Hiermee saam moet die Departement van Vervoer se Design and Implementation of Speed Humps:

Supplement to National Guidelines for Traffic Calming, gelees word.

Illegal dumping is becoming a very serious challenge in Musina. This was revealed by a member of Musina Municipality’s executive committee, Cllr Nkele Milanzi. Milanzi was addressing community members who had volunteered to clean several illegal dumping terrains around Nancefield Township last Thursday. She said that taking the lead in cleaning up these areas was important for the municipality, so that ordinary people could easily understand that illegal dumping was a serious health risk. She told the volunteers that the municipality had a suitable dumping site, but she could not understand why people kept on dumping waste everywhere. “Despite limited resources, we do our best to make sure that refuse is collected at house

holds at all times. We have also provided skip bins around var ious areas in the township for our people to throw their waste in. But it is very disturbing when you see a person opting to throw waste on the ground instead of depositing it in the provided skip bins. It should always be our normal practice that we do not just throw waste all over our habitat.” She said besides causing dis eases, illegal dumping was very dangerous to the environment and it also turned tourists away. “If our area is clean, it attracts

tourists, thereby boosting the economy of our municipality. Tourists will never want to visit an area that is not clean. Be sides the tourism point of view, we will suffer the consequences because our health system will not be able to cope due to the diseases caused by pollution.” One of the volunteers who took part in the cleaning campaign is Takalani Rambau. She said: “As a caring citizen, I am also very worried and concerned about the mush rooming of illegal dumps in our township.”

Enough is enough, say Louis Trichardt residents By Denise van Bergen Poor service delivery at government institutions is something that residents of Louis Trichardt have been fighting against for so many years now that they have long since accepted it with resignation. The lowered standards of the once proud civil service have apparently become the norm and have given officials at these institutions full right not to offer anything more than what residents now have to be satisfied with. In fact, the general feeling among the bigger part of the community seems to be that service delivery by government officials just keeps deteriorating, and people are fed-up. Not so much because duties are performed with so little pride, but because of the gruelling dis comfort it creates in people’s daily lives. “Something has to be done,” frustrated residents complain. However, the question is when someone will take responsibility to not only address poor service delivery but do something constructive about it? The Department of Labour’s office in Louis Trichardt takes the spotlight this week after a resident had been trying for more than three weeks just to get assisted at this office. Kyla Hopkins gave birth to her baby on 8 October this year and had to apply for a ma ternity grant for the period of her maternity leave. She said she had been told to come back later for three weeks, because the officer who had to assist her was not there, or their system was offline, or the whole team was having lunch outside with no-one assisting the public inside. “The worst part is that, every time I had to go back, I had to take my baby with me because they required ‘proof ’ that I had really given birth to a baby, even though I had the birth certificate to show,” she said. On Tuesday, 10 November, Hopkins went

back once again with the hope that she might actually make progress. However, when she got there, the security guard told her that the office was closed “because the government doesn’t supply them with a cleaner”. At that point, Hopkins decided that enough was enough and came knocking on the news paper’s door. The Zoutpansberger spoke to the provincial communications officer for the Department of Labour, Lerato Mashamba. She confirmed that the department’s office in Louis Trichardt was still closed on Friday, 13 November, due to “internal issues” and apologized to the public for the inconvenience. She could not elaborate on what these issues were. On Monday, 16 November, the office was operational again. Regarding Hopkin’s complaint of being sent back and forth for weeks with her baby without being assisted, Mashamba said that she could only sincerely apologize to Hopkins on behalf of the department. “That is not how the department operates,” she said. According to Mashamba, for officials to require a baby as “proof ” when someone applies for maternity benefits was “not the norm”. “It is either that or a birth certificate. Departmental officials are familiar with the processes and procedures. There could have been some misunderstanding between the cli ent and the alleged official who was assisting her,” she said, but gave her assurance that the situation at the Louis Trichardt office would be investigated. The department encourages the public to utilize their online services at www.labour.gov. za. Those who want to check their UIF status can contact 0800 843 843.

We urge the government to help us in this regard.” Wellknown Musina entrepreneur Jack Klaff urged the minister to intervene in the water challenges in Musina. He said they had enough water in Musina, but the daily supply was a problem because of administrative issues. He said if the water supply became stable, farmers would be able to work easily while food security and job creation would get a major boost.

Wyle oom Kobie Cronjé (81). Foto verskaf.

