Safe Environment Did You Know? Internet filter software is no substitute for parental monitoring There is a lot of material on the Internet that is inappropriate for children. Parents can use filtering software to protect children from that material, but filters do not guarantee that children will not be exposed; a filter will never be a substitute for parents’ presence. Monitor your child’s online behavior. Keep your family computer in a highly visible, common area, like the family room or the kitchen. Ask your children to show you what sites they go to, and be open and willing to discuss the inappropriate material they might come across. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

Parish Spirituality & Fellowship RCIA – Right of Christian Initiation of Adults
Eileen Jones, Music Minister, Retires
Here at Our Lady of the Assumption Parish we have a warm welcome for anyone looking for a faith-filled Christian community within the Roman Catholic tradition. We invite those who are interested in the Catholic Christian community and the Catholic way of life to participate in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) experience. RCIA is a one year experience where people gradually learn what it means to be Catholic not just by learning about it, but also experiencing Catholic life and worship as a part of the parish community. RCIA involves preparation of non-baptized adults for sacraments of initiation, as well as adults already baptized who are interested in receiving the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation. In addition this experience is available to Catholics who have been away from the active practice of their faith and are considering returning to active participation, as well as those who want to grow in the depth of understanding of the faith. A night of inquiry has been scheduled for Tuesday, September 10th at 7:00 p.m. in the Santa Cruz room. Come meet members of the RCIA team and have your questions answered. For more information please contact Deacon Don & Diana Huntley via email at RCIA@ola-vta.org or by phone at 642-7966 x123. The door is open, welcome home!
This weekend we say goodbye to Eileen Jones, who is retiring after 31 years as a faithful music minister at OLA. You may not see her often, but you have certainly heard her beautiful music floating down from the choir loft! Eileen is currently the accompanist for the 9:30 choir in addition to playing piano and organ for our other Masses. Over the years Eileen has served in many capacities for our parish. She began her career here (after a firm “nudge” from Msgr. Mulcahy) in 1982. She has served as organist , music director and cantor, played guitar for and directed the folk choir, directed traditional choirs, small and large, and has been involved in many musical performances. She has also played and sung for countless funerals and weddings over the years. We have also been fortunate to have had Eileen’s husband Randy as part of our music family as well. No doubt you have heard the wonderful sound of his trumpet playing at 9:30 Mass and at many other parish events. In their retirement, Eileen and Randy plan to travel, spend time with family and continue to make music together. Eileen offers sincere thanks to everyone she has worked with and says she has always felt loved and supported by her OLA family. She will miss the people the most. And we will most certainly miss her. We wish her well and thank her for her years of service, dedication and most importantly, her friendship.
Growing Your Faith “Knowledge for Your Faith Journey” Have you ever been approached by your child, neighbor or coworker and asked: Why do Catholics make the Sign of the Cross? Why do Catholics hold Mary in such high regard? Or other questions you may not be comfortable answering. Come grow with us. Come learn the answers to these and other questions so you can share your faith with those you love. We will be exploring the richness of our faith. Tuesdays From 7:00- 8:30 pm Starting August 27th in Hurley Hall
Hermits of St. Giles Hello, We seldom meditate on Christ Jesus' emotional suffering. We mostly meditate upon His physical suffering during His last days. In His earlier days He suffered a great deal emotionally. He had rocks thrown at Him, He was chased out of many villages and He was even called satan himself. All of this had played havoc on His heart and mind. Many of us can relate to this emotional struggle. When others verbally attack us, or if we have been pushed away by those we thought were friends. These are moments in our lives where we can hold on to Christ, for He has indeed suffered in all ways we have. We are complex beings yet Christ Jesus understands each of these complexities. Have a most blessed week. Pax et Bonum, B.Mark Hermits of St. Giles

In addition to enjoying all the talented acts, we will also hold a raffle with some wonderful prizes as a fundraiser for our music ministry. The coffee for the evening has generously been donated by Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf! In order to maintain the quality of our music program and the overall sound system in the church, it is sometimes necessary to purchase or replace essential equipment. Here are just some things that, with your help, we are working toward acquiring: New sound board –the current one is very old and tired! The downstairs keyboard is playing sour notes Drum set- the old one has taken a beating! New microphones- can you hear me now? If you would like to sign up as a performer (all types of acts are welcome) , help as a greeter, with set-up or cleanup, or donate a dessert, please contact Vincent at vdominguez@ ola-vta.org
Many Meals Many Meals serves our parish family as well as the community as a whole. Our guests come for a hot meal as well as faith sharing fellowship. We are blessed with a dedicated group of volunteers doing many different types of jobs to provide this meal service every week. For those who might not be familiar with how the program works, we have a crew who cooks the meal in our kitchen at Mulcahy Center. Most of the ingredients for the meal are donated by our generous parishioners. The meal is then transported catering style, to the meal service location where there are several groups of volunteers who set up the hall, do all the kitchen prep, greet and serve our guests, assist them during the meal and clean up. If you are interested in becoming involved in the Many Meals program, please email David at firstname.lastname@example.org. We will add you to our distribution list and you will receive a weekly email with the work crew and food donations needed for that week. The program is set up to be very flexible for our volunteers. We would like to thank our parishioners for their generosity and continued support of the Many Meals ministry. Please keep this ministry in your prayers. For more information please contact David at 9105788 or Diane at 642-7966 ext. 133
