tshiila, said that the primary responsibility of the forum was to consult with its stakeholders to coordinate their actions in matters relating to disaster management in our local areas. According to Tshiila, the municipality will be in a better position to serve the communities effectively through the disaster forum. “We are delighted about the re-launch of this forum and trust that all the appointed members will work together in

the interest of their community. We understand that, from now onwards, it will be easier for affected community members in times of disasters to get help from the disaster team, because they will know whom to report such cases to,” said Tshiila. One of the committee members who was selected in the advisory committee, Ms Azwinndini Magoro, said that it was important that communities, especially in the rural villages, would receive quick response from the disaster team as committee members would inform them in time.

Culture didn’t present Benny’s with any recognition during their provincial awards ceremony, the school has been doing well throughout the year. During the event on Sunday, Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula said the developing school team of the year award should go to a school that came from the rural or historically disadvantaged area, produced extraordinary consistency as a team, managed to conquer against all odds with limited resources and demonstrated essential values of teamwork, resilience, courage and excellence. The school’s managing director, Mr Benny Mufamadi, said the pupils and the entire staff were over the moon with the award. He said Limpopo was “the province of stars” and that they were expecting more next year. “The sky is the limit,” said Mufamadi. Premier Stanley Mathabatha also congratulated Benny’s with their achievement. “It means that we are doing something good in Limpopo.
