December 11 Zion Lutheran Church Sunday School Christmas Program
Humility - December Character Trait Micah 6:8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? During the magical month of December, amidst the shopping, decorating, and baking, we will undoubtedly spend some time thinking (and maybe even singing) about the humble circumstances surrounding God the Creator becoming man. You know the picture: a small, unsanitary stable for a nursery, a feeding trough for a bassinet, nearby shepherds as visitors all surrounding a tiny, helpless baby...the King of Heaven and earth. Thinking about His humble beginning might serve as a reminder to us that He asks the same humility of us. Matthew 18:3-43 says, “And he said: ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven,” and Micah 6:8, “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Humbling ourselves is how we receive and encounter Christ. Obtaining this Christ-like character trait may seem simple. I just have to feel bad about my sins and start thinking less of myself, right? But often in our quest for humility, we stumble over pesky pride. C.S. Lewis comments, “If we find that our religious life is making us feel that we are good—above all, that we are better than someone else—I think we may be sure that we are being acted on, not by God, but by the Devil.” He also corrects my earlier estimation of obtaining humility with these words, “Christian humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.” So, if focusing on humility will only end up destroying it, what are we to do? We daily fix our eyes on Jesus, or as Matthew 11:29 says, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” God sent His son that night with the final objective of sacrifice so that we would be saved. He did this because of His love for us. But another part of His plan was to give Jesus time on earth as a man so that we would ultimately have an example to follow. The more we meditate on that sacrifice and example, the better the chance for Christ’s humility to grow in us, and the more it grows among us, the brighter we will shine for Him leading others to him just as the shepherds followed the star that Christmas night. May this month be a humble beginning for all of us. I pray that your Christmas is blessed.
