Dear Professor, We are pleased to present the Fall 2020 Academic Catalog featuring Zondervan Academic and Zondervan Reflective releases from August 2020 through April 2021. As always, our goal is to: • publish across the broad spectrum of biblical, theological, and ministry related disciplines; • publish works that stay abreast of current scholarship, written by the emerging generation of scholars as well as seasoned, proven scholars; and • publish works that model irenic discussion, represent a variety of viewpoints, and yet stay within the boundaries of our commitments to the historic doctrines of orthodox Christianity and biblical authority. Our team always aims to stay at the cutting-edge of publishing, seeking new ways to deliver first-rate scholarship to an emerging generation heavily influenced by new technologies. The appearance and tragic global spread of COVID-19 has disrupted higher education and underscored the importance of technology. Because we emphasize innovation, we were able to help professors adapt quickly to the challenges presented by the pandemic, providing free access to digital textbooks during the spring 2020 semester through our Zondervan Online Courses platform, and, beginning in May, with the launch of our groundbreaking Enhanced Editions textbooks. Two years in development, our Enhanced Editions feature core Zondervan Academic textbooks in a fully digital and customizable interface that empowers professors with unprecedented tools to engage students in the classroom and online. Titles include some of our most time-tested textbooks as well as new releases: • • • • • • •

Four Portraits, One Jesus, Second Edition, by Mark L. Strauss How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth, by Gordon D. Fee The Message of the Prophets, by J. Daniel Hays Systematic Theology, by Wayne Grudem Basics of Biblical Greek Grammar, Fourth Edition, by William D. Mounce The New Testament in Its World, by N. T. Wright and Michael F. Bird The Color of Compromise, by Jemar Tisby

More than twenty titles are now available with more than forty available by year’s end. You can learn more about Enhanced Editions on pages 32–35. Throughout the summer, our attention has been drawn to the problems caused by social injustice in our nation and the efforts by many, including Christians, to bring about constructive social reform. We continue to publish books that address pressing questions about contemporary culture from diverse voices speaking from within the historical evangelical tradition. Recent efforts in this direction include the New York Times bestselling debut from Jemar Tisby, The Color of Compromise, and N. T. Wright’s timely God and the Pandemic. Jemar Tisby’s second book, How to Fight Racism, is due out in January. Despite the challenges presented to us in 2020, Zondervan Academic continues to publish new and revised editions of textbooks for the biblical languages, biblical studies, theology, church history, and ministry reflecting our ongoing commitment to providing up-to-date resources: • An Introduction to Biblical Greek Grammar, by Dana Harris • Grasping God’s Word, Fourth Edition, by J. Scott Duvall and J. Daniel Hays • The Collected Essays of N. T Wright, by N. T. Wright • Systematic Theology, Second Edition, by Wayne Grudem • How to Read Theology for All Its Worth, by Karin Spiecker Stetina • Evangelical Theology, Second Edition, by Michael F. Bird • Old Testament Use of Old Testament, by Gary Edward Schnittjer • Basics of Latin, by Derek Cooper • Basics of Arabic, by Ayman S. “Just when I wondered what N. T. Wright might write next we get a 3 volume circus of revolving themes and perspectives and worldviews that illustrate why Wright is the most influential biblical scholar in the English-speaking world: Wright is one of the few who shapes conversations in both Gospels studies and Pauline studies. These essays bring to the front Wright’s engaging prose, his undeniable courage to go where few have gone, and his joy to bridge the work of the academy and the church. Another treasure trove of studies.” —REV. CANON DR. SCOT MCKNIGHT+, Professor of New Testament, Northern Seminary “Few, if any, modern biblical scholars have written with the depth and breadth of N. T. Wright. These essays, from a wide variety of settings and publications, are full of treasures, old and new—even some modifications of earlier positions. They will delight Wright enthusiasts, challenge his critics, and educate all readers. No biblical scholar, theologian, or theological student should be ignorant of the most recent Wright perspectives on so many aspects of Scripture, Jesus, and Paul.” —MICHAEL J. GORMAN, Raymond E. Brown Chair in Biblical Studies and Theology St. Mary’s Seminary and University

Paul and the Hope of Glory An Exegetical and Theological Study Constantine R. Campbell In Paul and the Hope of Glory, Campbell conducts a thorough exegetical study of the relevant elements of Paul’s eschatological language, metaphors, and images including “parousia,” “the last day,” “inheritance,” “hope,” and others. He examines each passage in context, aiming to build inductively an overall sense of Paul’s thinking. The results of this exegetical study then feed into a theological study that demonstrates the integration of Paul’s eschatological thought into his broader theological framework. • The first part introduces the key issues--both exegetical and theological--and sets the parameters and methodology of the book. It also offers a historical survey of the scholarly work produced on Paul’s eschatology through the twentieth century to the present day. • The second part contains the detailed exegetical analysis, with chapters on each important Pauline phrase, metaphor, and image related to eschatology. • The third part turns its attention to theological synthesis. It recapitulates relevant conclusions from the evidence adduced in part two and launches into theological discussion engaging current issues and debates. This volume combines high-level scholarship and a concern for practical application of a topic currently debated in the academy and the church. More than a monograph, this book is a helpful reference tool for students, scholars, and pastors to consult for its treatment of any particular instance of any phrase or metaphor that relates to eschatology in Paul’s thinking. The New Testament in Antiquity Second Edition A Survey of the New Testament within Its Cultural Contexts Gary M. Burge and Gene L. Green “Academic rigor, accessible and engaging style, and visual appeal…The first edition was excellent; the revision is even better.” —MARK L. STRAUSS, Bethel Seminary “For years I have searched in vain for a book that would introduce students to the New Testament … My search is over; this is that book” —REV. CANON DR. SCOT MCKNIGHT+, Professor of New Testament Northern Seminary “As a text that has shaped my teaching for many years, I’m pleased to see the revised version retains its rigorous historical context which has continually set an excellent foundation for informed theological conversation.” —AMY L. PEELER, Wheaton College and Graduate School “Burge and Green have done a phenomenal job of connecting seminary students, undergraduates, pastors, and church leaders to the historically contingent and relevant message of the first-century authors so that modern interpreters can preach, teach, and apply that same message today.” —MAX LEE, North Park University This completely revised and updated second edition of The New Testament in Antiquity skillfully develops how Jewish, Hellenistic, and Roman cultures formed the essential environment in which the New Testament authors wrote their books and letters. Understanding of the land, history, and culture of the ancient world brings remarkable new insights into how we read the New Testament itself. Throughout the book, numerous features provide windows into the first-century world. Nearly 500 full color photos, charts, maps, and drawings have been carefully selected. Additional features include sidebars that integrate the book’s material with issues of interpretation, discussion questions, and bibliographies.

