COMMUTING WITHOUT DODGING MYSELF IN MOTOR TRAFFIC SAVES TIME!
Design Discription: Baitasi is an important neighborhood in the historical city center of Beijing. Like many other hutong areas its original urban structure has been radically transformed in the last fifty years. A process of gentrification seems inevitable but could it be controlled in a way that it doesn’t necessarily lead to the expulsion of the local community and the complete loss of its urban identity? Data-based design ideas and methodologies are embraced throughout the design process. Starting from mapping and indexing, then prototypes building, to final design proposals. The intervention aims at transforming Baitasi into a new vibrant neighborhood through strategic nodal interventions. The introduction of new urban activators (the elevated platform) will trigger a slow–paced process of urban regeneration which call in question aggressive operations of demolition and reconstruction that has been happening in China.
