T

he year 2011 marked the 20th Anniversary of RENNER Ministries in the former Soviet Union. After hearing the call of God to move to the USSR, Rick and Denise Renner rented their first home in the region in 1991 and began the arduous process of moving their family of five from “the home of the free and the brave” into what was then the atheistic, communist territory of the USSR. Fully assured that God was beckoning them to take this giant step of faith, the Renners announced they were relocating to the USSR for one year to help teach Bible school students in what was at that time the first above-ground Bible school in the Soviet Union. Upon renting their first house, Rick and Denise began transporting their belongings to their new 2 RENNER Ministries Update

home in Latvia, a nation that was inducted into the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) at the end of World War II. When the Renners arrived, this small republic was still commonly referred to by nationals as Latviaskaya, the Russified name it had been ascribed when it was officially inducted by Joseph Stalin into the USSR at the end of the war. When the Renners made this huge move in 1991, they thought it was a commitment for one year to help the newly emerging Church that was struggling to step out of the shadows of communism. But what began as a oneyear commitment has turned into a sustained adventure of faith! Rick and Denise are founders of three churches (Riga Good News Church, Moscow Good News Church, and Kiev Good

News Church). Today Rick and Denise are Senior Pastors of the Moscow church with Paul Renner as Executive Associate Pastor, Philip Renner as Youth Pastor, and Joel Renner as Co-Director of Media Mir, the television ministry that broadcasts the Gospel across all nine times zones of the former USSR (see more details about the Moscow church, the television ministry, and other outreaches in the pages that follow). In little more than 20 years, the ministry has grown larger than the Renners could have ever dreamed or imagined. The Renner family has also grown — and over the years, it has become a fully integrated American-Russian family. With their sixth grandchild born in March 2012, Rick and Denise and their family have grown from 5 to 14 members!

• In 2003, Paul Renner married Polina Yrievna Sveshnikova. They have four children, all of whom are American-Russian citizens: William Richard Pavlovich Renner, Anastasia Elizabeth Pavlovna Renner, Cohen David Pavlovich Renner, and Abigail April Pavlovna Renner. • In 2008, Philip Renner married Ellina (Ella) Alekseevna Goncharova. They have one daughter, also an American-Russian citizen: Emilia Daniella Philipovna Renner. • In 2010, Joel Renner married Olga (Olya) Vladimirovna Smolyanitskaya. They have one son, Daniel Ryan Joel Renner. What Rick and Denise thought would be a shortterm, one-year commitment has become a lifelong adventure and an ever-deepening relationship with the Russian-speaking world.

Ministries and Outreaches

Moscow

Ministries and Outreaches

R

ENNER Ministries, in cooperation with the Moscow Good News Church, conducts many Making a Difference outreaches in the city of Moscow and beyond. Among these are special ministry outreaches to prisons, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, orphanages, children’s camps, the homeless, the elderly, as well as many other ongoing projects that are supported by partners of RENNER Ministries.

In 2011 Denise Renner — who directs this part of the ministry — reported that teams of MGNC people regularly demonstrated God’s love to more than 10,000 children and adults through the following services, outreaches, and events, numbering more than 300 throughout the year: • Conducted a Christmas program for 10 different orphanages. We gave 1,200 gifts to the children, including sweets, winter mittens, and soft toys. In addition, we gave 500 Bibles to the children, as well as gifts to bless and inspire the workers. • Took part in a camp for orphans, where 80 orphans from 3 orphanages attended. We conducted a special daily program for teenage girls, during which we gave them small mirrors, combs, hairpins, headbands, hand creams, shower- and face-care sets, and notebooks. • From November 2010 to May 2011, we made 11 visits to 2 orphanages for “Just Between Girls” classes to teach teenage girls values, hygiene, etc. Each girl was presented with a personal-hygiene gift set, worksheets, a pen, and a prayer card. • Visited women’s drug-and-alcohol rehab hospitals. We ministered to more than 450 women during 9 visits and conducted a special Easter program for them as well. We gave 450 gifts to women that included chocolate, a New Testament, a prayer card, 4 RENNER Ministries Update

and a book by Denise. In addition, we gave gifts to the workers that included hand cream, chocolate, a book, and a prayer card. • Visited Moscow baby houses (housing abandoned children up to 4 years old) 6 times. We brought gifts that included cookies, fruits, diapers, toys, learning material, and teaching manuals and books for the teachers.