GREEK

An Introduction to Biblical Greek Grammar Elementary Syntax and Linguistics Dana M. Harris An Introduction to Biblical Greek Grammar focuses on the linguistic and syntactic elements of Koine Greek to equip learners for accurate interpretation. Drawing upon twenty years of Greek teaching experience and the latest developments in linguistics and syntax, Harris introduces students to basic concepts and categories necessary for grasping Greek in ways that are clear and intuitive. This solid foundation enables students first to internalize key concepts, then to apply and build upon them as more complex ideas are introduced. Several features are specifically designed to aid students' learning:

NEW RELEASE SEPTEMBER 2020 $59.99 | $35.99 ISBN 9780310108573 Hardcover - 608 pages

• Key concepts are graphically coded to offer visual reinforcement of explanations and to facilitate learning forms and identifying their functions. • Key concepts are followed by numerous examples from the Greek New Testament. • Students learn how to mark Greek texts so they can begin to "see" the syntax, identify the boundaries of syntactic units, and construct syntactic outlines as part of their preaching or teaching preparation. • Four integrative chapters, roughly corresponding to the midterms and final exams of a two-semester sequence, summarize material to date and reinforce key concepts. Here students are also introduced to exegetical and interpretive concepts and practices they will need for subsequent Greek studies and beyond. • "Going Deeper" and "For the Curious" offer supplemental information for students interested in learning more or in moving to advanced language study. The accompanying workbook and video lectures (both sold separately) reinforce key concepts through additional contact with the material from each chapter of the grammar. All exercises in the workbook are taken from the Greek New Testament and the Septuagint and include extensive syntactical and exegetical notes to aid students.

• Instructor’s manual • Presentation slides • Sample syllabus • Chapter quizzes • Midterm exam • Final exam

DANA M. HARRIS is associate professor of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois, and editor of the Trinity Journal. Dr. Harris has been teaching Koine Greek and developing innovative teaching materials for over thirty years, including twenty years at the seminary level. She is author of Hebrews in the Exegetical Guide to the Greek New Testament series (Broadman & Holman) and is currently working on two books on Revelation.

Basics of Ancient Ugaritic A Concise Grammar, Workbook, and Lexicon Michael Williams Basics of Ancient Ugaritic is a teaching grammar of this ancient language, one of vital importance for understanding the wider world and culture surrounding the Old Testament text. It begins with the alphabet, and each new lesson builds on the ones before it. It is not, therefore, a synthetic Ugaritic grammar—these types of texts often prove to be overwhelming for students. Instead, Basics of Ancient Ugaritic can be used for learning the language by individuals on their own or in a classroom setting. Each chapter concludes with a set of exercises allowing students to know whether they are grasping the fundamentals of the language. MICHAEL WILLIAMS (PhD, University of Pennsylvania) is Emeritus Senior Professor of Old Testament Studies at Calvin Theological Seminary, a member of the NIV Committee on Bible Translation and the Chairman of the NIrV Committee. His passion is to equip students with knowledge of the Old Testament and its languages so that they may grow in their comprehension and appreciation of redemptive history and be adequately prepared to promote and defend the faith through word and action. $49.99 | $29.99 | Softcover - 144 pages | ISBN 9780310495925

Hallam Basics of Classical Syriac is a beginning Syriac grammar, workbook, and lexicon all in one and can be used by independent learners or in a classroom setting. OLD TESTAMENT

Understanding Old Testament Theology Mapping the Terrain of Recent Approaches Brittany Kim and Charlie Trimm Over the past century, the field of Old Testament studies has seen an explosion of theologies of the Old Testament, a trend that has only intensified in the past ten or twenty years. This proliferation of literature has made it difficult for students, pastors, laity—and even scholars—to keep up with. In Understanding Old Testament Theology, professors Brittany Kim and Charlie Trimm clearly organize and explain the myriad contemporary approaches to Old Testament theology. The book begins by highlighting the flash points that have produced such a wide range of Old Testament theologies and presents a brief history of the discipline. It then explores various approaches to Old Testament theology in seven chapters, divided into three parts. • Part I examines approaches that ground Old Testament theology in history. • Part II surveys approaches that foreground Old Testament theme(s). Finally, NEW RELEASE DECEMBER 2020 $19.99 | $11.99 ISBN 9780310106470 Softcover - 192 pages

• Part III considers approaches that highlight different contexts for doing Old Testament theology. Each main chapter describes both common features of the approach and points of tension and then offers a test case illuminating how it has been applied to the book of Exodus. Accessible and unique, Understanding Old Testament Theology provides the only summary introduction of its kind to the field of Old Testament biblical theology.

BRITTANY KIM (PhD, Wheaton College) teaches Bible courses at North Park Theological Seminary. She is the author of “Lengthen Your Tent-Cords”: The Metaphorical World of Israel’s Household in the Book of Isaiah (Eisenbrauns). CHARLIE TRIMM (PhD, Wheaton College) is associate professor of biblical and theological studies at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University. He is the author of Fighting for the King and the Gods: A Survey of Warfare in the Ancient Near East (Society of Biblical Literature) and “YHWH Fights for Them!”: The Divine Warrior in the Exodus Narrative (Gorgias).

