n our interview with writer Sadie Jones this month (see page 36), she discusses the values of hard work and the merits of inspiration; that one could not exist without the other. In this month’s issue there’s inspiration to be found on many of its pages. There are the wise words of Miss Jones, the intricate, striking designs of Chiswick-based artist Marthe Armitage and a look at a fascinating 100year-old Dutch barge on Chiswick Pier, decorated with style and sophistication. There’s also the intriguing news that Hollywood leading lady Kate Beckinsale, who obviously hasn’t forgotten her roots, is set to produce the story of the pioneering yet controversial activist Erin Pizzey, who opened the very first British women’s refuge in Chiswick in the early 70s. Behind these examples of creativity lies a steely drive and motivation. Well, of course; they are all women, after all. Continuing with an artistic theme, we’ve rounded up the top three European arty escapes in our travel section this month. What better excuse to get the creative juices flowing than with a backdrop of stunning Mediterranean views and glorious climate? Closer to home, we’ve also put together a guide to the best local establishments to enjoy that quintessentially British idiosyncrasy; afternoon tea. Go on, treat yourself – we deserve it after those never ending winter months. I hope you enjoy the issue. See you next time.