House of Mercy House of Mercy (an outreach to homeless young people that RENNER Ministries oversees): 1. Helped 2 HOM young people — former street kids — attend university by obtaining permission from the Dean for them to study for free. 2. Conducted a Christmas evangelistic program, ministering to more than 1,100 children and adults, and giving a gift to each person attending, at the following:

• • • • • • •

a social shelter a boarding school a state rehabilitation center a youth prison 2 orphanages 2 remedial boarding schools 4 state shelters

3. Ministered Bible lessons at children’s mental hospitals. We gave 300 gifts to the children that included yogurt, little cakes, oranges, and small containers of juice. We also gave gifts to the staff, paint for the walls and doors, 20 sets of cleaning agents, and 200 rolls of bathroom tissue. 4. Fed more than 4,000 homeless adults and young people on the streets of Moscow.

5. Conducted an Easter program for more than 1,100 children in “closed institutions” (places where special permission must be obtained to do this work, such as youth prisons, children’s mental hospitals, hospitals, etc.) — and for more than 400 adults from 4 state shelters. 6. Started 2 “home groups” at 2 state homeless shelters and are anticipating an attendance of up to 50 people at each group.

Vitamin Club 1. Ministered to 4,238 senior citizens monthly, rotating their attendance in 2 services every Monday (up to 600 elderly in attendance per service). 2. Gave seniors 5,500 packages of vitamins; 2,500 bottles of pain-relief lotions for joints; 5,000 sandwiches; 7,500 boxes of juice; and 7,700 little cakes (on special holidays). The senior citizens who come to a meeting every Monday — many of whom are former communists and atheists — are tough and determined. They come no matter what the weather may be, and they walk several blocks to and from the city’s metro service, often making more than one connection to reach their destination. Recently, we had 770 people at one of our Monday meetings! What a great privilege and joy it is to lead many of Moscow’s elderly to Christ through this “lastchance” ministry! Even the most basic necessities are often in scarce supply to the precious souls ministered to through these outreaches and ministries. But because of the faithful giving of our partners, God has enabled RENNER Ministries to meaningfully touch thousands of people’s lives with significant spiritual and natural help who otherwise would have been neglected.

A

t the Lord’s direction, Rick and Denise moved in August 2000 from Riga, Latvia, to Moscow, Russia’s capital city, to start the Moscow Good News Church. In a conference room at the Hotel Russia — right on the edge of Red Square — the first meeting commenced with 220 people in attendance, most of whom had been saved watching the TV program Good News With Rick Renner. In a short time, the congregation outgrew that location and moved to another venue — a move that would repeat itself again and again over the next decade. Today the 6 RENNER Ministries Update

Moscow Good News Church has approximately 3,500 participants with an average weekly attendance of 2,200 people. The church presently meets in an auditorium that seats 550 people, with ample room in the facility for the children’s ministry. Services are held on Sundays at 9:00, 11:00, 2:00, and 5:00 – and on April 14, 2012, a Saturday service was added at 11:00 a.m. Two additional services conducted for senior citizens are held on Mondays at 11:00 and 2:00. Since moving to this location, the church has settled into a temporary-permanent home until its own building is ready

for occupancy. Currently, regular church attendance is the highest in the history of the church. Presently there are approximately 1,600 official members of the church. In Russia, no one under the age of 18 is legally allowed to be a church member, so this must be taken into account when one considers the gap between attendance and actual church membership. Every Sunday the altar is full of people who respond to the invitation to: 1) come to Christ; 2) rededicate their lives to the Lord; 3) receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit; or 4) become a member of the church.

