Totsiens Kremetart?

top name in fietsrygeledere ingesluit.

Huge public outcry over “mass” paupers burial By Elmon Tshikhudo

Farmer Baldwin Maboko stands next to the place where the 17 unknown bodies were buried.

Constructors busy with their work at the site of the extension of Musina Municipaly’s offices.

R5 million to extend municipal offices Municipal News

The Musina Municipality has started with a project of extending the municipal offices in Musina at a cost of R5 million. The scope of work includes the construction of new council chambers, offices and ablution facilities. The communications manager of Musina Municipality, Mr Wilson Dzebu, said there was a need to extend the offices because the municipality had grown. “Before the recent local government elections, we had a total of six wards and 12 councillors. We now have 12 wards and 24 councillors, which takes

us a step further from a plenary to an executive municipality. One small example is of our current council chamber, which can no longer accommodate all the councillors and management because of the growth of the municipality. The old chamber has a capacity to accommodate 60 people and the new one will house more than 120 people.” Dzebu said the construction was not only going to boost the infrastructure of the municipality, but assisted in creating job opportunities for local people. “Some people who were formerly unemployed are now able to put something on their tables. Apart from earning money, they

will be able to acquire skills that they will use independently to get some income after the completion of the project. This is what we call community empowerment.” He advised community members to take good care of the infrastructure after completion. “The fact that the infrastructure is located in the municipal offices does not necessarily mean that it belongs solely to the municipality. Damaging infrastructure creates setbacks as more money will be diverted from service delivery to the repairs and maintenance. We all have the responsibility to make sure that these buildings are safe at all times.”

same sentiment that the bad smell would ultimately make them sick if the graves were not covered properly. The owner of the farm next to the cemetery, Ms Pauline Mabogo, said the burial of the 17 people had inconvenienced her a great deal. “We have seen people being dumped in a mass grave like in war situations. No matter where they come from, the dead deserve respect. We are so disappointed to hear that this was done by our own people who know our culture very well.” She added that she was worried that her employees no longer wanted to work next to the cemetery because of the bad smell. “They have been complaining for the whole of last week and I fear that they will get sick at any given time if the municipality and the hospital do not do their homework well and rectify their mistake,” she said. Asked to comment about the burial, Makhado municipality spokesperson Louis Bobodi said that the municipality had buried the dead according to approved standard specifications. “There is nothing unbecoming here and the marking of graves would be done by the hospital,” he said. According to residents of the Thulamela Municipality, the situation at the Mbaleni graveyard that is used by the Thulamela Municipality to bury unknown people leaves much to be desired. Most of the graves are unmarked, some are sinking, while the rest could not be identified because of the dense bushes there. Residents are also complaining that the graveyard has become a safe haven for criminals who run to the bushes and hide there after stealing from the community. Asked about the state of the graveyard at Mbaleni, Thulamela Mayor Mushoni Tshifhango said the last time they had a burial there last year, the gravesite was clean. “We have personnel tasked with the clearing of the gravesite and maybe it is because of the heavy rains that there are bushes. The unmarked graves are as a result of the hospitals we work with being unable to identify the deceased. I am going to make a follow-up and see how we can remedy the situation,” he said.

Death is treated with the utmost respect in the African culture and the dead should be given a decent send-off. The opposite proved to be the case with 17 unknown people who were buried as paupers, allegedly by the Makhado Municipality and the staff from Elim hospital. The bodies were apparently just dumped at a secluded steep slope in part of the Waterval cemetery, far away from the other graves. The burial, which has left tongues wagging, took place a fortnight ago and was witnessed by herdsmen, who were looking after livestock in bushes near there. According to information at this newspaper’s disposal, the bodies are believed to be mostly foreigners. The bodies arrived at around 16:00 in two open trucks, allegedly belonging to the Makhado Local Municipality. The witnesses said many of those who came to bury the dead were women and a few men, who did their burial in a huff. “We were busy looking for our livestock at our farm that is adjacent to the cemetery when we were overwhelmed by a heavy smell, which we thought was that of a cow that could have died in the bushes. As we got closer to the cemetery, the smell became very intoxicating, but there was no carcass. We only found out that the smell emanated from the graves that were at the corner of our farm. The graves were partly closed and looked very shallow,” said Mr Baldwin Maboko, whose family owns a farm near the new cemetery. Maboko further indicated that it became evident that something had not been done well and they were on the receiving end because they could not even breathe as a result of the disgusting odour. He added that they started avoiding the part closest to the cemetery but could not avoid it completely as livestock would go there in search of grazing. According to him, the bad smell is making life very difficult for them and they cannot perform their duties well and fear that they will soon get sick if nothing is done to rectify the mistake. Mr Lucas Maszive, who witnessed the burial, described it as very inhumane. “I have never seen anything like this in my life. Firstly the dead were brought in two open trucks and were offloaded in a very inhumane way into the graves, with some of the graves containing two coffins. The graves were not even marked and did not have numbers on them. The graves were on a steep slope and were all covered with loose soil that will be washed away when the rain comes.” He added that he was very disappointed, “even if it is foreigners being buried, they Farm owner Ms Pauline Maboko, who says the smell adversely deserve dignity as they are also affects her business. She is appealing to the government to do its human beings”. He echoed the homework and to rectify its mistakes.

