When I was asked to give a songwriting workshop at the Freeland Library, I had no idea that it would evolve into the creation of a new CD, which you are probably listening to right now and hopefully enjoying, right? I mean, what a cool idea, to get a bunch of strangers in the same room and share in the creative process of writing a song. I still get a chill knowing that in the time frame of 1 to 2 hours, we decided on a style, came up with a bunch of lyrics, and somehow put them all together to make sense. Almost blows my mind. We called the song “Mirrors”. :: Afterwards, I took the inspiration home and recorded every instrument by myself, one at a time, in a studio the size of a big shoebox. Listening to it, I was amazed. So I thought, why stop with one song? Why not just keep going and see what happens? So I did. Eventually I ended up giving my workshop to 8 different libraries within King, Snohomish and Island Counties in the state of Washington. Each group I worked with was unique. I remember one group of about 25 from Carnation, a mix of 4th graders and elderly folk that were so fun and inspiring to work with. We decided that the song we were writing should be a little bit country, a little bit funky and about chickens. Guess which song that was? Another group that I worked with, from Covington, actually made me feel good about being a human. We all connected with a passion for out planet and couldn’t have put that feeling more perfectly into words. Listen to the song “Make a Difference” and tell me that the lyrics don’t make you think about what’s happening right now. :: As part of what I do, I teach private music lessons at a super cool music store called Joe’s Island Music in Langley, WA. It just seemed natural that I should start writing songs with some of my students and include them as part of this CD. One of my favorites was with my student, Jake, on the song “Rockin’ Horse”. We started with a little riff on the guitar, worked on the lyrics, and the song just magically came together. But that wasn’t the case for every song. I found that there was usually a hurdle that would present itself at some point either in the writing or the recording process. As with any experiment, there is a great unknown. In my opinion, this unknown is where magic happens. One minute a song isn’t that good, just lacking something, and then magic happens and it turns into the best song ever! When I was giving a workshop in Kenmore, working on the song “Dragon”, everyone seemed to be self-conscious about adding to the song. So I basically just went around the room and asked everyone for one word that I could use, and people seemed to be okay with that. I ended up using the words as inspiration to the story of the song. I used the sound of construction in the song because all the librarians were in great anticipation of the new library that was going to be built. :: At some point I started inviting people into my recording studio to show them how I record music. With an idea, a few microphones, some instruments and a computer, you can really do a lot. I had a blast with Aden and Luca, two brothers ages 9 and 10. I invited them over to my studio for a BBC interview and together we wrote the song “Shout It Out”. I worked with Bryce and Quinn on the song “Blackheart”, where they used their fists and pounded the sound of a heartbeat on their chests. I also taught them Rock Star Image 101. They look wickedly cool in sunglasses. James Hinkley, the best cellist ever, came over and laid down a wailing violin track on the song “Bones”, a song I wrote with my student Tommy. Jasper came over and laid down some guitar on the song we wrote together called “Stone”. You see how interesting my life is, a new experience with every new song! :: My philosophy behind this album is this… you should share your knowledge because through sharing we can learn and grow as individuals. When I was putting together my first album, I didn’t have any money or any idea what could be possible in the recording studio. Fortunately, I had a very giving friend and mentor who allowed me the use of his time and equipment. He didn’t even charge me! Maybe this project is how I can pay him back, and maybe those who I have inspired will do the same down the road. Thank you everyone, this was such a fun project to work on. Keep on Rockin.

written at the Freeland, WA Sno-Isle Library What’s it gonna take To know you through and through Cause I been staring at the wall now I can’t see to you Couldn’t you just stand in one place And see reflections I see in you When everything else I’ve seen Seems to be fake Cause everywhere I look it’s a mirror And they’re all the same Do you ever get tired of putting a face to a name Face to a name Like a mirror with a hole in the middle Like Alice through a looking glass Who are you really girl Do I even want to ask What am I really after What is it I’m looking for When will I get beyond this When will I push past How could I let this go When all I do is think of you My heart my body my soul Are awake but when will I know

Rockin’ Horse

Maze

I Owe It All To You

Sitting on a rockin’ horse Riding on my last dime Allergic to happiness Who killed Leonard Bernstein

I’m part of this planet Walking through the trees Wondering what is the purpose for me

I woke up late I’m 15 minutes behind Everything’s the same I think I’m losing my mind An unconditioned love was all that we could be But the thought of losing you is slowly killing me

written with Jake Lindsay

Got a thousand million vision Cause I ate a carrot last night Wishin’ I had a fishing pole So I could take a marlin in a fight I don’t want no television I don’t want no big decisions I just want to go on wishin’ That I have a thousand women Give myself a ride for free Live my life within a dream If you want you can come with me Sitting on the saddle of a little horsy It’s quiet here on the back of this little horsy And it sure would be nice if you were to come with me We could split the cost right down the middle 60/50 We’ll take our time To just unwind Smell the flowers go by On the back of this little horsy

written at the Federal Way, WA King County Library

Sometimes I don’t understand it But I have a curiosity I must indulge the myself in me I got the whole world to explore I can sing and have a wonderful time One day of my life I will turn into a butterfly A Who Yah, Who Yah There’s only one thing to do In a maze never fear that is a ah ah ah in mind I often try to find it But it’s something I can’t see I wonder what is the purpose for me I hope I find an answer Or at least the things I need I must indulge the myself in me I got the whole world to explore I can sing and have a wonderful time One day of my life I will turn into a butterfly A Who Yah, Who Yah There’s only one thing to do In a maze never fear that is a ah ah ah in mind

written at the Sultan, WA Sno-Isle Library

Why do I feel this way about love gone astray I wish that you were here right now to hear what I have to say Why did you walk there are still things that I need How can you just watch me while my heart bleeds I thought you’d be the one to carry me away To take me from my darkness and show me the right way Something so small somehow grew Now all the love and faith I have I owe it all to you I owe it all to you Memories of our yesterday still etched upon my mind I want to be there again but I’m scared of what I’ll find I read a lot of books because they tickle my mind I have a loss of words whenever you walk by

