By Mashudu Netsianda

Police intercept 80kg of cocaine destined for SA The SAPS at the Beit Bridge border post have intercepted 80 kilograms of cocaine to the value of about R23 million, which was smuggled from Zimbabwe into the country. A haulage truck carrying the drug was cleared by Zimbabwean immigration and customs – only to be intercepted on the South Africa side. South African Revenue Services (SARS) spokesperson Marika Muller said it was the biggest ever shipment of cocaine they had intercepted

being smuggled into the country. “We can confirm that we seized cocaine worth about R23 million, concealed in a truck attempting to enter South Africa from Zimbabwe,” she said in a statement. “The truck had started its trip in Malawi. The truck had been identified for closer searches, and had been moved out of the processing queue to be checked.” She said inside the truck’s cabin the customs team found bags containing wrapped A4sized parcels which the

driver claimed contained his clothes. “Initial inspection indicated the parcels contained a soft white substance. After a full physical search, the team found 100 A4 parcels, weighing 800kgs in total, each containing smaller packages of a white powder,” Muller said. Muller said the powder was confirmed as cocaine by chemical testing. “This is the single biggest seizure of cocaine ever at Beit Bridge. The truck driver was arrested and the truck was seized.”

Please drive safely this festive season, says Limpopo premier Limpopo Premier Stanley Matha batha has urged the public to be safe on the roads during this festive season. “As provincial government, we wish all those who will be travelling to different destinations, and those who will be coming to Limpopo, a safe journey,” he said. He warns, however, that safety on the roads lies with all road users. “All our roads have been upgraded to cope with volumes of traffic, but safety still remains with individuals. Our police and traffic officials will go all out to ensure that all people are safe, either

on the roads or wherever they will be,” he added. “I wish to welcome millions of Christian pilgrims to the Zion City of Moria and other churches for a safe, prayerful Christmas. Your prayers for the nation are most wel come,” said Mathabatha. Mathabatha said while people were enjoying the festive season, they should remember that next year is the year of elections. “Let us utilize this Christmas and New Year as a time of reflection. We will celebrate 20 years of democracy with much joy and hope. Let us exercise our freedom and democracy responsibly,” he said.

Mnr.

CHRISTMAS WELL WISHES FROM THE MAYOR OF MAKHADO CLLR FARISANI DAVID MUTAVHATSINDI It is yet that time of the year again when families and friends spend their time together. All motorists who will be traveling to their holiday destinations must drive safely; take breakes as advised by National Department of Roads and Transport and obey all traffic rules, so that they can arrive alive. Those who drink alcohol must drink responsibly and not drive while under the influence of alcohol. Let all make sure that children are safe during the festive seasons. It is our responsibility as parents to watch our children very closely; respect and protect them. Let us all enjoy the festive season and prepare ourselves to vote next year during the national elections. We pay tribute to our fallen hero, the former President of South Africa, Mr Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela who recently passed on. Mandela dedicated his life time to struggle of the African people. As we celebrate Christmas, we must always remember the sacrifices that Mandela did for the betterment of the people. May his soul rest in peace. We also advise parents to spend their hard earned money responsibly during this period; in order to be able to support their children financially when school re-opens next year. As the Mayor of Makhado Municipality, I wish all the residents of Makhado a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. May the Almighty God bless you. Mayor Councillor David Mutavhatsindi

LiN Nuus / Noordelike Nuus

Hoe werk etol-dagpas?

UNIQUE FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITY

Band helps to spread Christmas cheer The sound of Christmas carols coming from brass instru ments touches many ears and hearts in town. Members of the Salvation Army walk around from 1 to 23 December, playing the songs to all who opt to listen. “We want to remind the people about the birth of Jesus Christ,” says their leader, Thulani Dlamini, who is a student at the Durban University of Technology (Pie termaritzburg campus) coming back home to Makhado (Louis Trichardt) for the holidays. The majority of the group members are busy with tertiary studies elsewhere and are now home to take their place in the Salvation Army.

international charity organiza tion. The Army was founded in 1865 in London by Rev William Booth and his spouse and re structured in 1878 to display a kind of military structure which is retained till today, with the local group appearing in neat clothing. The Booths wanted to bring salvation to the poor, homeless and hungry by meeting their physical as well as spiritual needs. The local band also has their Salvation Army collection box with them. They collect money to buy instruments and for other needs. The band finds that the reaction of the residents is very good and they want to express their appreciation to the community.