OLD TESTAMENT

Old Testament Use of Old Testament A Book-by-Book Guide Gary Edward Schnittjer Old Testament Use of Old Testament, by Gary Edward Schnittjer, surveys the hundreds of Old Testament allusions within the Old Testament and provides hermeneutical guidance for interpreting these interrelated scriptures. The handbook takes an easy to navigate book-by-book approach. Schnittjer provides a list of Scripture allusions for each book and follows with an interpretive profile of how that book uses passages from elsewhere in the Old Testament. Specific criteria are applied to each allusion, providing readers with evaluation of the significance of each interpretive allusion. Minor allusions caused by style, figures of speech, and other minor elements are not included. Responsible exegesis requires careful attention to interrelated scriptures, yet there is a host of interpretive difficulties related to Scripture’s use of Scripture. Designed for ease-of-use for any serious student of the Bible, Old Testament Use of Old Testament offers a thorough, systematic tool to aid in evaluating scriptural interpretation of Scripture. This dynamic tool equips students of the Bible to: • Understand how the Old Testament uses the Old Testament • Easily find the most important Old Testament allusions • Grasp the complexity of Scripture’s use of Scripture • Evaluate the significance of interpretive allusions • Gain exegetical insight into the study of interrelated Scriptures

GARY EDWARD SCHNITTJER (PhD, Dallas Theological Seminary) is professor of Old Testament at the School of Divinity, Cairn University in Langhorne, Pennsylvania. He is the author of The Torah Story.

“This is a wonderful user-friendly book for serious readers who desire to journey into the world of the Bible to understand it better and to live faithfully in today’s world ... What is especially valuable is the authors’ attention to both the ‘parts’ and the ‘whole’ of the Bible. They are as concerned with the Bible’s words and sentences as they are with its paragraphs and books. Why? Because they rightly see that one can understand the whole only in light of the parts, and the parts only in light of the whole.” —KEVIN J. VANHOOZER, Research Professor of Systematic Theology, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School “Grasping God’s Word, is a clear, accurate, engaging, and balanced introduction to interpreting and applying God’s Word. It leads students through the basic questions of how language works and where meaning resides in a written text. The journey of discovery introduced in Grasping God’s Word is an invitation into a relationship with God and his purpose in the world.” —MARK L. STRAUSS, University Professor of New Testament, Bethel University

How (Not) to Read the Bible Making Sense of the Anti-women, Anti-science, Pro-violence, Pro-slavery and Other Crazy Sounding Parts of Scripture Dan Kimball When Dan Kimball first sat down to meet with a student who was disillusioned by Christianity, he wasn’t ready for what he was about to hear. The student had a positive church experience. He was grateful for his youth leader. But he had serious objections to Christianity. Why? He had begun studying the Bible and found he could no longer accept what it taught. Reading the Bible had led him to become an atheist. In How (Not) to Read the Bible, pastor and bestselling author Dan Kimball tackles one of the most pressing apologetic challenges of the twenty-first-century church--how do we read and interpret the Bible? Kimball introduces several critical principles to utilize when you open a Bible or read a verse. Then, he looks at five of the most common challenges that arise when people read the Bible today, including: the relationship between science and the Bible, the violence we find in the Bible, the treatment of women in the Bible, the odd and strange commands we find in the Bible, and the Bible’s controversial claim that there is only one way to know God. Kimball highlights several of the most common passages people find objectionable and shows readers how to correctly interpret them. This is an ideal book for those exploring Christianity or new to the faith, as well as Christians who are wrestling with questions about these difficult issues and the challenges of interpreting the Bible. Filled with stories and examples, as well as visual illustrations and memes reflecting popular cultural objections, How (Not) to Read the Bible will motivate readers who are confused or discouraged by questions they have about the Bible and guides them—step-by-step—to a clear understanding of what the Bible is saying in context. The book can also be taught as a six-week sermon series or used in small groups for study and discussion.

DAN KIMBALL is the author of several books on leadership, church, and culture. He is on staff at Vintage Faith Church in Santa Cruz, California, and is a professor at George Fox University. He enjoys comic art, Ford Mustangs, and punk and rockabilly music. His passion is to see the church and Christians follow and represent Jesus in the world with love, intelligence, and creativity.

ANNOUNCING ENHANCED EDITIONS! Customizable digital textbooks for today’s classroom. “With schools rapidly moving toward more online offerings, Zondervan’s Enhanced Editions of textbooks is keeping them ahead of the curve, with textbook supporting tools like reflection questions, highlights, surveys, and much more.” —Mark L. Strauss, Bethel Seminary of Bethel University “I am pleased to recommend Enhanced Editions by Zondervan Academic. I ran a pilot project during the spring semester of 2020. We used a paper copy of the textbook, Grasping God’s Word, during the first half of the semester. We had just begun the pilot of the enhanced textbook when students were sent home, and teaching switched to online forums because of the pandemic.

Designed for today’s classroom, Enhanced Editions is a series of digital textbooks created to improve students’ learning.

I was able to augment the loss of personal face-to-face time using the enhanced textbook because I could highlight and annotate readings in advance. As a result, our more limited online discussions began at a higher level and we could arrive at the planned outcomes for the session even though the class participants were scattered across the country and were interacting remotely. I look forward to using Enhanced Editions again next spring when we are more experienced with using technology to teach in challenging times.” —Mark Schuler, Concordia University, St. Paul “Given the current climate and changes underway in education, Zondervan’s new Enhanced Editions could not come available at a better time. For both online and traditional on-campus teaching, the Enhanced ereader is more than a digital books platform. It’s a tool that customizes and integrates my assigned textbooks with my course syllabus, lecture notes, assessment material, personal comments and highlights, and supplementary media. It’s literally like having my students read the book over my shoulder with all the opportunities for integrating other technologies and media. It’s the next step in pedagogy, especially for theological education. The customization for professors and connectivity for students doesn’t just enhance the textbooks, it enhances the classroom!” —Benjamin T. Quinn, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary; BibleMesh Institute

