Welcome Message Messaġġ tad-Dħul

Hon. Owen Bonnici MP

Minister of Justice, Culture & Local Government

Only a few festivals manage to steadily grow from strength to strength both locally and internationally. ŻiguŻajg is undoubtedly one of them, now in its sixth year. This year’s annual event will be held between the 11th and the 20th of November and will be showcasing no less than 24 projects, featuring new Maltese productions as well as others produced by internationally renowned artists to great critical acclaim.

4

Ftit huma l-festivals li jirnexxilhom jibqgħu jikbru minn suċċess għall-ieħor kemm lokalment kif ukoll internazzjonalment. Bla dubju, ŻiguŻajg huwa wieħed minnhom, issa li wasal fis-sitt sena tiegħu. Din is-sena, dan l-avveniment annwali se jittella’ bejn il-11 u l-20 ta’ Novembru u se jkun qiegħed jesponi 24 proġett, uħud minnhom produzzjonijiet ġodda lokali kif ukoll oħrajn mtellgħa minn artisti rinomati internazzjonalment u li ġew apprezzati ħafna mill-kritiċi.

Around 25,000 persons, most of whom are children and young people are expected to visit this year’s events, rendering the festival one of the largest of its kind, and one which is eagerly awaited for by parents, teachers, carers and, most of all, children and young people.

Madwar 25,000 ruħ, il-maġġoranza tagħhom tfal u żgħażagħ, mistennija jżuru l-wirjiet ta’ din is-sena. B’hekk, il-festival se jkun wieħed mill-akbar tax-xorta tiegħu, mistenni ferm mill-ġenituri, l-għalliema, il-carers u, l-aktar, mit-tfal u ż-żgħażagħ.

ŻiguŻajg Festival continues to be on the forefront in fostering new generations of young artists while nurturing new audiences with projects of high artistic excellence. A dream which has become possible through the allocation of public funds and the Festival team professional efforts, headed by the programme manager, Mr Daniel Azzopardi, as well as all the collaborators involved.

ŻiguŻajg jibqa’ fuq quddiem nett fittrawwim ta’ ġenerazzjonijiet ġodda ta’ artisti żgħar filwaqt li joħloq udjenzi ġodda permezz ta’ proġetti ta’ kwalità artistika għolja. Din hija ħolma li saret realtà bl-allokazzjoni ta’ fondi pubbliċi kif ukoll bl-isforzi professjonali tat-tim responsabbli mill-festival, immexxi mill-maniġer talprogramm, is-Sur Daniel Azzopardi, kif ukoll il-kollaboraturi kollha involuti.

Note from the

Programme Manager Nota mill-Maniġer tal-Programm Daniel Azzopardi

Programme Manager

ŻiguŻajg is back for the sixth year running!

ŻiguŻajg reġa’ magħna għas-sitt sena konsekuttiva!

For the first time the Festival programme will be spread over a span of ten days with a variety of creative forms which should go down well with our audiences.

Għall-ewwel darba l-Festival ser ikun mifrux fuq mgħedda t’għaxart ijiem bi programm miżgħud b’forom differenti t’arti li għandhom jinżlu tajjeb mal-udjenzi tagħna.

The 2016 edition will be commemorating leading figures who left a heritage of artistic works for children and young people. Maltese and international artists will be presenting projects of high artistic excellence which take inspiration from, amongst others, major works by Dahl, Prokofiev and Shakespeare while writings by Anton Manwel Caruana, Trevor Zahra and Anastasio Cuschieri will receive a contemporary readaptation. Maltese folktales and traditions will be presented in a creative and innovative manner which abandons any preconceived notions.

Din l-edizzjoni ser tkun qiegħda tikkomemora numru ta’ anniversarji ta’ personaġġi li b’xi mod jew ieħor ħallew patrimonju ta’ xogħol kreattiv għat-tfal u ż-żgħażagħ. Artisti Maltin kif ukoll barranin ser ikunu qed jippreżentaw xogħol t’eċċellenza li jieħu ispirazzjoni minn, fost l-oħrajn, opri ta’ Dahl, Prokofiev u Shakespeare filwaqt li kitbiet ta’ Anton Manwel Caruana, Trevor Zahra u Anastasio Cuschieri ser ikunu qed jiġu readattati fi sfond kontemporanju. Tradizzjonijiet u ħrejjef Maltin ser ikunu qed jiġu ppreżentati b’mod innovattiv u kreattiv lil’hinn minn perċezzjonijiet użwali.

