First Communion certificates and pictures from last year can be picked up here.

Safe Environment Did You Know? Never leave your children in a hot car. Did you know that it only takes 10 minutes for a car to heat up by 19 degrees? Every so often we hear news stories of parents forgetting infants or leaving a sleeping toddler in the car, and tragedies that ensue. Never leave a child alone in a car, even for a minute. Degrees can be deceiving. Fatalities can occur at temperatures as low as the mid-50s because a vehicle heats up so quickly. Children are at a great risk for heat stroke because their bodies heat up three to five times faster than an adult's does. Cracking a window? Not a solution. Some advanced technologies are still being developed that may help prevent heat stroke deaths in vehicles, but nothing has been proven effective yet. For more information visit, http://www.care.com/child-care-summer-safety-tips-aguide-to-protecting-kids-when-activities-heat-up-p1017q6731064.html For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

Year of Faith Prayer Prayer for Priestly Vocations Father, in every generation you provide ministers of Christ and the Church. We come before you now, asking that you call forth more men to serve our Archdiocese in the ministerial priesthood. Give us priests who will lead and guide your holy people gathered by Word and Sacrament. Bless us with priestly vocations so that we can continue to be a truly Eucharistic Church, strengthened in our discipleship of Jesus Christ, your Only Son. Raise up, we pray, men who are generous in their service, willing to offer their lives and all their gifts for your greater glory and for the good of your people. We make our prayer in the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, through Christ, Our Lord.

Amen

This Sunday’s Readings

Parish Spirituality & Fellowship Families of Nazareth Movement

BARNS FILLED WITH RICHES The mortgage is paid off. So are the loans that were taken out for college tuition and children’s weddings. The second home that was once a far-off dream is now so close that it seems safe to dig out the real estate magazines. And then . . . a daughter or son can no longer take care of a child. It’s time to start over, this time as grandparents in the parents’ role. Thousands of older adults face this situation today, becoming temporary or permanent guardians of their grandchildren. Vanity of vanities. The years of toil with sights set on a great reward now belong to someone else: food, clothing, braces, summer camps, and school tuition. But, as one grandmother said of her 13-year-old granddaughter, Megan, “It has all been worth it. She brings such joy. What would I do without her?” And so the barns filled with “riches” are again taken down and new and true riches are discovered. Once again a new self is found in Christ, and the storehouse is filled with life that is truly pleasing to God.

Being Rich In What Matters To God “Someone who is poor in spirit seeks only God and His will and desires no other riches. God comes to those who have nothing because only those who have nothing truly need Him.” S.C. Biela, Open Wide the Door to Christ, (Ft.Collins, CO: IAMF, 2005), 99.

Families of Nazareth Movement (FNM) consists of parish based faith-sharing groups whose emphasis is on helping Catholics live out their call to holiness in the midst of the very real challenges of family life today. Cancer care givers, survivors and principals are all invited to come to the Cancer Support Group on August 14th in the Parish House from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Please join us as we prayerfully listen, learn and share how diet has and can supplement your cancer treatment. Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month in the rear section of the Parish House located at 21 N. Dunning Street from 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm. More Info: Rochida McClure at 805-746-0727 or Rochida.McClure@gmail.com

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When Pope Pius XII died in 1958, there was the usual buzz of speculation about likely successors. Cardinal Agajanian, Patriarch of the Armenians, was highly thought of as a likely choice. This took many Catholics by surprise, since he had never celebrated the same liturgy as Pope Pius, but followed ancient Armenian customs according to the Eastern Church, which veils the Eucharisic liturgy from sight by a series of curtains, and in which the priest kneels while the people stand for Communion. In the years that followed, the Second Vatican Council would affirm the dignity and independence of the Eastern Churches, in complete union with Rome, yet different in patterns of life and worship. We have the same faith, the same sacraments, and the same pope. Yet everywhere in the world our separate Churches are combined into families held together by the ministry of bishops. All of this serves as warning: If you ever say, “But we’ve always done it this way,” you are on very thin ice indeed!

GriefShare/Bereavement Support Group: This group is open to any adult who has lost a loved one through death, whether your loss is recent or many years old. We invite you to join us to find support and help in working through the grief process and transforming your pain into healing. We meet in the Parish HOUSE (21 N. Dunning St.) from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Entry is down the driveway, through the gate and backdoor. The group is led by Ken Lynch, a Bereavement Minister commissioned through the Los Angeles Archdiocese. For more information please call Ken's cell at 310-720-9943 or send an email: kenlynch123@aol.com Next Meetings: Aug 20, September 3 & 17.

Parish Spirituality & Fellowship RCIA – Right of Christian Initiation of Adults

Rosary Makers

Here at Our Lady of the Assumption Parish we have a warm welcome for anyone looking for a faith-filled Christian community within the Roman Catholic tradition. We invite those who are interested in the Catholic Christian community and the Catholic way of life to participate in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) experience. RCIA is a one year experience where people gradually learn what it means to be Catholic not just by learning about it, but also experiencing Catholic life and worship as a part of the parish community. RCIA involves preparation of non-baptized adults for sacraments of initiation, as well as adults already baptized who are interested in receiving the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation. In addition this experience is available to Catholics who have been away from the active practice of their faith and are considering returning to active participation, as well as those who want to grow in the depth of understanding of the faith. A night of inquiry has been scheduled for Tuesday, September 10th at 7:00 p.m. in the Santa Cruz room. Come meet members of the RCIA team and have your questions answered. For more information please contact Deacon Don & Diana Huntley via email at RCIA@olavta.org or by phone at (805) 642-7966 x123. The door is open, welcome home!

