“’n Rukkie later hy my vriendin my teruggebel. Sy was in ‘n toestand. “Toe ek by my ma se huis aankom,

Edward Vele, a car guard at the mall, phoned Ndou, telling her that he had spotted the handbag inside a trolley on that Saturday afternoon. “I did not know where the owner was, so I later took it home with me,” Vele said. He lives at Mpheni village, near Elim. “On Sunday, I opened the bag to look for a contact number and fortunately found a small clinic book with her cellphone number in it. I called her and we arranged to meet at the mall on Monday,” he said. Ndou had the highest praise for Vele’s honesty. “All my belonging were still there. Nothing was missing, not even the money. I’m so thankful to him and when I’m in Makhado, I’ll never use another parking bay but the one that he guards,” she said.

Marthie was bekend as ‘n raakvat boervrou. Voorwaar was sy ‘n bobaas bakster! Ouma Marthie se boerewors resep is haar ‘legacy’.

The overall winner of the Zoutpansberger’s photo-novel competition is Nyandano Ramushweu from Ridgeway College. Nyandano came up against strong opposition from his fellow schoolmates. Zwothe Thotori send in some really good entries and the judges were especially impressed with her willingness to tackle social issues such as gender violence. Dede Bessong’s entry was delightful and Xirimbi Baloyi also entered a highly enjoyable story. In the end, the overall winner’s prize of R1 000 was awarded to Nyandano, because he had entered two winning entries, as opposed to the single winning entries of the other competitors. pay their officials a ‘danger fee’ during the hard lockdown period as officials were forced to look after the prisoners amidst the Covid pandemic. “They [the prison] did not qualify to claim at all – for nobody,” said Kganyago. He reiterated the fact that nobody at the prison had taken a pay cut or pay reduction during this time. “They were working throughout,” said Kganyago. Kganyago said that SACM initially said they would pay back the money. “They volunteered to pay back this money, this R6,2 million. Their intention was to pay, so that this thing can go away. We said ‘No, you pay it, but it is still fraud, what you did’. Now it looks like they do not want to pay it anymore,” said Kganyago. Of the R6,2 million paid to SACM, Kganyago said, only about R2 million was paid over to staff members. The newspaper then wanted to know if private individuals were suspected to have benefited from the remaining R4 million? “We don’t know. The fact is, R6,2 million was paid from TERS to the SACM. The company took some two point something million rand to pay the ‘danger fee’ and kept the rest,” said Kganyago. Although the KSCC is privately owned and managed by SACM, they operate under the auspices of the Department of Correctional Service (DCS). The Zoutpansberger therefore asked the DCS to comment on

the investigation as their contract with SACM prohibits SACM from speaking to the media. In response, Mr Singabakho Nxumalo, the national spokesperson for the DCS, said that the SIU’s probe was based on information provided by “dismissed and disgruntled employees who were paid the Covid-19 allowance before they were dismissed in April and May 2020 by the contractor, South African Custodial Management (SACM) at the Kutama-Sinthumule Correctional Centre”. “The dismissed duo were paid Covid-19 allowances in April and May 2020 financial year as there was a circular issued ordering that staff members working at correctional centres be paid an additional Special Danger Allowance on top of the allowances which they normally receive,” said Nxumalo. Nxumalo stated that the SACM at Kutama-Sinthumule Correctional Centre was then

informed that they did not qualify to submit the UIF claim because the company had not closed for a period of two weeks. “The contractor is in the process of paying back the money to the UIF. There was an overpayment of about R4,3 million which was paid with that particular claim. SACM then notified the fund [UIF] on two occasions about the overpayment and requested UIF to provide banking details where the money should be paid. Unfortunately, there was no response to the emails sent to the UIF,” said Nxumalo. He concluded by stating that all this information had been provided to the SIU, together with supporting documents.

Zoutpansberger

REMEMBRANCE DAY On Sunday, 14

November, the South African National Defence Force, military veterans and civilians will spend two minutes remembering those who had made the ultimate sacrifice in service of their country as part of Armistice Day, also called Remembrance Day. At 05:00 on Monday, 11 November 1918, a document was signed that brought an end to the First World War. At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of that year, the guns fell silent. The war that was supposed to end all wars had come to an end, but not before an estimated nine million people had lost their lives. To pay homage those who died in the war and subsequent wars, Remembrance Day is commemorated annually. The Memorable Order of Tin Hats (MOTH) of Louis Trichardt will be holding their annual Remembrance Day parade and wreath-laying ceremony on 14 November at 10:30 for 11:00 at their Turbi Hills Shell Hole at 66 Burger Street. All members of the public are welcome to attend.