While the Festival remains a reference for Maltese artists to devise new quality work, the programme retains its appeal for the best international companies to present their repertoire. Overall, the 2016 edition will have over 150 creatives from seven different countries who will be contributing in some way or another to make this year’s edition one to remember.

Filwaqt li l-Festival jibqa’ dejjem ta’ referenza għall-artisti Maltin biex itellgħu xogħol ġdid u ta’ kwalita’, il-programm jibqa’ wkoll pjattaforma intriganti għall-aqwa kumpaniji internazzjonali biex jippreżentaw ir-repertorju tagħhom. B’kollox għandna ‘il fuq minn 150 artisti minn seba’ pajjiżi differenti li b’xi mod jew ieħor ser ikunu qed jikkontribwixxu sabiex din l-edizzjoni tkun waħda memorabbli.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Fondazzjoni Kreattività team and all those who contributed to the production of ŻiguŻajg 2016. Much obliged!

Minn hawnhekk nirringrazzja lit-tim ta’ Fondazjoni Kreattivita’ u lil dawk kollha li taw sehemhom sabiex jittella’ ŻiguŻajg 2016. Grazzi mill-qalb! 5

SILLU has come all the way from the land of giants, to visit our tiny island, as none of his giant friends seem to play with him anymore. The giant toy horse will be wandering the streets of Valletta during ŻiguŻajg, as he knows he will meet many children and youths to play with. Sillu will be accompanied by his trusted friend, the accordionist, to cheer him on, as they greet the people and celebrate his arrival to the festival. NO BOOKING IS REQUIRED FOR THIS EVENT

SILLU ġie mill-bogħod, mill-pajjiż tal-ġganti, biex iżur il-gżira ċkejkna tagħna, għax donnu ħadd minn sħabu l-ġganti ma għadu jilgħab aktar miegħu. Iż-żiemel tal-logħob ġgantesk se jkun qed idur mat-toroq tal-Belt Valletta matul ŻiguŻajg għax jaf li se jiltaqa’ ma’ ħafna tfal u żgħażagħ biex jilgħab magħhom. Sillu se jkollu miegħu lill-ħabib fdat tiegħu, li jdoqq il-kunċertina, biex jagħmillu l-qalb, huma u jagħtu merħba lin-nies u jiċċelebraw il-wasla tiegħu għall-festival. M’HEMMX BŻONN TIBBUKKJA GĦAL DAN L-AVVENIMENT

Hogwallops Thrillingly spectacular circus skills blend seamlessly with charm, physical comedy, clowning, juggling, theatrical storytelling and slapstick in this colourful, loud and funny dramatisation of the domestic adventures of a chaotic, dysfunctional family of misfits. Inspired by Roahl Dahl’s The Twits and Ettora Scola’s film Bruti, Sporchi e Cattivi (Ugly, Dirty and Bad), The Hogwallops is a treat for the eyes and ears. The hilarious family’s antics create a crazy home that resembles an adventure playground where riotous, anarchic fun prevails. Everyday activities become triggers for mayhem, simple tasks like hanging out the washing become a tangle of swinging, flying bodies and fabric. Dinner-time becomes a teasing game of animalistic juggling and baking takes on dangerous proportions that would appal Mary Berry as the household furniture is precariously stacked and balanced on the roof. UK based contemporary circus company Lost in Translation combine their warm humour with heart-stoppingly virtuosic skilful aerial and floor acrobatics (watch out for the high flying, daredevil zimmer frame aerobics as well as some beautiful arial ballet). A specially composed live score contributes to the mix creating a quirky and comic family show in the true sense - with thrills, gasps, laughs and drama there’s plenty for both adults and children to enjoy. 10

