Our Lady of the Assumption Mission Statement We, as faithful followers of Jesus Christ, create, nurture, and maintain a community of love through worship, reconciliation, healing, formation, education and service. Through Word and Eucharist, we seek the wisdom and guidance of the Holy Spirit, embracing the love of our Creator in each thought, word, and action. As humble servants of God, we remain faithful to the teachings of the Holy Roman Catholic Church, waiting in joyful hope for our Lord’s coming.

The Preview to Easter

Adelanto a la Pascua

Today’s gospel focuses on Jesus’ desire to strengthen the apostles’ understanding of his divine mission. Matthew relates in Chapter 16 that Jesus had been discussing his passion with his disciples when Peter responded, “Master, God forbid that any such thing ever happen to you!” Jesus realizes that the apostles need to be strengthened in their faith and understanding. He invites Peter, James, and John to accompany him up the mountain where, “he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes become white as light.” This glorification is complemented by Moses’ presence which acknowledges the culmination of the law in the person of Jesus and Elijah’s presence which signifies the fulfillment of the prophesies in the person of Jesus. God the Father echoes his loving approval of Jesus which was given at his baptism. This moment of transfiguration is the visual affirmation that Jesus is God’s Son and our Savior. Jesus’ transfigured image contrasts starkly with that of his passion, causing the apostles much confusion which is not fully clarified until after his resurrection. Paul reminds us in today’s epistle that like the apostles we must grow in our faith to the understanding that, “[God] saved us and called us to a holy life, not according to our works but according to his own design…the appearance of our savior Christ Jesus, who destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.” This is our Easter promise.
