MAKESHIFT(ING): INFRASTRUCTURE & SOUND ON THE LAGOS LAGOON GSAPP FALL 2009, ADVANCED STUDIO V: MABEL WILSON

The sounds of Lagos have inspired a proposal that both edges the city and deeply embeds within it. Sited along the soft boundary where the Makoko slum community thins out in the Lagoon, the soundspaces are defined by their aural, material and light characteristics, allowing for inhabitation by a range of possible programs. In a city where spaces are often activated in unplanned ways, this community center is built through relationships of sound and light, encouraging agency within the soundspace. The result offers availability for laying social and political infrastructure - a partnership deeply rooted in the political history of Lagos’ music scene.

  INTERIOR VIEW OF COMMUNITY KITCHEN

This alternate proposal for the 50 km bridge spanning Hong Kong and Macau addresses the giants of infrastructure and politics at the intimate scale of the body and the grand scale of the earth. For economic and ecological reasons, this bridge encourages the use of rail cars for passenger and cargo movement. Unique decks for East-West and West-East rail traffic together form an energy loop, capitalizing on the elevation changes and slope to provide gravity, momentum and friction for controlling speed approximating a “closed loop. At the most extreme elevations, human scale experience is allowed along the 1000 foot height of the tower, and onto a landscaped platform at water level. The flow is diverted and slowed; attention goes from viewing the landscape at speed to viewing speed from the landscape.

POST-RESERVATION

VISUALIZING HOUSING, ECONOMY & INFRASTRUCTURE ON THE CHEYENNE RIVER RESERVATION

PERCIVAL GOODMAN FELLOWSHIP 2010 Zoë Malliaros & Annie Coombs A current map of the United States shows boundaries around 55.7 million acres of American Indian Reservation land, which represents 2.3% of the United States’ land area. These areas are often neglected in the greaterdiscussion of successes and failures of the nation, and they are rarely considered in the discussion of current architecture, planning and urban studies. Post-Reservation addresses the scarcity of information, documentation and critical discussion pertaining to the current conditions on the reservations, with a focus on the Lakota Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota. Post-Reservation specifically addresses land status and infrastructure as they relate to housing, economy, employment, education, and sovereignty. Post-Reservation’s interviews, photography, mapping and data collection focus on documentation, dialogue, and connectivity. The project compiles a textured body of research that speaks to the current state of the Cheyenne River Reservation and opens a discussion about the means and methods for future development in Indian country. This discussion is meant to bring awareness at both the local and national level, thus making this information visible, coherent and accessible. The aim of Post-Reservation is twofold; to engage local participation in shaping the future built conditions of the reservation and simultaneously to engage the greater national design community in a mzzore robust dialogue about these spaces. In order to engage at several scales, the project will be presented in exhibition and publication formats, and through the distribution of an informational manual focused on local building strategies and resources.
