The establishment of the Office of Safeguard the Children in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the formation of Safeguard the Children Parish Committees in the parishes were mandated by Cardinal Roger Mahoney in 2002. The Office of Safeguard the Children assists these permanent Parish Committees in implementing child sexual abuse prevention education, Safe Environment policies, procedures and resources. Click on for more information. All volunteers working with or around children must be fingerprinted through the Archdiocese and certified in the Safeguard the Children Program Protecting God’s Children. Information for both fingerprinting and Safeguard Classes are listed below. The Virtus training must be updated every 4 years. However, instead of the 3-hour Protecting God's Children program, people can recertify by completing the 1.5 hour Keeping the Promise Alive program. and was ordained in 1972. He was an associate pastor in six very diverse parishes throughout the archdiocese of Los Angeles. After parish ministry, he was involved for 18 years in the spiritual formation of seminarians at St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo. As of July 1, 2005, Jack became the director of the Cardinal Manning House of Prayer for Priests in Los Angeles. He has completed years of graduate studies in spirituality and is especially schooled in Ignatian spirituality.

WORKSHOP SPEAKERS From 10 to 11:30am participants will have the choice of attending one of the following workshops Encountering God through the Eucharist: This workshop will focus on the Eucharist as the Mystery of Faith: "We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection until you come again." It will bring out the intimate connection between the Paschal Mystery, the Last Supper and the celebration of the Eucharist. For us, the Eucharist is the most profound way we have of encountering the God who loves us and wants to give us nothing less than Himself, both here and the hereafter. The highest communion we can have with our God in this world is through the Eucharist.

Encountering God through Music: From ancient times, people sang and played songs to worship, praise, and connect with God. How do you experience God through music? Come and explore various ways that music helps us encounter God.

Carol Browning: Carol has been active as a pastoral musician and liturgist for more than twenty years, for the past fifteen years mainly in Roman Catholic, Episcopal, and Lutheran settings, although she is a member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). She is a liturgical composer, on her own and as part of the Collegeville Composers Group and an independently published songwriter. Carol writes articles for liturgical music magazines, presents on liturgical & music topics, and is active in ecumenical and contemplative prayer services.

Fr. Jack Brennan: A native of Ireland, Fr. Brennan was ordained there in 1968 in the Society of African Missions (SMA). He worked in Argentina teaching theology from 1969 to 1979. In 1981 he completed his doctoral studies in Rome and from 1981 to 1990 he taught theology at St. Augustine's Major Seminary in Jos, Nigeria. He joined the faculty of St. John's Seminary in 1991 and has been there since. He has published two books: Christian Mission in a Pluralistic Age (1990) and Christ the One Sent (1997 and Spanish ed. 2000). - 5-

Encountering God through Scripture: Paul, in 2 Tim 3:16-17, states that “the Bible, or Sacred Scripture, is the written, inspired, word of God.” This presentation will review God salvific work evidenced in creation, in the covenants with the patriarchs, in the mighty works of the exodus, in the choosing of a people, in the giving of the law and covenant at Sinai, in the conquest of the Promised Land, in the sending of his Son, through whom God unveils the totality of who God is and his plan of salvation. This is what we call Salvation History, God reaching out to us time and time again. Through all of Sacred Scripture we encounter God; the question is “How do we respond?” Deacon Ed Mills: Deacon Ed Mills is currently the Director of Diaconate Formation and Continuing Education for Deacons for the Santa Barbara Pastoral Region. He has taught graduate and postgraduate studies at Loyola Marymount University, California Lutheran University, Mount St. Mary’s, and the University of Southern California. As well as being a Deacon at Our Lady of the Assumption Parish in Ventura, he is a grief counselor, a county/city fire department chaplain, a retreat master and spiritual director.

Encountering God through Forgiveness: We know that forgiveness is good for the soul, this class with examine how forgiveness is good for the brain. As we study the brain, and the impact that forgiveness has on the brain, we can understand why God wants us to forgive seventyseven times seven. We will review many practical tools to help us encounter God on the road to forgiveness. Paul Brogan : an Irish born psychotherapist with a practice in Encino. He teaches graduate classes on Anger Management, Loss and Grief, Trauma, Alcohol and Substance Abuse and Domestic Violence at Mount St. Mary's College. More information is available at

Encountering God through our Relationships: Healthy Boundaries…. Healthy Life! Having clear boundaries is essential to a healthy, balanced life. Our relationships grow and are nurtured by knowing when to say YES and how to say NO. This workshop will give you simple tools to develop healthy boundaries with family, friends and work. We will also explore how our faith can help us create and sustain these healthy boundaries. Veronica Marchese: Veronica is a Secular Franciscan and a licensed Marriage and Family therapist with a private practice in Ventura, CA. She has worked in parish ministry and in Catholic school settings for the Los Angeles Archdiocese since 1989. In addition to her private practice, she currently is completing a Doctorate in Depth Psychology and leads retreats and workshops throughout Southern California.

The Young Africans in OUR AFRICAN DREAM!

Children: What can you do this week to show your classmates that you believe in the Good News?

Friday, February 3, 2012 7:00 pm in the Church

Did You Know?

The Young Africans is a gifted group of singers, musicians and dancers who were all once a part of the worldrenowned African Children's Choir. Now 17-21 years old and more talented than ever, they are poised to fulfill their promise and make a difference in their communities back home, and they are thrilled to share what God has been doing in their lives and how their African Dreams are becoming a reality.

The Right Pet for Your Child’s Age Kids and pets—a natural fit, right? Indeed, raising a child and pet together can be a lot of fun for the whole family. If you’re thinking of adding a pet to the family, make sure you’re bringing home an animal that is appropriate for your child’s age. The ASPCA offers helpful tips to teach young members of the family to care for and ‘play nice’ with their pets, helping to foster humane habits and a lifelong bond. For more information, please visit the ASPCA website and click on “Kids and Pets”:

OUR AFRICAN DREAM is a unique, powerful, and uplifting presentation that showcases the best of African dance and music, while also bringing new, vibrant life to American spirituals, contemporary worship songs and of course gospel favorites!

For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

Admission is free for all ages! A free-will offering will be taken to support the Music for Life Institute. The African Children’s Choir has been Music for Life’s major international program during its 27-year history. Music for Life (MFL) has relief and development programs in seven African countries. MFL has currently educated over 52,000 children and hundreds of thousands of lives have been impacted by their international programs. The Young Africans are a direct outcome of support like yours over the years!

————— Hermits of St. Giles —————— Greetings to You, Our relationship with God does take some work, but what stands above and beyond is to have an open heart and a willingness to let God take us wherever God desires to take us. While developing this relationship be patient with yourself. Give time out of the day for just God. Perhaps one day you can say a Rosary, another day perhaps 20 minutes to Lectio Divina. The idea is to mix it up a bit just as we do when we are with our friends and our loved ones. This will keep the spice in the relationship. Have a most blessed week. Love and prayers, Bro. "The way of contrition begins with short acts of contrition and gratitude. For example, when you realize some unfaithfulness, something that you discover as pain inflicted upon Jesus, you may try, perhaps clumsily, to tell Him that you are sorry.