T

oday Moscow is one of the world’s fastest-growing and most expensive cities in the world. Monthly rent has escalated for the church and ministry. After seeking God’s will, a decision was made to purchase a piece of land on which to build a permanent church facility. However, after the architects’ final costs for new construction were presented, it was deemed too expensive to build a facility large enough to meet the needs of the church’s growing congregation, and the land was put up for sale. In the meantime, a vacated auditorium became available. The

facility had been completely gutted, but with renovation will be suitable to amply meet the needs of the Moscow Good News Church. The finished building will accommodate approximately 1,300 people in the main auditorium. To accommodate attendance, multiple services will still be required, but a “home” will permanently be provided for the Moscow Good News Church. In addition to the main auditorium where the adults will attend Sunday services, there will be significant classroom space to accommodate the children’s ministry — plus two additional services will continue to

be held on Mondays for our senior citizens. This gives us room to hold services for approximately 5,000 people each week. When completed, our new facility will be a victory not only for this congregation, but also for all the churches in Russia who are still standing in faith for the purchase or renovation of church facilities. We are eternally grateful for your gifts that have enabled us to come this far. Words can’t express our gratitude for your faithfulness to Jesus and your willingness to help us do what He has asked us to do. Thank you! RENNER Ministries Update 7

Churches and Conferences A

lthough the Renner family resides in Moscow, and the Russian-speaking world is the primary focus of their ministry, they regularly speak at churches and conferences that are conducted in various parts of the world. Since 1985, Rick and Denise have personally ministered in more than 2,600 different churches and in hundreds of seminars, conventions, and large, crusade-type meetings. God has entrusted them with the blessing of ministering the Word of God face-to-face to approximately 3,000,000 people since this ministry first began. The Renners’ ministry has taken them to: Albania, Austria, Australia, Belarus, Canada, Caribbean Islands (various), China, Denmark, England, Estonia, France, Germany, India, Israel, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Mexico, Moldova, New Zealand, Poland,

Russia, Singapore, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, and, of course, to the United States. The Renner family has ministered routinely in the 48 contiguous states since the ministry was first incorporated in 1985.

In 2011 Rick and Denise have endeavored to stay close to their church to oversee their current building program and the growth of their congregation. In their own Moscow pulpit, Rick and Denise Renner preached more than 170 times in multiple Sunday church services during the year. In addition to their pastoral preaching responsibilities, they also made ministry trips to Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Kazakhstan, as well as multiple trips to cities throughout Russia and Ukraine. God also enabled them

to minister in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, New Mexico, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas in the United States. In the last year alone, Rick and Denise ministered face-to-face to nearly 200,000 people who attended these meetings. We thank God for His grace that has supernaturally empowered, equipped, and sustained Rick and Denise to take the Good News around the world as God has led them. But none of this would be possible without the gifts and prayers of our precious partners. We are so thankful to our partners for every gift they’ve sown and for the churches, pastors, and individuals whose lives have been strengthened and changed because they chose to give to God’s work.

ince the Renner family resides permanently in Moscow, Russia, and oversees the ministry from that location, audio, video, and print media have become an essential means of ministering effectively to partners and those in other parts of the world whom God has connected to our ministry. These teaching materials have become primary instruments through which the Renners impart the insights the Holy Spirit has given to them in God’s Word. This distribution department of RENNER Ministries is called “Teach All Nations” (TAN) — a name derived from Christ’s Great Commission in Matthew 28:19. Teach All Nations distributes audio, video, and written materials to churches and bookstores around the world. The worldwide distribution of Rick and Denise Renner’s books exceeds 3,000,000 copies in multiple languages. This includes Rick’s best-selling books, Dressed To Kill and Sparkling Gems From the Greek.

In 2011 Rick’s newest book A Light in Darkness, Volume One was released after three years of writing and design preparation. This 560-page book about Christ’s message to the seven churches in Asia Minor 12 RENNER Ministries Update

(see Revelation 1-3) was the fulfillment of a 30-year dream of Rick Renner. Volume One in this threevolume series is approximately the size of a world atlas and is completely full color, filled with photos shot on location, plus photographs of classic artwork, artifacts, illustrations, maps, and much more. The volume also contains hundreds of endnotes and a comprehensive index. This beautiful book is a rarity in today’s Christian market and is a rich resource filled with insight and information for lovers of God’s Word and Early Church history. At present, Volume Two in this three-part series is being written, edited, and designed. Because this type of Christian “coffee-table” book doesn’t normally acquire the status of a bestseller, it was not known how Christian readers would respond to this book. We are thankful to report that this first volume of A Light in Darkness exceeded all expectations, and today it is being distributed nationally to a very broad-based audience. Since 2011, many of Rick’s books (and all three of Denise’s books) have been designed in electronic formats and released via Kindle, Nook, and iBook and as a PDF at our online store. In early 2012, Sparkling Gems From the Greek was also released in an eBook-format.