Bones

Shout It Out

Believe

Walkin’ down a desert road Kick me along a little stone Push my face on the hard concrete When it’s time for me to sleep I’ve got nothing and nowhere to go Walkin’ down this desert road

I like to play the guitar I want to drive a car I stand up on the hood and belt it out When I sing my song I start to shout Shout it out

Within the walls of a crystal palace The mad hatter sits all alone Somewhere on the road to find his fame He fell into a trap and can’t remember his name

written with Tommy Morgen-Burke

Wish I had a cheep hotel With a long line of truckers and a bathroom smell Haven’t seen a pretty face in a while Wear something sexy and I’ll give you a smile I’ve got nothing and nowhere to go Walkin’ down this desert road Now I’ve got this feelin’ in my bones That I’ll find the answer down the road, down the road

written with Aden and Luca Fallows

I’ve heard most people need money to live But it gets a little ugly cause money can’t give I’ll give everything that I can give When I sing my song I start to shout Shout it out I will play my guitar to the end I will sing this song because I can I’ll stand up on the hood and belt it out When I sing my song I’ll start to shout Shout it out

written the at Bothell, WA King County Library

And so he’s left to wonder About the life he leads The monkey king summersaults through the sky Under the mountain is where I will wait for you For someday I will be free again To move my presence slowly westward And so I’m left to wonder About the life I lead And so I must follow I must follow To what I believe

Someone said there is a place Where answers come before the question is raised Moments later you find yourself And that will be the end of a constant hell I’ve got nothin’ and a long way left to go Walkin’ down this desert road

Blackheart

written with Quinn Hassrick and Bryce Auburn First of all lets get this off I cut my hair with scissors I’m going my own way soon Through a snowstorm in June No food, water or shelter A worn leather vest With a patch on the heart So you can’t see my blackheart I have a blackheart… I’m half way there to telling you Been eating mashed potatoes They’ve put me back right to the start But I’ll never give up I found a hidden telephone And painted it with yellow But now it’s time for me to run My guitar is all I know I have a blackheart… My heart is black but no one knows And soon I’ll be much older Tomorrow I’ll know which way to go I’ll show you how I know I have a blackheart…

Now I’ve got this feelin’ in my bones Lookin’ for somethin’ I just don’t know Give me some information Give me some inspiration Show me the way out of my cell Give me a ticket so I can go home

Make A Difference

Best Day Of My Life

The Dragon

Working all week a day at a time If I stop for a minute I get left behind You can ever get anything for free Wonder why this ever happened to me

As time comes and goes It’s a time nobody knows Just before the running of the bulls

Wind always blows the door shut Slams it in my face Well I don’t care I wont let it get me down Dancing around the room Without a care in the world When I look at you and can’t help but smile

I read a lot of books to enlighten my soul But nothing is coming so I don’t really know I’m philosophical if anything But all I really want to be is serene

written with Oliver Rock

I said oh I’ll be home soon Won’t be long before I’m through I said oh I’ll be alright When I get home to you tonight Wake up late wipe the sleep from my eyes When I get to work I feel like I could die Gimme a chance to get out of my head Won’t you just let me go back to bed I’d rather be in my dreams I’d rather feel the way you feel Working all week a day at a time If I stop for a minute I get left behind You can ever get anything for free Wonder why this ever happened to me

written at the Covington, WA King County Library

The sun is lost behind the snow A covered landscape falls and my toes Are brushing cool reflecting water The world is a beautiful place So please take care and don’t you waste now Wouldn’t it be nice to be around a little longer With all the colors in the sky Getting more beautiful all the time I’ll remember you in my heart now Your so nice to me I hope That we become good friends Put aside your grief I know we can make a difference Take all you can and you’ll see There is an end when you use everything My heart is beating like a melody In my head a memory Just before the running of the bulls Let all love come together When we sit to dinner on the ground

I’m sorry I was going to make you leave After I tried so hard to get you Sometimes I watch the birds as they sing It’s all that helps me get through I try to find the balance in many things Hope we can build a bridge to meet you I drink clean water on a clear blue night Whatever I can do to feel new Feels like a dragon has latched on to me…

The Chicken Song

written at the Carnation, WA King County Library There was an old lady who loved her chickens She liked them pretty ones with red, red feathers Especially red feathers And the chickens had the softest cutest chicks imaginable Some were orange and purple, and some wanted to be rock stars Those rock star chickens became famous Their music went world wide They called their band the chicks Then you found out that the chickens died The chickens died I don’t really know why they did They just did

Them chickens became famous Their music went world wide They called their band the chicks And then they died And at the funeral we sang a sad sad song And couldn’t believe our eyes when they sang along The chicks came back to life Back to life… I love chicken Baby! “I recorded the group singing and used them in the outro of the song.” - LB