A COMPANION TO THE

WORD BIBLICAL COMMENTARY SERIES Finding the great themes of the books of the Bible is essential to the study of God's Word and to the preaching and teaching of its truths. These themes and ideas are often like precious gems: they lie beneath the surface and can only be discovered with some difficulty. While commentaries are useful for helping readers understand the content of a verse or chapter, they are not usually designed to help the reader to trace important subjects systematically within a given book a Scripture. The Word Biblical Themes series helps readers discover the important themes of a book of the Bible. This series distills the theological essence of a given book of Scripture and serves it up in ways that enrich the preaching, teaching, worship, and discipleship of God's people. Volumes in this series: • Written by top biblical scholars • Feature authors who wrote on the same book of the Bible for the Word Biblical Commentary series • Distill deep and focused study on a biblical book into the most important themes and practical applications of them • Give readers an ability to see the "big picture" of a book of the Bible by understanding what topics and concerns were most important to the biblical writers • Help address pressing issues in the church today by showing how the biblical writers approached similar issues in their day • Ideal for sermon preparation and for other teaching in the church Word Biblical Themes are an ideal resource for any reader who has used and benefited from the Word Biblical Commentary series, and will help pastors, Bible teachers, and students as they seek to understand and apply God's Word to their ministry and learning.

THEOLOGY

Systematic Theology Second Edition

An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine Wayne Grudem The most widely used text of the last 25 years in its discipline, Systematic Theology by Wayne Grudem has been thoroughly revised and expanded (all 57 chapters) for the first time while retaining the features that have made it the standard in its field: clear explanations, an emphasis on each doctrine’s scriptural basis, and practical applications to daily life. With several hundred pages of new content, this new edition now includes the following distinctive features: • Updated, fuller analysis of several recent controversies within evangelicalism, including the eternal relationship between the Father and the Son in the Trinity, the question of God’s atemporal eternity, the role of women in the church, “seeker-sensitive” churches, miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit, and contemporary worship music • New, thoughtful critiques of open theism, the “new perspective on Paul,” Molinism (or “middle knowledge”), “Free Grace” theology, and the preterist view of Christ’s second coming • Completely revised, stronger chapter on the clarity of Scripture NEW RELEASE

• Completely revised, stronger chapter on creation and evolution (including a longer critique of theistic evolution)

DECEMBER 2020

• New discussion of how biblical inerrancy applies to some specific “problem verses” in the Gospels

$59.99 | $35.99 ISBN 9780310517979 Hardcover - 1472 pages

• Additional material respectfully explaining evangelical Protestant differences with Roman Catholicism, Protestant liberalism, and Mormonism. • Completely updated bibliographies • All Scripture quotations updated from RSV to ESV • An explanation of why monogens in John 3:16 and elsewhere should be translated as “only begotten” rather than merely “only” (this is a change from the first edition) • A contemporary worship song added at the end of each chapter (while retaining the traditional hymns as well)

• Instructor’s manual • Presentation slides • Sample syllabus • Chapter quizzes • Midterm exam

• Numerous other updates and corrections Part of the brilliance of Systematic Theology over the years has been its simplicity and ease of use. Each chapter follows the same structure. First, there is discussion of the doctrine being considered, such as justification or the Trinity or the deity of Christ. An explanation of where that doctrine is supported in the Bible and possible objections follow. Personal application and key terms to know for personal growth are then provided. Chapters also include a scripture memory passage, references to other literature on the topic, and suggested hymns and worship songs.

• Final exam ZondervanAcademic.com

THEOLOGY

The Classic Bestseller, Completely Updated I can neither quantify nor qualify all the ways in which Wayne Grudem’s Systematic Theology has assisted me over the past 25 years. I’ve turned to it innumerable times and for innumerable reasons and it has invariably proven a trusted and steady guide. It was there when I was first exploring Christian doctrine and there when I was ready to dive deeper. I can truly say that few books have been more meaningful or had more influence. With the arrival of this long-awaited second edition, it is fitting that the book that has so guided me and my generation can be refreshed in such a way that it can equally impact my children and theirs. I have every confidence that it will.” —TIM CHALLIES, author of Epic: An Around The World Journey Through Christian History “Wayne Grudem’s second edition of his Systematic Theology displays all the virtues of the first. He shows and explains how the doctrines discussed stem from the biblical text. Even if readers disagree here or there, they understand why Grudem argues as he does since he makes his case from the Scriptures. The book stands out for its clarity and accessibility. Academics, immersed in technical study for years, are prone to forget that most people have never read a systematic theology before. The lucidity and simplicity of Grudem makes his work an ideal textbook. This is not to say that scholars cannot profit from his work as well since he lays out arguments cogently. The pastoral tone of the work shines through as well. The hymns and songs concluding the chapters remind us that theology isn’t a matter of abstract teaching but should lead us to praise and worship of the Lord.” —THOMAS R. SCHREINER, James Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament Interpretation and Professor of Biblical Theology, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary “How does one improve on a classic? You can’t, say some. But I beg to differ. In this second and expanded edition of Systematic Theology, Wayne Grudem has made his classic work even better, more insightful, significantly more detailed, and an even greater resource for the Christian and the local church. When I’m asked to recommend a good and comprehensive volume on christian doctrine and practice, I never hesitate. My encouragement is precise and to the point: Get Grudem!” —SAM STORMS, PhD, Lead Pastor for Preaching and Vision, Bridgeway Church, Oklahoma City

THEOLOGY

Evangelical Theology Second Edition A Biblical and Systematic Introduction Michael F. Bird “Evangelical Theology is a gift to God’s people. This robust theological exposition produces the intellectual, moral, and spiritual growth that fuels the personal and public witness of the church.” —WALTER R. STRICKLAND II, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary Evangelical Theology, Second Edition helps today’s readers understand and practice the doctrines of the Christian faith by presenting a gospel-centered theology that is accessible, rigorous, and balanced. According to author Michael Bird, the gospel is the fulcrum of Christian doctrine; the gospel is where God meets us and where we introduce the world to God. And as such, an authentically evangelical theology is the working out of the gospel in the various doctrines of Christian theology. The text helps readers learn the essentials of Christian theology through several key features, including: NEW RELEASE