Renner Books In addition to books that have been sold, this ministry has given away hundreds of thousands of copies of the Renners’ books to TV viewers in the territory of the former USSR. Without the giving of our partners, it simply would have been impossible for Rick and Denise to do this, but through the gifts of our partners, RENNER Ministries has been able to print and mail millions of books and other written materials to spiritually famished hearts that are crying out to know Christ better. Thank you! You are making a huge difference in the world!

RENNER Ministries Update 13

Television

Television

S

ince 1992, the Renners have been broadcasting TV programs on their own television network — the first Christian network to ever be established in the former USSR. Even in the earliest years, it had 80 million potential viewers, and the evidence of their viewership was demonstrated every month as pieces of mail flooded into the ministry offices by the tens of thousands. When the Renners first began broadcasting Good News With Rick Renner in 1992, there were no other regularly broadcasted Christian TV programs in that part of the world. The initial response of the viewing audience was enormous. In fact, it was so huge that it took the Renners and their team completely off-guard. In a short amount of time, there was a mountain of mail waiting for answers — and the mail just kept coming in! But with God’s help and the gifts of partners who sowed to help us swing the sickle for this harvest, God enabled the Renners to 14 RENNER Ministries Update

assemble a team to minister to people via mail. Believing for every dollar needed to print books and stationery, purchase computers and postage, and pay staff members, the Renners watched as God miraculously provided what was needed to do the job. People were writing to a ministry for the first time, so quickly responding to their letters was very important. A door had swung open, and God was calling us to walk through it to help meet the needs of TV viewers across the entire former USSR. More than 20 years later, today the Media Mir TV ministry is flourishing with a staff of professionals — editors, cameramen, designers, interpreters, translators, partnercare members, and TV-time buyers. This committed staff works daily to produce high-quality programming for the Kingdom of God. Since 1992, not one day has passed without our broadcasts going out to the entire former Soviet Union. In fact, if all the broadcasts for which we are responsible were counted since we began broadcasting

in 1991, it amounts to more than 455,391 different time slots. This huge number of time slots indicates that Media Mir has broadcast the equivalent of 26 years of nonstop Christian programming over the airwaves of the former Soviet Union and to Russian speakers throughout the world! Although everyone has not been reached, we can confidently say that multiple millions have heard the truth of God’s Word through the outreach of this amazing television network over the past two decades.

In 2011 Our Media Mir TV network had a daily audience of 90 million potential viewers on 76 regional statewide TV stations. It broadcasted on 6 satellites that reached Russian-speaking audiences in North America, Europe, Eurasia, the Middle East, and parts of North Africa. Media

Mir continues to work diligently to bring the life-saving message of Jesus Christ to souls who sat in darkness for the more than 70 years that communism ruled this part of the world. In the last year, Media Mir also printed more than 47,000 books to send as gifts to TV viewers who wrote and requested them. In addition, we are now sending our books digitally in a PDF format so viewers can receive them instantly and we can save on both mailing and manpower costs. We also wrote thousands of letters each month to those who wrote in with questions, needs, and prayer requests. We say thank you to partners for every piece of TV equipment purchased, for every time slot that has been paid for, for every program that has been produced, for every book printed, for every stamp bought, and for every envelope that has reached the home of a desperate soul with answers. You are a hero for your consistent giving, and we want to thank you! RENNER Ministries Update 15

Good News Association of Pastors and Churches

s early as 1995, pastors from all over the former USSR were asking Rick Renner to start an association for pastors — and after praying for two years, Rick and Denise felt led to initiate this outreach to pastors and their wives. By 1997, the TV ministry had grown so enormously that the program Good News With Rick Renner was already on TV in almost every part of the former USSR. Pastors knew Rick for his teaching — and they looked to him as a teacher, as a mentor, and often as the one who first taught them the Word of God. In the fall of 1997, Rick and Denise Renner launched the Good News Association of Pastors and Churches, a group of pastors that fellowshipped together on a regular basis with no legal bonds, but who looked to Rick and Denise as spiritual mentors. However, as time passed and the legal requirements of the government concerning churches grew more serious and legal registration became necessary, the Renners felt it was time to make the Pastors’ Association a legal entity with churches legally registered under its covering. Since 1997, the Pastors’ Association has had up to 800 participant 16 RENNER Ministries Update