“The people are very kind and they actually pray for us,” says Khetho Ramalata and adds that playing carols in the streets means a lot to him personally. “It boosts my spiritual life. 13 December 2013 Christmas Messages

“Merry Christmas to all”

Foto verskaf.

The municipal manager of the Makhado Municipality, Mr Isaac Mutshinyali, took the op portunity this week to convey his end-of-year and Christmas message and wishes to residents of the Soutpansberg region. “I wish to take this opportunity to express gratitude to the peo ple of Makhado Municipality, particularly Mayor Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, for having afford ed me the opportunity to become your municipal manager,” said Mutshinyali. Mutshinyali, better known as Sakkie among residents, also took a moment to reflect on the passing of South Africa’s first black president, Mr Nelson

Rolihlahla Mandela, for emanci pating the country and making it conceivable that a black person be given an opportunity to head the government administratively. “May his soul rest in peace. It is because of this opportunity that black people have proven beyond reservation that they can govern and govern better,” said Mutshinyali. As part of his Christmas mes sage, Mutshinyali expressed his gratitude towards his colleagues within the municipal manage ment and broader staff for their dedicated team efforts during the year. “Working together, we have done better.” Due to their hard work, said Mutshinyali, the

Makhado Municipality was able to implement all their action plans towards becoming a viable financial institution effectively. “We have both [politicians and administrators] made it possible to move away from the recurring 13 years of disclaimers to the present Qualification Opinion in 2012/13. However, it is impera tive for us to remember that we have not yet arrived; we should be looking forward for a clean audit, and this is possible, provid ed we endure working together. “Finally, I take this opportuni ty to wish all people of Makhado Municipal area a safe, merry Christmas and a happy New Year. May God bless you.”

Daar is altyd volgende jaar.

By Nic Hoffmann

He was not a god, but a remarkable man It does not matter wheth er you loved him or loathed him Nelson Mandela had an indelible, ineffable and ineluc table influence on this country and its people. Regardless of whether you find the media circus surrounding his death irritating or laudable, one can never negate that he was a most remarkable man. Some choose to regard him as a terrorist who caused the deaths of a number of people (directly and/or indirectly) and therefore worthy of condemnation. Oth ers choose only to remember the good he embodied love, forgiveness, peace, goodwill, tolerance, nonracialism, etc. What I choose to remember about him is that he had the guts and the courage of his conviction

to stand up against a morally indefensible political system. He not only took on the powers that were, but he put his money where his mouth was. As if that were not enough, he endured all the hardships of incarceration, humiliation and ill health that accompanied this time of shame in our country’s history AND STILL he came out stronger on the other side. Not only that, he CHOSE not to become bitter and vengeful and showed us that it is indeed possible to follow Christ’s example of forgiving those who trespass against us. If some in the world choose to call him a Messiah or a modernday Jesus, they are wrong, but only in the fact that he was not a divine being without sin he was just a man. A man who repeatedly warned peo

ple not to turn his image into an idol, which is exactly what some are doing for their own particular agenda or some obscure political or financial gain. Sadly, some of those closest to him seem to belong to the latter contingent. Fact is, Madiba was a man with many faults and shortcomings, just like all of us. Those who knew him intimately can attest to that. I am, unfortunately, not one of those. Regardless, I know that many things, good and bad, would not have happened in and for this country if it were not for him. I therefore choose to remember him with kindness and gratitude, even while I refuse to revere him as anything other than a mere mortal who will have no influence on my salvation. Soli Deo Gloria.

“Nelson Mandela’s message of peace in a time of conflict changed South Africa and inspired the world. His life stands as a resolute symbol of hope in the face of oppression, and an unparalleled example of the power of reconciliation to heal a nation. As De Beers mourns the passing of Mandela, we are heartened to know that his message of hope endures. He is a singular figure in human history and, while we will miss him, we know that his spirit lives on and serves as a source of inspiration and strength to us all. - Philippe Mellier (CEO of the De Beers Group) 1918 – Forever. – Natalie Archer (Makhado / Louis Trichardt) R.I.P Tata. Hamba Kahle “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” Nelson Mandela - Irene Smith-Vos

