Hello! My name is Ze Yao Zhao, though I go by LeiLei. I am a student at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. I see architecture as a powerful communication tool, one that I am eager to use. As you navigate through my portfolio, you may notice a reoccurring theme of bicycles, so I’ll also mention that I am also an avid cyclist! In this pavilions approach, we reconsidered the relationships architecture can have with its surroundings: rather than focusing on relations to that with people, this pavilion focuses on relations specifically with bicycles, cyclist, and the underlying cycling network of the city. Located adjacent to one of the busiest bicycle paths in the city, the pavilion seeks to provide storage for bicycles, and provide a well needed respite for patrons overlooking the harbourfront.

With the beautiful landscapes found in Taiwan, comes an extreme hot-humid climate. This offthe-grid research station, located along the Feicui Shuiku Scenic Area in Taipei, Taiwan, provides a dwelling for two scientists: a geologist and a soil surveyer. The building uses a vernacular, lightweight bamboo structure as a response to the site and climate: such a construction is advantages in hot humid climates and pays homage to the traditional architecture in Taiwan.

Bridge is a student led organization intended to engage students at the University of Waterloo with the community of Cambridge through events curated by students. Currently, Bridge lacks a storefront, there is no effective threshold; this project was done with the intentions of serving as such a threshold. The partition system creates a sense of mystery for the events inside, attracting interest to the space. When one enters or exits Bridge, it is done intentionally.

Connections between timber members are quickly fastened by inserting a pin that sits within the slits of the respective members. This installation method will allow for quick assemblage, as well as open up more options for reusing the timber.

As it is difficult to cost-effectively find lumber at sizes that can span across the entire width of the Bridge space, timber members will be limited to 11’ in length, resulting in the need for members to be joined end to end down the centre of the intervention

This library serves as a central cycling hub for Toronto: a city where the popularity of cycling as transportation is increasing, and the cycling infrastructure is constantly expanding. The library’s location at the current trailhead of the West Toronto Rail Path (which is set to expand and connect to the city core) and the programs of both a bike service shop and cycling resource center, will help foster the growing cycling network of the city.
