Red block building ‘Red block building’ is the main work of the vertical movement series that is pointing out the situation of blindly chasing fast speed in society. This project was started from building collapse accident in South Korea related to faulty construction that rashly implemented in the time when the country achieved fast development(1970-2000), The verticality in video is the resistance expression to the fast speed and it is a will to not to shaken by outward pace for Ji Yoon. With applying the expression to one of the red block building, as a symbol of the rapid speed inherent in society, the work conveying a message about the existence of potential dangerousness that we might don’t recognize in the speed society.

This fast forward speed remain an afterimage to our sight.

When the speed of world gets faster the afterimage looks like a horizontal scene.

And we are already tiredly exposed to this horizontally movement in our daily life. In an underground, bus, car, etc.

The horizontally move is flat. The flat has the attribute stretching easily and with internet makes us to able to connect with all of the world. Literally like a net.

It made us to immediately react to everything.

So we moves endlessly.

A Vertical movement

In a daily life, we infinitely move. But not like past, we move endlessly both in physically and mentally. Since the time when mobile phone having an inner battery, people started to carry a power battery to prevent the situation when they disconnected to the world. We have been addicted to a life with mobile. People charge their phone for whole night even though it is already fully charged. This activity related to an endless social connection. This connection never end, never pause. Endless connection took our moment to filter in ourselves away.

In endless connection we have been numbed to a fast forward world. In online notifications from apps kept our brain activated to a speed of world. Messages from people, postings in apps, many exciting activities in virtual life made our social connections infinitely activate.

We are used to stimulated by media; movie, youtube, commercial ad etc. The exaggerated images brought provocative impulse to us.

After when our vision used to catching up this fast forward speed, body senses has gotten dull. And this senses has been numbed our sympathy and empathy in life. For example, blood scene on movie or series isn’t really violent thing to people anymore. To impress public, most companies getting use more provocative images to promote themselves. Also in Youtube, now we can freely move video back and forward, skip scenes to watch what we want to. We eager to watch more short version and modified clips to save our time.

Why we becoming so fast? Since we achieved this fabulous technology, most of people got impatient. Our breath of sense getting shorter and faster like updated pages in online.

We can not stand at a moment and we are losing our pace.

At some point in our time, we need to take a breath. And breathing is a vertical movement in ourselves. It could have seen paused to the fast forward world. But it has also a movement, a different direction movement. It will lead us to recognize what we couldn’t feel in outward life. And it gives a time to us to face inner-self. Facing inward create depth. Creating depth is knowing our bottom. Numerous built layers create depth. And it shown history and time. The experience of stand on bottom at depth in me gives consolation. Because it concrete myself. Without knowing bottom, it’s just floating around at surface. Like a swimming. We need to calm down to swim by ourselves.

Solitude is opposite to endless connection in a fast forward world. It is independence.

Independence is a true freedom to a human. Floating life never can be independent. To live independently, human needs to take darkness in itself. The darkness of depth.

The solitude I convey is align with Hesse. Being alone is not all negative. It present a peaceful stillness to us. Solitude lead us to our own mind scape. Mind scape where our unconsciousness is. It placed at deep in our mind. It is the time of when we permeating to ourselves. At the mind scape, people can achieve a creativity. Getting down to there is difficult. It asks to us to take a patient to reach. A first encounter to bottom can be felt like a storm. It is dark, rough, scary and lonely. But if we decide to accept the darkness of depth, it’ll comes like a still wind. Like a wonderful stillness of space in which the stars revolve.
