Zakaj danes govoriti o normi? Norma, implicitna ali eksplicitna, je vedno prisotna v sporazumevanju na tak ali drugačen način. V pričujoči monografiji bomo predstavili normo v prevodu, kot jo spoznavamo v teoriji in praksi. Monografija prinaša dvanajst prispevkov s področja prevodoslovja in analize prevodnega diskurza v nemščini, francoščini in angleščini. Jasna Tatar Anđelić govori o normah v sodnem tolmačenju v kontekstu črnogorskega jezika, ki ga primerja s predpisi Evropske unije in bivših jugoslovanskih republik. Natalija Kaloh Vid in Vlasta Kučiš v okviru kritične analize diskurza obravnavata normo pri prevajanju mednarodno prepoznavnih oglasov avtomobilske industrije in pokažeta, kako je prodajno-promocijski učinek oglaševanja še vedno odvisen od jezikovne in kulturne adaptacije sporočila, ki mora upoštevati ciljno kulturo. Petra Zajc analizira prevajanje kuharskih knjig in se osredotoča na njihov kulturni pomen in jezik, za katerega je značilna prisotnost kulturnospecifičnih elementov. Obravnava značilnosti receptov v izvirnih slovenskih kuharskih knjigah in

Mojca Schlamberger Brezar in Ada Gruntar Jermol

OVERVIEW OF THE ARTICLES

The article focuses on the research and comparison of the use of non-finite clauses in original Slovenian literary texts and Slovenian translations of novels from French, thus representing an important step forward with regard to our previous researches on the use of non-finite clauses in French and in translated Slovenian. Our previous findings that the fact of keeping some types of non-finite clauses in the novels translated into Slovenian is not insignificant raise a question about the actual use of non-finite clauses in original Slovenian texts. On the one hand, this research aims to verify the statements by Breznik who advised about fifty years ago against the use of non-finite clauses in Slovenian, saying it was a Romance structure. On the other hand, we wish to evaluate the use of non-finite clauses in

translated Slovenian texts compared to their use in original Slovenian texts. This corpus-based research of contemporary novels focuses on the use of sentenceinitial participial clauses that many researchers and Slovenian native speakers “perceive” as the most archaic, and brings important findings about the current translation and language norms regarding the studied structures. Exploring norms in simultaneous interpreting Jana Zidar Forte Within descriptive translation studies, norms refer to what “guides the way translations are produced and received” (Pym 2009) and were first introduced by Toury (1995) when considering the variety of choices made during the translation process leading to the end product. Several scholars applied the same concept also to the field of interpreting in general (Shlesinger 1989, Chesterman 1999, Gile 1999) and specifically to simultaneous interpreting (Diriker 1999, Marzocchi 2005, Zwischenberger 2015) where the issue of norms was often associated with quality and expertise. Following the research method advocated by Gile (1999), the present paper aims to present general norms in simultaneous interpreting based on extratextual sources (Toury 1995), namely interpreters’ views about norms gathered in an online survey of around 180 interpreters, interpreter trainers and trainee interpreters. With slight variations occurring in results across different groups as well as between formally trained and untrained interpreters, the overall results of the survey indicate that simultaneous interpreting is governed by relatively clear and established norms. Although interpreting is usually considered an oral form of translation, the norms in interpreting seem to coincide with the norms of written translations, focusing primarily on fidelity of the message, correct grammar and fluency. Key words: simultaneous interpreting, interpreters, norms, expectations, quality

Translation Norms and Ideology in the Classroom: The Case of the Car Slogans Vlasta Kučiš, Natalija Kaloh-Vid The current analysis was developed as a part of a general context of evaluating the effect of the critical discourse analysis (CDA) as the main tool of ideologically oriented textual analysis on translation process, in this case on translations of popular advertising slogans from the automobile industry. The analysis is based on the results of the pilot project, which was carried out by the authors in cooperation with MA students from the Department of Translation Studies, University of Maribor. In a modern and globalized world advertising texts have become an integral part of a consumer-oriented society. Among other issues, advertising texts take into a close consideration moral values, principles, customs, tradition and norms of the target society. Although English acquired the position of lingua francae, a successful promotional effect of advertising still depends on a linguistic and cultural adaptation of the message for the target audience, i.e. consumers (localization). Successful and effective translation of advertising texts depends on creativity and competences of a translator as an intercultural mediator, who interprets new communication values within certain ideological norms of the target society. As future professionals in multilingual mediation, students should be aware of responsibilities and challenges when choosing translation strategies aimed to achieve the same advertising effect in the target culture. Given the fact that ideology is one of the key social discourses, it is important for students to realize that they can use various translation approaches which always reflect certain linguistic and ideological norms. The analysis is based on Slovene translations of German and English advertising slogans of automobile brands, focusing on ideological and normative aspects of a successful transferring of information in these

