‘n Konsep-petisie getiteld “Ban the Bang” is reeds opgestel en word regs tegnies versorg.

rom a veterinarian’s point of view, the amount of trauma caused by fireworks cannot accurately be described in words. Not just physical trauma, but severe emotional and psychological damage too. (And not just to the animal … witnesses to all this cruelty suffer excruciating emotional pain too!) I have seen horrific cases of dogs being strung up by extremities because they tried to “escape” from the noise. They get caught in or hung up on fences, gate posts or palisades. If they are rescued in time, severe damage is done to soft tissue and ligaments – which have to be repaired surgically. I have had cases of animals breaking bones in their attempt to free themselves from these obstacles / traps! Dogs or cats or wild animals which end up hanging head down from gates / palisades, suffer a horrific death due to blood pooling into the brain and slowing down brain function due to brain swelling. Death in the end would be as result of a blood clot or to brain function shutting down.

Doubts about the truth in girl’s story of abduction and rape By Isabel Venter

An incident where a 15-year-old girl was allegedly held hostage in a house in Louis Trichardt and raped caused widespread reaction during December and some residents even feared for their own safety while the “rapist” was still at large. In the last edition of 2016 of the Zoutpansberger/Limpopo Mirror it was reported that the Makhado Police had launched a manhunt for a man who had allegedly kidnapped the girl and then raped her over a period of four days. The story threw the community in disarray, with people fearing that there is a sadistic monster that could harm their children. However, a strong possibility exists that the girl’s whole ordeal might have been a fabricated story. The police have confirmed that their investigations have revealed several major inconsistencies in the girl’s first testimony regarding what had happened the day she was allegedly abducted. The initial report stated that the girl was discovered on 19 December last year while trying to escape the house where she was being held captive in Kleynhans Street.

(This street has always been a preferred route to school for many children attending the nearby Louis Trichardt Primary School – resulting in escalating levels of panic in the community). The first contradiction the police found in the girl’s story was that she is not a minor but is in fact 19 years old. While investigating her statement, the police also discovered witnesses who had seen the girl in the company of a man on the day of her alleged abduction. This and other information the police gathered raised doubts as to whether they were dealing with a legitimate case of rape. At the time of her rescue the girl told onlookers that her captor had forced her to drink something that had made her sleepy and weak when she woke up. On the fourth day she allegedly did not receive the suspected drug and then managed to escape from the house. When she escaped from the house, she told passersby that she had been walking along the street when an unknown man had called her over. When she tried to walk away, she was grabbed, dragged towards the unoccupied house and had a rag stuffed in her mouth when she called out for help. When she regained consciousness, she was tied up, with the rag still in her mouth

and her clothes gone. One of the people who assisted her when she “escaped” recalled – in an interview with the newspaper – that the girl had still been tied up, completely naked and bleeding profusely at that time. Despite the contradictions in her story, the police are still viewing the incident in a serious light and will continue with their investigations. If the police can find prove that the girl had not been raped but had been involved in a consensual sexual act, it could lead to her case not standing for trial in court. “If the girl made false claims, not only would she have wasted valuable police and State resources, but also caused unnecessary panic in the community,” said the police. Apart from all this, reporting fake incidents of rape not only places a burden on already-stretched-thin police resources, but also causes a delay in the investigation of actual rape cases. “The public must realize that if you lie about one aspect of your case, the chances are good that your case will never hold up in court,” the police further warned. On Tuesday the police confirmed that they are still searching for the man in whose company the girl was seen when she claimed she was kidnapped.

The mayor of the Makhado Municipality, Cllr Shonisani Sinyosi, donated Christmas gifts in the form of clothes to newborn babies at both the Elim and Siloam Hospital on Christmas Day. She said that people were not supposed to forget those who were in pain during the festive season. She was very excited and added that babies were very special “and they are close to my heart.” She added that when babies were born she became happy because the population of Makhado Municipality increased. Four babies were born at Siloam while three were born at Elim. In our photograph, the mayor is holding a baby with Cllr Tebogo Mamorobela looking on. Photo supplied.

110mm reën gemeet is. By Bandelierkop is 65mm die afgelope twee weke gemeet.

The house in Kleynhans Street where the girl alleged she was held hostage and raped. The police found a number of inconsistencies in the story and it also does not tie in with what other witnesses described.

A real gentleman has passed away

I

t was with a heavy heart that family and friends had to bid farewell to Willie van Zyl. He suffered both from the Alzheimers and Parkinsons diseases, and sadly lost the battle when he passed away on Friday, 6 September in the age of 70. His family will remember him for the real gentleman that he was; and always full of witty remarks about his conditions. Willie and his wife Margaret retired in Louis Trichardt during January 2011, enjoying the beautiful surroundings. He was an avid motor racing enthusiast, and even took part in racing in his younger days. He had a passion for Ferrari. Willie leaves behind his wife, his son Brendon and four grandchildren. The family expressed their heartfelt gratitude towards the local community, their extended circle of friends and family for all their love and support given during their time of grief. They also had a special word of thanks for Dr Casper Venter and all the doctors and staff of the Zoutpansberg Private Hospital for the great care they had given Will in his last days. A memorial service will be held for Willie on Monday, 16 January at the Emmanuel Church in Louis Trichardt at 11:00.