• A “What to Take Home” section at the end of every part that gives readers a run-down on all the important things they need to know

OCTOBER 2020

• Tables, sidebars, and questions for discussion to help reinforce key ideas and concepts

$59.99 | $35.99 ISBN 9780310093978 Hardcover - 1008 pages

• A “Comic Belief ” section, since reading theology can often be dry and cerebral, so that readers enjoy their learning experience through some theological humor added for good measure Now in its second edition, Evangelical Theology has proven itself in classrooms around the world as a resource that not only helps readers understand the vital doctrines of Christian theology but that shows them how the gospel should shape how they think, pray, preach, teach, and minister in the world.

• Instructor’s manual • Presentation slides • Sample syllabus • Chapter quizzes • Midterm exam • Final exam

MICHAEL F. BIRD is Academic Dean and lecturer in theology at Ridley College in Melbourne, Australia. He is the author of Jesus and the Origins of the Gentile Mission, The Saving Righteousness of God, Evangelical Theology, Romans (Story of God Bible Commentary Series), The Gospel of the Lord: How the Early Church Wrote the Story of Jesus, and editor of The Apostle Paul: Four Views. THEOLOGY

Third Person of the Trinity Explorations in Constructive Dogmatics Oliver D. Crisp and Fred Sanders Recent decades have witnessed increased attention on the Holy Spirit, recognizing it as a critical component in Christian thought. While the volume of publications on the Spirit indicate that scholarly discussion about the Spirit is both creative and lively, it does sometimes appear to be diffused across the spectrum of contemporary theological thought. Nowhere does this scattering seem more prevalent than when discussion of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit occurs in outlying areas of doctrine and practice rather than within its native context—the doctrine of God. The 2020 Los Angeles Theology Conference examined pneumatology as a core component of the doctrine of the Trinity, offering constructive proposals for understanding the doctrine of the Holy Spirit with theological and historical depth, ecumenical scope, and analytic clarity. This book represents the proceedings of the conference. Contributors include: NEW RELEASE DECEMBER 2020 $34.99 | $20.99 ISBN 9780310106913 Softcover - 256 pages

CHURCH HISTORY/HISTORICAL THEOLOGY

The Global Church

The First Eight Centuries From Pentecost through the Rise of Islam Donald D. Fairbairn The Christian church of the early centuries spread throughout much of Asia, Africa, and Europe, spoke many languages, was situated within diverse cultural settings, and had varied worship practices; yet it maintained a vital unity on core teachings. In The Global Church—The First Eight Centuries: From Pentecost through the Rise of Islam, author Donald Fairbairn helps readers understand both the diversity and unity of the church in this pivotal era by: • Re-centering the story of the church in its early centuries, paying greater attention to Africa, Turkey, and Syria, where most of the church’s intellectual energy was nurtured • Highlighting Christian communities outside the Roman Empire, as far afield as Persia and India, alongside those within it • Identifying key events by their global, not merely Western, significance and taking into account early Christian interactions with other religions, particularly Islam

NEW RELEASE

The Global Church—The First Eight Centuries is an ideal introduction to the patristic era that broadens the narrative often recounted and places it more firmly in its various cultural contexts. Students of the early church, formal and informal alike, will appreciate the fresh approach and depth of insight it provides.

How to Fight Racism Courageous Christianity and the Journey Toward Racial Justice Jemar Tisby Racism is pervasive in today’s world, and many are complicit in the failure to confront its evils. Jemar Tisby, author of the award-winning The Color of Compromise, believes we need to move beyond mere discussions about racism and begin equipping people with the practical tools to fight against it. How to Fight Racism is a handbook for pursuing racial justice with handson suggestions bolstered by real-world examples of change. Tisby offers an array of actionable items to confront racism in our relationships and in everyday life through a simple framework—the A.R.C. of Racial Justice— that helps readers consistently interrogate their own actions and maintain a consistent posture of anti-racist action. This book is for anyone who believes it is time to stop compromising with racism and courageously confront it. Tisby roots the ultimate solution to racism in the Christian faith as we embrace the implications of what Jesus taught his followers. Beginning in the church, he provides an opportunity to be part of the solution and suggests that the application of these principles can offer us hope that will transform our nation and the world. God and the Pandemic A Christian Reflection on the Coronavirus and Its Aftermath N. T. Wright Discover a different way of seeing and responding to the Coronavirus pandemic, an approach drawing on Scripture, Christian history, and the way of living, thinking, and praying revealed to us by Jesus. What are we supposed to think about the Coronavirus crisis? Some people think they know: “This is a sign of the End,” they say. “It’s all predicted in the book of Revelation.” Others disagree but are equally clear: “This is a call to repent. God is judging the world and through this disease he’s telling us to change.” Some join in the chorus of blame and condemnation: “It’s the fault of the Chinese, the government, the World Health Organization…” N. T. Wright examines these reactions to the virus and finds them wanting. Instead, he shows that a careful reading of the Bible and Christian history offers simple though profound answers to our many questions, including: • What should be the Christian response? • How should we think about God? • How do we live in the present? • Why should we lament? • What should we learn about ourselves? • How do we recover? Written by one of the world’s foremost New Testament scholars, God and the Pandemic will serve as your guide to read the events of today through the light of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Confronting Injustice without Compromising Truth 12 Questions Christians Should Ask About Social Justice Thaddeus Williams “Dr. Thaddeus Williams and his 12 coauthors are important voices for helping us pursue the kind of justice that starts with God, champions our oneness in Christ, declares the gospel, and refuses to compromise truth. I believe the 12 questions Thaddeus raises in the book are the right questions we should all be asking in today’s troubled world.” —from the Foreword by JOHN M. PERKINS God does not suggest, he commands that we do justice. Social justice is not optional for the Christian. All injustice affects others, so talking about justice that isn’t social is like talking about water that isn’t wet or a square with no right angles. But the Bible’s call to seek justice is not a call to superficial, kneejerk activism. We are not merely commanded to execute justice, but to “truly execute justice.” The God who commands us to seek justice is the same God who commands us to “test everything” and “hold fast to what is good.”