Take good care of the man in your life this Thursday Mental Health With International Men’s Day being celebrated today (19 November), Ms Friede Meissenheimer, senior social worker of the Louis Trichardt SAVF (South African Women’s Federation), urged families to take extra good care of the men in their lives. International Men’s Day takes place annually on 19 November and the six pillars of Inter national Men’s Day are designed to promote

positive role models; to celebrate men’s positive contributions to society; to focus on men’s health and wellbeing; to highlight discrimination against men; to improve gender relations and promote gender equality; and to create a safer, better world. “The theme for 2020 is ‘Better health for Men and Boys’. With the year being as unpredictable and challenging as it was, mental health was one of the biggest areas of focus. Feeling isolated from family and friends, job losses and financial insecurity all contributed to an increase in men tal health issues, such as depression and anxiety,” said Meissenheimer. She added that, in general, men were much less likely to talk about mental health issues. “The perception is often that men need to be strong, and having depression is unfortunately still seen as a weakness by many people. How ever, any person can be affected by depression,” said Meissenheimer. Regarding this, she added that on 2 April 2018, Dwayne “The Rock” John son had tweeted: “We all go through the same sludge, and depression never discriminates. Took me a long time to realise, but the key is to not be afraid to open up. Especially us dudes have a tendency to keep it in. You’re not alone”. Meissenheimer gave some helpful tips to find out whether someone you care about is suffering from depression. The most common symptoms are feeling sad or empty most of the time; loss of interest or pleasure in activities that were once enjoyed; feeling hopeless about life; feeling helpless or guilty; changes in sleeping habits; changes in eating habits; loss of energy or feeling fatigued; restlessness, irritability or anger; difficulty concentrating; and thoughts of death or suicide. “If you recognise these symptoms in yourself or someone you care about, please make an appointment with a GP or psychologist for further assistance,” urged Meissenheimer. She said people are welcome to contact the local SAVF on 015 516 3841 or 071 628 7949 for more help.

Military veterans remember fallen comrades

GRAFTED MACADAMIA TREE’S FOR SALE

Ad designed by Zoutnet Publishers

On Sunday, 15 November, members of the South African armed forces, military veterans and civilians remebered those who had made the ultimate sacrifice in service of their country as part of Armistice Day, also called Remembrance Day. At 05:00 on Monday, 11 November 1918, a document was signed that brought an end to the First World War. At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of that year, the guns fell silent. The war that was supposed to end all wars had come to an end, but not before an estimated nine million people had lost their lives. To pay homage those who died in the war and subsequent wars, Remembrance Day was also commemorated at the MOTH’s Turbi Hills Shell Hole in Louis Trichardt. Among those who paid tribute to his fallen comrades was the 93-year-old Ron Rose (born 14 August 1927) who laid a wreath on behalf of those who died during the Second World War. Rose is the only Second World War survivor of the Turbi Hills Shellhole. Photo supplied.

Foto verskaf.

Tent oor straat ontwrig weer verkeer Regs: Verkeer is weereens die afgelope week in ‘n woonbuurt van Louis Trichardt ontwrig, nadat ‘n inwoner doodeenvoudig ‘n tent oor die straat opgeslaan het vir ‘n funksie. Hierdie tent is blykbaar al Saterdag onwettig oor Waterbessiestraat opgeslaan. Foto verskaf.

KFC and Cricket SA prepare for 2021 With the Covid-19 restrictions gradually lifting, various sporting codes are gearing up to resume their activities and their development programmes. One such sport is cricket, and last Friday, Cricket South Africa and sponsor KFC held a virtual Mini-Cricket Provincial Seminar to discuss the development of junior cricket. The virtual meeting assisted in laying the foundation for the return of KFC Mini-Cricket, once government gives the go-ahead. The games are expected to kickstart early in 2021. Currently, 18 schools are participating in the KFC Mini-Cricket programme in the Vhembe District, as well as 36 volunteer coaches (teach ers), with two coaches at each school. “The virtual seminar (was) expected to reig nite the passion for the game and continue to

instil skills and information that will help grow the sport we love,” said Cricket SA’s mass-partici pation coordinator, Buhle Motshegoa, in a media statement. KFC Mini-Cricket is a foundation stage in the development of South Africa’s future crick eting heroes and is the first phase in Cricket SA’s pipeline to the Proteas, constituting the country’s biggest grassroots sports-development programme. Ten primary schools are participating in the Vhembe District, namely Bergvlam, Dzingahe, Makwarela, Mbaleni, Mbilwana, J.R Tshika lange, John Marubini, Ratshitanga, Tshilambu vhe, and Tshivhulani. Nationally, 126 642 pupils from 6 617 schools are active in the KFC Mini-Cricket programme, coached by 13 673 volunteer coaches.
