3D PRINTED FACADE + SECTIONAL MODEL

Using Rhinoceros and Grasshopper, this parametric tower was inspired by the shape of a double helix. I wanted to demonstrate curvature through square shapes that are typically used for purely linear applications. The tower came to life through laser cut wood floors and tabs as well as plexi tubes that provide structure for the design. The facade was designed purely in grasshopper using the ‘voronoi’ command and was laser cut onto black card. The facade was further explored by creating a sectional model that was then 3D printed.

OPACITY PAVILION

The goal was to produce a structure on the given site that provided a place to sleep and read as well as incorporating a fireplace. Given these requirements, I designed a pavilion that cantilevers over the lake that was almost completely enclosed in glass. By stripping any sense of privacy, individuals are forced to adapt to the publicity of their life. The fireplace is built into the floors and doubles as a support and the fire exhaust through a vacuum system.

INFINITY RAMP This design required circulation and human occupation by creating spaces with horizontal elements like floors and ramps/stairs. Continuing with the origami inspired design from the previous assignment for this class, I made ramps by twisting concentric circle origami and stacking one on another, taking precedents from Erik Demaine’s work.

Origami is the art of folding and repetition - an idea that is further explored within this design that is based on the form of diamond origami shapes. The Orion Student Center is intended to convey an outdoor space that allows plenty of natural light through a unique form that still allows for human occupation. This simple diamond module is repeated throughout the design and also acts as a connecting pathway between each opposing ramp.

NOTE THE CLEAR BOUNDARIES BETWEEN THE RESIDENTIAL AND INDUSTRIAL ZONES, WHERE THE TTC TRAVELS, AND THE LEVELS OF INCOME.

DISCONNECTED NEIGHBOURHOOD

Receiving the site on the first day of class, I produced maps through observations of the neighbourhood on Sheppard Avenue West and Weston Road in North Toronto. These maps are intended to explain the income polarization that has heavily taken over Toronto. The neighbourhood itself was a great example of such issue. Million dollar streets reside next to streets less than half their worth with homes that are generally placed along/near lines of transportation, although hardly even being utilized by them. The relationship between the varying house prices and the areas of income are important when understanding the large gap between the rich and the poor - a disconnected neighbourhood.

NOTE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN HOMES, THE PROXIMITY BETWEEN THEM, AND WHERE THE TTC LINES UP ALTHOUGH MOST HOMES OWN CARS.

Art has always been one of the most important talents in my life. These paintings were all completed in the summer of 2016 and helped me develop my skills as an artist who usually drew pencil on paper. By pushing myself out of my comfort zone, I experimented with various colours and techniques. The two paintings on the right are of musical artists and I felt that they were meant to be represented through colours, to express how music makes me feel emotionally. All three paintings are acrylic on white canvas. ZAYN MALIK

SCREEN SHOTS FROM FILM

A video blog of my trip to Spain this past winter. Videography and editing is a strong passion of mine that I continue to pursue whenever I get a chance. This video challenged my editing abilities, but allowed me to produce a film that I believe best represents my experience in Spain. Check the video out by clicking the thumbnail!