There will not be a meeting in August. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, September 11th at 9:30am in the Parish House located at 21 N. Dunning. For more information or to have a rosary fixed, please call Aurora at 654-0316.

Defenders For Life Defenders of Life is a monthly gathering of many people from area parishes, who participate in activities and events promoting pro-life issues. The group supports all ministries in all parishes in their pro life efforts to transform and promote the culture of life. The next meeting is on August 21ar at 4:00pm in the Parish House of Our Lady of the Assumption. 21 N. Dunning St. Questions? Please call Carol at 647-5345.

Hermits of St. Giles Hello, As I sat down to write today I wanted to explore the sin of pride and vanity. You see, I am still very conscience of appearing disabled. It keeps me from going out and being seen. It is as if my disability makes me feel lesser than others. My challenge is to always remember to see myself as God sees me. That I, am perfect in His eyes. I am exactly as He has made me. And, by the way, so are you!! Recently, a dear friend of mine gave me a book titled “Disability and the Gospel”. The subtitle was “How God uses our brokenness to display His grace”. My sin of pride diminishes His work in me. It turns me away from the wonderful grace of God’s love. Seen through this perspective it is in fact, a very easy choice to turn from His grace. I must pray to always remember that God is leading me on this life journey. My simple job is to follow Him even if, according to the world’s standards, I look different or not as my prideful self would like to look like. God’s gift of my weakness brings me closer to Him more than any grand gesture of strength that I could show. Do I pray for healing? YES. Do I pray for a miracle? YES. But I also send a prayer of thanksgiving, because I know that God has not forgotten me or left me behind. I am always resting in His arms (wheelchair and all).

Bible Study Is Matthew Calling You? Looking for something to do on Wednesday nights to round out your Summer and start the Fall ? Do you have an interest in knowing more about the Gospel According to Matthew? Do you want to take a new road on your faith journey? If any of those questions interest you, mark your calendars for 10 Wednesday nights starting on August 7, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Each Wednesday night we will gather in the Santa Cruz Room with Ken Lynch as the group leader and explore this wonderful and important Gospel. Please bring your Bibles and a pad of paper if you want to take notes ! Anyone interested is asked to contact Ken Lynch at 310-720-9943 or kenlynch123@aol.com for more detailed information.

Parish Spirituality & Fellowship Many Meals

Attention all Ushers & Greeters

Many Meals serves our parish family as well as the community as a whole. Our guests come for a hot meal as well as faith sharing fellowship. We are blessed with a dedicated group of volunteers doing many different types of jobs to provide this meal service every week. For those who might not be familiar with how the program works, we have a crew who cooks the meal in our kitchen at Mulcahy Center. Most of the ingredients for the meal are donated by our generous parishioners. The meal is then transported catering style, to the meal service location where there are several groups of volunteers who set up the hall, do all the kitchen prep, greet and serve our guests, assist them during the meal and clean up.

Join us on Saturday, August 17 at 2:00 pm in Mulcahy Center for some training and orientation regarding OLA’s Usher and Greeter ministries. We will go over the Usher’s Handbook and some recently updated emergency procedures. ALL EXISTING USHERS AND GREETERS ARE URGED TO ATTEND, ALONG WITH ANYONE WHO WISHES TO BE AN USHER OR GREETER. We will serve yummy hors d’oeuvres and cold drinks, so please join us for this informative meeting. Invite anyone who has expressed interest in these important ministries. Please RSVP to David at 642-7966 ext.109 or ddevillers@ola-vta.org Thank you!

If you are interested in becoming involved in the Many Meals program, please email David at ddevillers@ola-vta.org. We will add you to our distribution list and you will receive a weekly email with the work crew and food donations needed for that week. The program is set up to be very flexible for our volunteers. It is not necessary to make a long term commitment. You simply respond to the email with what you would like to donate or which crew you are available to work with for that particular week. Thank you! We would like to thank our parishioners for their generosity and continued support of the Many Meals ministry. Please keep this ministry in your prayers. For more information please contact David at 6427966 ext 109 or Diane at ext. 133

Worldwide Marriage Encounter A Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend will help you enjoy life with a new closeness to each other and God. Come join us for a weekend which gives you the time and tools to revitalize romance, deepen communication, and nourish the spirituality in your marriage. The next WWME Weekend is Sept. 20-22 in Chatsworth. Apply on line at www.twocanlove.org or call Jeanine and Russ Walker: 805-648-4244.

Parking Lot Information We recognize that parking can be very challenging depending on the level of activity at the church and schools. To be safe and courteous, please park only in marked parking stalls. Do not park along the curbs or walls that do not have marked stalls. Parking outside of the stalls blocks cars in and violates fire safety codes. This is for Mass and any other church events. There is additional parking available at St. Bonaventure High School during Sunday Masses. Thank you for your cooperation.

Beyond the Choir Loft

As a Church, we have many opportunities through our ministries to show respect for life. Please choose an area from the following list that you feel called to. Contact the person listed for that ministry and volunteer. You are wanted and needed.

Thank you to Bob Schilken, Jack Folger, and Keith York for their work in helping to prepare the choir loft for painting and recarpeting, as well as the reorganization of our loft after all the work was finished! These parishioners volunteered many hours to make sure everything ran smoothly during the painting and carpeting process, so we thank them for their time and hard work!!