“If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner.” “Thanks for everything you did for our country.” – Joanetha Lambert (42), Makhado Rus in vrede Madiba!!!! - Erika Burger Ackerman It’s with deep sadness to learn that our nation’s hero, Mr Nelson Mandela, has passed away. Even now I am still mourning about him, may his soul rest in peace. – Maxson Nekhavahaba (Elim) Nelson Mandela, I’m very proud of you. You sacrificed your life for us to have freedom. Rest in peace. – Reshamise Ligaraba Rendani Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela has taught us a lot as a nation. We will be forever thankful. – Mohammed Rasool Jnr (Makhado / Louis Trichardt) You changed South Africa. We will be forever thankful. – Rosanne Smal (Makhado / Louis Trichardt) “He was the man of reconciliation, laughter, humility and love. He gave us a precious democracy. We are sympathising with his family during this difficult time.” - Given Khoza from Tshikota “Our leader, our icon, Nelson Madiba Rolihlahla Mandela, the loss of Mandela’s Family is the loss of the whole continent, we saw what you did to South Africa and the countries around us, we hoping we going to follow your footsteps.” – Singo Rendani Pearl from Shiozwi (Louis Trichardt)

“Totsiens, Tata Madiba, jy was ‘n goeie mens. - Elsie Brandt

For Madiba: We are really sorry for what happened with Mandela family, and send our condolences. – S O Mushwana (Makhado Fire Station) Madiba - He was Strong enough 2 be Gentle, Brave enough 2 Stand Alone and Wise enough 2 let the world catch up with what he knew all along....A voice that will Resonate through eternity. – SP Miller (Makhado/Louis Trichardt)

Nelson Rol

Our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences are with the Mandela family and friends at this time. – Bobby Rasool (Makhado / Louis Trichardt)

I urge all South Africans to live the legacy which Madiba has left. Long live Madiba, Long Live. - Sgt Thomas Mulaudzi (Makhado / Louis Trichardt)

The Soutpansberg has a unique bond with the late Mr Nelson Mandela through the friendship with numerous residents. One such person is local businessman, Mr Solly Noor who supported him during the struggle years. In this historic photo, taken in 1999, Solly (second from left) poses with Madiba in his prison cell on Robben Island. From left to right are actor/comedian, Bill Cosby, Solly Noor, Mr Nelson Mandela, Zohra Noor and Farzana Noor.

Nelson Mandela Tribute Page “No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

“Apartheid- wrong in South Africa, wrong in Palestine...” A phrase said by Nelson Mandela showing his passion for peace and equality not just in his land but all around the world. - Azra Asvat (Makhado / Louis Trichardt) Madiba-inspiration, gave us hope, an example to all on how to forgive without holding a grudge, You made the world notice us. May you rest in peace, you deserve it. – Antionette Geerdts (Heaven Sent Pre-School)

“He was our Friend, Father and Freedom Fighter.” – Feeyaza Ismail (38), Makhado “Rest in peace, Mandela. You were born for a purpose. The country has seen and acknowledged your contribution. You will be remembered.” - Victor Madobe (Tshikota) “We pay tribute to our fallen hero, the former President of South Africa, Mr Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. He dedicated his life to the struggle of the African people. May his soul rest in peace. - Makhado Mayor Cllr David Mutavhatsindi “We are deeply saddened by the passing on of our former president. The world has indeed noticed your being a sacrificial lamb and now South Africa is enjoying the hope and faith you had.” - Dr Phumudzo Machaka (Makhado) A sad goodbye to the Father of our Nation! He served his country with love and gave his life for the freedom which we all live in today. He turned the world’s eye to a small southern African country and helped spread the message of forgiveness across the face of the earth. We salute you Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. It all seemed impossible until it was done! - Dane Rooi Gordon

President Nelson Mandela het in 1999 amptelik besoek afgelê by LMB Louis Trichardt.

“I wish the world could remember him forever and that his peaceful influence would linger on for eternity. He stood up for humans and his life should be celebrated as such. Farewell Madiba.” - Hangwe Netshifhefhe “When we lose such a special person like Tata Mandela in our life, time seems to stop. However, it is important that we start to live again with a smile on our faces, so that we can make his soul happy, as he is still looking at us even if we can’t. No words can adequately describe this enormous loss to our nation and to the world. We give thanks for his life, his leadership, his devotion to humanity and humanitarian causes. – Musina major, Carol Phiri “There will be no one like you Tata Madiba, we are who we are because of you, robala ka kgotso Tata, you will forever be remembered.” – T Mulaudzi (Makhado Fire Station) “We will miss you, Madiba. Shaida Rasool (Makhado / Louis Trichardt) “You will always be remembered. We lost a great leader as well as the father of the nation. An inspiration to all who made our country one to be proud of. He showed us that everything is possible if you just believe. Rest in peace, Rolihlahla Mandela, the father of our nation.” - King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana

The Executive Mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, urged communities in the Vhembe district to pay tribute to former President Nelson Mandela. “We are in deep mourning following the untimely passing away of our icon, Tata Nelson Mandela. We want communities in our district to always emulate what Mandela inspired us to do. Hamba kahle!,” said Matibe. In the photo Dean Alunamutwe Rannditsheni, Executive Mayor, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe and Dr Tshifhiwa Muligwe join hands during the signing of a Condolence Book for Vhembe District in support of the late former President Nelson Mandela. (Photo by Silas Nduvheni). “Mandela gave us freedom and that is how I will always remember him” - Mr Basil Mabasa from Elim “He’s that GREAT man who will always be alive among us. His deeds speak louder even today.” “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” — Nelson Mandela. Mr Mandela called us to action - people everywhere - to take responsibility for hanging the world into a better place, one small step at a time, just as he did. Rus in vrede Madiba. - Directors and personnel, Zoutpansberg Private Hospital

of the premises or who said that they did not know the contact details. “At the farms, we found many farms owned by companies and the people were not there,” Nkuna said. For property owners who are concerned about how their property will be valued on the new val uation roll, Nkuna allayed some fears and said that the properties would be valued fairly and according to market value. The valuation roll process will be completed by June next year. “Property values are affected by the economy. There’s not a lot of move ment in the property market except on townhouses and a few residential properties,” Nkuna said. The chairperson of the SRPA, Ms Inga Gilfil lan said that the Ratepayers would like to know the qualifications of the valuers and how they eventually arrive at the amount that they value the property for. The municipality was asked if they could vouch for the qualifications of the individual valuers. “Yes, the tender process and security checks were done and verified,” said Bobodi. *Gilfillan urged residents to give the valuers access into their homes, but only when they have assured themselves of the person’s identification. She also requested that residents accompany the valuer through the house.

Cheerful participators in the nativity scene all gathered around “Joseph”, “Mary” and “baby Jesus”. Everyone, from the wise men to the shepherds to the little sheep, looks very happy to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. All are from Small Talk Christian Centre for Early Learning.

During the current valuation process in the Makhado municipal area there were occurrenc es of valuers taking photos inside houses, which many residents felt was a security risk. This week one of the owners of Risuna Prop erties and Valuers, Mr Kulani Nkuna, apologized for the taking of photos inside houses. “They have stopped with that practice. That was a mistake. Photos of the property should be taken from the street,” Nkuna said. The Makhado Municipality says that the current valuation of properties will be completed by the end of January next year. The valuation is with a view to the compilation of a new valuation roll and the levying of property rates. The municipal spokesperson, Mr Louis Bobodi, was asked whether it is a standard practice to use cameras inside houses and the complaint about the security risk was mentioned. “The size of the house is required with its image. Public notices were put in the media and in all statements that a qualified valuer will be doing a valuation roll in terms of the MPR Act,” was Bobodi’s reply. He did not, however, properly clarify the issue of photos taken inside houses. The Soutpansberg Ratepayers Association (SRPA) submitted a written complaint on the issue on 25 October and they have not received an answer from the municipality to date. This practice of the taking of photos inside houses has fortunately stopped, possibly in the light of the Zoutpansberger of 15 November reporting on the issue. Unfortunately, Risuna’s valuers ex perienced resistance from some residents. “Some residents were very uncooperative. Some said that the newspaper reported that our valuers should not be allowed access. Some even set their dogs on us. They seemed to confuse us with municipal officials and would talk about the potholes and lack of water,” Nkuna said and added that about 50% of the residents were cooperative. (*Find below an extract from the article which urged residents to give access to valuers on certain conditions). In the business arena, Risuna’s valuers found that most business premises were occupied by tenants who either gave the contact number of the owner

Musina Municipal News

Own service centre for Campbell underway The days of travelling long distances to access municipal and government services will soon be a thing of the past for Ward 6 residents of Musina Municipality. This comes after their wish for the construction of the Thusong Service Centre in Nancefield Ext 7 (commonly known as Campbell) was finally granted. The project started last month and construction is now at an advanced stage. The Musina Munici pality, through the Municipal Infrastrure Grant, has committed R2,2 million towards the implementa tion of the much-awaited project. The Thusong Service Centre programme of the government was initiated in 1999 as one of the primary vehicles for the implementation of development communication and information and to integrate government services into primarily By Mashudu Netsianda

