Retail design is no longer only about shelves.

TOYSOURCE Clinton Hill,Brooklyn,New York, 2010

The ToySource concept store is sited on the original Pratt Store. It was an open plan (100’x 200’ x25’) with a mezzanine level. The design challenge lies on how to bring a bright and lively interior space into this dull factory-looking structure. The solution is to use polyester resin to create a continuous band which transform to shelves, counter top, sitting and other functional elements. By using dramatic lighting and creative surface materials, an interesting and interactive retail environment for kids and their parents was created.

Nordhavn 11 was a warehouse located at the north harbour of Copenhagen. The reuse of this building will be a designers’ lounge for creative professionals in the city. In order to take the advantage of its surrounding environment, the original facade is modified to blur the boundary between indoor and out. The interior space is also affected by the zones which cut out from facade openings. In mean while, the gallery area is constructed by sliding panels to maximize the flexibility, showing the respect of its original wood structure. Over all, it is designed to be a dynamic space for both business and pleasure.

LIBRARY C China Town, New York, 2009

Library C is sited at Manhattan’s China Town area. It serves both as a community library and a Chinese Culture/ Language Center. Thus, the design concept derives from the integration of traditional understanding on study process in Chinese history. We always use the metaphor of climbing a mountain when we talk about reading and study. The linear space indicates the process of learning. By creating a dominant stair case, the entire three story building is divided in to two major zones, vertically. Book zone holds five levels of book shelving system, accessed by the platform on the central stair case. Activity zone is separated from the stair case by a thick concrete wall. Openings on each floor level ensures more natural light and visual connection.
