Did You Know?
LIVING GOD’S COMMANDS The first reading forms part of Moses’ farewell discourse, a call to the people to return to God. It is not a legalistic summons; rather, it is an appeal to heart and soul. It outlines a command that is not impossible to follow, or too difficult to undertake, or too expensive. Look into your hearts, says Moses; there you will find what to do. Paul sees Jesus Christ as the image of God, the agent of creation and preservation. We sense, in his words, things profound: “dominions or principalities or powers.” But in the midst of that, Paul keeps his attention on Jesus Christ, head of the church. It is in Christ that we find fullness and reconciliation—in the blood of the cross. Luke’s Gospel illustrates the double commandment of love with the story of the Good Samaritan. The story is a radical one, for it comes to focus on the question of who my “neighbor” is. That neighbor is not identified with any group, but rather by the scope of our compassion.
Helping victims of abuse The first obligation of the Church with regard to victims is for healing and reconciliation. The Archdiocese continues to reach out to every person who has been a victim of sexual abuse as a minor by anyone in church service, whether that abuse is recent or occurred in the past. The Archdiocese’s Victims Assistance Ministry helps victims/ survivors who have been victims of sexual abuse by priests, deacons, or individuals representing the Catholic Church. The Victim Assistance Coordinator, Suzanne Healy, is available to help victims/survivors make a formal complaint of abuse to the Archdiocese, and to obtain support for the needs of the individual and families. Suzanne Healy can be reached by calling, (213) 637-7650. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

Parish Spirituality & Fellowship Year of Faith: Finishing Strong
Families of Nazareth Movement
Have you enjoyed prayerfully walking this faith journey initiated by Pope Emeritus Benedict last October (and ending this November)? Are you surprised how quickly the year has gone and wish you had been more connected to this spiritual opportunity? Whether you identify with either statement or find yourself falling somewhere in between, this July presents an opportunity to "finish strong" in living this Year of Faith. Mark you calendars for Tuesday July 16, 23 & 30 for the last three parts of our four part Scripture centered journey focused on the Year of Faith. Each night interested parishioners will gather from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Santa Cruz room with Deacon Don as facilitator. As a group we will use the book, "The Year of Faith: A Bible Study Guide For Catholics", by Fr. Mitch Pacwa, S.J. to grow in knowledge of this incredible and unique spiritual gift known as the Year of Faith. Anyone interested is asked to contact Deacon Don at 642 -7966 x123 or RCIA@ola-vta.org in order to order the book and for more detailed information.
Being Open To Be Helped By The Good Samaritan "Only someone who experiences the burden of sickness opens himself to the full care of the physician as the physician stoops down to him in order to help. The light of God, who knocks on the doors of our hearts, can be received only to the extent of our human insufficiency. We experience this insufficiency only to the extent to which we discover the truth about our own limitations and poverty." S.C. Biela, Open Wide the Door to Christ, (Ft.Collins, CO: IAMF, 2005), 153.
Families of Nazareth Movement (FNM) consists of parish based faith-sharing groups whose emphasis is on helping Catholics live out their call to holiness in the midst of the very real challenges of family life today. Tuesday morning group meets @ 9:30 am at the Parish House. Contact Lyla Alexander at 644-5795 for info. Wednesday evening group is @ 7:30 pm in the San Miguel Room at the Parish Center. Contact Phyllis Crews at 805-643-5361 for more info.

Cost is $20 for the Workbook. Please bring your Catholic Bible. The weekly lessons involve study questions you do during the week for five days, then we meet on Mondays for prayer and small groups to discuss the study questions and enjoy fellowship. Please register as soon as possible to get a workbook. Registrations can be dropped off to the Parish Office with your payment. For questions please contact Kati Escallier at Kescallier@ola-vta.org.
Many Meals serves our parish family as well as the community as a whole. Our guests come for a hot meal as well as wonderful fellowship. We are blessed with a dedicated group of volunteers doing many different types of jobs to provide this meal service every week. For those who might not be familiar with how the program works, we have a crew who cooks the meal in our kitchen at Mulcahy Center. All of the ingredients for the meal are donated by our generous parishioners. The meal is then transported catering style, to the meal service location where there are several groups of volunteers who set up the hall, do all the kitchen prep, greet and serve our guests, assist them during the meal and clean up. If you are interested in becoming involved in the Many Meals program, please email David at firstname.lastname@example.org. We will add you to our distribution list and you will receive a weekly email with the work crew and food donations needed for that week. The program is set up to be very flexible for our volunteers. It is not necessary to make a long term commitment. You simply respond to the email with what you would like to donate or which crew you are available to work with for that particular week. Thank you! We would like to thank our parishioners for their generosity and continued support of the Many Meals ministry. Please keep this ministry in your prayers. For more information please contact David at (805) 642-7966 ext 109 or Diane at ext. 133 Meals being served this month: July 17 — Many Meals Meatloaf July 24 — Garlic Parmesan Chicken July 31 — OLA Shepherd’s Pie

Hermits of St. Giles Greetings, Well we are right smack into the middle of summer. I sometimes wish we had more sun during these months, but then I see how most of the country is suffering from the heat and I thank God for the cooler weather. It's in the simple things in life, the ones we mostly forget about, that God shows the wonders of His grace and love. When we move to fast we miss them and that beautiful encounter with God passes us by. Try slowing down a bit and embrace the simple things. You may begin to experience the peace that rests hidden there. Have yourself a most blessed week. Love and prayers, Bro.Mark

Parking Lot Information We recognize that parking can be very challenging depending on the level of activity at the church and schools. To be safe and courteous, please park only in marked parking stalls. Do not park along the curbs or walls that do not have marked stalls. Parking outside of the stalls blocks cars in and violates fire safety codes. This is for Mass and any other church events. There is additional parking available at St. Bonaventure High School during Sunday Masses. Thank you for your cooperation.