churches. Through the years, more than 90 conferences and seminars have been conducted in multiple cities in Ukraine, Russia, and Latvia. The accumulative number of pastors and ministers who have attended Association training sessions over the years is more than 9,000. In addition to these conferences and seminars, staff members have made approximately 700 in-home visits to Association pastors across the vast region of the former USSR to provide pastoral care for them and their families. Because the cost of travel has become so high, we are presently developing a system to hold some Association meeting as webinars. In addition, meetings with groups of pastors are being planned via Skype and other Internet vehicles. Research is currently underway to determine the costs involved in broadcasting “live” via the Internet to large online audiences. In 2011, Association meetings were conducted in Moscow, Russia; Voronezh, Russia; Chelyabinsk, Russia; Sakhalin Island, Russia; Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine; and Sumy, Ukraine. The themes of those meetings were The Vision-Driven Minister and Effective Pastoral Counseling.

Renner has aggressively taken on this project by writing regularly on his English Facebook page. Our social-media presence in Russia has grown so quickly that a full-time employee was hired to communicate with those who respond on a regular basis. This employee, who is also a professional counselor, has helped

us turn our social-media networks into a very involved and compassionate partner-care program to Russianspeaking people. In addition to writing regularly for his Facebook audience, Rick has also begun to record and post 2- to 4-minute video clips on various subjects. On English Facebook, there

are approximately 700 daily video views of these clips — and on Russian Facebook, these video clips have approximately 400 daily viewers. These investments of 2 to 4 minutes have put our ministry in touch with an entirely new segment of people who were previously unconnected with us. The ministry is now using Facebook and Twitter for English speakers and for Russian speakers, as well as two other Russian social networks called Vkontacte and Odnoklassniki. This past year has marked a strong beginning in the process of building an effective and far-reaching social network base.

In 2011 The combined number of names on these various networks has grown to more than 35,000 people. Rick RENNER Ministries Update 17

n January 2003 — shortly after the Moscow Good News Church was established — Rick and Denise Renner also began the Good News Seminary to train believers to fulfill their God-given callings with excellence. Eighty-one students enrolled in the seminary that first year. As the vision expanded, students began to come from all over the former Soviet Union and beyond to train and become equipped to pioneer new works; to be sent to the nations of the world as missionaries; and to serve more effectively in their local church congregations. Seminary leaders established a connection with a university in the United States and obtained curricula enabling the seminary to offer Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees.

In 2011 As of May 2011, more than 600 men and women of all ages and stations in life have graduated from the Good News Seminary in Moscow. Today, many have become home-group leaders or serve in some capacity in the Moscow Good News Church, and several are members of the MGNC pastoral staff. Several even serve as instructors at the seminary, while many more have returned to their own home churches and are integrally involved in leadership in those churches, in other ministry organizations, and in various social programs. Many are missionaries, predominantly reaching the 18 RENNER Ministries Update

12 countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) — including Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Georgia. And several have pioneered churches or assumed pastorates in the CIS and beyond. Recently, an even broader vision was born, and the Good News Seminary was renamed the Good News Training Center. GNTC will continue to train students in all facets of ministry but will place even greater emphasis on missionary and pastoral ministries. We are committed to providing Bible education and sound practical teaching, with our strongest desire and thrust leaning toward church planting and missions, both home and international. As of the fall semester in 2011, 141 students are in training at the Good News Training Center, nearly all of whom regularly participate in short-term mission activities — and several already have clear direction for pioneering churches immediately upon their graduation. The Good News Training Center is a crucial part of the vision God gave the Renners years ago to “teach all nations,” strengthen the Church, and rescue those in need of God’s healing and delivering touch.

Conclusion

n the midst of these uncertain times, God is calling this ministry to extend its light further — and the Renners are prayerfully counting on Him to direct them and their team every step of the way. Rick emphasized: ”We’re so thankful for the faithful partners and friends of this ministry who continue to stand with us to fulfill this far-reaching mandate God has given us. We give Him all the glory for everything that has been accomplished so far, and we’re relying on Him to help us maintain that forward momentum as we begin another year of pursuing God’s call and fulfilling what He’s asked us to do with all our hearts.”
