Early Dismissal (1:15 pm)

We are past the halfway point in our school year, but the spring and summer months still feel miles away. The dreary landscape and chill in the air remind us that we will have to wait for sunshine, warmth, and new life to bloom (6 more weeks according to Punxsutawney Phil). Well, this feels like a good time to talk about patience.

CHAPEL

During the 2016-17 school year, our weekly chapel services will take place on Wednesdays at 8:30 a.m. in the church sanctuary. Parents and families are welcome to join us!

WORSHIP

We invite all school members to join us at worship on Sundays at Zion Lutheran Church. We offer a traditional service at 8 am, Sunday School at 9:30 am and contemporary worship at 10:45 am.

Ephesians 4:2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.

I looked up the definition for our character focus this month and found this, “the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset”. I laugh at the use of the word “delay”, which implies a short wait, but more often it seems some things are long overdue. I also like that this definition gives me the option of either accepting or simply tolerating challenges, and I can still call it patience...as long as I don’t get angry or upset. Though, that’s not as easy as it sounds. I struggle to tolerate (and I definitely struggle to accept) things that are out of my control, and these circumstances always seem to come at the worst time. Paul tells us in Colossians to be “strengthened with all power according to [God’s] glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience”. Because God is in control, we can be patient. Because God loves us, we can relax. Because God’s wisdom and timing are flawless, we can wait. Yes, God can actually give us the power to be patient. I also believe he can not only help us to endure, but he can also make us hopeful enough to worship while we are waiting and be grateful for the waiting. Reinhold Neibuhr, American theologian, authored a prayer that you have probably heard before, nicknamed “The Serenity Prayer” - a perfect prayer in our waiting. “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” Did you know that there’s actually a second part to this common prayer? “Living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time, accepting hardship as a pathway to peace. Taking, as Jesus did, this sinful world as it is - not as I would have it - trusting that You will make all things right if I surrender to Your will so that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with You forever in the next.” May God strengthen our patience and grant us serenity in our seasons of waiting, and may He make us hopeful for the blessings yet to come.