Hy kan geskakel word by tel. 082 493 3897.

AfriForum ready to drag VDM back to High Court By Isabel Venter

AfriForum’s branch in Louis Trichardt is almost ready to drag the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) back to court. Almost five years have passed since the local AfriForum branch managed to get a High Court order that forced the VDM to deliver a reliable and consistent flow of water to residents in and around Louis Trichardt. On Tuesday, local AfriForum chairman Mr Wally Schultz confirmed that the new court papers have been delivered to the VDM Mayor, Cllr Florence Radzilani. Schultz explained that AfriForum were out for VDM’s blood because of the unsecured and dysfunctional state of the town’s existing borehole infrastructure. “The project [boreholes] was worth R20 million and is now in a state of total dysfunction,” said Schultz. The new court order will ask the court to force the VDM to re-instate this borehole project. According to Schultz, this option is preferable to replacing the Alabsini pipeline (currently Louis Trichardt’s

primary water source) as it will ensure a constant water supply to town. Replacing the Albasini pipeline, Schultz explained, is not practical as the Nandoni Dam project is scheduled to replace it. The question remains exactly when the Nandoni project will be completed. The project has been slowed down time and again because of court cases and incompetent contractors. “Residents cannot be expected to ‘wait and see’,” said Schultz. “They need water now. Therefore, the only realistic and workable route to follow is for the VDM to start from scratch and implement the borehole action plan,” he added. In addition to the borehole plan, AfriForum will also petition the court to reconstitute the previous water steering committee to oversee the borehole action plan as it had been ordered in the first court order that was awarded to them in 2012. “The plight of desperate residents cannot be ignored any longer. They cannot be forced to endure constant water stoppages. It’s inhuman and unconstitutional,” said Schultz. He added they they have set a court date in the South Gauteng High Court to hear their case on 28 March.

31 suspects arrested over weekend Crime Prevention

It was a busy weekend for the Makhado police, who succeeded in nabbing a total of 31 suspects. Over the course of the weekend, a total of nine suspects were arrested in and around Louis Trichardt for drinking liquor in a public or open space. Another five suspects were caught driving under the influence of liquor, while three sus-

pects were arrested for driving without a valid driver’s license. In the Vleyfontein area, the police caught three suspects allegedly connected to a case of robbery in the area. In addition, a charge of the possession of an illegal firearm was also added against the three. Three more suspects were arrested in Louis Trichardt after being found in possession of dagga. Another four suspects were

caught for selling illegal copies of CDs and DVDs, while three more suspects were arrested and charged with malicious damage to property. A 25-year-old suspect was also to appear in court for allegedly employing a Zimbabwean citizen without the necessary work permit. Similarly, all the other arrested suspects were due to appear in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court during the week.

Signing off on the last documents that were required for AfriForum’s urgent cout application against the VDM are, from left to right, Gert van der Westhuizen (witness), Celeste Venter (local attorney), Corné Smith (AfriForum deputy chairman) and Wally Schultz (AfriForum chairman). Photo supplied.

Gewapende rowers slaan weer toe Deur Isabel Venter

Makhado munisipale woordvoerder mnr.

Daar is

Research shows bats are a natural pest control Agriculture

The macadamia industry could be saving themselves millions of rands in possible crop damages by using bats to control crop pests. Photo supplied.