Ħiliet taċ-ċirku eċċitanti u spettakolari jitħalltu b’mod naturali ma’ seħer, kummiedja fiżika, buffunerija, bużullotti, rakkonti teatrali ta’ stejjer u arlekkinati f’din id-dramatizzazzjoni kkulurita, storbjuża u komika talavventuri domestiċi ta’ familja kaotika u xejn funzjonali ta’ nies li mhux posthom fis-soċjetà. Ispirata minn The Twits, ta’ Roahl Dahl u mill-film Brutti, Sporchi e Cattivi (Koroh, Maħmuġin u MillAgħar) ta’ Ettore Scola, f’The Hogwallops għandek xalata x’tara u x’tisma’. L-istramberiji ta’ din il-familja allegra joħolqu dar eċċentrika li aktar tixbah lil xi fiera tal-avventuri fejn tirrenja frattarija sħiħa. Attivitajiet normali ta’ kuljum jispiċċaw f’pandemonju sħiħ, u affarijiet sempliċi bħall-inxir tal-ħwejjeġ isiru taħbila ta’ iġsma u drappijiet li jitbandlu u jtiru. Ħin l-ikel isir logħba inkejjuża ta’ bużullotti animalistiċi, u t-tisjir jassumi proporzjonijiet perikolużi li jwerwru bil-biża’ saħansitra lil Mary Berry bl-għamara tad-dar miġbura f’munzell u bbilanċjata se taqa’ u ma taqax fuq il-bejt.

Sensacional. Attività li fiha t-tfal ikunu jistgħu jgawdu esperjenza awdjoviżiva.

It is a burst of images and sounds that spread everywhere. A stunning visual and sound experience. A soft white floor – everything is white, even the costumes the children wear during the show that they have put on before it are white! The floor is a large screen on which high-resolution images are projected. Children get carried away by these powerful images, the games they lead them to, the suggestive soundtrack.

Hija splużjoni ta’ xbihat u ħsejjes li jinfirxu ma’ kullimkien. Esperjenza awdjoviżiva tassew impressjonanti. L-art ratba u bajda – fil-fatt kollox hu abjad anki l-ħwejjeġ li t-tfal jilbsu matul il-wirja, u li jkunu libsu minn qabel, ikunu bojod! L-art tkun magħmula minn skrin kbir li fuqu kif ukoll fuq il-parteċipanti jiġu pproġettati xbihat b’riżoluzzjoni għolja u li jimlew l-ispazju kollu. It-tfal jinġarru minn dawn ix-xbihat qawwija, mil-logħob li jwassluhom għalihom, u mill-mużika suġġestiva.

‘PEUT-ÊTRE THEATRE REMINDS US THAT THERE IS MORE ON HEAVEN AND EARTH THAN IS IMAGINED. YOU JUST HAVE TO BELIEVE – OR BE CONVINCED BY EXPERT PRACTITIONERS OF THE MAGIC OF THEATRE.’ BRITISH THEATRE GUIDE

A delicate dance-theatre performance for children and their adults, playfully exploring sound and silence. Two characters set out on a journey through a world filled with Boings, Whooshes, Tick-Tocks and Cacophony! Their journey is punctuated by silence and, as they are wrapped up in stillness, they learn to listen to that silence. Peut-Être Theatre, led by Artistic Director Daphna Attias, brings a surreal poetic aesthetic to the world of children’s theatre. Driven by a desire to create unforgettable early theatrical experiences for young audiences, our shows effectively combine the visual, the physical and the musical. The research and development for the show were in collaboration with Great Ormond Street Hospital and the Institute of Acoustics and Vibrations at Southampton University. Il-Babaw MORE OR LESS THEATRE AGE 5+ FORM: PUPPETRY LANGUAGE: NON-VERBAL STUDIO B, ST JAMES CAVALIER 45 MINUTES PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE FRIDAY 11TH NOVEMBER 2016: 9:30, 16:30 SATURDAY 12TH NOVEMBER: 16:30 SUNDAY 13TH NOVEMBER: 16:30 TUESDAY 15TH NOVEMBER 2016: 9:30, 11:30, 16:30 WEDNESDAY 16TH NOVEMBER 2016: 11:00, 16:30 SATURDAY 19TH NOVEMBER 2016: 16:30 SUNDAY 20TH NOVEMBER 2016: 12:00, 16:30 ‘Il-Babaw’ is a creepy creature who has guarded the prickly pear portal – the entrance to the realm of the fairies – for many centuries. Building a reputation as a horrifying monster, the babaw spends his time skulking in the squalid alley that has arisen around the portal and terrifying anybody who dares to come too close.

