Week Three

Reading: Kolerevic B. 2003. Architecture in the Digital Age

Kolerevic described three fundamental type of fabrication techniques in the reading. Outline the three techniques and discuss the potential of Computer Numeric Controlled fabrication with parametric modelling. (150 words max)

Three fundamental type of fabrication techniques that Kolerevic have described in the reading are formative fabrication, subtractive fabrication and additive fabrication. Formative fabrication is a process which use heat or pressure to put material in place. As a result it will build a desired shape. Subtractive fabrication is a process of which use chemical, electricity and ect to remove parts from an entire material in order to from a desired shae. An Example of subtractive fabrication is CNC milling. The third one is the additive fabrication which is to add layers of material ontop of another layer to form the desired shape. An example of this fabrication would be the 3D printing. Computer Numeric Controlled (CNC) fabrication has a greate ability to benefit the architecture industry nowdays. As achitects are looking forward to design and inovate more complex shape that can be apply to the architecture, then CNC allows the achitects to build something that is impossible to build manually. On the other hand. CNC allows to generate more precise production, which also allow for cheap and faster prodution. Nowdays, CNC also allows to mass customisation, which means that digitally-controlled machinery can fabbricate unique and complexly-shaped components at a mass production scale. Mass customisacation is a particularly suitable production for the building and architecture industry.

Week Three

Surface Creation

At the beggining of scripting to find the desired surface, I was not have any image in my head of the particular surface that I want. However, after making few surface, I have finalized my surface. In the end, I decided to design two surafce that can generate large space at the bottom and relative small space on the top.

Week Four Panels & Waffle

On one faced, I designed a two pyramid shape geometry which is completely different with the another faced. This is because this side blocks sun light and air but this will create more shaping for the space in the waffle structure. On the other hand, it will also create more protection against the sun, rain and wind. On the another faced, I used a hollow single pyramid shape geometry wich allows greater sun light go through the panalling and reach the inside waffle structure. Not only the sun light, it will also allow air. People will also greate vision through this faced.

For the waffle strcuture, I decided to design a structure that has more space at the bottom. As the height of the structure increaces, the space inside the waffle structure will decrease relatively. From the aesthetic aspect, this waffle structure shows the beauty of curve. The waffle structure has a contrstive relationship with the panels. As the waffle structure shows sense of mellow feeling, but the panels outside shows a sense of sharp feeling. As a whole, two of these feelings are combined.

Week Four

Laser Cutting

During the process of creating a Laser Cut file, it is imprtant to know how do we want to laser cut them. As it is important to know what lines should be cut completely and what lines should be half-cut. When I was preparing the Laser Cut material, I decided to not use tape to tape the individual panels. Therefore, parts that should be completely cut, I changed them to half-cut. Lines that are completely cut are set on the cut layer, which are indicated in black color. Lines that are half-cut are set on the etch layer, which are shown as red color. Labelling individual panel is also important as it would be easier to assemble them later. However, I still made a misstake on the waffle structure, as the etch lines should be on the cut layer, and the some line on the cut layer should be on the etch layer so the waffle structure would not fall off

Week Five

In order to create an unique and interesting work, I have designed my own geometry, whcih is shown in the appendix. The allocation of each geometry are affected by the attractor point. Each geometry is also rotate in different angle to create more interation.

Week Five

Isometric

It can be seen from the isometric view of my task 2, that there are some small spaces and large spaces inside. The arrangement of the spaces there does not have any patterns. Overall, there are many spaces inside this design. During the process choising which iteration to develop and print, I had an idea to design somthing that has a lot of interior spaces which can be used for different purposes. Large space inside can be used for people to rest, people can climb in and lay inside those large space and read book. The space can also be used for people to “hide� and relax. Small spaces on the side can be used for people to lean on and chat with others at the same time.

Task 01 Matrix In the beggining of iterating for my task one, I had no clear vision of what exactly to design. However, when I was iterating for the surface, I realised that I want to build something that the space is changing. Then the final choise of my waffle structure came out. When I finished my waffle structure, I notice the mellow feeling. Then, an idea for the panel came out, then I decided to create something that has completely opposite feeling/idea with the waffle structure. Therefore, I decided to use pyramids to create a sense of strong and sharp feeling.

Task 02 Matrix In the begining, I had an idea of creating a structure that has large and small space inside. However, I did not which geometry will help me to build this idea. Then I tried to use the point attractor and different geometry to find the desired shape. Finally,after trying many iteration, I finally decided on my final design.