One set of cages keeps birds and bats from feeding off the insects on and around the trees. A second set enables both bats and birds to access the insects day and night. The third set of cages is closed in the evenings, to exclude bats and nocturnal birds, and the fourth set is closed in the daytime, to exclude birds that are active in the day. Photo supplied.

A collaborative research project between Green Farms Nut Company (GFNC), South Africa’s largest privately owned processor and marketer of macadamia nuts, four of their suppliers, the macadamia industry body SAMAC, and the University of Venda (Univen) is proving the commercial value to the industry of using bats and birds to control insects that damage the crop. The project has been designed and is being managed by Univen’s South African Research Chair’s Initiative (SARChI), and results from the first year, which covers the 2016 and 2017 macadamia-growing seasons, already provide clear evidence that crop damage increases when bats and birds are excluded from orchards. The damage is caused by stinkbugs, moths, and nut borers. GFNC has made orchards on two of the farms owned by Green Farms director Alan Whyte in the Levubu area available to the research project. Three of its suppliers, viz. Fritz Ahrens, Jaco Roux and Alistair Stewart, and his farm manager, Branden Jardim, all in the Levubu, Thohoyandou and Louis Trichardt areas, are also participating in the project. Researchers Valerie Linden and Sina Weier have put up 48 cages in trees on the six farms. The nuts from the caged trees are then sampled to establish the percentage of damage caused by insects under these controlled conditions. Linden and Weier have been trained at the GFNC to identify the specific types of damage caused by the various insects. Weier is also focusing on the

feeding patterns of the bats and birds, using their droppings to establish which insects they are feeding on in the orchards that are part of the study. This information will enable farmers to provide the right environment for encouraging specific bird and bat species to develop colonies around their orchards. “Before we started the study, we knew that the bats were feeding on false codling moths and stinkbugs,” says Linden, whose focus is the caged trees. “We’ve since established that certain species will also feed off the stinkbugs and that the bats will catch the insects in the air and take them off the leaves of the trees. Various species of birds have the same habits,” said Linden. Linden said that, based on this behaviour, and the kernel damage patterns, they had seen clearly this season that the bats and birds made a definitive contribution to reducing crop damage. Where bats and birds were excluded from the trees, kernel quality dropped. “We expect that biological control through the use of bats and birds will reduce the need for farmers to spray their trees. In turn, this will cut their production costs. And, because they will have less kernel damage, a higher percentage of their crop can be processed for export. Taken together, the savings on costs and the ability to market more of their crop will make their operations significantly more sustainable,” said Linden. Professor Peter Taylor, SARChI chair and supervisor of the project, said that stinkbug damage to macadamia orchards in South Africa was estimated to be between R50 million and R100 million per annum. “Economic models of the ‘avoided costs’ of bat predation on stinkbugs due to predation by bats on and around macadamia nut trees suggest that the current level of stinkbug damage would be doubled if bat populations in orchards were to become extinct. Any efforts to retain bat populations, through use of safe pesticides, retaining natural vegetation corridors and bat houses, should be strongly encouraged,” said Taylor.

Tydens dié besoek het me.

Vir meer inligting, skakel Pétria by tel. 082 555 1672 of Riana van die Erfenisstigting by 087 150 6582 of stuur ‘n e-pos aan haar by museum@ es.org.za.

Landbou gaan vanaf verenigde basis saamwerk Landbounuus

Our Water Wise Tips: Metaphorically speaking, if you had a tap leaking funds persistently from your bank account, you would not leave the matter unattended for long. So why would you not address a real leaking tap? Here are some helpful tips by the Department of Water and Sanitation on how to save water: * Close the tap while brushing teeth, shaving or soaping hands. * By installing aerators and flow-reducing valves, water can be saved relatively

Collecting the rain water National Water Week is an awareness-week campaign launched by the Department of Water and Sanitation, which serves as a powerful campaign to reiterate the value of water, the need for sustainable management of this scarce resource and the role water plays in eradicating poverty and underdevelopment in South Africa. The campaign seeks to continue building on the ongoing awareness creation within the broader South African community. This awareness creation is coupled with the responsibility that every citizen must take in ensuring the integrity of our water resources and their efficient use. As custodians of this awareness week, the Department of Water Affairs encourages all South Africans to focus on the need to restore and preserve the integrity

of this most precious resource, water. South Africans must take responsibility to make sure this scarce resource is managed in an effective and sustainable manner. In South Africa, National Water Week is celebrated from 16 to 22 March. Locally residents have been crippled by a lack of proper water service delivery, despite a higher-than-normal rainfall experienced at the beginning of 2017. According to the latest figures of the Department of Water and Sanitation, the Vhembe District’s ground and dam levels have been sufficiently replenished. Protecting and saving water is, however, still everyone’s business and one such a way is to collect and store rainwater. Collecting rainwater is an easy and inexpensive way for consumers to save water to be used later for gardening, landscaping and cleaning at home.