20

‘Il-Babaw’ hu ħlejqa li tkexkex u li għal sekli sħaħ żamm għassa mal-bieb tal-bajtar tax-xewk – id-daħla li tagħti għad-dinja tal-fatati. B’fama bħala mostru tal-biża’, il-babaw iqatta’ l-ġurnata jħuf fl-isqaq maħmuġ jinten li nbena madwar il-bieb u jbeżża’ lil kull min jażżarda jersaq qrib iżżejjed.

His life takes a sudden twist one day when he meets Nina, a seven-year-old girl, who isn’t quite like the others. As he gets to know her, the creature learns that Nina, apart from having rather peculiar tastes and an infinitely inquisitive curiosity, needs help – and there seems to be nobody in her life who can offer it to her. This story of an unlikely friendship between a little girl and a scary monster combines fun, excitement and hilarity with heart-warming moments.

Jum fost l-oħrajn ħajtu tinbidel f’salt meta jiltaqa’ ma’ Nina, tifla ta’ seba’ snin li mhijiex propju bħal tfal oħrajn. Aktar ma jsir jafha, il-mostru jsir jaf li Nina, minbarra li għandha gosti naqra strambi u kurżità inkwiżittiva infinita, għandha bżonn l-għajnuna – u donnu m’hemm ħadd f’ħajjitha li jista’ joffrihielha. Din l-istorja dwar ħbiberija kemxejn improbabbli bejn tifla żgħira u mostru tal-biża’ tikkombina d-divertiment, l-eċċitament u l-allegrija, kif ukoll mumenti li jmissulek qalbek.

An innovative, fun and ever reliable theatre piece by More or Less Theatre, perfect for children, no matter what language they usually speak!

Biċċa xogħol teatrali innovattiva, divertenti u li ma tiddiżappuntak qatt minn More or Less Theatre, perfetta għat-tfal, hu x’inhu l-ilsien li s-soltu jitkellmu bih!

A children’s playground – a small world in the big city. With its own inhabitants, its own rules, its winners and losers, love and injustice, space and time. Things that are close can be terribly far, and a moment can last an eternity. Here, an awful lot can happen in just one day. Or also very little. But careful – few people know that the playground also has its secrets! Grawnd tal-logħob għat-tfal – dinja żgħira f’belt kbira. Bl-abitanti tiegħu, bir-regoli tiegħu, bir-rebbieħa u t-telliefa, l-imħabba u l-inġustizzja, l-ispazju u ż-żmien. Affarijiet qrib jistgħu jkunu bogħod ħafna, u mument wieħed jista’ jdum eternità sħiħa. Hawn, f’jum wieħed jistgħu jiġru ħafna affarijiet. U jista’ ma jiġri kważi xejn ukoll. This story is adapted from a Chinese ancient legend about an old monk and his three students. One day, in a small temple deep in the mountain, the monk asked his students whether they can still recall the reasons which led them to the temple. “Why?” they asked themselves. Why had they come all the way to the mountain? So they retraced their steps to the beginning, when they first had arrived. The first, a troublesome monk, recalled that time when he had tried to assist his master in bringing water to the temple. It was tough work, and the hardheaded student who tried to handle it all, ended up falling into the well! Fortunately, the master saved him and since that day, they worked together, chanted Buddhist scripture and grew in their faith towards a good life.

The second of the students, a fat and greedy monk, was also skilled in the art of Chinese Kung Fu. He too, recalled the time when he was faced with the difficult task of fetching water from the mountain. However, he was not alone - the first student was already there. They had to decide who of them should carry out the task. Ultimately, they decided to carry the water together - to share the load, and benefit from their work equally. Finally, the third student came along. He was thin and spent the entire day reading scriptures from an endless scroll. The three now had to decide who of them was to fetch and carry the water. None did. Thirsty, the three students started to grow distant from each other. Until one day, the oil lamp in the temple overturned and caused a big fire, and the three students had no other choice but to work together….

