aanvaar.

Nou is jy in ‘n beter plek … Sonder seer, hartseer, worries, ens. “Jy dink jy was minder. Ek is jammer … So het Nortjé). Foto verskaf.

haar ander suster, Priscilla Boshoff, haar sussie opgesom.

journey. “This was the biggest disappointment of my trip. I needed to catch I lift through the park, and this after I had initially received permission, but it was withdrawn,” said Dave. As he neared the finish line this week, however, Dave said that the positive far outweighed the negative aspects of his walk. “Among the highlights of my journey is the unbelievably friendly people of Namibia. Then there was the day I crossed the mountain before Khowarib. It was extremely tough going, with several steep inclines. But that feeling of accomplishment that washes over you if you finish on the other side is absolutely overwhelming!” said Dave. Dave added that the lodges that had given him a place to sleep were also a real blessing. “You could take a bit of a breather from the walking and the heat. You could also enjoy a decent meal. But I also enjoyed my ‘bush camps’ along the way – to sleep between the wild animals and to enjoy the starry night skies. There is something beautiful about the peace and quiet,” said Dave. Every time Dave has gone on a walkabout through Africa has been for a cause. This time around, he and his trusted cart called the Bart Mobile Mark2 walked in support of Desert Lion Conservation. “I thoroughly enjoy walking through this hard but beautiful part of the world

Dave wraps up yet another desert trek Intrepid adventurer Dave van Graan looked set to reach his Namib coast destination of Henties Bay on Tuesday after yet another of his epic walks, this time from the Epupa Falls in Kaokoland over a distance of almost 800km. This 64-year-old adventurer set off from Epupa Falls on 21 November this year and, at stages, the going was tough. “The extreme heat was the worst,” Dave told the Zoutpansberger in a WhatsApp message over the weekend. Getting hold of him is not easy, as the route he was following does not have cellphone reception everywhere. He was referring to the 40°C plus daytime temperatures he experienced on his desert trek. “And those Mopani flies! They made me crazy,” said Dave. Malnutrition was also a bit of a problem. “My food is also not that great. I am hungry all the time. All you eat is soya bean mince, Toppers and pasta. You can also only eat so much Bully Beef!” writes Dave, adding a smiley-face emoji. What he was not smiling about was the fact that the Namibian authorities had refused him a permit to walk through a section of the Skeleton Coast National Park as part of his 800km

at my own, slow pace. I did not have one flat tyre and my Bart Mobile is ready for a couple more trips. The fact that I was never injured or got sick was a bonus as this can ruin your trip. I did not even cramp or suffer blisters,” said Dave. On Monday, Dave was taking a break at Cape Cross Lodge, with just under 60 km to go to Henties Bay. “I will spend my last night in the desert here and am hoping to finish in Henties Bay tomorrow,” said Dave. Asked if he is planning to do a trip like this again, Dave’s answer was a definite yes! “For sure will I do it again! I now have a year to think of something new. Maybe a trip in a donkey cart? It will definitely be easier then pulling this trolley along the whole time. But I will see,” said Dave. At the time of our going to press on Tuesday, uncertainty existed if Dave had reached his destination. If everything went according to plan, Dave was aiming to start returning home on Thursday.

SPCA asks residents to please say no to fireworks this festive season SPCA News The Louis Trichardt SPCA has once again appealed to residents to say NO to fireworks this festive season. The reason for this as that animals are far more sensitive to smells and sounds than humans, so the booms, bangs and whistles humans experience are amplified and downright deafening to them. They become flustered and panicked and will do almost anything to escape – very often getting hurt in the process. The local SPCA have seen animals impale themselves on palisade fences as they try to escape the noise. Some are struck down by vehicles. According to the Explosives Act No 26 of 1956, discharging any firework in any building, on any public thoroughfare or in any public place or resort without prior written permission of the municipality (Section 10.34) is unlawful. Section 10.35 relates to public displays of fireworks and states that no person or organisation is allowed to present a fireworks display unless formally authorised to do so by the municipality (at least 14 days’ notice). In terms of the Explosives Act, no person shall allow or permit any children under the age of 16 to handle or use fireworks except under the supervision of an adult

person. Fireworks may also not be sold by street vendors, hawkers or at any informal open-air facility. Anyone who wishes to sell fireworks must be in possession of a valid permit issued in terms of the Explosives Act. The local SPCA urged the public to report the illegal discharging of fireworks. They can do so by following the complaints protocol. This entails that persons must ask for an incident report number when phoning the police’s charge office at Tel 015 519 4300 to report the illegal discharging of fireworks. The SPCA also gave a couple of tips for pet owners on how to keep their pets safe while fireworks are discharged: * Firstly, and most obvious of all – do not support shops that sell fireworks and do not attend firework displays. You cannot go preaching if you are a part of the problem! * Choose to stay at home on New Year’s Eve – your family and friends will understand and support your decision. You can always catch up later when the madness has passed. * Make sure your pets are wearing an appropriately fitted collar and with a name tag and telephone number, in case a mishap occurs, and your pets are scared into fleeing. Microchipping your pets is highly recommended.

* First prize would be for all your pets to be in your home with you, with the TV or radio on (at the normal level) to somewhat drown out the sounds from outside. But if you simply cannot keep your pets inside, please make sure they have shelter, somewhere safe and comfortable where they can hide from the scary scents and noises. * Distract pets showing slight signs of distress with some of their favourite things. Please, never punish your pet’s reactions to fireworks – this is not something they can control, and they look to you for comfort. If you act normal, they will hopefully take their cues from you and chill! * If your pets are excessively distraught by loud noises, visiting your vet a few days in advance to discuss tranquilising or sedating options is advisable. * Before letting your animals outside when nature calls, do a sweep of your yard to make sure no hazards are lying around. Even spent fireworks contain harmful chemicals that can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and, in severe cases, seizures, tremors, liver and/or kidney failure if ingested. To report animals in distress, injured or being abused this festive season, phone inspector Lawrence Khodobo at Tel 082 965 5151 or Alicia Thomas at Tel 084 900 5332.