NEW RELEASE DECEMBER 2020 $22.99 | $13.79 ISBN 9780310119487 Softcover - 240 pages

Drawing from a diverse range of theologians, sociologists, artists, and activists, Confronting Injustice without Compromising Truth, by Thaddeus Williams, makes the case that we must be discerning if we are to “truly execute justice” as Scripture commands. Not everything called “social justice” today is compatible with a biblical vision of a better world. The Bible offers hopeful and distinctive answers to deep questions of worship, community, salvation, and knowledge that ought to mark a uniquely Christian pursuit of justice. Topics addressed include: • Racism • Socialism • Abortion • Critical Theory • Sexuality • Culture War • Tribalism • Identity Politics Confronting Injustice without Compromising Truth also brings in unique voices to talk about their experiences with these various social justice issues, including: • Edwin Ramirez • Michelle-Lee Barnwall • Becket Cook • Suresh Budhaprithi • Bella Danusiar • Samuel Sey • Eddie Byun • Monique Duson • Neil Shenvi • Freddie Cardoza • Ojo Okeye • Walt Sobchak In Confronting Injustice without Compromising Truth, Thaddeus Williams transcends our religious and political tribalism and challenges readers to discover what the Bible and the example of Jesus have to teach us about justice. He presents a compelling vision of justice for all God’s image-bearers that offers hopeful answers to life’s biggest questions. THADDEUS J. WILLIAMS (PhD, Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam) loves enlarging students’ understanding and enjoyment of Jesus at Biola University in La Mirada, California, where he serves as assistant professor of Systematic Theology for Talbot School of Theology. He has also taught philosophy and literature at Saddleback College, jurisprudence at Trinity Law School, and as a lecturer in worldview studies at L’Abri Fellowships in Switzerland and Holland, and Ethics for Blackstone Legal Fellowship the Federalist Society in Washington DC. 2084 Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Humanity John C. Lennox In 2084, scientist and philosopher John C. Lennox addresses the questions of where humanity is going in terms of technological enhancement, bioengineering, and artificial intelligence. He provides a clear overview of the current capacity of AI, its advantages and disadvantages, as well as the potential future implications, clearly defining the terms associated with this field and delineating between the current scientific facts and more speculative claims. Lennox argues that the worldview, and therefore ethics, with which we approach this area will have serious implications for any future AI and how it interacts with humanity. JOHN C. Politics after Christendom Political Theology in a Fractured World David VanDrunen Politics after Christendom argues that living faithfully as a Christian is possible in a world that is indifferent or even hostile to the Christian faith. Drawing from Augustine’s two-cities theory, Luther’s two-kingdoms approach, natural law, and a theology of the biblical covenants, author David VanDrunen distinctively joins these ideas together to present a comprehensive model for Christian political engagement. A significant contribution to political theology that offers a unique blend of biblical, theological, and political reflection on perennial questions about the basis and authority of civil society and the relationship of God’s people to government authority. DAVID VANDRUNEN (JD, Northwestern University School of Law; PhD, Loyola University Chicago) is Robert B. Strimple Professor of Systematic Theology and Christian Ethics at Westminster Seminary California. $29.99 | $17.99 | Softcover - 400 pages | ISBN 9780310108849

The Color of Compromise The Truth about the American Church’s Complicity in Racism Jemar Tisby An acclaimed, timely narrative of how people of faith have historically—up to the present day—worked against racial justice. And a call for urgent action by all Christians today in response. The Color of Compromise is both enlightening and compelling, telling a history we either ignore or just don’t know. Equal parts painful and inspirational, it details how the American church has helped create and maintain racist ideas and practices. You will be guided in thinking through concrete solutions for improved race relations and a racially inclusive church. Three Views on Christianity and Science Michael Ruse, Alister E. McGrath, and Bruce L. Gordon Editors: Paul Copan and Christopher L. Reese When it comes to relating Christianity to modern Western culture, perhaps no topic is more controversial than the relationship between Christianity and science. Outside the church, the myth of an age-old conflict between science and Christianity is nearly ubiquitous in popular culture and can poison the well before a fruitful dialogue can begin. Within the church, opposing viewpoints on the relation between Christianity and science often lead to division and rancor. Three Views on Christianity and Science addresses both types of conflict. Featuring leading evangelical representatives, it presents three primary options for the compatibility of Christianity and science and models constructive dialogue on the surrounding controversial issues. The highlighted contributors and their views are: • Michael Ruse, Independence View: When functioning correctly, science and Christian theology operate independently of each other, seeking answers to different questions through different means. • Alister McGrath, Dialogue View: Though the natural sciences and Christian philosophy and theology function differently, they can and should inform each other. • Bruce L. Gordon, Constrained Integration View: Science, philosophy, and theology all contribute to our understanding of reality. Their interactions constrain each other and together present an optimally coherent and integrated picture of reality. By engaging with the viewpoints of the contributors, readers will come away with a deeper understanding of the compatibility of science and Christianity, as well as of the positions of those who disagree with them. Scholars, students, pastors, and interested laypeople will be able to make use of this material in research, assignments, sermons and lessons, evangelism, and apologetics.

