Our Lady of the Assumption Mission Statement/ Declaración de la misión We, as faithful followers of Jesus Christ, create, nurture, and maintain a community of love through worship, reconciliation, healing, formation, education and service. Through Word and Eucharist, we seek the wisdom and guidance of the Holy Spirit, embracing the love of our Creator in each thought, word, and action. As humble servants of God, we remain faithful to the teachings of the Holy Roman Catholic Church, waiting in joyful hope for our Lord’s coming.

Advent Reflection God is with us always

Today is the last Sunday of Advent. We return to the image of the expectant mother, awaiting the birth of her child. So many joys, hopes, and dreams are a part of the waiting. We are the expectant parents. We await the soon-to-be-born Christ Child. God had promise a redeemer and Isaiah recounts God’s promise fulfilled in today’s Old Testament reading, “the Lord himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel.” This line is indeed the statement of our salvation. Jesus is called Emmanuel, or “God is with us.” He is with us always. All of our worries, cares, sorrows, and pain become bearable because Jesus is with us. He shows us that these things are but a part of the path to eternal life. With this realization, our joys overflow as we count down the days to Christmas. -2-

Our Lady of the Assumption School News Our Lady of the Assumption School students have been celebrating the season of Advent while preparing for the birth of Jesus. The weeks before Christmas are the busiest of the year for families, and at school, we have slowed down and celebrated the season of Advent by lighting classroom Advent wreaths, counting our blessings, going to confession, and collecting toys and food for those less fortunate. Following a cherished OLA tradition, St. Nicholas visited our school on December 6, leaving a small treat in each child’s shoe. The OLA Christmas Program, The XMAS FILES, was presented at two performances last Wednesday, December 18. The show featured all students in grades Kindergarten through 5, preceded by a musical serenade from the Preschoolers. Students from the school will join in the 4 PM Christmas Eve Children’s’ Liturgy. Our Lady of the Assumption School classes attend morning mass once each week, and there is an all-school liturgy once each month. Grades 4 and 5 attend morning mass on Mondays, grades 6, 7 and 8 attend on Wednesdays, and grades 1, 2 and 3 attend on Thursdays. Each Friday, the entire school begins the day on the school front lawn with a prayer service, flag salute and patriotic song. Parishioners are cordially invited to join us for monthly school liturgies, which are at 9:30 AM. The dates of school liturgies and all school events may be found on the school website at Catholic Schools Week will be celebrated at Catholic schools throughout the United States from January 26 – February 1, 2014. At Our Lady of the Assumption School, this week is a great occasion! We celebrate with a school liturgy, special recognition for our teachers and priests, service projects and two open house events. All parishioners, friends and prospective families are invited to visit our school on Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 8:30 AM or Thursday, January 30 at 7 PM (science fair display and tours)

During the increasing cold weather during the holidays, make sure children’s underclothing, gloves, and shoes stay dry. Cutting down your own tree for the holiday may start a wonderful family tradition. However, use eye protection and use extreme caution when cutting the tree, particularly when a chainsaw is used with children around.
