The Necessity for Lent

La Necesidad de la Cuaresma

The two temptation stories in today’s readings focus on original sin and its effects on man’s relationship with God. The Book of Genesis recounts the temptation in the Garden of Eden when after eating the fruit, “the eyes of both [Adam and Eve] were opened, and they realized that they were naked.” This recounting of the original sin reminds us that we must not aspire beyond that which God intends for us. Adam and Eve’s awareness brought them to knowledge that was not theirs to possess. This knowledge led them to question God’s plan and their resulting shame and fear became the pattern for man’s relationship with God. From this shame and fear the human weaknesses emanate. Satan knows these weaknesses of human nature and plays upon them through temptations. Matthew’s gospel tells how Satan was so bold that he tempted Jesus in the desert by appealing to the human weaknesses of appetite, pride, and idolatry. But Jesus resists the devil three times and casts him away saying, “The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve.” Jesus’ words remind us that Lent is the time to renew and restore our relationship with God as we ask that his bountiful blessing “come down upon [us], that hope may grow in tribulation, virtue be strengthened in temptation, and eternal redemption be assured through Christ our Lord” (Prayer Over the People).

Did You Know? A good photo could save a child’s life One of the most important tools for law enforcement to use in the case of a missing child is an updated (every six months), good school-portrait quality, head-andshoulders color photograph of the child in which the face is clearly seen. The background should be plain or solid so it does not distract from the subject. When possible, the photograph should be in a digitized form, and available on a compact disk (CD), as opposed to just a hard copy. This minimizes the time necessary to scan, resize, and make color corrects before disseminating it to law enforcement. The photograph should have space for accurate, narrative description useful to identify the child such as name, nickname, height, weight, sex, age, eye color, identifying marks, glasses, and braces. ¿SABIA USTED?