Theological Ethics The Moral Life of the Gospel in Contemporary Context W. Ross Hastings Be Prepared to Think Theologically through Today’s Most Pressing Ethical and Moral Issues In Theological Ethics theologian, pastor, and ethicist W. Ross Hastings gives pastors, ministry leaders, and students a guide designed to equip them to think deeply and theologically about the moral formation of persons in our communities, about ethical inquiry and action, and about the tone and content of our engagement in the public square. The book presents a biblical perspective and a gospel-centered framework for thinking about complex contemporary issues in ways that are life-giving and that will lead readers into greater flourishing as human persons in community. This book is distinctive in presenting: • A framework for theological ethics that is robustly theological and Trinitarian. Ethics isolated from the gospel and theology becomes bad news, but when it is informed by and empowered by participation in the triune God of grace, it is part of the good news of the gospel. • An approach to theology and theological ethics that makes the Word of God the ultimate authority, and it is therefore grounded in the biblical narrative and texts. • An understanding that theological ethics are inherently missional. The church as the image of the triune God makes it the home of ethics, but in light of its missional identity, it will reverberate outward to engage the world in ways that are humble and not power-mongering, that are gospelbased and shalom-evoking. Theological Ethics is for those who lead churches or ministries (or someday will) and who urgently need deep theological grounding as they daily encounter ethical and moral issues where they need to provide a gracious, truthful, and gospel-directed response.

W. ROSS HASTINGS is associate professor of pastoral theology at Regent College in Vancouver, Canada. He is the author of Total Atonement, as well as articles in peer-reviewed journals such as the International Journal of Systematic Theology and Scottish Journal of Theology.

“With intellectual verve and winsome charm, Telling a Better Story not only tells but shows how the gospel out-narrates all the other plots on offer.” —MICHAEL HORTON, professor, Westminster Seminary

The practice of offering reasons for the Christian faith, or apologetics, strikes many unbelievers today as offensive. Christians themselves often view apologetics as unsophisticated or even faith-undermining—an attempt to argue people to belief instead of focusing on presenting the gospel. In Telling a Better Story, author Joshua Chatraw presents a new and better way to do apologetics, an inside-out approach that is attuned to our late-modern moment and respectful of unbelievers, all the while remaining focused on Jesus. With attention to cultural understanding, dealing with the difficult issues, and presenting Jesus in a holistic, contextual manner, Telling a Better Story offers a roadmap to effective apologetics both for experienced apologists and those new to sharing their faith with others. An action-oriented book filled with practical takeaways by an up-and-coming young author, Telling a Better Story reimagines how apologetics can help Christians have gracious, day-to-day conversations with those who see the world differently than they do. JOSHUA D. CHATRAW (PhD, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary) serves as the director for New City Fellows and the resident theologian at Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Raleigh, North Carolina. His books include Apologetics at the Cross, Cultural Engagement, Truth in a Culture of Doubt, and Truth Matters. He is a fellow with the Center for Pastor Theologians and has served in both pastoral and academic posts during his ministry.

The History of Apologetics follows the great apologists in the history of the church to understand how they approached the task of apologetics in their own cultural and theological context. Each chapter looks at the life of a well-known apologist including his theology and methodology, detailing how they approached the task of defending the faith. Covering a spectrum of theological and denominational commitments to highlight history’s greatest apologists, readers will learn not only their arguments but also their stories and the cultural opportunities and challenges they were responding to. At its core, The History of Apologetics guides readers through the wisdom (and sometimes folly) of the past so that they will be able to better grasp the contextualized nature of apologetics and apply those insights to today’s context. BENJAMIN K. FORREST (EdD, Liberty University) is professor of Christian education and associate dean at Liberty University. He is coauthor of Surviving and Thriving in Seminary (w/H. D. Zacharias, Lexham, 2017), Good Arguments: Making Your Case in Writing and Public Speaking (w/R. A. Holland and Baker Academic, 2017), and coeditor of Biblical Leadership: Theology for the Everyday Leader (w/Chet Roden, Kregel, 2017). JOSHUA D. King Jesus and the Beauty of Obedience-Based Discipleship David Young A bold call for obedience-based discipleship Many have wrongly associated obedience with bad theology, believing that Jesus’ demand for obedience is a form of works righteousness or legalism. Others simply don’t like obedience and resist the demands Jesus makes in calling us to follow him. The kingship of Jesus has implications for how we live. We can either rebel against him, raising puppet kings and constructing our own kingdoms, or we can submit to him in obediencebased discipleship. Could it be that you are still sitting on the throne of your life, treating King Jesus as a mere advisor? What would change in your life if you started treating Jesus as nothing short of your King? “I’m not being polite when I say this, but if a person was only going to buy one book on small groups, I’d direct them to Leading Small Groups That Thrive!” —BILL SEARCH, pastor and author of Essential Guide for Small Group Leaders

Understanding Spiritual Gifts provides a comprehensive guide to the spiritual gifts, Storms addresses the many bizarre and misleading interpretations that abound and confronts the tendency to downplay the urgency of spiritual gifts for Christian living and ministry.

Nearly every church is trying to help their congregants build relationships with others, grow as disciples, and/or engage in meaningful service through small groups. Many have argued that these small groups are the preferred vehicle for relationship building, disciple making, and membership assimilation in the local church, especially in large, multisite churches.

Part 1: The Nature, Purpose, and Prayerful Pursuit of Spiritual Gifts • Supernatural Power for Life and Ministry. • Spiritual Gifts: What Are They, and Why Does God Give Them? • How Many Spiritual Gifts Are There, and How Many Might a Christian Receive? • Our Responsibility to Desire and Pray for Spiritual Gifts Part 2: The Debate over the Cessation or Continuation of Miraculous Gifts of the Spirit • Biblical and Theological Arguments in Support of Cessationism • Excursus: A Response to Jonathan Edwards on the Cessation of the Charismata • Biblical and Theological Arguments in Support of Continuationism • The Evidence from Church History Part 3: Revelatory Gifts of the Spirit • Word of Wisdom and Word of Knowledge • The Nature and Purpose of the Spiritual Gift of Prophecy • Is the New Testament Spiritual Gift of Prophecy Different from Old Testament Prophecy? • Judging Prophetic Utterances, and the Spiritual Gift of Discerning of Spirits