Din hi storja addattata minn leġġenda antika Ċiniża. Fuq muntanja ’l bogħod kien hemm tempju żgħir. F’dan it-tempju kienu jgħixu patri anzjan u tliet patrijiet żgħażagħ. Jum fost l-oħrajn, il-patri anzjan staqsa lill-istudenti tiegħu għadhomx jiftakru għalfejn kienu marru hemm. Il-mistoqsija fakkrithom f’dak li kienu ltaqgħu miegħu meta kienu għadhom kif waslu fuq il-muntanja. L-ewwel wieħed kien patri mqareb u fuq tiegħu. Li ġġorr l-ilma fuq il-muntanja mhux xi xogħol ħafif. Il-patri żagħżugħ kien għen lill-patri anzjan iġorr l-ilma imma ma damx ma waqa’ fil-bir. B’xorti tajba l-imgħallem tiegħu għenu jitla’ minn hemm. Wara dan, it-tnejn bdew iġorru l-ilma flimkien waqt li jkantaw siltiet mill-Iskrittura Buddista, jitgħallmu l-Buddiżmu flimkien, u jgħixu ħajja kuntenta.

It-tieni wieħed kien patri oħxon u żaqqiq. Dan kien tajjeb ħafna fil-Kung Fu Ċiniż. Allura, min minnhom it-tnejn kien se jġorr l-ilma? Wara ħafna, qatgħuha li jġorru l-ilma flimkien, kif ukoll jaħdmu flimkien u jixorbu flimkien ukoll! It-tielet wieħed kien patri rqiq, il-ġurnata kollha bliskroll tal-Iskrittura f’idejh. Issa, min minn dawn it-tliet patrijiet se jġorr l-ilma? Jekk ma jġorru ħadd, ma jkollhomx ilma x’jixorbu. Imma darba waħda, il-lampa taż-żejt fit-tempju nqalbet u qabbdet nar kbir – u tkun propju din il-ħaġa li jirnexxilha tgħaqqad lit-tliet patrijiet flimkien bejniethom.

Courgette is an intriguing nickname for a 9-year-old boy, although his unique story is surprisingly universal. After his mother’s sudden death, Courgette is befriended by a police officer, Raymond, who accompanies him to his new foster home filled with other orphans his age. At first the boy struggles to find his place in this strange, at times hostile, environment. Yet, with Raymond’s help and his new-found friends, Courgette eventually learns to trust, finds true love and, at last, a new family of his own. Courgette huwa laqam kurjuż għal tifel ta’ 9 snin, għalkemm il-ġrajja unika tiegħu tgħaġġbek kemm hija universali. Wara l-mewt għal għarrieda ta’ ommu, Courgette isir ħabib ma’ uffiċjal tal-pulizija, Raymond, li jakkumpanjah sad-dar addottiva ġdida tiegħu mimlija b’orfni oħra talistess età tiegħu. Għall-bidu t-tifel ibati ftit biex isib postu f’dan l-ambjent stramb, xi drabi wkoll ostili. Madankollu, bl-għajnuna ta’ Raymond u tal-ħbieb ġodda li jagħmel, Courgette eventwalment jitgħallem jafda, isir jaf x’jiġifieri mħabba vera u, fl-aħħar, isib ukoll familja ġdida għalih.

Friends, Romans, Countrymen, lend me your ears! I come to present Shakespeare like he hath never been seen before upon thine eyes in Malta! Shakeshorts presenteth unto you, a rendition of Shakespeare that hath been condensed in length and acted out in brevity, using wit, jest and silly hats: perfect for young minds full of mischief.

