NIGERIA, ISHAN (ESAN) 157 Seltene figurale Skuptur „izemize“ schweres Holz, übermalt Nach Picton, dürften diese Schnitzwerke, vielleicht zusammen mit figural beschnitzten Pfosten, zur Dekoration von Häusern wohlhabender Männer oder Würdenträger gedient haben. Vorliegendes Objekt, als auch die beiden anderen Skulpturen, weisen Ähnlichkeit zu figural beschnitzten Verandapfosten auf, die Allison 1960 auf einem Foto in Iubiadan-Emu festhielt. Allison schreibt die figuralen Pfosten den Ishan Gemeinden im Nordosten des Königreichs Benin und nördlich von Agbor zu. Die Figuren sollen „ize-
mize“ - „menschliche Figur, die nicht sprechen kann“ genannt worden sein. Ishan ist die anglizierte Form von „Esan“, wie Angehörige dieses Volkes sich ursprünglich nannten und was abgeleitet sein soll von „esanfua“ „die, die geflohen sind“. Denn viele Ishan-Gemeinden führen ihre Herkunft auf Vorfahren zurück, die einst das Königreich Benin verließen, um der Unterdrückung zu entgehen oder sich der dortigen Justiz zu entziehen. Vgl. Rare figural sculpture „izemize“ heavy wood, repainted According to Picton, these carvings, perhaps together with figural carved posts, may have been used to decorate homes of wealthy men or dignitaries. The present object, as well as the other two sculptures, is similar to figuratively carved veranda pillars, captured on a photograph by Allison in 1960 in Iubiadan-Emu. Allison assigns the figural posts to the Ishan communities in the northeast of the Kingdom of Benin and north of Agbor. The figures are said to be called „izemize“ - „human figure that cannot speak“. Ishan is the anglicised form of „Esan“, that people of this community originally called themselves. The name is derived from „esanfua“ - „those who have fled“. For many Ishan communities trace their ancestry back to the people who once left the kingdom of Benin to avoid repression or escape justice there.