Leading Small Groups That Thrive shows small group leaders, step by step, how to plan for, launch, build, sustain, and multiply highly effective, transformational, healthy small group experiences where people grow spiritually together. RYAN T. HARTWIG is Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and Professor of Communication at Colorado Christian University, where he teaches group, organizational, and leadership communication courses. COURTNEY W. DAVIS is Assistant Professor of Communication Studies at Azusa Pacific University, where she teaches organizational, small group, and professional communication. JASON A. Most Christians know they should be trying to tell their friends and family about Jesus. But in a post-Christendom world, personal evangelism is viewed negatively—it’s offensive, inappropriate, and insensitive. Recent studies confirm that the majority of Christians rarely evangelize, worried they might offend their family or lose their friends. In How to Talk About Jesus (Without Being That Guy), author Sam Chan equips everyday Christians who are reluctant and nervous to tell their friends about Jesus with practical, tested ways of sharing their faith in the least awkward ways possible. Drawing from over two decades of experience as an evangelist, teacher, and pastor, Chan explains why personal evangelism feels so awkward today. Utilizing recent insights from communication theory, cross-cultural ministry, and apologetics, he helps you build confidence in sharing your faith, and teaches you how to evangelize your friends and family in socially appropriate ways.

“Against the backdrop of a toxic, sex-saturated culture and an increasingly secularized church, this book argues forcefully for a recovery of a biblically grounded understanding of humanity. This is a brave and much-needed book.” —DAVID F. WELLS, distinguished senior research professor, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary “In this accessible book, Tennent helps the church think about a desperately needed Protestant theology of the body. This book will be a help to pastors and all Christians seeking God’s good will for our bodies.” —BETH FELKER JONES, professor of theology, Wheaton College, author, Faithful: A Theology of Sex

From the beginning of his ministry, Jesus called and equipped individuals who would serve his community of followers. These “shepherds” are called to preach, pray, and care for the needs of God’s people. But what does it mean to be a pastor? And what is the nature of this ministry, according to the Bible? In Gospel-Driven Ministry, Jared Wilson begins by looking at the qualifications for the pastorate, addressing the notion of a call to ministry and how an individual—and a church community—can best identify the marks of maturity to affirm a call. In each chapter, Wilson looks at one of the core practices of pastoral ministry, including:

The human body is an amazing gift. Yet today, many people downplay its importance and fail to understand what Christianity teaches about our bodies and their God-given purposes. We misunderstand how the body was designed, its role in relating to others, and lack awareness of the dangers of objectifying the body.

Preaching Sermons Developing a Vibrant Prayer Life Caring and Counseling Pastoring Married and Single Gospel-Centered Leadership Fighting Sin and Spiritual Warfare Resolving Conflict Passing on the Ministry to Others

In For the Body, Timothy Tennent looks at what it means to be created in the image of God and how our bodies serve as icons that illuminate God’s purposes. Tennant examines topics like marriage, family, singleness, and friendship, showing how the human bodyhas been objectified in contemporary art and media. He also offersa framework for discipling people today in a Christian theology of the body.

In addition, Wilson provides practical resources including theological insights on baptism and the Lord’s Supper, guidance for wedding and funeral sermons, outlines for leading elder and deacon meetings, tips for interviewing new pastors, questions to ask at ordination, and advice on knowing when and how to leave a pastoral role. Gospel-Centered Ministry is a comprehensive, practical guide to pastoral ministry that prepares new pastors and equips those currently serving for long-term, healthy ministry.

The Apostle Paul was a veteran church planter who “laid a foundation like a wise and master builder” and there is much we can learn from his example. Paul indicated that there were basic skills and experiences required to successfully plant a church. Church Plantology examines the wide variety of church planting methods and ideologies in contemporary pastoral practice and outlines a biblical model based on the New Testament. While in prison, Paul spent much of his time writing to Titus, Timothy, and others who served alongside him in the trenches to complete their training as church planters. We can continue to apply these time-tested, proven methods, following the pioneering example of the early church. Today, the casualty rate is high. What if we could reduce the odds of failure? Church Plantology by Peyton Jones is a robust guide to church planting that helps planters by providing the foundational guidance necessary to survive beyond the initial years of a plant and don’t become just another failed church plant. PEYTON JONES has been on the front lines of ministry for over ten years. In 1999, at the age of 25, he moved to Europe, and served as the evangelist at Lloyd-Jones’s legendary Sandfields church, Aberavon. An accidental church planter, Jones planted in a Starbucks before returning to America, and planting in inner-city Long Beach. Jones received his MA Theology: Pastoral Studies from Wales Evangelical School of Theology, and is the Regional Catalyst for NAMB. He is also the host of the Jump School Core Team Training Series, Managing Editor of Church Planter Magazine and the co-host of the weekly Church Planter Podcast.

African-Americans have long confronted the challenge of dignity destruction caused by white supremacy. While many have found meaning and the restoration of dignity in the black church, others have found it in ethnocentric socioreligious groups and philosophies. These ideologies have grown and developed deep traction in the black community and beyond. Previously found primarily in urban communities and socially-conscious Hiphop songs, the internet has provided these philosophies with an unparalleled reach. Revisionist history, conspiracy theories, and misinformation about Jesus and Christianity are the order of the day. Many young African-Americans are disinterested in Christianity and others are leaving the church in search of what these false ideologies appear to offer, a spirituality more indigenous to their history and ethnicity. Edited by Dr. Eric Mason and featuring a top-notch lineup of contributors, Urban Apologetics is the first book focused entirely on cults, religious groups, and ethnocentric ideologies prevalent in the black community. It brings the church up to speed on the legitimate issues that blacks have with Western culture and addresses the questions alternative religious groups pose about historic Christianity. In doing so, Urban Apologetics applies the gospel to black identity, showing that Jesus is the only one who can restore our identity. ERIC MASON (DMin, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary) is the founder and lead pastor of Epiphany Fellowship in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the founder and president of Thriving, an urban resource organization committed to developing leaders for ministry in the urban context. He has authored four books: Manhood Restored, Beat God to the Punch, Unleashed, and Woke Church.