Festive messages from our mayors Promote peace and Covid made life difficult, but by safety and fight GBV God’s grace we survived 2021 Mayor’s Message The festive season is upon us. Families and friends are going to gather and club together to celebrate this eventful year and the year ahead. We must do so responsibly. We would like to appeal to motorists and pedestrians to take extra care on the roads. Let us all obey the traffic rules to enable us to arrive alive, and importantly, let us not drink and drive. The scourge of the Covid pandemic is still rife. This virus does not take a holiday. Let us continue to adhere

to the prescribed health protocols by wearing masks, washing our hands regularly, sanitising and keeping a social distance of 1.5m. We are also urging those who have not yet been vaccinated to do so. During this festive season, we must promote peace and safety within our living environments, and work in partnership with law-enforcement agencies in our societies in combating gender-based violence and femicide. We will continue with our quest to bring and deliver quality services to our communities. On behalf of Makhado Municipality, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a prosperous

new year. - Cllr Ntavhanyeni Samuel Munyai, mayor of Makhado Local Municipality.

Mayor’s Message It has been a very long and difficult year, but by God’s grace we have made it. Many have lost their loved ones and family members after having succumbed to the Covid-19 pandemic and other situations. May they all be comforted and God be with them. We are at that time again, the festive season. This is when we spend time with family, friends and loved ones.

I would like to remind our people to continue following Covid-19 protocols, so that we can minimize the risk of spreading of Covid-19. I encourage our people to use this time well and be with family, loved ones and friends because we are living in an era where tomorrow is promised to no one. We urge motorists and pedestrians that they should observe road signs and traffic regulations at all times to avoid road accidents. From the office of the executive mayor, and all protocol observed, we would like to wish you blessed festive season, Merry Christmas and blessed New Year. - Executive mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality Dowelani Nenguda.

We are prepared to welcome all Share your blessings with those less fortunate

Mayor’s Message Our municipality is very different from all other municipalities in Vhembe. This is because we are strategically located along the border between South Africa and Zimbabwe. This puts us under extreme pressure of receiving thousands of people and vehicles passing through our town during festive seasons. Despite the huge influx, we are fully prepared to receive everyone, and we will be working with various law-enforcement agencies to make sure that everyone who is in transit or staying in Musina should be safe this festive season. We all know that the festive season is the time to come together with family and

friends. We must also keep in mind that our country is now officially in the fourth wave of the Covid 19 pandemic. When celebrating with family members and friends, we all have to adapt to the new normal by observing all the health protocols to curb the spread of the coronavirus. We should try by all means to avoid large gatherings, which have been identified as one of the super spreaders of this pandemic. A very big warning to those who think that Musina is a playing ground for criminals! Our law-enforcement agencies are already out in full force to make sure that those who break the law are subjected to the strongest legal disciplinary action. We call upon our people to report any criminal offence to the police. We humbly request those who drink alcohol to do so responsibly. Our law-enforcement agencies will never tolerate drunken driving and public drinking. Even pedestrians are warned not to drink and walk aimlessly in the streets because this contributes to high number of accidents in our roads. Those who are travelling

should make sure that their vehicles are roadworthy at all times. If you are driving for a long distance, take a rest every two hours to refresh your mind and body. Finally, let us spend wisely this festive season because we still need the cash to sustain our lives at the beginning of the new year. Wishing you merry Christmas and a prosperous 2022. - Cllr Nkhanedzeni Godfrey Mawela, mayor of Musina Municipality

Mayor’s Message On behalf of the Thulamela Local Municipal council, I am honoured to share our festive message with you. We are sharing this message in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic in which we have lost family members and friends. This year we also draw strength from the life of Charlotte Maxeke. Throughout her life, Maxeke championed the potential of African people, especially women, to stand up and take control of their

affairs. I urge you all to go for vaccinations as we continue to sanitise, maintain social distancing and wear masks. Working together, we have lifted millions of people out of poverty and provided houses, electricity, and sanitation to impoverished households. As a society, we are also faced with the scourge of gender-based violence (GBV), which has resulted in the loss of precious lives of our women. We therefore call on men to play a leading part to stop this pandemic by speaking out and reporting GBV, in raising awareness and peer education. In the spirit of this festive season, I urge all of you to remember those who are less fortunate and practice giving and sharing with those in need. Let me also take this opportunity to congratulate the class of 2021 as they anticipate their final matric results. We are convinced that you will make us proud. We are also calling on all

drivers to be safe on the roads this festive season. Don’t drink and drive, and please Arrive Alive! Let us work together with our law-enforcement agencies to ensure we are all safe during this festive We wish you all a Merry Christmas and joyous festivities with your family and friends. - Mayor of Thulamela Municipality - Cllr AS Rambuda

Psalm 19:4. Lees die hele Psalm.

ikwels spreek stilte harder en duideliker as woorde; dan word ‘n woordelose boodskap ‘n onvergeetlike les. Dit bied vertroosting, versterk vertroue en bewerk dikwels ‘n keerpunt by ‘n kruispad. - Ds. Johan Marais (Louis Trichardt Baptistekerk)