slogans. We paid a special attention to the use of formal and informal addressing forms, abbreviations, omissions and expansions within the text. Key words: ideology, norms, critical discourse analysis, skopos theory, advertising

Slovenian geographical names in French tourist guides Danaja Seražin Source language geographical names can either be transferred, entirely naturalized or partially adapted when introduced in a translated text. The main objective was to identify translation procedures adopted for Slovenian toponyms in French tourism texts, taking into account the relevant findings and recommendations of Slovene and foreign linguists. Our method consisted of analyzing different types of geographical names from a corpus of several tourist guides about Slovenia in French. Additionally, our goal was to examine the grammatical aspect of these toponyms and their orthography to determine any deviations from the Slovenian and French norms. The translation procedures proved to be exceptionally diverse and inconsistently used not only among different tourist guides but also in individual tourist guides, with the prevalence of translation procedures combining target and source-oriented approaches. The grammatical aspect of toponyms in terms of capitalization and the use of the French definite article was also found unsystematic and often contrary to the norm. In conclusion, we found there is a need for greater standardization of translation approaches to Slovenian toponyms in French tourism texts as well as greater consideration of appropriate grammatical and orthographic conventions. Key words: geographical names, toponyms, translation procedures, tourism texts, orthography

OVERVIEW OF THE ARTICLES

Abnormal Norms: The Persistence of Deviant Solutions in Slovenian-English Translation Donald Reindl All translators owe a great debt to the efforts of their predecessors, who helped establish solutions to challenging language-specific issues in translation. Over time, many of these solutions—especially lexical solutions involving culturally and historically specific concepts—have taken on the status of norms in Slovenian-English translation practice. On the one hand, this has served a positive role by creating a degree of consistency, and thereby referential clarity, in the collective body of translations. On the other hand, in some cases solutions that are less than optimal have also become translation norms, passed from translator to translator over the years. This article examines selected suboptimal translation solutions (not only lexical, but also morphological, syntactic, and stylistic) that have become established as norms, and it seeks to identify factors that have contributed to their persistence in translation practice despite deviance from typical English usage. These factors include causes as mundane as false friends and source-language patterns, as well as more institutional causes such as politics, social pressures, teaching practice, and lexicographic resources. Key words: Slovenian, English, translation, norms, deviance

Norms employed in Slovene translations of Anglophone postcolonial novels between 1971 and 1981 Nina Grahek Križnar Works of Anglophone postcolonial literature were first translated into Slovene in the 1960s. Translations followed on the heels of the emergence of postcolonial literature in the nation states emerging in the wake of the end of the British Empire. Postcolonial texts are culturally and linguistically multi-layered. One of their prominent features is the representation of local vernaculars in the form of non-standard language embedded in the framework of standard English. The first Slovene translators of postcolonial novels were faced with the problem of how to render linguistic cultural heterogeneity into Slovene. Drawing on the Slovene translations of six postcolonial novels published between 1971 – the year of the publication of the translation of Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea – and 1981 – the year of the publication of the translation of Alvin Bennett’s God the Stonebreaker – the article proposes that in the decade translators made use of different strategies for rendering non-standard features into target language. This indicates the existence of multiple translational norms within the given time frame:

Kako gledamo na normo danes, v postnormativnem obdobju? V neoliberalnem okolju pragmatičnih oziroma neliterarnih prevodov postaja standard, ki je točno določen in ki ga agencije aplicirajo kot standard ISO. V tem standardu je predvidena tako vhodna kontrola v obliki ustrezne prevajalske izobrazbe kot izhodna v obliki ustrezno usposobljenih prevajalcev-korektorjev.