In Louis Trichardt, rain barrels can easily be substituted with regular water tanks that are easy to come by. Some companies sell tanks that are specifically designed to capture and store rainwater. For most houses, the water that falls on the roof inevitably finds its way into the downpipes. So, rather take advantage of this free water supply from the sky by simply connecting a rainwater-harvesting tank to a downpipe. While you do this, keeping your rainwater container dark and covered is important. Keeping it dark makes sure that algae or other light-feeding organisms do not bloom in your water and keeping it covered keeps the bugs out (especially mosquitoes, who love standing water.) Stored rain water should not be used for drinking, unless it has been treated to get rid of any bacteria.

cheaply. * Wash your car with a bucket and sponge only. * Use a hosepipe with a self-closing nozzle to wash your car. * Water can be saved in the bathroom by placing a brick in your toilet’s cistern tank. * Bathe young children together. * Cut back on washing your towels and linen.

* Match the size of your laundry load with the water volume. * Keep a bottle of tap water in the fridge to avoid running the tap until the water is cold. * Use a plugged sink to wash dishes or vegetables and fruit instead of a running tap.

How to check for hidden water leaks * Take a reading on your water meter at a time when no water is being used. Check again after two hours. If it does not read the same, there is a leak. * Invest in a leak-detection system that has an inbuilt control valve, which will automatically shut off the water supply if a leak or a burst pipe is detected. * Check your toilet for leaks by adding some food colouring to the tank and if the toilet is leaking, the toilet bowl will have changed colour within 30 minutes. Also check the handle; if it remains in a downward position, it means that water is constantly running.

NOTIFICATION NOTIFICATION OF A PUBLIC PARTICIPATION PROCESS AS PART OF AN ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT FOR THE PROPOSED TEMPORARY ACCOMMODATION FACILITY AT VENETIA MINE AND THE AVAILABILITY OF THE DRAFT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT FOR PUBLIC REVIEW AND ASSOCIATED PUBLIC MEETING, LIMPOPO PROVINCE. DEPARTMENT OF MINERAL RESOURCES REF. LPNEMA00058MR Notice is hereby given in terms of the National Environmental Management Act, Act 107 of 1998 as amended (NEMA) to carry out an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in terms of the EIA Regulations (2014) as published in the Government Notice R. 982. Location and Description of the proposed activity: De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited’s (DBCM) has an existing Mining Right for Venetia Mine. The mine is located on various farms, namely the farms Venetia 103MS, Krone 104MS, Rugen 105MS and Drumsheugh 99MS approximately 80km west of Musina and 40km north-east of Alldays in the Limpopo Province. Mining operations consist of both open pit and underground operations. The underground mine, which will replace the open pit mine, is expected to commence operation by 2023 and will extend the life of Venetia Mine. The construction of the underground mine necessitates the need for additional labour and therefore temporary accommodation units is required at Venetia Mine. Without these temporary accommodation units the transition from open pit to underground mining will not be possible. The proposed temporary accommodation units is planned to house approximately 800 to 1000 people at peak for a short period of six (6) years. The temporary accommodation facility will be comprised of both brick and mortar and prefabricated structures. The prefabricated units will be temporary in nature allowing for the removal of these structures after 6 years which may have the potential to be used as Corporate Social Investment projects. The brick and mortar structures allow Venetia Mine the opportunity to optimise the mines current processes by utilising these buildings outside of the high security area. Venetia Mine is conducting an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)/Environmental Management Plan (EMP) in terms of the National Environmental Management Act (Act No. 107 of 1998)(NEMA) EIA Regulations of 2014 and a Water Use Licence Application in terms of water uses as listed in terms of Section 21 of the National Water Act (Act No. 36 of 1998).

News with an independent soul

‘Wat is die Christelike evangelie?

D

Regs: Me.