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER All are

invited to come and pray together on Sunday, 26 February, during the Up4sa National Day of Prayer. In Louis Trichardt, people will be able to pray together from 17:00. This is a national prayer initiative during which believers from across the nation will gather at venues on the same day and time to pray. (Louis Trichardt’s venue will be announced in the coming weeks). Some of the areas that will be covered in prayer will include a prophetic act of humility, dependency, unity and honour to the Lord Jesus Christ as the only answer and hope for South Africa. It will be an hour-long event, during which every person will be asked to kneel (if in any way possible) to sing The Lord’s Prayer. Attendees are welcome to bring their own blanket or chairs if needed. For more information, phone Past Leonie Meyfarth at 084 219 4406.

Gal.5:23.

POSTAL ADDRESS / POSADRES PO Box / Posbus 1680, Louis Trichardt, 0920

- 079 5168303

Monkeys may look cute, but they’re no house pets Vervet monkeys may look very cute, but these wild animals are definitely not pets. The end result, should someone try and capture them, is mostly the

death of the animal. Allan McMurtrie, an official at the Wildlife Trade and Regulation department in the Vhembe District, warned members of the public not to try and catch baby vervet monkeys. “Catching it,

putting a nappy on it and giving it a banana is not going to help in any way,” he says. According to Allan, they had to deal with an incident in town over the December holidays where a vervet monkey had

been captured. “The young monkey was found on its own in the bush and, without further thought, caught and taken home to be kept as a pet,” he says. Allan explains that most people do not understand how difficult it is to raise such an animal. They don’t realise what its social and dietary needs are and what it requires as it grows up. “This monkey, like all primates, needs continual interaction and learns daily from the troop. Not only is it expensive to feed, but virtually impossible to rehabilitate. Humans tend to play on their emotions without thinking of the animal and its wellbeing,” he says. Allan advised residents, when they come across a youngster on its own in the bush, to rather move away and allow the mother or other siblings to reunite. The youngster has a better chance of survival in its own environment. “Currently rehabilitation facilities for both vervet monkeys (chlorocebus aethiops) and Chakma baboons (Papio hamadryas ursinus) are full and they cannot take in anymore,” says Allan. The unfortunate end for the vervet monkey was euthanasia. “Together with the SPCA we had to make the difficult decision on the life of a helpless young vervet monkey,” says Allan. Vervet monkeys may look like cute pets, but capturing one is almost sure to result in the death of the animal.

The top matric results for 2016 in Limpopo came, much to the surprise of everyone, from the Vhuronga 1 school circuit that falls within the Vuwani area in the Vhembe district. This area had to suffer several incidents of unrest during the past years where schools were burnt down and the education process interrupted. This circuit scored a 81.2% pass rate, with 757 candidates who wrote and 615 who passed. The MEC for Education, Ishmael Kgetjepe, said last Thursday during the official announcement of the provincial results that the circuit had performed exceptionally well, despite its schools having lost valuable teaching and learning time because of the unrest. He further said the Vhuronga 2 and Hlanganani North circuits, whose schools were also affected by the Vuwani unrests, had performed above the national norm of 60%. Asked about the secret behind the good results, the circuit manager of Vhuronga 1, Mr David Mafune, said that it was through the dedication of the circuit managers, teachers, learners and parents that they scooped up the award for the best Limpopo circuit. “The involvement of all stakeholders, which included parents, SGB members and traditional leaders, also contributed to the good performance,” he said. He said they worked as a family, with a lot of attention given to pupils, as well as advice on their personal lives. “We are parents here at the circuit. Some of our pupils sometimes get lost and we call them to order. We are very proud to say that some of those we had helped managed to get many distinctions and made the circuit very proud,” said Mafune. He encouraged the youth to take education seriously, so that they can face the challenges of the future with ease. He encouraged the parents to cooperate with the Department of Education and other stakeholders for the benefit of education in the country. He said it was important to set up realistic goals that could be achieved within a given period in life. “Failure does not necessarily mean that one has to stop pursuing your dreams.” Rivoni School for the Blind is the best school in the province and their learner, Zacharia Nyathi, is one of the candidates invited by the Minister of Education, Angie Motshega, to attend the National Awards ceremony held in Midrand. “The school produced a 100% pass rate,” said Kgetjepe.

Dié foto is verlede jaar geneem toe drie seuns op ‘n plaas naby Maelula betrap is terwyl hulle ‘n avokadoboord stroop.

Inbrekers sorg vir baie skade by plaaslike skool

Bekende sakeman sleg beseer in fietsry ongeluk Deur Isabel Venter

Foto verskaf.