ZOUTPANSBERGER, 1 OKTOBER 2021

Water shortages for Soutpansberg soon to be resolved Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation Ms Dikeledi Magadzi said that water challenges in the communities of Kutama-Sinthumule and Louis Trichardt would hopefully soon be a thing of the past after certain problems had finally been resolved regarding the Sinthu-

mule-Kutama Bulk Water Supply Project. The problems that hindered progress include the Vuwani Pipeline, where construction started in October 2014. The project was supposed to be completed in 2017, but still has not produced sufficient water for the communities. Magadzi, joined by the executive mayor of Vhembe District Municipality, Dowelani Nenguda, Limpopo Provincial Director of the Department of Water and Sanitation Ms Lucy Kobe and the project manager for the Sinthumule-Kutama Bulk Water Supply Project, Mr Ndivhuwo Muthige, went on a fact-finding mission during a visit to the project site along the Thohoyandou-Louis Trichardt Road on Monday, 20 September. “I came here to avail myself with what exactly the issues are here that cause this project to take so long,” Magadzi said. “One of the problems indicated had to do with pipes that had to pass through a certain farm that caused trouble, but that had been resolved. The water license was another issue that took a long time to be resolved, as well as the procurement programme and process at the Department of Water and Sanitation, in particular the procurement of the jacking of the pipes. Twenty-one (21) days from today (20 September), the bid will be closed, and people will be on site to deal with these issues,” Magadzi said. She expects these problems to be resolved within two months. Another topic for discussion was the fact that the Nandoni Dam’s pump station produces only 60 megalitres of water per day and should be augmented to produce 100 megalitres per day, so

Friday’s gymkhana event at Lalapanzi Hotel was no real challenge for this 1972 Steyr-Puch Haflinger of Charles Leach. These little trucks were manufactured between 1959 and 1975 by the Austrian firm Steyr-Daimler-Puch and were exported all over the world. Charles recruited Adri van Zyl to be his passenger and place the cups on the sticks as they rushed through the course. They had to be content with a second place overall, however, after being beaten by the father-and-son combination of Anton and Elardus van Zyl in a 1959 Austin-Healey Sprite.

Leon le Roux in aksie in die karrol item waar hy ‘n kar vier keer in 60 sekondes moes rol. Hierin eindig hy derde. Foto verskaf.

Foto verskaf.

My vrou is ‘n ware steunpilaar en motiveer my baie,” het Le Roux gesê. “So, Louis Trichardt, maak reg vir SA Sterkman 2022!” het Le Roux gesê.

Eliz-Mari shines at XCO Champs with national fourth place Two of Louis Trichardt’s promising young cyclists, Eliz-Mari Pretorius (18) and Andani Raphalalani (16), really excelled during the final round of the South African XCO Championships in Pietermaritzburg the past weekend. Eliz-Mari, a matric learner at High School Louis Trichardt, took a well-fought-for national fourth place in the Junior women’s category at the weekend’s race. For her this was a very stressful race as she partook in her first SA XCO Championships. “During the race I could feel the adrenaline

kick in and my heart was pounding. But it was great fun to race my first SA Championship and to see all the girls. Everyone was so enthusiastic and ready to race. It was very serious at the starting line, but everyone was very happy to be there, and I didn’t even fall once, considering the difficult track,” said Eliz-Mari. Her preparation leading up to the weekend’s race was very intense, especially the last week as she wanted everything to go as planned. Eliz-Mari said she had enjoyed the race from start to the finish, adding that the supporters from the Limpopo Province had greatly contributed to her performance. “It was one of my best cycling experiences thus far. The atmosphere

and the people contributed to make it more than just a race,” said Eliz-Mari. Andani, who took part only last weekend and finished third in the gruelling Magoeba Stage Race Challenge, performed very well on this difficult track, taking 34th place in the Youth men’s category. With no stress before the race and not feeling the expected amount of power in his legs, Andani found the race a bit weird at first but managed to finish exceptionally well. Unfortunately, because of the prevailing circumstances, the crowds were not as big, but a few sections of the course indeed did have groups of people cheering the riders on as they passed. Andani mentioned that even though he was tired, the

spectators always found a way to cheer him on and that specific section of the course suddenly got a lot easier. For Andani, last weekend’s stage race was important preparation for him. He had to make sure to perform well in the stage race, but not to overtrain in order to do well in the SA XCO Champs. For the non-cyclists who may not grasp the difficulty of the track in Pietermaritzburg, known as Cascades, it hosted the Mountain Biking Downhill World Championships in 2013, which saw local and possibly one of the greatest MTB Downhill racers of all time, Greg Minnaar, win the race and defend his world title.

plek gekry.

Ek was 18 jaar ouer as die oudste jong atleet.