Ħbieb, Rumani, Ċittadini, agħtuni widen! Jiena ġejt nippreżentalkom lil Shakespeare b’mod li għadkom qatt ma rajtu bħalu quddiem għajnejkom f’Malta! Shakeshorts jippreżentalkom interpretazzjoni ta’ xogħol ta’ Shakespeare ikkondensat fit-tul u rreċtat filqosor, b’battuti spirtu pront, ċajt u kpiepel naqra boloh: perfett għal imħuħ żgħar mimlijin imqarbizza!

This most excellent show is written by Chris Dingli (with the help of one William Shakespeare) and is full of jollity, excitement and naughtiness. Thy kids will not sit passively by and watch some old fart drone on about the Big S. Nay! Children verily will be encouraged to participate and will experience the world of the play itself!

Din il-rappreżentazzjoni tassew eċċellenti miktuba minn Chris Dingli (bl-għajnuna ta’ ċertu William Shakespeare) hi mimlija allegrija, eċċitament u mqarbizza. Uliedkom mhux se jibqgħu passivi bilqiegħda jħarsu lejn wieħed naqra m’aħniex ilablab dwar il-Big S. Nay! It-tfal se jkunu mħeġġin jieħdu sehem u jesperjenzaw id-dinja deskritta fl-iskritt!

Written and performed in a humorous style that will allow Maltese children to enjoy the stories and identify with themes and characters whilst gaining confidence with the language, Shakeshorts is most certainly an excellent introduction to Shakespeare (and medieval insults, but that’s just a bonus).

Miktuba u rreċtata bi stil umoristiku li jagħmilha possibbli għal tfal Maltin li jieħdu gost bl-istejjer u jidentifikaw mat-temi u l-karattri, filwaqt li jakkwistaw ukoll kunfidenza fil-lingwa, Shakeshorts hija ċertament introduzzjoni eċċellenti għax-xogħlijiet ta’ Shakespeare (u xi insulti medjevali wkoll, imma dak huwa biss bonus).

First of all, to commemorate old songs, poems, comic sketches and rhymes, giving them new life on stage with modern adaptations and twists. Secondly, to invent new songs and writings, continuing the musical and literary voyage started by earlier generations. For the first time there will be a concert targeting the very young. The theme will be fairy tales and the characters that inhabit them. For this concert, these characters will be pulled out of the book pages to spend an hour with young children, to the songs by Daniel Cauchi and the music by the Big Band Brothers, together with quips by Ray Calleja and writings by Michael Spagnol. 36

Home explores the notion of identity. The everchanging shifts and dynamics that determine who we are provide a fluidly evolved construct that explores the cycle of life.

Home tesplora l-kunċett tal-identità. Iċ-ċaqliq u d-dinamiċi li l-ħin kollu jinbidlu u li jiddeterminaw min aħna jipprovdu kostrutt fluwidament evolut li jesplora ċ-ċiklu tal-ħajja.

In this new work, choreographed by Artistic Director Mavin Khoo, the ŻfinMalta Dance Ensemble dancers weave a cinematic narrative through the protagonist voice seen within the life journey of a single man. Accompanied by his ‘thoughts’ of previous existences, he follows the cyclic journey of life as he experiences birth, childhood, love, tragedy and death. The work asks us to reconsider the notion of home as a structural location of dwelling.

F’dan ix-xogħol ġdid, b’koreografija tad-direttur artistiku Mavin Khoo, iż-żeffiena ta’ ŻfinMalta Dance Ensemble jinsġu narrattiva ċinematika permezz ta’ leħen ewlieni skont kif tidher fil-vjaġġ tal-ħajja ta’ raġel waħdu. Akkumpanjat mill-‘ħsibijiet’ tal-eżistenza preċedenti tiegħu, huwa jimxi l-vjaġġ ċiċliku tal-ħajja waqt li jgħaddi mill-esperjenza tattwelid, it-tfulija, l-imħabba, it-traġedja u l-mewt. Iż-żifna titlobna nqisu mill-ġdid il-kunċett ta’ dar bħala post strutturali fejn wieħed jgħix.

It seems that the construction of identity through life’s constant navigation of social rules determines who we are. But why?