indigent communities. This was done to address historical, social and economic factors, with limited access to information, services and participation by citizens, as they had to travel long distances to access these services. Measures to help curb border congestion Zimbabwe and South Africa have decided to implement a range of measures to curb congestion and weed out crim inal activity at the Beit Bridge border post during the coming festive season. The border is usually a hive of activity during the festive holiday as it will be characterized by long winding queues of traffic as mostly Zimbabweans would be travelling to their country to spend Christmas at home. The measures include setting up clearance centres away from the border. South African Home Affairs Minister Naledi Pandor told the Zoutpansberger that congestion at the border is of concern to both countries. “Apart from increasing staff deployment to ensure quick processing of documents, we will create centres away from the border post for multi-border transport,” she said. She recently attended the 8th session of the Zimbabwe/South Africa Joint Permanent Commis sion on Defence and Security in Bulawayo. “After clearance, the travellers will then be escorted to pass through the border.

Dadelik is Jakobus helder wakker. “Dis Madiba ... Hy is dood!”

Kyk in watter toestand is jou sussie. Kom, Daisy, drink – dit sal jou beter laat voel.” “Hoekom is jy so vreeslik ontsteld?” “Jy onthou mos toe Mamma dood is, Ousus,” begin Daisy. “My eerste vraag aan jou was, wie gaan nou vir ons bid? Nou hierdie is dieselfde.

“Baie, baie dankie my liewe swaer. Ek waardeer dit vreeslik. Jy ken my so goed, jy het geweet dat ek vandag stampmielies nodig het.” Sy tel haar wynglas op. “God seën Afrika,” sê sy. “En God seën elkeen in hierdie wonderlike familie!”

Die Weg, die Waarheid en die Lewe Matt. 26:57-68 - Die stil Lam

T

The winds of uncertainty are still hovering over Tshikota, causing residents to live in fear and hesitant to leave their homes unattended while they go to their work places. Two weeks ago, community members went berserk and burnt down a hostel, set a suspect’s lover’s RDP house on fire and went out looking for a man who was thought to have been the leader of a group which terrorised the community. On 27 November, the youths, even minors who could have been no more than eight years old, searched for the suspect in the bushes at the back of the Tshikota cemetery. They were armed with iron rods, sticks, stones and wires. The search proceeded to the dense bushes in the vicinity of Palm Motors, before the angry youths decided to go look for the suspect’s lover at Dzith angani. They said that they wanted to discipline her for harbouring a criminal in her RDP house, which had also been set on fire some two days before. However, the youths returned while still carrying weapons at around 12:43. “We will get him; (he) thinks that he can get away,” some youths told a police officer who requested them to stop moving around the location with weapons in their hands. They told the police officer to leave them alone. At around 16:00, news of the main suspect’s ar rest spread through the town like wildfire. Residents of Tshikota rushed to the LTT Memorial Hospital in the hope of searching for the suspect in all the wards, so that they could “beat him to death”. LTT Memorial Hospital’s spokesperson, Mr

Kutelani Sigidi, confirmed that a patient had been admitted for treatment and later discharged. “He was brought by SAPS officials,” Sigidi said. “It’s not true that community members searched for the patient in the wards of the hospital.” The police’s provincial spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto, confirmed that a suspect, Given Mpofu (24), had been arrested, along with his two co-accused, Ndulani Menukula (23) and Courage Shoko (23). The three men were part of the group of five men who were nabbed while allegedly attempting to rob two houses at Gogobole village on 27 November. Meanwhile, Cllr Brian du Plooy (Ward 21) said that he and his ward committee were involved in regular meetings to address the problem and grievances of the residents regarding illegal im migrants. He indicated that the situation became tumultuous on 1 December, when there were “xen ophobic attacks” from both sides – Zimbabwean and South African. “The police acted appropriately and helped disperse the crowds of fighting parties,” said Du Plooy. “I also learned that the mayor visited the place (Tshikota) but he couldn’t speak with residents, because he is said to have noticed that they were drunk.” However, Du Plooy pointed out that negotiations continued between the leadership of South African residents in Tshikota and the immigrants to reach a resolution. “The community needs the Zimbabwe ans to compile a list of legal and illegal immigrants in Tshikota,” he said. “Meanwhile, I have also learned that the municipality has instructed their attorneys to file a court interdict to remove ille gal immigrants who are currently occupying the hostel.” He also indicated that the community should have had a meeting with the DA, COPE, top po lice officers and repre sentatives of immigrants on Saturday. “But the people didn’t turn up,” he said. This is how the interior of the RDP house, alleged to belong to the suspect’s partner, looked like.
