BREAK THE BOUNDARIES ARCHITECTURAL DEPARTMENT HALL DESIGN A School as an Extension of the Capmus rchitecture is a scientific and artistic subject. A Every space in this building is all used for architectural students and teachers to create excellent design works. Beijing,as a capital among the world,is a multicultural city where students come from different background. It is very important for designers to design an interactive space, so that students are not restricted to existing ideas, theories and culture and make action to break the old routine with bold innovations and competiveness.Consequently,we present our final concept for this design—NO BOUNDARIES—break the boundaries.

BACKGROUND Beijing ,also known as Peking ,is the capital of the People's Republic of China and one of the most populous cities in the world, with a population of 19,612,368 as of 2010. The city is the country's political, cultural, and educational center, and home to the headquarters for most of China's largest state-owned companies. The metropolis, located in northern China, and Beijing is one of the Four Great Ancient

Capitals of China. It has been the heart of China’s history for centuries, and there is scarcely a major building of any age in Beijing that does not have at least some national historical significance. The city is renowned for its opulent palaces, temples, and huge stone walls and gates. Its art treasures and universities have long made it a centre of culture and art in China.

Site

There are majority middle and low buildings construted at campus with some outdoor activity places, such as central park, sports field.

Site

5 main entrances are at 4 sides of the campus zone. (2 at west and 1 at north, south, east repectively). The main passages are designed around the central landscape.

Attracting Points Other Points

The site is located at the corner of south and east, which is close to the library and some teaching buildings of other schools, and not far from the central park. However, the students' apartments are located at the west-nothern side.It is not convenient for students directly to get to their apartments. They need to cross through the teaching area.

CONCEPT NO BOUNDARIES

A School as an Extension of the Capmus The design starts from the concept of the box. Big box is the large space of the whole building system, while small boxes are small space elements. The boxes reflect the diversity of interior space forms. They coordinate and interact with each other and finally break the limitations of the large space, and integrate into the surrounding environment. From this design, we try to emphasize the importance of interaction between

buildings and the surrounding environment. Buildings, as the major component of a city, constantly grow in the environment. They are not individual, but a large group of individuals plays their own unique role. Meanwhile, we also hope that this bold design can stimulate students to break the inherent design thinking and some existing design theorties, trying different methods and forming their own unique design style.

INTERIOR LAYOUT Interaction& Communication Interaction and communication are the main purpose of the whole interior layout design. The whole space is divided into the relatively independent teaching area and the public communication area. The teaching area is composed of a number of classrooms which are designed by the concept of boxes , and they are placed in a different direction, which forms a disorder of the interior space. Due to this seemingly inorgnised space, users can find more possibility of the space use and more ways to communicate. At the top of the building, studios are placed in the open-air space. The open space provides a more imaginative working environment for designers.

RAMP GAME PRIMARY SCHOOL DESIGN Design For Children primary school should be attractive and interesting. A For parents, they believe that schools are educational places where everything is all for children's studies. However, as a contemporary school for children, it is not only to provide learning oppoturnities for students to get necessary knowledge, but also to pay attention on their mental heath. Especially for younger children, they spend their most of time on schooling. It is very important for children to get in-depth understanding of the world by having lessons, but we also should not ignore the extra activitis after class. So I try to combine the amusements with traditional teaching environment. Finally, The GAME has become my focus of this design. Individual Design Project Studio:The 3rd year Architecture Design studio II Duration:Sept.2014-Nov.2014 Site Location:Changsha City,China Tutor:Zhang Nan(munan0526@sina.com)

THE LOCATION | The site is locatied at Changsha City, Hunan, China. Changsha, a capital city of Hunan Province, is a transportation hub of Southern China. And the site we are now desining is locatied in the west

CHANGSHA CITY,CHINA side of the XiangJiang River of Changsha City. Also, the site is next to a big transprortation station, West Bus Terminal. So there is a proplem that this area is over-crowded with a lot of human activities and the traffic is complex.

PLOT GEOMOTRY | The site has a spacial location. It is surrounded by four crossroads, which is convenient for students to get to the school, but it is also not safe when the commuting time or peak hours, especially for some younger students. To the northeast there is

A CLOSER LOOK

a transprotation station. There will be a university developed in northweatern zone.To north, east and west, there are full of residential communities. Commercial areas are designed at southwest and south side.

CONCEPT Volume&Modulation Cuboid, as the basic volume of the whole building, which is cut by a zig zag line, and it is divided into East and west sides, forming a long strip atrium space, which is a core part of the building. It makes the content of the whole building complex and interesting. To both sides, there are many classrooms designed for teaching,

and the atrium bewteen two sides has become a space for communication and interaction. The east and west parts of the building are connected by corridors, which brings diverse layouts. For children, it is more like a full of fun aisle. This is what I want to bring to children most by this design—Learn From Fun.

CONCEPT Ramp Game At the beginning of this design, I have a lot of thinking about primary schools today, I have been thinking about how the school is exactly desined for children. For Adults, they have many social activities everday, and it is nacessary for them to develop a heathy lifestyles in a community, a city, a society and a country. However, for children, during their whole growing-up, they need not only to get in-depth understanding of the world they see with the fundamental konwledege, but also to have their own ways of interaction. So, for me

,as a designer, I try to creat a school where are full of interactive, communicative, attractive and interesting spaces. I let the element of ramps be involved in. As a element of games, it is the core of this design. I combine the atrium space with many ramps, making vertical traffic interesting and creative. Due to the design of this kind of fun space, childen may have a new understanding of schools, so as to improve more active interaction bewteen children. It is a primary school, but alao can be a amusement park.

CITY EFFECT RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY PLANNING&DESIGN A Community as New Blood of the City esidential communities are the most basic form of architecture in cities, and R it is the most closest way for residents to get along with the city they are living in. However, there are a lot of problems in residential areas today: designers tend to focus on improving the utilization rate of land and space, as far as possible to create more living spaces, which leads to the lack of public spaces for communication and interaction. Meanwhile, this has resulted in people are getting more and more indifferent in modern socities, neglecting the interpersonal skills. This deisgn aims to change the original residential form, to explore more possibility of residential areas. To inject the NEW BLOOD into the city.

CONCEPT City Effect | New Blood

Interlace

As a new des ign method of residential area, the interactive mode has a positive effect on the city. To break the traditional residential form,I explore the possibility of residential areas.

Interlaced spaces give people more opportunities and time for interaction and communication. This unusual and special architectural modeling has become the new blood of the city.

THE MASTERPLAN The entire residential area consists of the public service area, shops, studios and apartments, which is a multifunctional community. The layout is based on the hexagon and each unit is interlaced. This kind of form creats more open-air stage for communication. It will provide better office and living experience. Activity Centre

HENGYANG LAIYAN NEW TOWN TRANSFORMATION PLANNING&DESIGN Extension of Industrial Memory a old industrial area where we can see many industrial factories, and it Iist ais great challenge to reuse and transform this area into modern residential& commercial complex. Industrial memory is the main feature of the area, we will keep it and integrate into the new living environment, promoting people's sense of identity, which has the significance of continuity and Heritage.

FURONG PEDESTRIAN OVERPASS DESIGN Fashion ¡ Green ¡ Vitality order to meet the public requirements, the government of changsha decides Iton construct a pedestrian overpass on Furong South Road. Furong South Road is the main road of Changsha City, where there is the huge traffic, especially during rush hour, and there are many residential areas, office buildings, schools nearly , so the construction of the pedestrian overpass is necessary. Combining the theme of fashion, green and vitality, I design this pedestrian overpass as a new landmark of Changsha City.