Jidher li l-kostruzzjoni tal-identità permezz tannavigazzjoni kostanti tal-ħajja qalb ir-regoli soċjali jiddetermina min aħna. Imma għaliex? 39

How many times have we lost something and forgotten all about it over time? However precious and important it was, it remained lost, seemingly for ever. But if we had the opportunity to discover the journey it had made over time and knew exactly what happened to it, then that would indeed be a story to tell!

Kemm-il darba tintilfilna xi ħaġa li tispiċċa ma tinstab qatt u li ħafna drabi tintesa maż-żmien? Tkun kemm tkun prezzjuża jew importanti, ladarba tintilef tkun intilfet. Imma li kieku kellna l-opportunità naraw il-vjaġġ tagħha tul is-snin u nkunu nafu eżatt x’sar minnha, kieku dik storja oħra.

Join the various characters who will be leading the audience on a time journey that will offer not only hints about the mystery of the diary but also insights into Maltese life during three particular periods. Three scenes, from 1916, 1966 and 2016, will help us discover details about the past, connect with the present, and trigger various questions about the future.Through interactions with the audience, as well as through contemporary narrational and theatrical methods, the performance will make those present, whether old or young, aware of the differences and the similarities between old and present times.

Ingħaqdu mad-diversi karattri li se jieħdu lill-udjenza fuq vjaġġ tul is-snin li mhux biss se jtina ħjilijiet dwar il-misterju tad-djarju imma wkoll ħjilijiet dwar il-ħajja Maltija f’dawn it-tliet anni. Se jiġu ppreżentati tliet kwadri mill-1916, l-1966 u l-2016 li permezz tagħhom se niskopru dettalji dwar il-passat li jgħinuna nagħmlu konnessjonijiet mal-preżent u jqanqlulna ħafna mistoqsijiet dwar il-futur. Permezz ta’ interazzjonijiet mal-udjenza u metodi narrattivi u teatrali kontemporanji, ir-rappreżentazzjoni se tgħarraf lill-udjenzi, kemm żgħar kif ukoll kbar, dwar id-differenzi u similaritajiet bejn ilbieraħ u llum.

42

Many years ago, all radio plays on Rediffusion were broadcast live. Each and every sound had to be produced there and then: from the tiniest door creak to the raging storm. Many a times storms actually did arise among the actors!

Żmien twil ilu, id-drama fuq ir-Rediffusion kienet issir kollha live. Kull ħoss kien irid isir dak ilħin stess: mill-iċken żaqżiqa ta’ bieb sal-ikbar maltempata. U fl-istudjow ġieli kienet tassew tqum maltempata bejn l-atturi!

A theatrical experience written by Trevor Zahra, and produced by the Drama Unit, exploring one aspect of the history of radioplay broadcasting in Malta. This play is linked to the book Remembering Rediffusion in Malta by Dr Toni Sant.

Esperjenza teatrali miktuba minn Trevor Zahra u maħduma mid-Drama Unit li tesplora aspett storiku fl-istorja tax-xandir tar-radjudrammi. Dan ix-xogħol huwa marbut mal-ktieb Remembering Rediffusion in Malta ta’ Dr Toni Sant.

Ineż għandha erbatax-il sena. Perf: popolari, sabiħa, fuq tagħha, ribelluża, qaddisa anġlu, itellagħlek elf like fuq Facebook. Perfetta. Speċi ta’.

Ineż disappeared.

Ineż nieqsa.

She disappeared suddenly on her way home on Saturday night and nobody knows her whereabouts, what happened to her – or what they’ve done to her. In such a tiny place like Malta, where it is practically impossible to get lost or to hide, truth will out, eventually, and what the Police aren’t able to discover is gradually emerging among the young people who knew her – and who did not in fact perceive her as Perf(ect). Those who can evade trials by jury for lack of evidence against them have to face another kind of jury: the jury by society that is ever ready to judge and point fingers. After all, what had driven Ineż to start behaving the way she did immediately before her disappearance? Indeed, Ineż may not have been perfect – but apparently everybody wanted her to be, somehow or other, the perfect model – without even giving her the chance to be truly what she wanted to be.

Sparixxiet ħabta u sabta hi u sejra d-dar is-Sibt filgħaxija u ħadd ma jaf fejn marret, xi ġralha – jew x’għamlulha. F’pajjiż daqs tikka bħal Malta, fejn huwa impossibbli li tintilef jew tistaħba, iż-żejt jibda tiela’ f’wiċċ l-ilma, u dak li ma jistgħux jiskopru l-Pulizija qiegħed joħroġ bil-mod il-mod fost iż-żgħażagħ li lil Ineż kienu jafuha – u li Perf(etta) ma tantx kienu jarawha. Dawk li jiffrankaw il-ġuri tal-qrati għax m’hemmx provi kontrihom għandhom ġuri ieħor x’jiffaċċjaw: dak ta’ soċjetà dejjem lesta tiġġudika u tipponta subgħajha. U fuq kollox, din Ineż x’wassalha biex tibda ġġib ruħha kif bosta innutawha ftit qabel ma sparixxiet? Għax forsi Ineż perfetta ma kenitx – imma donnu kulħadd riedha tkun, b’xi mod jew ieħor, l-ideal tiegħu – mingħajr ma ta nifs lil din it-tfajla biex tkun dak li verament trid hi.

Ineż kienet Perf(etta) is a play for young people written by Simone Spiteri and produced by Studio 18 (the #babydaddy team), loosely based on and inspired by Anton Manwel Caruana’ novel, Ineż Farruġ. Set against a contemporary background of Maltese young people, the story tries to comprehend who indeed is Ineż 2016 and whether she is still voiceless like her Caruana counterpart in 1421. Although a twenty-first century young lady may be more emancipated, the pressure that society puts on her to make her attain the unreachable ideals of all those around her is still formidable. *THIS PRODUCTION CONTAINS STRONG LANGUAGE THAT IS NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF THIRTEEN

Ineż kienet Perf(etta) huwa dramm għaż-żgħażagħ miktub minn Simone Spiteri u mtella’ minn Studio 18 (it-tim ta’ #babydaddy), ibbażat u ispirat b’mod ħafif mir-rumanz ta’ Anton Manwel Caruana, Ineż Farruġ. Ambjentat f’dinja kontemporanja taż-żgħażagħ Maltin, l-istorja tipprova tifhem min hi Ineż tal-2016 u jekk għadhiex bla vuċi bħal dik ta’ Caruana fl-1421. Għax forsi tfajla għandha ħajja iktar libera fisseklu wieħed u għoxrin – imma l-pressjoni li s-soċjetà titfa’ fuqha biex tissodisfa l-ideali impossibbli ta’ dawk kollha ta’ madwarha għadha sfida kbira.

Boy and the World FILME DE PAPEL AGE 13+ FORM: FILM LANGUAGE: PORTUGUESE WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES CINEMA, ST JAMES CAVALIER 80 MINUTES SCREENING SCHEDULE FRIDAY 11TH NOVEMBER 2016: 9:30 FRIDAY 18TH NOVEMBER 2016: 17:30

46

‘THE MAKE-BELIEVE WORLD OF “BOY AND THE WORLD” IS CONFUSING, SCARY AND GORGEOUS. BUT THEN AGAIN, SO IS THE REAL ONE.’ WASHINGTON POST

Suffering due to the absence of a father, a boy leaves his village and discovers a fantastic world dominated by animal-machines and strange creatures. This extraordinary animation exemplifies the power of imagery and music as a combination that packs more than enough to portray the staggering issues of the modern world as seen through the innocent eyes of a child.

In-nuqqas tal-preżenza ta’ missier fil-ħajja ta’ tifel, tant tikkawżalu uġiegħ li fl-aħħar jieħu d-deċiżjoni li jitlaq mill-villaġġ tiegħu biex jimla dak il-vojt li jkollu jtambar ġewwa fih. Il-bogħod minn daru, jiskopri dinja mmexxija minn annimali magħmulin mill-magni, u kreaturi strambi. Din l-animazzjoni straordinarja tagħti eżempju ċar tal-qawwa awdjoviżiva tal-istampi u l-mużika, li flimkien joħolqu realtà fejn il-problemi tad-dinja moderna jistgħu jiġu ppreżentati u osservati mil-lenti ta’ tifel kurjuż.
